What level of encryption does Mac OSX Server use? Is it HIPAA-compliant?

I'd like to setup a network in my private practice and need it to be HIPAA-compliant. It is needed for filesharing (primarily), but also for calendar/contact services, and VPN (remote access). Does anyone know the level of encryption? Also, would it suit my needs?
Can computers other than Macs utilize these services?
Do they need to be running a recent OS?

There is no such identifiable thing as "HIPAA compliant encryption" AFAIK, there is only what is considered best-practices, and that's an entirely locally-mandated discussion, and it's a moving target particularly with encryption.
This usually involves a discussion with somebody that specializes in regulatory compliance — the consultant or auditor that Linc Davis mentions would be an example — and what's then selected and approved by your regulatory compliance and lawsuit-avoidance folks (involving your "security official", whoever that may be), and usually what's recommended by an external entity with sufficient insurance coverage that's been formally retained in the organizational "backside covering" or "risk shifting" role.
Here's a summary of the regulations, and here are (some of) the specific details of the requirements.
Not running a current version of OS X in this particular context does seem ill-advised, however.  While Best Practices is inherently a moving target, older software versions will not likely be considered Best Practice.   Older versions tend to have errors and older encryption implementations, and these can be fixed or updated or replaced in newer versions, after all.
I'd tend to assume that FileVault2 or equivalent will be minimal here (particularly for mobile devices and to reduce the risk of data exposure due to wholesale device theft), though the access auditing and related is going to be central to the discussion.   You may well want and will probably need to encrypt specific data, but you're definitely going to need accountability and auditing and access control atop the encryption.
Linc Davis is correct.  Engage a specialist here.

  • What level of encryption does Firefox 3.6 use

A government site I use regularly now requires 128-bit encryption. I cannot find the current SSL or TSL encryption levels from Firefox Help

Firefox can use AES-256 since about 2002, so 128 bit encryption is no problem at all.

  • What is xgrid admin in mac osx server?

    Hello friends...
What is xgrid admin in mac osx server?

Xgrid is a grid or a compute cluster or distributed batch-processing engine. A grid allows an application programmer or system administrator to manage and coordinate a collection of computers and to distribute portions of a task across multiple computers.
Apple have [an Xgrid introduction|http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/technology/xgrid.html] available, and for details, have a look at the [Xgrid Administration and High Performance Computing|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/XgridAdmin_and_HPCv10.5.pdf] document that is available among the Mac OS X Server manuals.

  • PCs on Mac OSX Server use what to access Apple Mail?

Sorry for this simplistic question, but I couldn't find an answer in searching the forums.
We are considering installing Snow Leopard Server Mini for our small office. We are roughly half and half Macs and PCs, but very heavy now with iPhones and iPads. We are using Outlook on the Macs and PCs and on some of the iPads and iPhones as well. Outlook is set to access and download from an externally hosted email server.
I would like to eliminate Outlook and get everyone using Apple services on the back end - Apple Mail, iCal, Messages, etc. (This will be especially useful when Mountain Lion Mac and Server rolls out).
The question is, can a PC user access these services to replace Outlook in some native, non-Outlook PC way? Or is Outlook the best solution, since they're familiar with it and provided I can solve the technical issues? I would think that for Mail, I would point Outlook to our internal mail services, instead of the external one we're using now. But what about calendar? What about messaging?
In short how best can a PC be pointed to the OS X-provided services that the Mac users will be using?
    Thank you for any help...

You really can't do this with Apple's server groupware.  They are designed to work with Apple products almost exclusively.  While mail supports standards like IMAP and POP, iCal server is CalDAV and address book is CardDAV.  These are not supported natively in Outlook.  Look here http://caldav.calconnect.org/implementations/clients.html for client options but you will likely not find much that will do what you are looking for.  Or your client changes will be so drastic that your users will hate you.
If you are adamant on replacing Outlook, research Kerio.  But realize that you are going from a hosted solution that is presumably redundant to an internal solution hosted on Apple hardware that is as far from redundant as can be.  If you have regulatory or compliance issues that require self-hosting, then Kerio is the way to go as it will work on both platforms and emulates Exchange.
And by the way, Exchange support for OS X and iOS is really pretty good.  There is nothing wrong with Exchange, except the price.

  • I need at least 128 bit encryption to access secure sites. What level of encryption does Firefox have and how do I check it?

Many banking sites require you to confirm that you have at least 128 bit encryption on your browser. I allowed a site to check the encryption on my browser (Firefox/Windows) and was told I didn't have at least 128 bit encryption. I'm not the most computer savvy, so I don't know how to check or increase encryption, so if someone could guide me, I'd really appreciate it.

Right-click on the web page and select '''View Page Info'''. The '''Security''' tab will show the level of encryption being used in "Technical Details" at the bottom of that tab.
Firefox matches the level of encryption used by any secure website, and will easily do more that 128-bit encryption.

  • Installing Mac OSX Server hangs at Network Configuration

    Hi there!
I am installing my new Mac OSX Server (SNow Leopard) straight forward the assistant.
    Asking for Language: OK
    Asking for Country: OK
    Keyboard Layout: OK
    Entering License: OK
    Configuring Network:
    Ethernet: Static
    Airport: OFF
    FireWire: OFF
Clicking on Forward to continue: The assistant keeps telling me "configuring network". Nothing happens. It is doing that for hours now.
I tried to connect with Server Admin tool: OK works.
The network is up and running, but the assistant is not continuing.
    Any ideas?
Thanks for any help or suggestion

Smells vaguely of a DNS error or IP routing or a network connectivity problem.
What did you specify for your network settings, and particularly what was entered for the DNS server address? If you're not running DNS on your local network here, then enter no DNS servers as part of the prompting, and let Mac OS X Server establish its own default single-host DNS.
(You're not going to be able to use your ISP DNS here; those ISP DNS servers are not valid when you are establishing a server on a network behind a NAT gateway.)
I'd probably wipe the disk and boot from DVD and reload.

  • How do I re-install my Mac OSX Server from scratch

    Hi,
I have purchased two MacMini Servers with 10.6 OSX Server software pre-installed.
I have changed the organization as our company name changed and run into license issues.
I want to re-install the Mac OSX Server software and start from scratch. How do I go about this. I tried yesterday for many hours to do so and the new installs are still running into duplicate license issues and other issues. What is the best approach to do re-install? I am willing to erase the internal Hard Disk and boot (with an external DVD optical drive) if that is the best way to go. What are the steps?
I have the original CDs or DVDs and have extra, external hard disks to do a Time Machine backup, etc.
    Thanks,
    Don

If you are looking to do a nuke and pave of the system, and you have an external optical drive, then yes, that is likely the most direct method. Connect the optical drive, insert the installation DVD, and reboot the system targeting the optical disk as the boot volume (you can do this by holding down the C key or the Option key during startup).
Now, if you do not have an optical drive, you can put the installation disk into another Mac running 10.6 and use the Remote Install Mac OS X application in your Utilities folder.
    Hope this helps

  • Not installing Mac OSX Server 10.5.4

    Hello Friends...
I purchased Mac OSX Server 10.5.4 Leopard DVD.
I would like to install and configure it.
According to the manual , its not working.
It is getting upgrade to my Mac mini 10.5.7.
After installing , it wants to restart. But, its not booting and getting always restarted.
So, any advices and suggestions from your side.
    Regards,
    Bhanu

I'm going to point you to these two places to see if you can resolve your issues:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2019706&tstart=300
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3479
Basically what happens is if you insert the Server install DVD and start the installer package, if the DVD will boot your Mini it will show the 'Restart' button. If it can't, the installer will run and then you should follow the instructions in the second link.
Given the fact that many have tried and failed with the second method, I would attach the Mini, in target disk mode, to another Intel-based machine and run the install from there with the Mini as the target. Then boot the other machine from the Mini's disk and let the Setup Assistant finish -don't configure any services on the server in this mode other than setting it up as standard or advanced, apply any updates and then restart. Then shutdown both machines, detach the Mini, then let it boot on its own and continue configuration from there. I've done this several times with both PPC and Intel-based machines with positive results.

  • Adding Bootp/DHCP Options to Mac OSX Server 10.4

Our telephone supplier - Splicecom (http://www.splicecom.com/) - has asked us to ensure that option 66 and option 67 are enabled in order for their PCS400 handset to pick up an IP address from our Mac OSX Server DHCP server.
Please can somebody advise on how to either:-
    a) ensure that they are already enabled
    or
    b) tell me how to enable them
    Many thanks
    Paul

I think you need some other DHCP server to acheive what you need
option #66 = Boot Server Host Name
    option #67 = BootFile Name
    (Try "man bootpd" in Terminal.)
The ISC DHCP server can be installed in OS X using PortAuthority / DarwinPorts:
    "dhcp 3.0.3, Revision 1, net/dhcp (Variants: darwin_8)
    http://www.isc.org/products/DHCP/
ISC's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Distribution reference implementation of all aspects of the DHCP protocol, through a suite of DHCP tools: A DHCP server, client, and relay agent. These tools all use a modular API which is designed to be sufficently general that can easily be made to work on POSIX- compliant operating systems and also non-POSIX systems like Windows NT and MacOS. The DHCP server, client and relay agent are provided both as reference implementations of the protocol and as working, fully-features sample implementations. Both the client and the server provide functionality that, while not strictly required by the protocol, is very useful in practice. The DHCP server also makes allowance for non-compliant clients which one might still like to support.
    Platforms: darwin
    Maintainers: [email protected]"
But you'll need to configure this DHCP using a texteditor.

  • Configure MacMiniServer 2,53 GHz MAC OSX Server 10.6 via Windows 7 PC

    Hi,
i have a problem. I bought the MacMiniServer 2,53 GHz MAC OSX Server 10.6 and I want to configure the MacMiniServer via a Windows 7 PC. But the Mac Mini Mac OS x Server Install DVD can not open with a Windows 7 PC. Is there a possibility to start the install DVD from a windows 7 PC. I have at this time only a Windows PC.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi
The MacMini Server having no optical drive has nothing to do with what you want to do. The server OS comes pre-installed.
All you have to do is follow Mr Hoffman's suggestions.
Any USB Keyboard and mouse will do. Your only problem as far as I can see is finding a suitable monitor and/or DVI adapter to connect it to. It may be worth your while purchasing a Mini Display Port to VGA adapter?

  • Can a NAS-raid5 be directly attched to a Macmini using Mac OSX server?

Please excuse this post if any of you feel this is the wrong area (it seems to be kind of foggy to where it does belong)....Just looking for a Solution....
I recently setup an Mac OSX server on my old Mac mini (for my home use) I was wondering if I could somehow setup my Buffalo Terastaion NAS to be controlled by (with perhaps the raid admin software). I don't mind id I have to re-format it. I notice in the raid controller software you can add a system....
    Anyone done this before?
    Thanks in advance,
    RET

I was wondering if I could somehow setup my Buffalo Terastaion NAS to be
    controlled by
That should be possible via the NAS's Web Frontend (which I think it has) like one does it under Windows.
The RAID Admin software is only meant for the Apple XServe RAID to administer.

  • Bridge CS6 Mac cannot browse Mac OSX server 10.8

    Hello:
We had a drobo file server which was mounted on the desktop and had no issues browseing the volume in bridge.  After we moved to a new Mac OSX server running 10.8 we can no longer browse the mounted server.  We get a primission violation. Using the finder we're able to browse files and folders and create new files without this same type of issue.
Is there a preference that allows connection to a network volume via Bridge?
I hope I was clear on the discritpion of the problem.
    Thanks,
    Rick

Try a reset of preferences for Bridge using option key while restarting Bridge and choose reset prefs.
There is also a plist file for Bridge in the user library preferences folder that can be manual deleted and will be refreshed after restarting Bridge.
And maybe run a check and repair permission with either Apple Disk utility or cocktail.
Unfortunately Bridge is not designed for use over a network nor official supported by Adobe when it comes networks.

  • Script won't run on machine w/MAC OSX Server 10.4.9

Why won't the following script work on a machine that is running MAC OSX Server 10.4.9. On Machines running Mac OS X 10.4.9 it works fine, but on my server machine it won't name the file as per the script--the menu dialog box pops ("save as") up asking for a file name.??
