What's the best way to move photo folders from internal to external HD using LR to track change?

I am trying to move my photo folders from Pictures on an iMac running Mavericks to an external HD as my main photo storage and to do so with LR 5.6 keeping track of the folders. I have 20K plus photos in the Catalog in the iMac's HD and wouldn't want LR to loose track of the photos. I am not creating duplicates but moving all the files w/original photos and edits.
Is there a good and safe method to use LR to perform this task?

In your operating system, move the photos to the external HD, keeping the folder structure unchanged, and then in Lightroom reconnect using these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

Use iCloud. First, on your iPhone, open Settings > iCloud, and enable Contacts, so your contacts will appear on all your devices logged in iCloud.
Then, on the other iPhone, open Settings > iCloud, log in with your Apple ID and enable Contacts, so they will show up on this phone.

  • What is the best way to move photos to external drive?

My internal drive is filling up and I'd like to move my photos in iPhoto onto an external hard drive, but stil view them in iPhoto?
What is the best way to do this?

You can copy your entire iPhoto library to the external drive. You can find it in your user library.
After copying it over, start iPhoto with the option key depressed. It might be the Control key instead so try that if the option key doesn't work. This wil give you the option of selecting a different iPhoto library. Navigate to your external har drive and select the iPhoto library you copied there. iPhoto will, in the future, continue to look for the library on the external drive every time you start iPhoto. You will not have to navigate there again, iPhoto will find the library as long as you do not move it and the drive in on and connected.
Once iPhoto is finding the library on the external drive you can delete the library on your internal drive to free up space there.

  • What is the best way to move Lightroom 3 from my old ssd to my new ssd?

I recently installed a new and larger ssd on my computer.  When I attempted to clone my old ssd, it corrupted my old windows 7 on the original ssd and left me with a blue screen version on my new ssd.  So after reformatting the new ssd and completing a clean install of windows 8 I am ready to move my lightroom 3 over.  I want to do this without losing all my work on my photos and I am not enthused with cloning my old ssd as it did not work and left me with days of frustration.  Please help with the best way to accomplish this.
    Thanks,
    Dan Rafferty

Install Lr 3 to your new SSD using the original cd.
You can also downlad version 3.6 from here: Adobe - Lightroom : For Windows
Then copy your catalog, previews, and images over from the old disk, and make sure everything goes to the same location as on the old disk.

  • What is the best way to move all information from LR 3 to a new computer with LR 5

I want to move all the information (photo folder connections, metadata, tags, collections, etc) from LR 3 on my MacBook Pro to my new iMac LR5. My photo folders are on an external hard drive so I won't be changing the location of them per se

  • What is the best way to  delete photos selectively from camera roll.

I have thousands of photos on my camera roll.  I do know you can select individual photos to delete off the roll and you can select more than one at a time but is there a better way?  I keep hoping there would be a way to select groups of photos from my camera roll while my phone is connected to my macbook pro through iphoto.  I was told you are only able to delete photos on your phone via your phone basically one at a time.

I import the photos from my iphone onto my macbook pro but I like having many of them on my phone to share at will etc..  I'm not sure how image capture will help me to delete many photos at one time quickly off my phone as opposed to the only way I know which is to select each photo, selecting as many as I like on the phone itself and deleting.  It just seems one could do this via the macbook pro with the phone attached much easier.

  • What's the best way to move a project from my hard drive to someone else's hard drive?

I've read lots of related discussions concerning problems after copying/importing/whatever, so I want to avoid those.  I have worked on a project since its inception.  It is currently in RoboHelp 8 HTML with several dozen LINKED Word documents and a couple of PDFs.Someone else is about to take over maintenance.  What's the recommended sequence, please?

Assuming the project is not under any form of source control, simply copy the source to a shared drive and let your colleague know when it is available. Just make sure they copy it to a local drive before they edit anything.

  • What is the best way to move photos out of iPhoto to an external drive?

I'm running out of space on my MacBook and I need to make room for other work.  Photos is what's taking up most space on my computer and I want to move them to an external drive or something...is there a best practice?

    Out of iPhoto?
    File -> Export
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
But if you want to keep them in iPhoto you can move the Library to an external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • What is the Best Way To Move Lightroom Images from Drive "D" to Drive "C"

I just built a new computer, I had all light room images in my drive "D".
On my new computer I have one large drive, and I want to move everything to the "C" Drive
and use 'RAID 1" to back up the whole system.
So,, How do I move the images over and keep everything intact?
    Thanks,

Well, RAID-1 isn't quite the same as a backup, but it is close.
Personally I would (and do) have my C: drive just be for the OS. And
    my pictures/catalogs are on separate RAID-1 drive(s).
So,, How do I move the images over and keep everything intact?
Depends. If you start LR, and open your old catalog, all your photos
will be missing (have the "?" on them, since the location changed).
You'd have to right-click on the "?", and "Locate" the files, in their
    new location.

  • What's the best way to move a project from one HD to another?

I have a movie I've been working on for 2 years.  The entire project is on an external hard drive.  I recently got a new macbook pro and would like to take the project off of the external hard drive and move it to my macbook pro hard drive (my external is starting to act a little goofy and I want to rescue my project until I can get a new one).
There is tons of media for my project.  I've read that using media manager is an option.  I tried this but am having difficulty locating all of the media to reconnect once I do, but all the media should be in the same place, so I can't figure out why I can't find a lot of it to reconnect.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?  None of the media is offline when I open the project from my external HD.  If you know a better method than media manager, please share.  I've never had to execute this kind of proceedure before so it's new to me.  Thank you.

The files will be eating up all your disc space and affecting performance. Setting the Scratch disc only comes into affect if you are capturing files from video sources via video cards or firewire/thunderbolt connections. The scratch disc records the video as data. The scratch disk needs to be robust enough to capture at a high data rate to capture uncompressed video in HighDef or Standard Def. This usually requires a RAID drive. If you never capture uncompressed video via a video card (AJA Kona/Blackmagic/Avid Mojo), you can set your root drive as the scratch disc. The problem there is it will hog up disc space. That is why most editors use an external drive to be the scratch disc.

  • What's the best way to move files from my old G3 to my new Intel DuoCore?

I just received my new Intel DuoCore 17" iMac. For years I have been using a much-loved G3 500 mHz iMac. The new Intel iMac is still in the box, but I believe it shipped with OS 10.4.4. The G3 runs 10.2.6. I have a dial-up connection to the Internet; currently DSL is not available in my neighborhood. What is the best way to move my files from the G3 to the Intel dc? Can I simply connect them with an Ethernet cable and transfer files directly? Or is my best bet to simply save the files I want to transfer to a disc and do it the old-fashioned way? Please forgive me in advance for my ignorance; although I have been a Mac user and supporter for many years, I am astonishingly ignorant when it comes to the best way to using both Mac hardward and software.
iMac Intel DuoCore   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

There are two issues - 1. Getting the files moved over, and 2. Being able to open them on the Intel iMac.
    1. This can be technically easy if you are willing to spend the time. I moved all my stuff from my old Mac to my new one by hooking the two together with an ethernet cable, directly. You would need both machines to have appropriate IP addresses. (go to the network preferences and pull down the built-in ethernet panel.) Some addresses such as 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101 would work with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0) Now go to the new iMac and make sure the finder is selected (click on the desktop) and under the "GO" menu select "Connect to Server". You will need to put in the IP address of the old machine, and later it's administrative password. Then select its hard drive from the list (possibly only one choice) and it should appear as an icon on your iMac desktop. You can open this like any other drive and just drag items to the new iMac.
    2. Whether you can use all the files moved over from the old G3 is difficult to answer. You may be using Classic mode sometimes on the G3 and have some stuff created with a Classic application. You are probably aware that the new Intel iMac does not support Classic mode, so some of these files may not be useable without a bit of work (or at all, perhaps.) For instance I had to purchase Appleworks to handle some of my old Clarisworks documents because Pages couldn't understand them. Once I had them converted to Appleworks documents, I could then convert them again to Pages documents.
I had some old MacDraw Pro documents that were equally problematic.
I would advise you to get the new iMac out of the box and connected to your dialup internet connection first. Do all the software updates until running software updater says there is nothing new. Then you will be at 10.4.7 with all the latest security and fixes etc. Then disconnect from the internet and use an ethernet cable to get the stuff off the old computer.
There will be lots more to do such as moving your mail, address box entries etc. later, but this is a start.

  • What is the best way to make a DVD from iMovie

What is the best way to make a DVD from iMovie?
    I am using iMovie 06 (Naturally) with iDVD 08. I have always used;
iMovie 06, File > Share to iDVD 08. And got pretty good results.
Some say the best way is to quit iMovie 06, open iDVD and import the movie from the Media button.
I have tried both methods in the results look the same. I'm interested in getting the very best quality possible.

You likely have one of the most expensive media converter boxes on the market today.
But does it work well with most macs? (my guess is that it does). But more specifically can it "handshake" with an intel based mac? I personally haven't tried it.
But you may want to read this for yourself if you haven't already:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1179361&tstart=2362
Assuming it works then the best format is .dv which this unit will support apparently.
