What is your fastest BT Wholesale Speed Test resul...

Hi,
Aplogies to the CL's if this is not the right forum but it definitely is speed related related.  I tossed up where to post it but decided on here fuguring you will soon move it if you want to.
As the title suggests, and for a bit of fun, what is the fastest result you have got from the new BT Wholesale Speed Test ?
I'll kick off with this :-
Best regards,
dfenceman

Hi Keith,
I typed a long response but have lost it now ???
Right, I'll type it all again.  You are right I am on ADSL as is the whole village.  This result was obtained from the village school.
As you know, every speed test I have run on the "new" speed tester has returned a download speed in excess of my IP Profile and at times in excess of my downstream speed.
Under the County Councils cost saving, performance enhancing project the school has just had its wireless link replaced with 16 bonded copper pairs.  This was projected to provide the school with 8Mbps, 2Mbps below all the other 250 odd in the county.  I therefore asked the school to run a speed test to find out what it is actually getting and this was the result.
I thought it would provide a little light relief from what can be a very serious forum.
As I said in my OP I was unsure where to post it but I never expected you to move it ti Infinity, I thought it might be The Lounge.  Neith of these are visited so frequently as the Speed/connection forum though.
Best regards,
dfenceman

  • Re: Only BT Wholesale speed test says 75meg

I'm getting exactly the same issue. No other website or speed test site lets me download at anything above 32Mbit but the wholesale site says 70+Mbit. I've spent hours on the phone to BT today and they have no clue what the issue is. I've had my service less than a week (but more than the 3 day sync time), and for failing to provide my service they want me to pay £300+ cancellation charges.
This is besides the fact they messed up my order in the first place delivered the wrong Home hub, then lied and said they'd ordered the correct one which never turned up and when I chased was told it was never ordered.
As far as they are concerned because their website says it's the right speed then it's not their issue.

    sappsys
Run this speed tester then the further diagnostics and post all the reults including your IP profile for up and down.

  • What do the readings on the speed test actually me...

When I carry out a BT speed test, what do the readings actually mean?
Which reading tells me if I am getting anywhere near the 5.5megs my line is supposed to be able to support?
I've just run a broadband choices speed test and that simply states that I am currently achieving download speeds of 473 kbps and upload of 376 kbps, which is really rubbish!

you a new customer and going through the 10 day training phase?
if so then breaking the connection is bad it will make the training phase longer or mess with the results it gives.
in general if theres not to much congestion at your exchange then with an ip profile of 4500 you would be able to get a download rate of 4000kbps which means you could stream 2 hd programs on two seperate systems with no pauses (providign there not wifi connected) and simultaneously browse the web on a thirde device whislt still playing games on a console, if your achievable download rate drops below 1500 then you wont be able to stream a single hd program, if it drops below 1000 then streaming high quality media will have problems and if it goes below 500 then you wont even be able to stream an audio track,
now for the hard part, regardless of what your rate is if the server is busy it wont be able to stream the content to you so pauses are inevitable, however you can often setup a program via iplayer to preload and then start the playback once its almost done (i know nobody likes waiting for things.
however the training phase your normally capped at available download rates and cant get anythign decent untill its over, sicne the training phase determins what speed is the best/ worst for your line sync and that determins what your ip profile or download rate will be, a lot of forced restarts or conection losses can and proably will result in a lot of problems with both sync speed and ip profile.
i didnt say it in the other thread about your setup problems but you would probably be better off gettign a sperate phone line for that problem device.

  • What is your wired ethernet connection speed during Time Machine backup

I am curious as to what transfer speeds everyone is getting with a wired ethernet connection. The problem I have is I am trying to use Time Capsule as my Time Machine storage. However, even with a Cat6 cable my average transfer rate is between 250 and 300kb/s. Once in a while that rate rockets up to 16mb/s but that burst only lasts a few seconds. At this rate I am backing up about 1GB an hour. This is going to take me 7 days just to do my initial backup which is nuts. Something has to be wrong with this thing. It just can't seem to sustain a decent transfer speed.

When connected by ethernet to my iMac, I checked the transfer speed to the TC several times by moving a 1GB file and it only took a little over a minute. The 1 GB per minute speed also was consistent with the time it took to backup of my iMac harddrive to the TC over ethernet. Don't know how to explain this difference from those experiencing much slower transfer rates. Could it be that when you are connected by ethernet your airport connection is still active and the transfer of data is taking place over the wireless connection instead?? Moving data between the TC and a connected USB drive, however, is very slow for me.

  • What's the fastest usable Internet speed I can utilize via WiFi?

I'm thinking about upgrading our Internet speed. Is there a wall that a dual-band Time Capsule hits?
For instance, If I got a 75Mbps Internet connection, would the WiFi reflect this full speed on my Mac or is there a limit?
I see references to a 54Mbps limit on the Interwebs, but can't find a definitive answer.
    Thanks.

The Time Capsule can deliver up to 300+ Mbps at 5 GHz and 130 Mbps at 2.4 GHz, so a 75 Mbps Internet connection will not provide much of a challenge.
As you know, the actual speed that you get on your network will depend on a number of factors, including distance from the router to the wireless device, obstructions in the signal path, wireless interference from other sources like cordless phones, etc.

  • What's your fastest way to center align two objects without moving one of them?

I will greatly appreciate your tips.

Use the align palette and set one object as a key object. Choose align to: and set that to key object(if not already set)
    Select one group
Shift click to add the next group to the selection
then click on an group again to set this as a key object (the outline will turn bold since CS4 to signify the is a key object)
choose an alignment in the align panel

  • BT Wholesale Speed Test not Working?

Anybody else having problems getting this to run properly?
Will display down and up speeds but won't run the diagnostics.

For most people it will work again after trying a few times. For some people it won't work for weeks at a time, however.

  • What's your MBP HD's writing & reading speed

I found there might be problems with my makbook pro 1.83g,
The writing & reading speed is slow!
I made 2 partitions of the HD, and tried copying a 280mb video file from partition A to partition B. I opened active monitor to have the readings.
The disk writing & reading speed has never reached 20mb/s, never,,,,,,,.
    My g5 1.6 is 43mb/s.
As I remembered, the HD inside the MBP is actually SATA 5400RPM HD, which should be fast, isn't it?
what do you think? what's your readings?

2 partitions of the HD, and tried copying a 280mb
video file from partition A to partition B
You do realize that copying to different partitions
on the same HD is a very poor judge of speed don't
you? The Heads must first read, then write, then
read.... In effect, you will see about half the speed
that you would if you were copying to a different HD
on a different bus. In that case one drive would be
only reading while the other drive is only writing.
Makes a heck of a difference. Try copying to a
different drive, preferably on a different bus, if
you want to judge speed. Or just get a copy of Xbench
    and run the disk test
    TiBook 667, FW800 Dual 1.25
    Mac OS X (10.4.6)
I will try xbench right away

  • What is the best place to do an iphone speed test?

What is the best place to do an iphone speed test? I hear some sites are not so accurate.
I ask because i would always have speeds above 750 kbps but now im not getting more than 400kbps after i updated to 2.0.2 . I just wanna double check that my speeds actually did suddenly drop with the update.

I am not sure these numbers are good, but I did some tests on my phone with different settings. All bars full on both Wifi, 3G and Edge using Telia here in northern Sweden (using above site):
    Wifi Download: 4.25 Mbps (4245 Kbps / 518 kB/s) transferred 2304 KB in 4.4 sec.
    Wifi Upload: 0.9 Mbps (972 Kbps / 119 kB/s) transferred 512 KB in 4.31 sec.
    3G Download: 1.17 Mbps (1177 Kbps / 143 kB/s) transferred 1280 KB in 8.9 sec.
    3G Upload: 0.16 Mbps (156 Kbps / 19 kB/s) transferred 512 KB in 26.81 sec.
    Edge Download: 0.2 Mbps (199 Kbps / 24 kB/s) transferred 256 KB in 10.5 sec.
    Edge Upload: 0.06 Mbps (60 Kbps / 7 kB/s) transferred 256 KB in 34.8 sec.
Maybe the numbers would be different if there were a similar test site in Europe, as I often find any speed tests depends on the physical location of the test server.

  • Speed testing proceed with caution??

I've been fascinated by the various reports of variable speeds being seen on  various different speed testing sites, so I've been having a play, and the results have been, shall we say, interesting.
Let's start at the top. No matter which machine I access it from, http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ shows me 56megs down and 12.89 up, with a max achievable of 60.1/20.
Namesco's  ( http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ ) shows 33623/14734 on my "work" partition, but if I reboot into another partition which is set up for webcasting, it, too reports the full 56megs down and 14/15 up. Same connection, same wires, barely five minutes apart on Mac OS X 10.7.3 in both partitions.
If I then, boot back into the work partition, and bring up Speedtest.net not only on there, but also on a couple of other machines, and set them all to check simultaneously, the combined total of the download speeds is - guess... yup, 56megs down and around 14 up.
Aside from quite fancying my connection giving me that full 20megs up (OK, I know, it'll be 19 or so), I'm really quite happy with this - and it does point out that, in all likelihood, severely fluctuating speed tests may not necessarily be line-related. If I wasn't able to reproduce all of this more or less at will, I may have thought differently, but it's an entirely repeatable excercise.

Yes indeed, none of the speedtests are reliably accurate all the time as their servers and routes to the server are subject to varying conditions. Speedtest.net is very dependent on which server you select, as their automatic server selection chooses based on ping results, which does not always give you a server with the fastest data rates (my results vary from 35 to 70Mbps, or as low as 2Mbps if you go out as far as New Zealand ). BT's main http://speedtester.bt.com/ (diagnostics) is up the pole for most of the day and is only any use for finding out your profile. However, their beta test is pretty good and is always worth trying: http://speedtester.bt.com/beta/speedtest-remote.jsp
BBMax is often said to be the best one but that could just be because it uses a much smaller download file and the test lasts for a shorter period of time. That means there is less scope for varying line and server conditions to intervene, and for Internet Security programs to slow things down.
    So what I do is:
    a) Turn off my Internet Security program (this can be very important)
    b) find the fastest speedtest.net server and use that result
    c) use BT beta speedtest (as I already know my profile)
    d) check BBMax
The results of these three methods are nearly always between 69.x Mbps and 71.x Mbps, my profile is 72.8 Mbps. I don't think you'll ever get your 19Mbps upload by the way as I am on a 20Mbps cap but the fastest upload speed I've seen is 16.x binary Mbps and 17.x decimal Mbps.

  • Airport Extreme N speed test????

I just installed my airport extreme. did a few speed test. The fastest speeds I'm getting are 1436 kbps download and 190 kbps upload.
The N channel is enabled on the iMac (I checked).
Now I just ran a speed test on the same wireless newtwork with my 3 year old PC laptopwith a 802.11b card and I got faster speed..***???? (1453 kbps download and 192kbps upload respectively)
So is this N channel just a bunch of BS???
did I wast $179 on my airport extreme??? I was running a cheap $10 wireless B+G router with okay results
Or am I doing something wrong??
    Thanks for any advice.

So is this N channel just a bunch of BS???
No. I presume you did a speed test off the Internet. The Internet connection you have tops out at, perhaps, 1500Kbps down and 256Kbps up. An 11b connection is capable of real-world speeds of about approx 6000Kbps, an 11g capable of 25000Kbps and 11n much faster than that.
The limiting factor here is your Internet connection. Having a faster link between your iMac/laptop and the router is not going to get you any faster speed than what your Internet connection can give you.
did I wast(e) $179 on my airport extreme???
In a sense, yes. Especially if all you do with the wireless link is access the Internet. If you do frequent computer-to-computer file transfer within your home network, then you will be able to benefit from the faster link. Otherwise, even the 11b would have been fast enough for you.

  • What is the fastest CPU I could put in Satellite Pro L20

This is a desperate request for help!!
The Football Manager 2010 is coming out soon and my laptop needs to be up to scratch.
I know I need to upgrade it because Football Manager 2009 nearly killed it!
At the moment I have 1.4ghz Intel Celeron M chip and 704mb of ram.
What is the fastest chip I could put in? I've done a bit of research and found I can only have 2gb of ram
The laptop is in perfect working order so I don't want to buy a new one just for the sake of it and its served me well over the last 4 years - I've dropped it enough times! Just need to speed it up a bit!

Hmm... Do you really want to upgrade the pretty old Satellite Pro L20? I mean new notebooks are not so expensive anymore and I doubt that you will get a strong performance boost with new CPU.
Anyway, in your notebook is only the preinstalled CPU pretested and nobody is able to say what other CPUs will run. But you should look on the specifications for other Satellite Pro L20 notebooks. If another L20 is equipped with faster CPU, it should also work in yours. You can try it but in worst case it will not work.
    Good luck!

  • BT Speed Test

    Hello All,
I got BT Infinity upto 80mb installed last Friday (went great, was told could only get 56mb, but i can download at 76mb)
when I goto http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ i am not able to run the speed test (the ADSL & Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) Diagnostics)
I enter my phone number, and it starts the test
It runs Test 1 and gets stuck on the "Upstream speed for:Test 1, at 100%"
it will just sit their for a age, then come up with site is busy.
    any ideas?
    Andrew
    EDIT:
this is what comes on the screen
The system is currently busy. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider

    Details from speedtest

  • The Delete Speed Test for Pages 2

    Hello Pages fans,
“Speed” is a subjective term, so I wonder what people will find if they do this test:
Paste a phrase such as “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’s back. ” ten times to make a dummy paragraph. Put the cursor at the end of the paragraph and press and hold the delete key and count the seconds it takes to delete back through the the entire paragraph, letter by letter. (This will depend on the key repeat rate you set in System Preferences.)
If I delete a particular paragraph this way using Pages 2, when viewing the document in narrow format (i.e. viewing “fit page”) it takes about 22 seconds. If I view “fit width” and stretch the width across my 23-inch cinema display the same task takes about 101 seconds.
Using Pages 1 it takes about 22 seconds (“fit page”) or about 27 seconds (“fit width”). Not as bad.
I have tried every single fix proposed in this discussion forum to speed up Pages - to no avail. I am using a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz with 1GB RAM, a 23-inch display, 10.4.5 and the very latest updates. I have no other problems whatsoever in any other applications.
Incidentally, In Word 2004 the same exact test takes about 17 seconds no matter what (whether viewed at 10%, 500% or anything in between).
Trust me- I don’t actually sit around deleting paragraphs like this all day, but I do notice a very annoying typing lag. I’ve basically given up on Pages as a serious writing tool because of this typing lag / speed issue and gone back to Word. Pages 1 works fine and served my purposes for a year, but what future does the Pages application have if version 2 performs so poorly?
Do those who report having blazing fast Pages 2 performance experience this problem with this test?
Yes, this is a dreadfully boring test! But at least it’s not subjective and it’s not as iffy as watching the system monitor percentages jumping around.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
various macs...   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

True, MMINSO, I can just go use some other word processor. (Thanks for the tip.) I'm sorry to laugh at your suggestion but you entirely missed the point of my keyboard input test when you told me to just delete the whole paragraph at once.
Ee gads... we could start a flame war over this! Can anyone think of a better, more reliable speed test to measure how Pages handles keyboard input?
When I type text while viewing a document at full width across my screen, the typing is much slower than when I view the document tiny size. The typing lags. By "lags" I mean that the keyboard input is behind what I am typing. I devised a mind-numbingly simple little keyboard input test to replicate this problem perfectly. Again: This test directly replicates the type of keyboard input slowdown problem I encounter while doing normal typing. So it's certainly relevant, and it's also measurable and replicable.
Naturally, it's not the actual number of seconds that counts, it's whether any given keyboard input task slows down when we do it viewing at different widths. The keyboard input rate changes, you see.
I had hoped that someone would verify whether they experience the same lag in typing under the same conditions. In other postings, others have simply described the problem as "infuriating" and dropped Pages entirely. I don't think that's very useful. I was trying to be a bit more scientific about it in the hopes that it might actually be helpful.
Maybe there's a better way to accurately demonstrate keyboard input lags in Pages?
Maybe my machine is the only one experiencing any slowness.
