What is the hottest safe running temperature for a MacBook Pro?

So I've been having issues with my laptop crashing repeatedley and I ended up putting it down to overheating (from feeling the base/black strip) and do I downloaded a widget for dashboard which tracks CPU temperature and I'm runnin fairly consistently at 70-95, sometimes up to 103 degrees or so. Figure this can't be good for it, and from my reading it should be running at about 60 degrees or so. So how hot is too hot, and how do I go about cooling it more than the fans at 6300rpm?

The MacBook Pro isn't adverse to periods of high temperature, but it's always good to avoid them. 170 degrees F is an acceptable upper level, but you'll want to find ways to lower the heat.
1. Don't use your MBP on your lap. You'd be surprised how common this practice is; this raises the temperature of your laptop by twenty degrees, constantly. Use your MBP on a table.
2. Avoid intensive operations for long periods of time. It's okay to use your machine as it's supposed to be, but a MBP isn't a desktop computer. Intersperse high-temperature use with low-temperature to let your MBP cool a bit.
3. Download an application like SMC Fan Control http://www.eidac.de to help you manually increase the fan. If you have a more recent Mac, look for http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus GFX Card Status, which allows you to moderate graphics use on your MacBook.

  • What's the optimum Scratch disk setup for a Macbook Pro?

    Hello Everyone,
I'm starting to edit video on my Macbook Pro. I'm going to need a scratch disk. Should I get a dedicated 3.5" scratch disk or should I spend the same money on a new HD for my Macbook pro and just use the stock 200gb drive as the scratch disk? It's a mutiuse system... If you were in my shoes, would you put the newer, faster HD inside my computer or use it as a scratch disk?

Just to jump in on this, and add to the orignal post. I have a Macbook (not pro) and I need to get a external HD. I'll obviously go for Firewire, the only problem I can forsee is importing footage from my DV camera, which is also Firewire. My Macbook only has a single Firewire port. I know most externals have a Firewire Hub built in, enabling you to connect through there, but is that sufficient, will the transfer rates be ok for DV capture, as it seems like the footage would have to go from the camera, to the external Hard Disk, to the Macbook, and back to the Hard Disk, seems like a big effort, which could lead to dropped frames.
I'm sure this has been encountered before, just asking another question to add to the original post, and also to help me decide.
One other thing, if it is ok with DV, would it be ok with Hi Def, as I plan to upgrade the camera some time soon, so I wouldn't like to pick something, that would soon be useless.

  • What is the best hardware test utility for my macbook pro?

I'm familiar with Apple Hardware Test which is available by pressing the 'D' key before the gray startup screen appears, but what about other 3rd party utilities? Are any of them better than A.H.T.? For instance how does ToolTech Pro 6.0.6 compare with A.H.T.? Additionally is DiskWarrior any better than using the apple's built in disc utility (cmd + r upon startup or in utilities folder)?

Thanks for the advise Linc Davis. I just spoke with a technician a moment ago who confirmed some of what you said. He told me that Disk Warrior is, as you said, for software related issues, but for hardware related issues they use Vilitans Software called Smart Utilities which is helpful in diagnosing any hardware related problems with a hard drive. He also informed me that there are no utlities, that he knows of, outside of what Apple Service Centers provides have that is any good for any other form of hardware diagnostics.
The reason I've posted this is in hopes that there was something I could buy and use in the future when I don't have easy access to an apple store and for use now since I'm having trouble with my system periodically crashing during it's sleep mode. I would really like to figure out why. I've checked the hard drive already with the apple disc utility and it's fine, but I'm still getting the crashing so that's the other reason I was hoping to obtain this utility, but it's clear I should wait till I get to an apple store or service center to resolve this problem appropriatly.

  • What is the best laptop cooling fan for a macbook pro?

I have my macbook on basically all day every day and I just want a nice cooling fan for underneath it so it doesn't overheat on me

I've never had any overheating issues, even when it is hard at work with several VMWare Fusion instances running concurrently. Just placed it on top of a Roadtech Coolpad (a passive laptop stand) and it's kept its cool thus far.

  • What is the best blue-ray drive for my Mac Pro????

What is the best blue-ray drive for my Mac Pro????
I wanted a BWU-200S but it says windows only i called apple
and all they could tell me was logitech....wouldn't tell me a model
    or anything.
I would really like one that does all the formats and feature that the
    Sony BWU-200S does.
I read that the BWU-200S might work in the mac pro it just only comes with
windows software. If anyone has tried this let me know please i need this soon.

This site makes Mac compatible Blueray drives:
    http://store.fastmac.com/index.php?cPath=10252
The questions to ask them is:
    1. Which applications can be used to burn bluray movies from it?
    2. Which applications can be used to playback commercial bluray from it?
    3. Does it let you burn DVDs from iDVD, iTunes and the Finder as well as CDs and CD-RWs?
    4. Does it support both DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL for burning and playback?
    5. Does it allow for booting from the system installer that shipped with the machine and running the hardware test that shipped with the machine?
    6. Do you get to keep the original optical drive in case you want to troubleshoot if system issues are due to their drive?
Some of these may already be on the website, I just haven't taken the time to look it completely over.

What is the best way to back up my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.5) before taking it in for service?

While I have nothing against Time Machine (and I do use it on some of my systems), I always make a bootable clone before taking a Mac in for service (2 actually), and I verify that clone boots before I let the Mac leave.
SuperDuper is free for a full clone (you only pay for incremental features).

Carbon Copy Cloner provides a 1 month fully enabled demo mode before you have to buy the product or stop using it.

Hi, does your MacBook have Firewire, or just USB?
FW is far faster if you have that.
    Avoid Bus powered ones.

Try resetting your modem. Power it down. Wait a moment, then power it up again. While it resets, do not change what is connected to it.
In another, though unrelated article, Apple recommends the following:
If you have configured your Wi-Fi base stations in the past, it may be helpful to do a factory default reset of each Wi-Fi base station that will be part of the wireless extended network before you begin.
This step really ought not be considered optional for the configuration you propose. If the problem persists after resetting your modem, reset everything else too.

  • What 2T external HD should I buy for my macbook pro for photos, videos and music storage?

    Hello friends!!
What 2T external HD should I buy for my macbook pro for photo, music and videos storage?
    Thank U!!

My personal preference is for the OW, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro quad-interface drive...have four of them of the 2 TB size and they are very good performers.  The quad-interface allows you a choice of ways to connect, eSata, Firewire 800/400, USB which is very convenient.  OWC is a Mac specialist so everything has been tested and guaranteed to be Mac compatible.

What is the best way to transfer iPhoto from MacBook Pro to iMac?

the only way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
