What's the best external drive to use with Final Cut Pro?

I'm looking for a drive to mainly back up my final cut pro work, possibly do a little editing on, what's best? I have a G5 desktop.

Congratulations on your graduation.
On the hope that during your college career you learned how to do original research, you could show some clear initiative and read through those threads my link will reveal. From the drives discussed you might find common elements (praise or conndemnation) that show up after reading dozens of threads. Of the ones that get consistently good reviews by serious users, you can then go the website of the manufacturer and figure out if they fit your budget.
All this can be done in the time of you waiting around for a few people to chip into this thread.
Good luck.

Looking for the best option here. What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

You should check your date of purchase against the manufacturer's warranty
or guaranty since some of those better brands have some recourse should
they fail within a specified time period. A good reason to save dated receipts.
Since solid-state USB drives probably don't (all) use a wear-leveling software
to equally utilize their recordable space evenly, it is possible that some of these
may exhibit a failure in some sector areas due to excessive over-writing. If the
ones you use do not have such a technology or an undercounted total capacity
with a means to automatically write in other sections, you may have to consider
manually using a disk utility to zero-overwrite and reformat them occasionally.
Even so, that may only help a marginal flash or thumb drive work a little longer.
Should a camera memory card fail you still may be able to attempt with margin of
success, to +recover image files+ from it. re: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The standard default format they ship with works well for most file types; so if
you aren't moving OS X or Mac app specific files around on a USB flash drive,
the original format should be fine. Oh, you can use Disk Utility to attempt to do
a repair; but in some cases you may have to reformat them, etc.
    {Some of the flash drive warranties or guarantees may vary from between regions;
so if you have one with a '5 Year' guarantee in the US, other rules may apply in EU,
    or when you seek to replace an item under warranty outside of where it was bought.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What is the best external drive to use with logic studio?

I want to get Logic studio, but don't have enough hard drive space on my 2009 IMac, running Snow Leopard. What is the best, most efficient, external hard drive for this purpose?

What you want to look for is not so much a fast drive, although that is desirable, but a seperate buss to run it from. What i/o do you have on your iMac?

  • HT2477 what is the best external drive to use with time machine?

I already have an external hard drive that I use to backup anything I want to then delete from my macbook air. I also use Carbonite to back up everything on my mac. I am looking to switch to Carbonite to Time Machine because it's free. Can you recommend a drive? How do most people use TM? Do you manually back up once a day or do you set it to constantly back up your files?
    Thanks,
    Jan

I back up every day, I also have 2 back up drives, which you should also have, if your data is imporant to you.
A Time Machine back up, and a clone (which is bootable)
    I use a OWC Elite,and a IOmega.
    Use Time Machine on OWC:

These are but a few that are available for affordable prices, I have had very good performance from both, there is going to be many other opinions, and all are valid, I just sat stay away from WD as they have been problematic.
Do a web search you will find tons of drives, at different prices, and capacities, choose one or better still two and back uo to 3 different systems.
I use Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner:

    Also check into SuperDuper:

  • What is the best floppy drive to use with a G4?

What is the best type and brand, and where do I get it?  I need to transfer information created on older Macs which is all on 3.5" floppy disks.  Thanks.

You raised this same question/topic back in January (here), when you had no luck getting any response/activity from an Imation USB floppy drive connected to your G4.  Because it was speculated that your G4 didn't have enough power to run the bus-powered Imation FDD, you were advised to purchase a powered USB hub, into which the FDD could be connected.  To further complicate matters, you added "Some may be 400K disks but I think most are 800K DS/DD disks."  Grant pointed out that only Apple's (variable-speed motor) "SuperDrive" FDD was able to read/write 800K with DS-DD floppies.  This rules out the use of any USB floppy drive on the market today, because they're only compatible with 720K or 1.44 MB disks.  A Sabrent floppy drive isn't going to be any more capable than the Imation that you have tried.  For reading the 800K disks, you would be better off looking for a used PCI Power Mac (7300, 7500, 8500, 7600, 8600, 9500, 9600) for the purpose of transferring your files.  As to what you'd transfer the files, a USB PCI card and a USB flash drive would be a solution, but the Power Mac would need to be running OS 8.6 minimally.  As for reading the 400K floppies, Grant pointed out that you'd need to be running an OS version older than 8.0, which - on a PCI Power Mac - would mean 7.5x/7.6/7.6.1.  The problem with that is that a USB PCI card isn't supported under OS 7.x, so the flash drive wouldn't be an option.  You may want to check for any Mac User Groups in your area that might have the hardware to help you accomplish your desired goal.

  • Best speed External Hard Drive to use with Final Cut Pro X ?

    Hey all
I'm looking at getting a new USB 2.0 external hard drive to use with FCPX, I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on minimum speeds and what everyone else uses.
I am looking at least 1-2TB.

I will warn you now that I am somewhat of a lone voice on these forums for recommending USB 2.0s.
I have used the 7,200rpm types with their own mains supply over the last 6 years (and exclusively for the last 3) and had no problems of any kind.
Having said that I am not a pro with tight schedules (or underwear!) but I have used DV, HDV, AVCHD with and without ProRes and AIC.
Most of my projects are short though I have done a number of 2 hour projects with comparatively simple editing and a few effects etc. One ongoing project has some 12 hours of DV which I dip into  occasionally.
I have a couple of LaCie FW HDs which I stopped using a couple of years ago in favour of the much cheaper USB 2.0s and didn't notice any difference, though as I said I don't have pro time constraints.
Now is not the best time to buy HDs cheaply as the autumn floods in Asia knocked out many of the main suppliers, prices doubled overnight and have still not got back to last summers figures (2TB WD Essential £69 with free delivery).
    Look at the price now!

  • What is the best external display to use with Tecra A8?

This may be to broad of a question, but I am in the market for an external display for my Tecra A8. Around the 400 eruo price range. Any suggestions?

    Hi
What monitor size do you want to bye? 17?? or 19???
I have read checked the product test on some websites and the Samsung SyncMaster 970P 19?? is not a bad choice. You should get it for 400Euros.
But generally it??s not easy to say which screen is the best. I think you should visit some computer dealers and compare the external displays. You know you can check the brightness, brilliance, contrast and the reaction time. It??s important if you want to play games. It should support a low value. For example 8-6 ms

  • What is the best way to export HDV from Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 ???

Should I even use the compressor route? i want my to export hdv footage to dvd studio pro and burn to dvd. i want to understand the best way so it looks like the original mini hdv tape.
can anyone help that has experience in this area?

you can use compressor to encode your HDV footage.
believe it or not, you can obtain stunning results when you encode and output to DVD.
i guess my only questions to you are:
will you want to output a "HD DVD" or a SD DVD?
    how long is your footage?
in what mode did you shoot (720p or 1080i)?
what type of footage, overall, would you say you have (fast action paced, slow action, interviews)?
to be honest with you aaron, there isn't really a setting that is a "set all". compression is both an art and science. additionally, quality of your encoded file can be very subjective!
let me know and we can get ya started on the right track

My computer is part of the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive replacement program. What is the best external modem to use in order to back up my files prior to me dropping off my computer.

As Babowa says, get an external disk.  You should have one for normal backups anyway.
Actually, I'm a strong fan of having multiple backups.  3 copies including the original, 2 different backup formats, and 1 backup off-site.
And when you have your iMac in for service, if you have just 1 backup at that point in time you have just 1 copy of your data.  I get paranoid about my data.
But if you are just making 1 backup, I would use SuperDuper (free for a full clone, and extremely good software, as is Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not free anymore).
And then I would "Boot" from the clone, to make sure it was a good clone.
Booted from the clone, I would then use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to zero the original disk, as suggested by Babowa, so that when they replace the disk, the original disk containing your data is not in the hands of strangers.  A single pass of zeros is more than good enough as an erase, as the chances are no one is going to spend the money needed to try and read the erased data.  It is not like you have any super secret data, just stuff you do not want the casual data theif to get.  You will find the zeroing options under Disk Utility -> Erase -> Security Options
Just make sure you actually boot from your clone before erasing your original.  And if you are paranoid like me, make 2 backups, then erase the original :-)

  • What is the best external drive for my MBP using Bootcamp

Here is what I would like to do.
I have the latest MBP (5/2008) and I am using bootcamp with vista. I use my mac side and my vista side of the partition equally.
I am finding it annoying that I am running out of drive space on both side of my computer.
I am looking for an external drive that I can use with both vista and OS X. Do they exist? I am guessing any drive can be formated to work with one or the other but can any drive work with both at the same time?
Ideally the drive would be a wifi drive and I can save off all my music and pictures to the external drive and it would be able to stream the music back to my notebook on either side of bootcamp.
I would also like to plug the drive in and use it as an external drive when editing with final cut.
I would also like to use the drive wirelessly for backups with OS X time machine.
Is this asking too much from an external drive?
What type of drives work well with OS X/ FCP and video storage? Does it have to be firewire or can it be USB2.0?
Thanks for any help. I am asking because the 1TB apple time capsule is too expensive and will not work with vista.

    Edit Update:
When I saw wireless-ly all I am really looking for is an drive that can also be used as a networked drive. The drive itself does not need wifi (might be nice) I just want to be able to be able to keep the drive away from my laptop (most of the time) and plug it into my router so it will show up as a networked drive for both all my computers on my home network.
    Thanks for any suggestion

  • What is the best backup drive to use to backup a windows xp pc and to transfer that data to a new iMac i5 May 2011 and then to backup my iMac on it?

What is the best backup drive to use to backup my windows xp pc and to transfer these files to my iMac i5 new in May 2011 and then to backup my i5 iMac?

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

  • What is the best mail account to use with Apple Mail?

Hi All, I am a recent convert to Mac from a PC and I am on a sharp learning curve. At present I am trying to use mail on Leapord. I have a Googlemail account which I have tried linking to Apple mail but I seem to get the same issue many others have with send e-mails. What is more, googlmail's All Mail facility is doing my nut in at the moment.
Therefore I was wondering what is the best mail account to use with Apple Mail? I only have a Mackbook and an i-pod nano so subscribing to mobile me at £58/yr just to get the @mac.com account (which I assume would be perfect) seems a little extreme for me.
Are their any other account that work correctly and don't have this All Mail option.
    Thanking you in advance.
    Matthew

    Hi,
    I have 2 issues.
    1) I have mail 3.6 and when I set up the mail account via IMAP and STMP I recieve mails ok, but I can not send them. If I do I get the following window pop up.
"can not send message using smtp.googlemail.com server" it tells me my address was rejected by the server.
    2) I have 2500 e-mails in my All Mails folder on googlemail. Nearly all of these I delete from my inbox years ago (my bad mailbox management). Google seems to store all my mails. I want to delete these permentaly as they also get downloaded into Apple Mail.
    Hope you can help.
