What's the best way to back-up iPhoto library prior to update?

Am seeing this message when I try to open iPhoto, post-software update of last month.
I've been told I need to back up my iPhoto library prior to this update, but not sure what's the best way to do that.
I don't need to back up my whole system. Is there a way to choose just to back-up iPhoto when running Time Machine? Or, where can I access the folder that contains all my iPhoto images and just copy that to my external drive?

Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

Two different questions
the best qway to backup is to use TimeMachine or other automatic backjup program
However this does not allow you to reduce space since a backup need to be a copy of your existing library and as soond as you changge the library you no longer have a backup and sooner or later the photos will be gone form the bakcujp too
You need to run the iPhoto library on an external drive or had a complete library on and external drive and a smaller library on yoru internal drive using iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to move photos between the two libraries
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

os on old imac is 10.6.8. os on new imac is 10.7.2. I want the albums and events to stay intact. I have 4500 photos and 79 videos. 14.9 gb. looking for some advice here. Thanks so much.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

What is the best way to back up itunes library

I have my imac time machine program set to back up my computer every day to an external hard drive. I recently updated itunes and I lost some of my songs. I tried to find them in time machine but I couldn't find them. itunes support was good and I was able to download them again but I'm wondering what is the best way to back up my songs so I don't have to ask to download them again. I have a lot of podcast that I don't want to keep hard copies of they aren't as important to me.
As of now I have all the songs burned to a music cd but I just want to know if others think that time machine isn't the best back up for itunes and the cd's are the way to go.

What is the best way to move an iPhoto library from one internal drive to another internal drive?

the drive where my iPhoto library is store is just about full. I have a second internal SSD that I'd like to move (not copy) the library to. What is the best way to do that and still ensure that iPhoto will access the library in its new location?

Just drag the iPhoto Library package from the one drive to the second disk. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the library in it's new location on the second disk. Once you're satisfied that it is working satisfactorliy you can delete the copy on the first disk.

What is the Best Way to reimport my iPhoto library into Aperture 2?

I used the Aperture 1.5 trial version and imported my iPhoto library (most of it anyway).
I then bought Aperture 2 and I want to reimport my iPhoto library but don't want to screw it up and erase projects and things I've done in Aperture 2.
Also, I don't like or know how to change the Aperture 2 "folders" under Projects that reference my photos. I want to reimport the photos with dates or something to show what they are (wish Aperture had Events on the left like iPhoto).
Can anyone tell me the best way to do this so I don't screw up the photo changes (extensive) and projects that I have made in Aperture? I think I just reimport and make sure I don't import duplicates, etc. but I would like some reassurances.
Also, I have no idea what a vault or a stack is in Aperture.

There isn't a way to reimport the iPhoto library yet have it maintain the changes you made to images in Aperture. Now you can upgrade to 2.1 and Aperture will upgrade your current library keeping your changes intact.
Aperture and iPhoto go about their organization based on different principals. Apple thinks you'll use iPhoto for the snaps from your kids graduation or the family BBQ, hence the events. Aperture, being a professionally oriented program, is based on the idea of projects. That's why they don't have the same structure on the left.
You can get something similar to iPhoto's events in Aperture however, by clicking on "All Projects" under your library.

What is the best way to back up iphoto "files"?

I use time machine but this backs up the "library". I want to back up the files.
I have about 40000 photos that I just want to put on an external drive. If I highlight too many photos or events in iphoto and drag them into a new folder, it crashes my system. If I do one event at a time its gonna take for ever...Any advice? I am running a pretty old OS...
One of the reasons I want to do this is when I upgrade the OS, its gonna erase the hard drive and I want to make sure that the files are stored in one other place besides the time machine, before I upgrate...

File -> Export.
Select what you want to Export: Original, Jpeg or Tiff and then export to folders on the desktop. Drag those wherever you need them
Or, just drag the whole iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the External - that way you get everything, files included.

What is the best way to backup my iPhoto library online?

I am new to iPhoto, and I am starting to organize my photos and videos. Once I am done, I would like to create a local backup of them as well as upload them to an online backup service. We are talking about some 80+GB worth of data.
I was thinking about getting an account with CrashPlan, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with backing up the library online. I read that Mozy backup services doesn't handle iPhoto's library too well because it breaks it up into chunks to store it, but upon wanting to restore, it has a hard time putting it back like it was. With other data, Mozy apparently works fine. But I assume other services work in the same manner, so I thought I'd ask what experience people here have had with this.
I want an automated service, so that I don't to have to manually export the library to a folder each time, to then backup that folder. And of course, I would want that backup to be able to be restored (if needed) back into iPhoto, with all my events, keywords etc. as I have them now. I want both a local and an online backup.
I appreciate any input, ideas or suggestions.

FWIW I don't think there is a good option. There are very large amounts of data involved in an iPhoto Library - tens and even hundreds of gigabytes as your Library grows. We see complaints on here from people waiting days for their back up to download so that they can recover from a problem.
I personally think that multiple hard disks are the way to go.
FWIW my routine:
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

To move the Library
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
To have two libraries:
1. Quit iPhoto.
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them: Hold down the <b>option (or alt)</b> key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
3. On the +Internal+ Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
A couple of comments:
a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.

What's the best way to back up laptop?

Hi all,
This is probably a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. What's the best way to back up a laptop: hooking up a hard drive manually, or via WiFi?
In the past, I've just hooked up a hard drive to my MacBook Pro, and manually synced it with Time Machine. But, of course, sometimes I'm busy and I don't get around to doing that as faithfully as I should. So, I'm thinking of hooking up a hard drive to my AirPort so that my laptop will automatically sync over WiFi whenever I'm home.
Before I do that, however, two questions:
1) Is that easier to do than the way I'm currently backing up? Or are there problems with that route that I'm not foreseeing right now? How do you all back up your laptops?
2) I also have a Mac Pro on my network at home. Will I have a problem with my Mac Pro seeing the WiFi "Time Machine" hard drive and wanting to back up to it, rather than the Time Machine hard drive I already have physically hooked up to it?

What's the best way to back up to the cloud?

I am going to be traveling in the on a boat in Europe. Access to wifi could be limited and slow. I want to back up my photos and catalog to the cloud as there is potental to lose laptop and external drive. Since I have a 25 mp camera and will be shooting in Raw allot, there will be some big files as each photo could be around 27 gb.
All of my files will be in the My pictures folder LR set up when I set up my new catalog. I planned to back up these folders to the cloud, then send just the new folders each time I add them to LR during import. Then I was going to have the catalog BK that is created each time you close LR (just the data only is in this file) sent to the cloud as well.
Then if my laptop is lost I can copy the back up catalog (just the data file) and the My Pictures file that has all my photos in folders to a new laptop and restore my catalog. I'm told by Adobe help that this won't work as the connection between the photos and the catalog back up will be lost.
Is this correct? And if so, what's a better method.

You really have images that are 27 GB each? I suspect you meant 27 MB. But, even then, I think cloud backup might be cumbersome. I would suggest carrying a small external hard drive. I have a 1 TB USB 3 drive that is really fast and very small. No external power supply. Plug it in, and copy the files. That's what I would do.

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

While I have nothing against Time Machine (and I do use it on some of my systems), I always make a bootable clone before taking a Mac in for service (2 actually), and I verify that clone boots before I let the Mac leave.

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original. Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

A File History backup archive whether TimeMachine which is fine I agree to use CCC as primary but I also like something else or combination, one for system, one for data. And multiple sets. And even then I have needed to go and find a file version or something and glad I had online backup of something besides a once a week clone, which would not have helped me.
