What's With the WRT310N Anyway?

Here's the deal, I've had the thing less than a month now.  My intent was to use it strictly as an 802.11n access point, not use routing at all as I have a router from AT&T as part of my cable TV/internet package, and it "should" have been easier to set this router up as a wireless access point.
It took a few false starts (the documentation listing how to chain the device as an acces point had different screens listed than what I was seeing in the admin tool), but once up I thought, "Good, I won't have to touch this again."
However every few days I either have to unplug it for a minute, or completely disconnect it from EVERYTHING before it becomes functional as a wireless access point.
Cisco/Linksys designers and quality control people, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS, PERIOD.
In troubleshooting I "supposedly" turned on logging, but anytime I go to the logs, NOTHING shows up in the log on the device and NOTHING I can do seems to turn that on.  Again, A PRIMARY FUNCTION that seems to be inadequately designed.
Yet another problem is when attempting to troubleshoot via traceroute or ping.
When I ping, I see only ONE response, even though I specify 5 retries.  I want to see ALL 5 ping results, not whatever you interpret as relevant.  When I try and use traceroute, I get an error indicating that the device can't resolve anything, even if I specify a valid IP.
I mean seriously, the diagnostic tools on this thing are already significantly lacking, it does you no good to not have the few tools you make available on the device non-functional. 
As far as I can tell there's no way for the device to report what connections it believes it has or any information on those connections, a SERIOUS flaw in design, especially if I want to review policies and restrict access on MDAC.
For the love of all that's good, please update the firmware, FINNISH it so that it functions properly and all the tools are available, AND add some additional tools that are neccessary in troubleshooting and managing a network.

Re 1. There are a lot of combo devices where you can't use the individual features alone. For instance, many modem/router combos (integrated router with modem) don't allow you to use the router without using the modem. The internet link has to go through the DSL or cable port of the combo if you want to use the router. So your theory is nice but reality is very different.
You cannot disable routing on the WRT. The WRT is designed to be a router. It's futile to discuss what else it could be designed for. Linksys designed it this way. It reduces complexity in configuration and thus also complexity of support to some extend. It's there decision. If you don't like the color of their router don't buy it...
Re 2. It's a home router. Linksys has never logged wireless connection activity. Linksys in general is very sparse in their logging. Again, this is a design decision which you have to accept. I know with other routers you have access to some raw linux logs showing all kinds of information. Again, this information often causes additional support calls because some people simply don't understand what it means and want to know if they have to worry about a specific log message or not. Or take Apple: their Airports don't log anything except through syslog if you set it up.
Plus, logging does not prove it's security, usability or reliability. Only because something logs "attempted wireless access from device aa-bb-cc-dd-ee-ff denied" does not make it more or less secure. Or how do you think logging dozens or hundreds of these messages could make your network more secure? And who do you think should generally read all those logs on a device designed for the average home user who has little or no knowledge about networking??
Re 3. Incorrect. If the WRT does not know a default gateway it can only access the LAN network. That's basic IP. Ping and traceroute work to all addresses in 192.168.1.* but not outside because the router does not know the default gateway. And likewise, the WRT does not know a DNS server thus it cannot resolve anything. The WRT is designed to have a working internet connection through its own WAN port. It is designed to get the default gateway and DNS server information through the WAN port. There is no other way to configure the default gateway and DNS servers if it's not through the WAN port. That's how they have designed it.
If you don't like it, well either buy a different router or install 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt or tomato (if possible). Then you get a lot more options and you have full access to the linux running on the router and you can configure anything you like and you can log anything you like (as long as the software running on there has logging capabilities).

    Briansyddal - you might be able to manage your phone without a PC, but many of us can't, especially those of us with large iTunes libraries.  How do you propose I manage my 250GB of music using only a phone?  Maybe I could go out and buy 10 iPhones and spread my library out among them!
    Catz537 - I have the same problem as you and I've spent hours on the web trying to find a solution to it.  It was a problem with iOS 7 and  8.1.1 doesn't fix it.  The the only advice from Apple is completely useless because it requires you, effectively, to delete and recreate your iTunes library and lose all your metadata, album art, notes etc and there's also no guarantee it will work.   I wish I could be more help (even more - I wish Apple could be more help) - I updated to 8.1.1 at 1400 today.  At 2200 I'm still "waiting for changes to be applied" for a measly 16GB of music transfer.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Unfortunately, iCloud does not offer equivalents to Mobile Me’s iDisk, Gallery or Web Hosting services. You will need to find a third party solution to replace these services. You might consider DropBox, SugarSync, MediaFire or any other service that offers online storage. (not all these alternatives offer all the services previously provided by iDisk)

  • When I click on an Icon on my desktop to take me to a site (such as google) I get a message that it could not find the loaction. Then it goes ahead and opens a Firefox window with the site anyway as if the message never happened.

    Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using.  FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in.  This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly.  By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you.  Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

    Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
    Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Do NOT use an iPod/iPhone charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
    I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know.  If the above test does, in fact, indicate a problem, read this.
    Also, according to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
    For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
    Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • Where's the music on iTunes, and what's with the quality and compatibility?

    I'm just curious as to whether anyone else has had this issue or not: Does anyone else feel like, after searching for specific songs, there's just little to nothing in the database? I feel like most of my searches are pointless because iTunes has either no data of my requested search and/or only has bits and pieces of it.
    Another question I have: After having a slightly successful search, why am I left with low quality tunes? I mean, you can hear the compression... badly. (I know it's not my speakers)
    Last question: If I'm paying for the song, shouldn't I be allowed to download a universal file? iTunes uses a unique format that no other application uses. In other words, more money has to be spend for m4a to mp3 converters (unless you're a cracker [not a racial comment]).
    To me, I value iTunes and its team, so I'm sorry if I've offended anyone. I understand there are contracts involved with the artists and it's hard to please ALL of the subscribers. But seriously, where's the music on iTunes, and what's with the quality and compatibility?

    Today I thought of finally putting lyrics on my songs. So I've been quite some time busy doing that, then I tried it on my iPad (2) and I can't find them. Just as the people above say. Then I went to search where I can find them and I found this page. I'm really dissapointed and I don't understand how something like this could happen. So I hope Apple will fix this soon.

    Downloaded latest update 7-27 and all I can say is it is the most pitiful piece of feces I have ever seen. Letters are blue with black background and you can't read **** because of the contrast . What was wrong with the white letters and black background, nothing except some idiot has to justify his miserable existence by making changes on a system that was just fine. Contacts are another issue now that it takes anywhere from 3 to 5 steps to get there. Unlocking the phone is another one , why should I have to unlock it just to have another screen to ask me where to go. I have been on the phone with Verizon as well as going to the store for help in deciphering this new pitiful update. The answers from the help at the stores is to email Google or Verizon about these issues .I purchased the original droid in dec. of 2009 and was happy with it. then upgraded to the razr jan 2012 and have been pleased with it till this latest update and now If I could get anything else  I would, another thing is I would NOT recommend the droid to anyone for purchase.I have even tought about getting the iphone at this point because I am so dissatisfied . when I decided to post this I tried the user name of irked , it was taken as well as ******, so apparently I'm not the only disgusted user.

    it's empty because arch is not based on releases .. basically, it has no version ... this point has been rectified some time ago .. i don't know why the -release file is there, but it serves no purpose as far as i can tell

    Yes you can, but they have made it very confusing as to that option (trying to get folks to use subscription -- please let them know what you think of this policy). The link is at http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software _sl_mostpopular.html. The default is the subscription, but if you click on the "I want to buy" drop down list there is both the full and upgrade versions available. It is so confusing that if you don't know it is available you would probably never find it. I did not find it until some other MVPs pointed it out and several of us have complained.
