What One Specification Should I Look for When Buying Optical 5.1 Speakers for the iMac 27" i7?

Hi. I have an analog 5.1 (it came from my previous PC setup) now but only the subwoofer works, the controller for its satellite speakers maybe have been busted by the high voltage from the outlet (I've since gotten a nice AVR). If replace it since the late 2009 iMac and Macs in general only do surround sound (5.1 or higher) if it's not analog. I've read somewhere that is should be digital or optical.
When I look for the specification that'll make this Mac do 5.1 surround, what should I look for in the speaker's specifications. I believe the non-analog 5.1 speakers are way more expensive, I'll probably buy one used but what brand and model can anyone recommend that's not that expensive, iMac/Mac compatible and will be easy to setup (you just plug it in into it's the headphone jack at the back) that'll do 5.1 on Lion and Snow Leopard (I have both installed for backup OSes and experiments). Thank you in advance.
Gbu.

Here's the one I love, the Altec Lansing iM 237. Don't be put off by the small size or cheap price. I have two, one for home and one for my studio/travel.

I replaced my 2010-2011 iMac internal HD i dont have an install disk i created one with my external HD but when i go to install lion onto my imac it stays at the apple logo screen.HELP ME PLEASE!

Boot from the original Install disc that came with the computer and then format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID partition. Then  you can re-install OS X. If you no longer have the original media call AppleCare with the serial number of the machine (look on the bottom of the stand) and for a nominal fee they will ship you replacement media.
The chances are very good you will have fan problems if you used an off-the-shelf HD, beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's from vendors that incorporated heat sensors into the HD. If you did not buy the same type of HD your computer will think the HD is overheating causing the fans to run at full speed.

  • Is my iMac now useless as i have installed lion and i am no longer able to run cs2 photoshop and illustrator as this is all i use my mac for they should make this clear before buying it i can't afford the latest version of cs2

is my iMac now useless as i have installed lion and i am no longer able to run cs2 photoshop and illustrator as this is all i use my mac for they should make this clear before buying it i can't afford the latest version of cs2 and cant believe what a waste of money it is.

The newest version of CS2 is CS5. And it was made very clear that these applications would not run in Lion. Not only by Apple, but on all sorts of communities and websites. It has been a long time coming - PowerPC apps were outdated six years ago. Lion does not support Rosetta, and therefore not PPC apps.
you have to options. Go back to Snow Leopard or upgrade your software. (MS Office 2004 and older will not run either).
    Cheers

  • Need advice on what to look for when buying an external HD

    Hello iBook enthusiasts,
I want to buy an external HD for backing up my important documents, and for having a way of booting up just in case the iBook should fail. I have searched some of the old posts, but I am still a bit confused.
So far, it seems that the most important criterion is that the drive have FireWire in order to be bootable.
I don't want to spend a ton of money. Somehow, I get these emails from Buy.com, advertising their specials. For example, they had a 250G one for $100 (although that particular deal is now expired). This seems like a good deal to me. Is that right? Should I try to buy the largest or smallest one that's in my price range? If iBook does die, I would like to still be able to use the HD with whatever replacement I get.
Also, is there any particular brand that I should either look for or avoid? How do I know these things?
Anyway, sorry these questions are so vague. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Ibook G3 500 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   14 GB HD, 640 MB RAM

    Anna:
Yes, rule no. 1, Firewire or FW/USB
    2. Largest HDD you can afford (having more space than you need it not a problem; needing more space than you have, is.)
    3. 7200 rpms. (Most of them are, but not all)
Here is a list of some of the best buys already sorted for 200-300 GB.
Different folks like different manufacturers. I have had my LaCie for 2 years. No problems. I like it for it's compact size and elegance.
Here are some good hints from Dr. Smoke on Backup and Recovery. Instead of Retropect, which I could never quite figure out, I use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
Post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • What do you look for when buying a new printer?

Ease of use and good drivers.
Ever tried to use a Ricoh, Konica Minolta, or Kyocera MFP?
Printers are stupidly emotive, get it wrong and it's like you've punched their kids or something.

Hey guys, we are doing our first ever video meet up tomorrowabout printers. We are going to be talking withHPabout what the printer buying process is like for IT pros. What do you guys look for when you look at printers? Are there any must-have features?

  • What to Look For when Buying a Used Storm to activate on Verizon Pre-Pay

Hi, I am looking to buy a Storm 9550 refurbished for use on Verizon Pre-Pay and am just wondering what all I need to look for.
    Would something like this work:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Great-BlackBerry-Storm2-9550-2GB-Black-Verizon-Smartphone-WIFI-GSM-Phone-/181217767463?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item2a316bb027
Or is it more complicated than just finding a Verizon-branded phone?

The lugs that hold the base onto the phone are not strong enough and the base often needs to be replaced. Give the base (the bit with the button on it) a tug to see whether it's broken.

  • What to look for when buying used

I'm planning on replacing my oooollddd G4 desktop, likely with a used MacBook if I get my way.
I figure there are some things I know I can do to make sure it's in good, working condition. (And yeah, I realize there'll be some wear from having had an owner already) Checking for a noisy hard drive or dvd drive, the display and making sure ports work are obvious points but I was wondering if anyone can suggest anything I can do to be a little more thorough?
I don't want to have to download software to run tests. I'm hoping there are things that are already part of OS X that can help. (eg. I'm looking through the utilities apps to see what might be good to run if anything)

Rather than take the risk of buying another person's problems, consider purchasing an Apple refurbished unit. You get newer model, it comes with a complete standard warranty, you can purchase an extended AppleCare warranty, and they are less expensive than the new models. You will find them at Apple's Online Store.

  • When buying an Ipod Touch, just for music, how do you gauge which capacity machine you need?

When choosing an ipod touch just for music, how do you gauge which capacity you need?

Well, you'll be able to see how much material you already have by looking at the bottom of the iTunes window (eg "2000 songs, 2GB" or whatever). Then you can gauge whether that represents about as much as you expect to have in the near future, with a little headroom, or if you think you will dramatically increase that amount, either through ripping CDs, or by purchasing downloads.
Calculate a 4-minute song in AAC format / 256k as being 10MB. A 128k track would be around 5MB. Most MP3 tracks will generally be a little smaller for the same time length, but better to give yourself more room than you think you'll need.
    So for the 8GB iPod - 800 tracks at 256k, or 1600 at 128k.
    32GB: 3200 @ 256k or 6400 @ 128k.
    64GB: 6400 @ 256k or 13000 @ 128k.
Current tracks from iTunes Store are 256kb/s. Bitrate for tracks you rip yourself are set using iTunes Preferences.
    Hope that helps.

  • Looking for a recessed computer desk that will fit the iMac 27

I have the iMac 27 computer.  The monitor sits high on a regular desk requiring more upgaze than is typically comfortable for the eyes.  I have been researching recessed computer desks but so far they seem limited to the iMac 24 or smaller.
Was wondering if anyone has found a recessed-type desk or some such variation that allows for more comfortable viewing angle.

In addition to the excellent suggestions by Paul......
I have the XP 400.  For your other products to work wireless w/the printer, you should also do the wireless set-up through the printer.  The printer will run a diagnostic test run printout for you.  Assuming that your model 410 works the same as mine.  The printer's user manual should also help you with your wireless setup as it has several options.
Last resort is to contact Epson and/or their tech support website.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 does not recognize USB PnP Sound device connected  to iMac OSX even when activated in Audio MIDI setup. The iMac(i-7 processor,16 GB)   is working with this USB device without any problem

Premiere Pro CS6 does not recognize the USB PnP Sound device in order to produce a commentary sound track. The USB device has been activated on the iMac OSX by using the Audio-MIDI-setup and is working correctly with the iMac. When opening > presets >audio hardware I can only select between >standard >out  integrated > digital input integrated >microphone integrated. USB PnP is not indicated at this place.
With the built-in microphone of the iMac I can produce the commentary sound track, but I would prefer a stand alone version for better quality.
Your help is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Annemarie!

I'm using a Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 (which has a microphone on the side). I have several other devices plugged into separate USB slots: a keyboard, a mouse, my iPhone, and a Roland keyboard midi controller.
I've considered that maybe the webcam/mic combo is the culprit. If USB doesn't work at a constant speed, that could very well be causing the issue! The sound begins to lag badly sometimes when it's working properly, so that there's a multisecond delay between speaking and hearing my voice repeated back over the mic which is another sign that something is wrong. I've also caught it making a strange electronic sound during its "hang" time once it stops taking sound input correctly.
Maybe I should try to use line-in and forgo USB altogether then. I think I'd need a preamp and some sort of converter for that since the Mac Mini lacks a powered mic jack. I'm only a newbie musician so I've never set up such a system but it might be a better solution in the long run.
I'll check to see if it hangs before or after my computer enters suspend mode, that's a good suggestion too. Thank you for your help!
