What's easier? Replacing pram battery or hard drive and dvd drive?

I have a dead imac g4 flat panel with all my files and a dvd drive. I have a working imac same year, same processor but with only a cd drive.
First, I want my files.
Then, I wouldn't mind keeping one of them as a dvd player.
Would appreciate any suggestions!
(I don't actually know if it is the battery or power supply which is dead.)

My experiences lately with my NEW (to me) 20" iMac G4.
1.25 GHZ PPC   1 GB RAM   160 GB HDD
Purchased on eBay in the orginal box for $349.00 delivered.
When the computer arrive it appeared to be in excellent shape.  It turned on and operated without any problems.  I really purchased as a project, and intended to restore to as NEW as possible.  The iMac arrive with the usual specification for the model (born on date 3/2004).  Specification were 1.25 GHZ PPC, 1GB RAM 512/slot.
So I purchased some parts to get started (like I said above everything worked).
1.  OWC RAM 1GB/slot for a total of 2BG's  ($55.98/Free shipping)

2.  OWC PRAM battery ($3.99/free shipping)
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/BAA36VPRAM/
3.  OWC LG internal Optical Drive ($45.99/free shipping)
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/imac/g4
4.  IOGEAR Bluetooth (ver 2.1) Adapter (USB 2.0 Micro)  ($13.99/free shipping)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833139019
5.  Apple Wireless Magic Mouse (had a spare)
6.  Apple USB Keyboard (newest) (had a spare)
Before installing the parts I cleaned out the dust and grim (nasty dirty), removed the Fan and cleaned (nasty dirty), I also removed the Thermal Grease and applied new Thermal Grease (used Artic Silver 5 Thermal Compound).  I used a powerful vaccum and a air compressor (120 psi), and damp Q-Tips.
On the outter shell and back of monitor I used SoftScrub/Bleach lite scrub and then rinsed with a damp cotton rag (looks brand NEW).  Was sure to remove ALL of the SoftScrub.
On the screen I used iKlear and a iKlear cleaning cloth, screen is in MINT condition.
Honestly the computer looks and operates much better than I had anticipated.
I really didn't need to install a new Optical drive in the 20" but it was a cheap upgrade.  And so.  I have a iMac G4 17" with the same spec's as the 20" iMac so I opted to install the 20" iMac's Optical drive in the 17" iMac.  The 17" would only play CD'd and not DVD's.
After putting everything back together I installed Leopard 10.5.6, then upgraded to 10.5.8.  I installed Quicktime 7.7 for Leopard and iTunes 10.6.3.  Installed iLife09 (no iMovie), iWorks09, Superduper (latest), and Disk Warrior 4.4,
I chose not to upgrade the HDD simple because it is working fine and I don't have any critical information stored on it.
My final upgrade would be to install a new FAN but I'll wait on that for a while.  Since the Fan operates fine it does have a very, very slight whine meaning the bearings are starting to wear a bit.  Probably because of the dirt and grime that was on there from before.
I would like to buy a NEW Fan to install but right now the only option is to buy a Apple Fan (part# 622-6215).  I wouldn't mind a non OEM Fan but the little fins on the side of the Fan's walls are a concern for proper air flow.

Hi Jolly, I tried 3 different HDD's all of them were reformated and reimaged with the HP image from this laptop. When I try to populate the drive, it just closes the window. Same with the dvd drive. Other then no able to write to the dvd/cd drive, everything else is perfect. But that is not good enough...

  • Legacy IDE Hard Drive and DVD Drive

I wondered if anybody could send me in the right direction with this...
I have got the A55M-E33 motherboard and try to connect my old hard-drive and DVD drive (both IDE) to the motherboard using IDE to SATA converters. The BIOS detects both drives, however I don't think I got the right BIOS settings to accommodate the way the drives should be addressed. Has somebody used this kind of setup and would kindly share their experience please?
    Thanks

  • Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

    Hi
I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
    Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?
    Help appreciated.
    Ewan

    Thanks Arnie
Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.

  • How can i restore from Recovery Disk if my notebook's hard drive and dvd drives are dead.

Hi. Good day. My hard drive just crashed and im trying to restore from my restore disks. Unfortunately, my dvd is dead too. I copied the recovery disks to a new hard drive and tried booting from a flash drive but the noteebook is still giving me the SMART hd error message. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi,
If you have, or can borrow an external CD/DVD drive it would be worth trying this although I'm not certain your notebook will support booting from a drive connected via USB.
Another option may be to see if you can find a second hand optical drive on somewhere like Ebay - the drives compatible with your notebook can be found on Page 59 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.  It may even be worth removing a re-seating your existing drive just in case this helps as described in this section.
Does the drive show up in Device Manager?  If it does, right click it and select Properties.  Select the driver tab and see if there is an error code in the status box.

  • Hard drive and dvd are not recognized in the setup menu, what could be wrong?

The hard drive and dvd drive are not recognized on the setup menu for my Pavilion a4316f desktop computer.  Could it be a failure of the controller?  Can a PCI controller be used to replace the mother board controller?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The Recovery process would erase you hard drive, and attempt to install a fresh OS. Decidely a bad choice if you wanted to save your data files. The Recovery sets are "tattoo" with the BIOS hardwafre configuration. It will not, IMHO, recognize the PCI Sata card.
You mentioned the Recovery program on the hard drive actually requested the installer of the controller (PCI card). Try running from that.

  • IBook hard drive / cd\dvd drive errors

So my friend's old iBook finally went down, he nearly lost all of his data on it due to hard drive failure.
So I went about and replaced the hard drive with another one from my spare laptop. I got it booting up and installed Tiger, but I realized a strange error, the iBook kept going to sleep when the screen was slightly moved. So I went about and fixed that.
Somewhere along the lines however, the hard drive and dvd drives stopped registering in the boot process. At first I thought I had fried the motherboard or something, but I popped the hard drive into a firewire external reader and booted the iBook from it just fine.
When I power it on, I can hear it read the OS X install disk and spin the hard drive a little bit, but after that it will stop reading them completely and boot from the external drive. I have the cable settings correct, and aside from that I tested all of the possible configurations I could do.
At this point, I figured the cable that the HD/DVD drives are connected to was severed partly, and I ordered another one off ebay. I went to test it and the iBook is still doing the same thing.
It is a 600 mhz laptop with 256 mb ram. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Somewhere along the lines however, the hard drive and dvd drives stopped registering in the boot process. At first I thought I had fried the motherboard or something, but I popped the hard drive into a firewire external reader and booted the iBook from it just fine.
I can't be certain, but it's entirely possible that the motherboard is damaged. Booting from a Firewire case wouldn't require the ATA interface to be functioning, so if that chip was damaged, perhaps due to static shock, that would explain both the hard drive and optical drive failing.
Presuming you have indeed confirmed the correct master/slave settings on the drive, try resetting the iBook's PMU:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
If that doesn't help, you may indeed have a component failure on the main logic board.
    Good luck.

  • Need advice - should I replace PRAM battery even if I don't need to?

I'm getting ready to open up my iMac to replace the internal memory and DVD drive. While I'm inside, I was thinking I should go ahead and replace the battery. I keep my machine on 24/7. I have no idea how long a battery lasts. Its woking fine now. But since I'm opening up the machine and using thermal paste, and all, should I also replace the battery?
I assume pulling it out to replace it resets the PRAM. Not sure what effect that will have on my machine. What will be reset? Could it cause me any problems? What settings will I lose? I could always wait until the battery goes and then replace it. Is that a better idea? I don't know anything about PRAM, etc.
    Thanks,
    Alfredo

    Alfredo
Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM? will answer your question.
Since you are going through the effort to replace the DVD drive, the loss of PRAM settings is the least of your worries. I presume that you have the necessary technical knowlege, tools and skills to perform this surgery, and as long as you have gone through the effort to open the case, I would also advise that you take this opportunity to replace the battery.

  • USB external hard drive and thumb drive don't work any more...

I have a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5...and i've been using my USB external hard drive and thumb drives for a year with no problems....but now when i plug them in, my mac does not see them...the lights on the external hard drive and thumb drives come on as normal but nothing else...it does this on all the USB ports(front and back) BUT my iPod, keyboard and mouse, and HP printer (that use the same USB ports) works fine....(also i'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2)....help....

You can't transfer songs from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs that you purchased from the iTunes Store (you can also re-download them using the iTunes Store Purchased screen).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, drag the files (or the folder containing the files) to the iTunes window, to add them to the iTunes library.

  • I can't import any photos. 'Could not copy to requested location' is the given but i have tried importing to both hard drive and external drive.

i can't import any photos. 'Could not copy to requested location' is the given but i have tried importing to both hard drive and external drive. Help please ?

Most likely, the "requested location" where you are trying to copy files to does not have WRITE permission, and so you need to change the permissions.

  • Replacing pram battery

I will be opening up my iMac (G3 400 early 2001) soon to install a new hard drive. I realized this would be a good time to change the pram battery which is original, but still good.
If I do the replacement quickly enough will all the settings be saved? If not, what is involved to restore them? Is resetting the pram necessary? What, in general, should I know about doing this?
Also, since this will, at the same time, involve replacing the HD for upgrade- I will be cloning bootable external to new HD (with partition just below 128GB- how will the battery change complicate, if at all, this procedure? If settings are lost should I restore them when booted first from the external before cloning and partitioning? Thanks for any help on this.

You are stressing too much about this. Just replace the battery. After you get everything reassembled you will want to reset the PRAM and then set the clock.
It has nothing to do with the hard drive.

  • Replace PRAM battery in in Intel core2 duo iMac?

I have just installed the iStat widget in my Intel Core2 Duo 2.16 Ghz iMac. I was a little surprised to see a battery level reading on it (of 45%). I wonder if it is measuring the remaining life of the PRAM battery. Remembering how badly my Powermac and my wife's G5 iMac behaved when their back-up batteries needed replacing, I want to avoid the same situation on my Intel iMac. However I can find nothing on Apple support for replacing the PRAM/back-up battery on an Intel iMac, so I am wondering if there is a replaceable battery or not. Anyone know?
    Thanks
    Wilson

The amount of battery “cycles” the battery has had. One cycle is defined as a complete discharge and charge of the battery, but partial discharge and charges also count. So, two half discharge and charges are the same as one complete discharge.

  • How to replace PRAM battery in Power Mac 9600?

Greetings. Need to replace the PRAM battery in a Power Mac 9600. Purchased a new battery, but can anyone tell me exactly how to remove the old one? Don't want to break the black plastic "cradle" it sits in. Thanks very much.

You need to remove the cover/retainer that snaps over the top of the battery holder. Using a very small screwdriver, insert its flat tip between the outside of the socket's positive metal contact and the battery retainer's end. Gently pry outward against the plastic retainer to unsnap it. You may need to do the same at the opposite end to completely pop it off. Once that's removed, you can actually grasp the battery by its sides and roll it up and out of the holder. Otherwise, insert the same small screwdriver under the lip on the outer rim of the battery's positive end, and pry/lift it out of the holder.

  • Replaced PRAM battery, now G$ Quicksilver won't power up

I replaced the pram battery. Now my G4 Quicksilver will not power up. The light is on in front of the computer, as well as on the front of the monitor. However, pressing, pressing and holding for many seconds does nothing. No sounds--nada.
I bought an iMac, and want to use the G4 in target mode to transfer files, and then set up a wireless network. I have no clue as to where to start, since the computer is dead with its lights on.

Did you click on the blue text above?
    Here it is again:

As you read the article that opened, towards the bottom, click "For Power Mac G4" to see model specific pictures.
