What settings to use

I have recorded clips using a pansonic HDC-TM&700. The clips are recorded as 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9). I will be burning regular def disks but I want to watch them on a high def 1080P TV. Any advice as to what FCP 7 settings to use and what DVD settings to use? I have no way to burn or play High Def disks.

Use Compressor's DVD settings and burn in DVD Studio Pro.

  • Making the move to 16:9, but totally confused about what settings to use!

Hi, It seems to me that since all new TV's being sold are wide-screen, it is time for me to stop making videos in 4:3. But I am completely stumped by the procedure to work in 16:9. I have shot my footage in standard definition, 16:9. The final product will be a DVD created in DVD Studio Pro. I would like the picture to fill a widescreen TV, and.... when played on a 4:3 screen, I would like it to fill the width of the screen and be letterboxed on top and bottom.
I think that I am correct to capture this footage into Final Cut Express, using Easy Setup, and choosing 'Anamorphic'. At least that gives me a 16:9 screen in FCE.
But can someone tell me what settings to use in DVDSP when I when I import that video? I tried to import Anamorphic video into DVDSP, and went to Preferences, and chose 16:9 Letterbox. I got a wide screen, but my footage came in as a squished 4:3 image. I'm totally at a loss, and would very much appreciate any help you can give.
    Thanks very much, Bob

Yes, Anamorphic is the Easy Setup you'd want to use in FCE.
When I say it's distorted, that means anamorphic is recorded to tape squished (much like how it imports into DVDSP for you) and that the format demands being unsqueezed during playback. Sorry, if I scared you.
The encoding settings are also available in DVDSP's Preferences under the Encoding tab.
Also - and this is the single most important element of this workflow - in addition to setting the default Display Mode to 16:9 Letterbox, be sure to confirm that this is not overridden (for whatever reason) after you've placed your clips onto a track. So check the Inspector and make sure Display mode is correct. (It's been known to happen once in a blue moon and, if not readjusted, will mean that your DVD will not display correctly on any proper setup)

  • When dragging photos to desktop, what settings are used?

When a photo is dragged out of iPhoto and dropped anywhere in the Finder, what settings are used for that implicit export? E.g., what JPEG quality? It seems to export the full size.
Can't seem to find this documented anywhere!

In tests Old Toad reckoned that it was equivalent to about 8 on Photoshop's scale of 12.
Typically when I export via the file menu I select the highest quality. If iPhoto uses something less than that, then I'll stop dragging and return to the file menu export.
    Doesn't quite work like that.
If you have an edited photo then there is a single generation of compression applied. If you export at any setting other than Maximum the file will be smaller. At maximum the file will quite likely be larger - less compression applied to the data.
As to which is best to use? Depends on what you're using this jpeg for - but remember this, exporting via dragging gets none of the metadata you've added in iPhoto (Keywords, Location, titles, descriptions etc)

  • HT4995 Internationally using Location Services without having data charges.  What settings should use on my iPhone 5?

I'm traveling to Europe and I want to use Location Services without having data charges.  What settings should use on my iPhone 5?  I want to be able to use Trip Advisor City Guides Application to tour around cities for free.  I have a Verizon International Plan for my trip, but it is still pricey.  I would like to keep my iPhone cell services on for incoming calls, but I want to prevent international data charges.  Thanks for your help!

You don't "choose" to use th 3g network.
If you have paid for it in your plan and 3g coverage is available, your phone will automatically use it when necessary.
3g provides faster internet speeds than 2g, so you can watch video or download stuff faster. Wifi is normally faster than 3g.
Your iphone gps is "assisted", meaning it uses network data to calculate your position.
Also, you would still need the network to download maps, directions etc as they are not on your device.

  • I need to know what settings to use .... NEED HELP FAST!!

I'm using FC to make my documentary for state history day. I think my trouble is the settings before I transfer the video using Quicktime Conversion. I honestly don't have any idea what to change my settings to!! Right now, after i burn it my video messes up. It makes bar like shapes when the video comes up, the video is visible but it doesn't look very professional. The video clips are clear when I play it on my computer(in the program FC) but after I move it it does the pixely thing. I am burning my project to a DVD and it will just be playing on a regular TV screen. If anyone can help me I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!!!! Thanks

I am new to this so I am not sure what the file size is since I'm not resizing it.
The question asked about exported image size (height and width) in pixels, not file size. Your operating system can tell you, or if you import the exported image into Lightroom, then Lightroom can tell you in the Metadata Panel, set the dropdown to EXIF.
I am printing a 5x7. I know I have tried to print with long edge set at 1024 and set to 300 ppi and had the same result with the grainy ness.
If the exported file has a long edge of 1024, then you did resize the image, there no other way to turn a RAW in to a JPG with long edge 1024. In any event, 1024 pixels is probably not large enough to fill 7 inches, that's really 1024/7=146 pixels per inch (rounded-off), and could be the cause of the "graininess" that you see, although I would use the word "pixelization" to describe what you see. So I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing, but let's go with it for now.
The solution depends on your answer to the original question, and probably depends on a clarification of how you got the image to 1024 on the long edge even though you claim you didn't resize it.

  • Field Dominance and De-interlacing: what settings to use?

I've been trying to read about, and understand, the issues of deinterlacing and field dominance/order, but I'm having problems and don't yet see what the clear solution is.
I'm shooting DV footage with a consumer grade camcorder:
Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
    Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz
    720x480 NTSC DV
    QT Video Compressor: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
The problems are "teeth and vertical lines" in the quick movements and transitions, but fixing one (by changing the "Field Dominance" setting in the Sequence) makes the other slightly worse, it seems.
Or, maybe I should be using the de-interlacing filter on everything? I haven't found clear instructions about what destination material this should be used for...
I'd be grateful if someone could look at this web page containing examples of what I mean:
    http://www.karma-lab.com/images-pub/apple-q/fielddom_nt.html
Picture 1: NTSC DV frame, from sequence set to "Lower (Even)"
Picture 2: NTSC DV frame, from sequence set to "None"
Picture 3: frame from "Cross Zoom" transition in "Lower (Even)" sequence
Picture 4: frame from "Cross Zoom" transition in "None" sequence
    Questions:
    1) What are the correct settings? it would seem to be "None", because otherwise my transitions all have "teeth" and look like somebody is viewing it cross-eyed, even at full speed you can see the teeth in the transitions. But if I set it to none, then it seems that quick movements of the people in the videos get slightly more "teeth" to them...
    2) I am producing web video (quicktime/flash video movies). Not for TV or broadcast. Am I supposed to throw the de-interlacing filter on everything?
with "lower", it's jerky (half the frames missing, I guess) but the "teeth" go away
with "flicker-free", it's not jerky, but it gets a little fuzzy looking, and I want to keep things "crisp"...
I need less advice on the theory, and more advice on "set it like this for what you are doing." I've read some really technical explanations, and I understand why interlacing exists etc., but not exactly what I should be doing to get the optimal results for my needs, i.e. simply good-looking web video with decent motion and transitions, shot from a consumer level DV camcorder.
    Thanks for reading!

    What are the correct settings?
Since you mention that you've shot your material on a consumer-grade camcorder, that would mean that Field Dominance – in your FCP Sequence Settings – should be set to Lower. If you use None – and I'm sparing you the tech talk here – then you're basically rendering out at a reduced quality (as the last pic in your link demonstrates)
I am producing web video (quicktime/flash video movies). Not for TV or broadcast. Am I supposed to throw the de-interlacing filter on everything? with "lower", it's jerky (half the frames missing, I guess) but the "teeth" go away with "flicker-free", it's not jerky, but it gets a little fuzzy looking, and I want to keep things "crisp"...
If you really want to keep things crisp, you best quality option - within the Final Cut Studio suite of tools - is to Export Using Compressor, with the Deinterlace option in Compressor 2.x's Frame Controls to Better (Motion Adaptive) while setting your Output Fields to be Progressive (presuming that you'll exporting to QuickTime first, then converting to Flash. Having said that, this type of conversion can take a long time to process and may not be suitable if you're under a serious time constraint.
Otherwise, the speediest option is indeed to slap a Deinterlace filter onto everything (or nest your sequence then place the filter on the nest) but the quality isn't always what folks would like.

  • Camera kit  iPad: what settings to use in HandBrake so video will play?

I'd like to put some video footage on an SD-card and view it on my iPad with the camera kit. Importing it into iTunes is a hassle.
My preference is to use HandBrake where I can select a default setting and 'go' - I not keen to experiment with audio settings, frame-rates, codec etc. Looking for something 'idiot proof'. Any suggestions .. please ?

Have you tried the default iPhone/iPod settings? It's been a while since I've used Handbrake but I believe it still has defaults for various iOS devices.
For what it's worth, you're probably going to find that transferring video by putting it on an SD card is a far bigger hassle than using iTunes. The directory on the card has to match what a camera would create. The video has to have a name that the CCK can use. I've forgotten the exact requirements for the name but it's something like 8 characters.
    Best of luck.

  • 854 X 480 @ 30fps video what settings to use?

    Hi there
I have just aquired Premiere Elements10 and have a digital camera which shoots video at either 854 x 480 at 30fps widescreen, and 640 x 480 30fps standard.
I have noticed this seems to be the standard for SD Video (at least at 29.7fps).  However this doesn't seem to feature on the settings presets when I open a new Elements project?   The nearest I can get to 640 x 480 is at 50fps and there is no widescreen option which I would prefer to use at these settings.  Neither is there any custom option.
What do I do?  Any ideas?
    many thanks

Ok,  thanks again Hunt   I'm starting to get some idea of what square pixels are (I think), thanks to your link.  Though it is all a bit more complex than I imagined. So only HD is shot in square pixels?  Not sure what you mean by conversion, the only reference I can see to 1.21 is in the D1/DV NTSC section of Common pixel aspect ratios in your link.
So the SD footage this stock company sells is unusable in practice?  What issues might it cause?  It is a shame because I'd already earmarked a few relevant clips.
What about their HD clips at 1920 x 1080? Are they usable in Premiere Elements under DSLR 1080p25 without any of this messing about?  And if so would the best long term option be to get a 1920 x 1080 HD camcorder?  Would everything then live in perfect harmony and simplicity (yeah right!) and could I then just focus on the video itself?  Could I then stop having the nightmares about deformed square pixels?
But wait, would my PC handle HD editing or is that yet another can of worms?  I have a fair bit of power, quad processor, 4gig ram, Win 7 64bit.  Would the fact that everything matched smooth it out (dreeeeammm, dream dream dream)?
    I just want a simpl(er) life. sniff.
Btw here are the specs taken from the manual of the FZ18 (minus some unrelated ones) - can't see any mention of square pixels but they probably make more sense to you.  Once again your help is greatly appreciated!

  • What settings to use to burn DVD?

After several attempts, I have not been able to burn a DVD that will play on any of our DVD players.  They will, however, play on our 2 laptops.  I have read the user guide, watched the PrE tutorials, and Steve Grisetti's video and I am still confused about the out put settings.  I downloaded ImgBurn and still no luck.  I have a new hp dv7 laptop with cyberlink dvd drive (BDDVDRW CT40) , and am using Sony DVD+R rw DVDs. Our TV is HD and would like to get the best possible resolution.  After reading the posts on this forum, I am even more confused.  Should it be this difficult?  I should mention that neither of our DVD players are blue ray.  Any help would be appreciated as well as explaining what each of those many, many options will do.

Were you using the same exact blank discs?
It appears that you are using Sony DVD +RW's (rewritables). Is that correct, and did you previously use those exact same discs?
Many players have real issues with any RW DVD's, though some, like all of my test units, play them fine. I use the highest quality blanks, and burn at less than the highest burn speed (cannot adjust that in PrE, but one can, if they use ImgBurn, or similar). I use RW's as a last test, prior to burning my delivery DVD's, to save making "coasters." I never deliver RW discs, as some clients have players, that do not play those properly. In the last few years, all of my blank delivery discs have been Taiyo-Yuden +R's for DVD-5's, and Verbatim +R's for DVD-9's (DL discs), and I have not had one return.
    Good luck,

  • What settings to use printing epson prem canvas matte??

trying to print prem canvas  on 2400 from PS3 on mac. downloaded WC profiles from epson. Here are my screen shots. After i select the profile WC and go to print, the drop down menu from the Epson doesn't give me an option to choose WC profile. Should i select matte heavyweight or am i missing something? Tried reinstalling profiles, but i get the same issue. Any suggestions would be welcome.

First of all, your monitor needs to be adjusted properly. Whether you choose hardware calibration or not is your choice, but it is generally considered to be the best. If you have a printer at home that you can do a test print, and that print matches fairly closely, then you should be able to expect good results from Costco. Costco provides profiles that you can download that will enable you to soft proof using their settings. As far as export settings are concerned, these are what I would recommend:
    Quality: at least 85%
    Image format: JPEG
    Color space: sRGB
If you are concerned about file size for uploading you might want to resize pixel dimensions. The PPI setting really has no effect on print quality. It's the pixel count that matters. For instance, if you are ordering 4 x 6" prints and you want 300 PPI then you would want pixel dimensions of 1200 x 1800 pixels.
