What ppi should each image have PRIOR to importing to Lightroom, for creating a BOOK for Blurb?

I am creating a book for publication with Blurb and all of my images have an exclamation point in the upper right hand corner.  Each has a different message as to what the ppi is and what it will print at.  All of my images are 300 dpi and 1000px at their largest side. What am I doing wrong?  My understanding is for print, 300 dpi is the best HQ resolution. Will I need to resize all in Photoshop and start over and if so, what is the best size for such a project?  Thank you.
Amanda Wyn

Your problem is in the 1000px max, not the 300 ppi. 1000px photos are just good enough for small prints. There is no point in trying to print such small files, you need bigger than that, To find out the print dimensions just divide the number of pixels by the print resolution (the usual 300 ppi, but 240 ppi is usually enough for a quality print) . So you'll get a little more than 3.3 in if printed at 300 ppi, 4.1 in @ 240 ppi.

    Hi
You need to upgrade to the next OS 10.6 Snow Leopard by purchasing the DVD online.

When I install Photoshop Elements 10 it DOES convert all the PDF files to Photoshop Elements-10 Docs. it even changes and shows the PSE-10 Icon. So I am alway installing PSE-10 or uninstalling it. If I send the  PDF file that has been automatically converted to a PSE-10 the person I send the file to can not open it because they do not have PSE-10. What can I do to stop PSE-10 from converting my PDF files? Don't tell me to upgrade PSE-10 I tried their on-line program and  it is too advance for a hobby photographer like myself and their Help Desk is impossible to reach.

  • What PPI should I use when exporting for a video project?

I shoot RAW photos.  I like and use Premier Elements 11 to make video.  Frequently I insert photos in the videos and enjoy using the Pan and Zoom technique (frequently credited to Ken Burns).
Resizing photos helps Premier Elements to run smoothly.  The LR Export command makes it easy.  Using PSD files works well in Premier Elements.  However, I am confused about settings.
My understanding is that if no Pan&Zoom or cropping is to be done in the video the export should be 1920x1080.  If Pan&Zoom is planned, the setting should be higher by about 50%.  LR makes it simple by letting you specify the "Long Edge" so the setting would be 2880.   The short edge will match the original.
What about "Pixels Per Inch" for a HD 1920x1080 video project that may be played on a big HD TV or smaller YouTube?  There is plenty of information about PPI for printing and computer monitors, but not HD Video.
Here is screen capture for reference:
What should the pixels per inch be set at to match 1920x1080 video?  The 140 setting is a complete guess!
    Thanks in advance!

The above sentence from your first post is the correct answer with a few changes as to what settings you need to use in LR's Export module.
Anytime you "resize" an image it will lose sharpness unless you apply Output Sharpening. I have no idea if Premier Elements applies sharpening, how much it applies, or how much using large raw images slows it down. The best suggestion is for YOU to resize the raw images and apply Output Sharpening that meets YOUR taste as to "crispness." That way Premier Elements will use the properly sized TIFF or JPEG images (no PNG Export in LR) with no further modifications.
    For 1080p (1920 x 1080) Videos:
Don't use the 'Long Edge' option in LR's Export module since you want both portrait and Landscape images to have the same height. Instead simply enter W: 1920, H: 1080, and Resolution as mentioned doesn't matter. For the Output Sharpening LR's Screen Standard setting should work fine, but review the resized images at 1:1 and adjust to your taste. LR's Develop module Sharpening settings should NOT be used for this purpose. This is for the initial "capture" sharpening only.
As you mentioned when using Zoom & Pan you will want to increase the file size proportional to the actual Zoom setting you are using inside Premier Elements:
    150% = 2880 x 1620
    200% = 3840 x 2160
    300% = 5760 x 3240
For best results I'd limit your Zoom to 150%, especially if you’re having performance issues. You also don't want to make your image larger than its native camera raw resolution, which will reduce the sharpness. For higher Zoom settings simply Export the images full-size without using ‘Image Sizing’ or ‘Output Sharpening.’ Use 'File Settings' JPEG, sRGB, with 80 Quality setting, which will provide good results.

  • When using function in forms what priveledge should a schema have ? in DB

when calling a database level function in oracle forms what permission should i grant to schema in database level ?
con it's given error during compilation that object must be declare...........

    total_record:=total_record+1;
    SELECT
    HR.fn_get_finished_opening_stock(V_PRODUCTCODE,V_TRANSDATE,:GLOBAL.COMPANYID) INTO OPENINGSTOCK FROM DUAL;
    what system level permission

what system level permission The user logged into Oracle Forms must have the execute privilege on the function being called. You can either GRANT EXECUTE on the FUNCTION to public (not the best option) or you have to grant execute to each user of the application (more work, but the Oracle recommended option).
As you are calling your function in a PL/SQL block in your Form, there is no need to do this in a query, just simply assign the return value of the function to the variable directly. For example:
    DECLARE
       OpeningStock    NUMBER;
    BEGIN
       OpeningStock := HR.FN_GET_FINISHED_OPENING_STOCK(v_productcode, v_tansdate, :GLOBAL.CompanyID);
END;Also, just looking at your code sample, it suggests that you are working with the Oracle Enterprise Business Suite (EBS). If this is true, then your application user is the APPS user. The APPS should have privilges too all EBS related objects in the database.
    Hope this helps,

  • What HTTP caching headers will prevent iPhoto from re-downloading each image in a "Photo Feed" every time it checks the feed for new content?

I've noticed a practical issue with iPhoto's File->"Subscribe to Photo Feed..." feature.
Every time that iPhoto checks a subscribed RSS Photo Feed for new content it will re-download each and every photo in the feed.  This occurs even if iPhoto has already downloaded each image, they all have unique GUIDs set, and no content in the feed has changed since the last time it polled for it.
My best guess is that this happens if the server offering the feed does not produce the proper cache-control parameters in the HTTP Headers that are sent by the server when the RSS feed is accessed by iPhoto.
Does anyone know what parameter/value pairs need to be set in the HTTP headers to prevent iPhoto from re-downloading RSS enclosures that it already has?
This is a very practical problem for feeds with a large number of photos of large file size.  Besides the obvious massive waste of bandwidth, the user receives an annoying error whenever they try to quit iPhoto before the feed and all of it's images have been re-downloaded yet again.

Here is an example of the HTTP headers for two of the images in the feed.
Any red flags in there that you think might be causing iPhoto to think it needs to re-download the images after it's already downloaded them once?

  • I'm going to get the new iPhone 5S soon. I also have an iPad. I'm wondering is it best for each device to have the same Apple ID or should each device have a different ID? Pros? Cons? It seems like there is a conflict using iCloud for backup between the 2

Basically wondering if multiple devices should share the same ID or each to get their own. Such as, how it affects Facetime, backups to iCloud, etc. Thanks. Sorry for the long title.

    Hi matrixxzero,
In my opinion, you want to use the same Apple/iCloud/iTunes ID on both devices. That is exactly what iCloud is designed for - to keep devices with the same Apple ID in sync. Your Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Safari Bookmarks, Notes, Photo Stream photos, and Documents will all be kept in sync if you have those options set up on both devices under Settings>iCloud.
Unless you have some reason to not want to have the same information on both devices, then going with a single ID on both is the way to go.
    Cheers,

Really? Is it really a hot runner? Do you have experience with this yourself? When I got it from the factory it was nice and cool and quiet to be honest, but then it got all old and dusty and all that and it lowered the efficiency and heightened the noise. I just wanna know how to clean it to get it back to factory efficiency (or atleast something close to it), I'd be very satisfied with that.

  • InDesgin CS6:  What is best practice for creating a jpg for web use?

My graphic design experience is heavy toward print, but I’ve been charged to solve this web-graphics problem for my team. I’ve done searches online and can’t find resources specific to this issue. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.
    Here’s the issue:
My team uses both InDesign and Photoshop CS6, to make landing pages and other stuff for our website. After saving to jpg files, the InDesign files always have jaggy text compared to Photoshop’s jpg. What are we doing wrong?  Can’t InDesign be used for web?  I’ve also tried saving it out as PNG with no better results.
Note: The background in the InDesign files are created in Photoshop (these look fine in both programs)—but the text created in InDesign looks jaggy while Photoshop’s text looks clean.
Here’s how we save it in Photoshop
File > Save for Web with these settings: JPG, High, Optimized, Quality 70, Blur 0, Matte None, Quality Bicubic.
Here’s how I solved the problem (which seems too labor intensive to actually be correct) Is there a better way?
    I convert text to outlines.
I change the “intent” to web intent
Manually reset the page size.   Whenever I change the intent in anyway, InDesign automatically changes the page size to 8.5”x11” or 800x600 pix regardless of the original page-size. I expect it to change proportionately from inches to pixels, or vise-versa, but it just won’t do it. Is there a preference for this somewhere?
Export as JPG with these setting:  Quality Maximum, Format method progressive, Resolution 72 ppi, Color Space RGB, Options: Embed Color Profile: sRGB IEC6196-2.1, anti-alias.
Our web people tell us that if we use a higher resolution the image comes in proportionately too large, and they can’t use it at that size.
This seems like a lot of work. There must be a better way?

    Ok. Thank you.     Hmm....I don't have PDF/X-4.  I have Adobe Preset PDF/X1a and PDF/X3.
I assume PDF/X-4 is a from a newer version of InDesign.  Will PDF/X-3  work as well?
So there is not a way to achieve a crisp jpg or png directly from InDesign without all the steps I'm using now?
BTW, do you happen know why changing the "intent" changes the page size? or where I can change a preference on this.  unless I've overlooked it, I don't see anything relating to this under edit > preferences.
Thanks again for your reply, I value your input!

  • Sony RX100 Mk3 - Image corruption on RAW import to Lightroom

I'm using Abobe CC - newest versions
I just got back from Europe with about 4,000 photos. I noticed a problem when I imported from my new RX100 mk3. It's the first time I've used the camera, which I'm pleased to report creates excellent images for its size.
After importing this massive number of photos, I find:
    Jpegs are fine.
    RAW is fine generally speaking.
However, when the sony was specifically in continuous bracket mode and shooting RAW (auto-shooting a bracketed set of 3 or 5 photos with one button press), I occasionally got some really crazy artifacts.
Basically thin stripes across the photos where the stripes are misaligned with the rest of the photo.
These artifacts do not appear on the camera LCD screen, and they were not created when the raw images were imported into either iPhoto or Sony PlayMemories software--even when subsequently moved into Lightroom.
The artifacts only occurred when importing the raw images directly into Lightroom from the RX1000 iii (i.e. from the SD card).
Just reporting it. My workaround is to replace the bad ones with imports from other software. But I probably won't be using Lightroom for importing until this is fixed.

Hrm.  That does seem to be the issue as I experienced the same situation as described, with seeing the preview for a few seconds and then it goes crazy.  Just never seen it change so drastically before, and couldn't figure out how to get Lightroom to show it anywhere close to what the preview was.

  • What is the accepted format for creating animated emoticons for the iPhone and iPad? Are they .gif files?

I'm new to creating apps for iOS and am interested in creating an app that uses animated emoticons in messaging. I wasn't sure what format was accepted, however. I presumed that .gif files would work but want to know for sure before we begin working on them. Thanks!

So...how does one make animated emoticons for iOS? That's my question, I suppose. Thanks!

  • May have solved AVCHD import in Lightroom?

Okay. This is wierd as hell, and I can not explain why it is working but it does. I have been struggling with the whole Lr not importing AVCHD footage from my Nikon D7000, and I went to several extremes and re-encoded a bunch of footage into mp4 H.264 and mpeg formats and even resized to 720P to try and solve the problem. It worked, but was a total pain because I was spending a ton of time re-enocding, etc...Then, I accidentally renamed a file and placed a space and the following characters (1), and presto. Lr can now import the file a render a thumnail. WTF! I could not believe my eyes, so I went back and renamed all of the files that did not import that were taken using h.264 in .mov format and they all imported, so long as I place a space between the original file name and the suffix it worked.... for Example: filename_01.mov was renamed to filename_01 ().mov or  filename_01 2.mov or filename_01 .mov or filename_01 (1).mov
So long as there was a space between the original name and new end +siffix, than the file imported.
Any ideas why this is working? It is a completley hacked solution.
    Regards, Jeff

As all the files are variations on the mpeg format renaming them will work. See previous discussions on this.
However when rendering these files in a video editor such a Premier you will cause problems by having changed the extension. AVCHD files are highly compressed. For editing I personally always convert them using Ciniform to a less compressed format to make editing quicker, The Ciniform format uses the extension Mov when used on OSX and AVI when used on windows machine, it is, of course exactly the same file. However Premier can work nativly with AVCHD files, however if you have changed the extension it will cause problems.
The other issue with AVCHD files is the metadata, which presently is not imported into LR. Changing the extension doesn't help this. It's not a problem if you (like me) aren't interested in the camera generated metadata associated with AVCHD files and make no use of it, but it is of concern to some users.
Personally I just don't bother using LR for video as it really serves no purpose at present in my work flow. I use Bridge which works well with Premier Pro and can handle AVCHD files natively without any need to start changing extensions. The extensions to file names are there for a purpose. Whilst all video formats are variations on the same basic mpeg format, they do exist for a purpose.
