What Side-Effects/Problems Can I Expect With Perian?

I have installed Perian in order to view downloaded .flv videos from Vimeo.
However, I seem to recollect a year or so ago, that some people were experiencing unwanted side-effects with other apps such as FCE.
I can't remember what these were or how to stop them other than by uninstalling Perian.
Any information on things to be aware of would be appreciated.

That reassures me . . . touch wood (aka knock on wood!).
I shall now forget that I have it installed but hope that someone will remind me if any of my pro apps start misbehaving!
Incidentally, yesterday I downloaded some 1080 x 720 HD videos from Vimeo made by friends, and when played back on my 40" Bravia via the WD HDTV they look very impressive. The MP4 ones play immediately on the TV but the FLVs need converting in Streamclip to MP4 (H.264 and AAC).
The only fault is that some occasionally show a very slight glitch, almost like a dropped frame, but it is not very noticeable unless you are looking for it. No doubt I will discover what I am doing wrong in the near future.
A couple of years ago I could never have imagined getting anything so good from the internet via a telephone line . . . . . I wonder when it'll be providing 1920 x 1080!

Hey Luis. I not only remember…I still have mine (OS 9)!  Works perfectly well…for some things; just need to be selective about what I ask it to do. (Also have its big brother Pismo running Tiger, which is still an extremely competent machine.) When I take them out of their cases, I'm still amazed at the G3's build quality.

  • What version of SVNKit can we expect with 11g?

    Hi,
JDev 11g TP4 uses SVNKit 1.1.4 which does not seem to work with the current version of Subversion Server (1.5.2).
    Error: svn: Malformed Network Data
The current version of SVNKit is 1.2.0 so the latest JDev plugin is quite behind by a number of versions.
The only workaround at the moment is to downgrade Subversion server.
It would be disappointing for the new release of JDev to be shipped with a plug-in that will work with current release of Subversion, will this be the case?
    thanks,
    Brenden

    Brenden,
I just did a test using JDeveloper 11g drop 6 (which is a build that Ace Directors got for testing, later than TP4, much earlier than 11g r1) - I was able to create a new application, import it into an SVN 1.5.2 repository (via HTTP), make some changes, and commit back to the repository.
    When I use Tools->Preferences->Versioning->Subversion, I see it is using SVNKit 1.1.7 (r4142).
I do have the SVN Server installed on my laptop, so I went into the svnkit.jar (<jdev_home>/jdev/extensions/oracle.jdeveloper.subversion) and checked the JAR file - it is, in fact, 1.1.7.
Frank - could I ask you to clarify please (it's actually the reason I originally posted something and then deleted it). I know that JDev 11g is built on a SVN 1.4 client (not a 1.5) - I thought you may be confusing SVNKit version with SVN client version. Drop6 has svnkit 1.1.7, which does appear to work with Subversion 1.5.2 (according to [url http://www.nabble.com/svn:-Malformed-network-data-td16423851.html]this and [url https://svn.svnkit.com/repos/svnkit/tags/1.1.8/changelog.txt]this, it appears 1.1.7 is the first version to work properly with 1.5.x
I guess we'll find out in the next week or so (or so) what version SVNKit comes with 11g r1 - but it would be awesome if it were 1.1.7 at minimum (like drop 6)

  • What kind of longevity can I expect from the SSD in a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

    Hi all,
I recently ordered a new MacBook Pro with the Retina Display. This will be both my first computer and my first Mac that uses a SSD as the primary storage device. As the title of this post suggests, what I would like to know is what sort of lifespan/longevity can I expect to get out of it? My current MacBook Pro was manufactured in 2007 and has a stock 160GB Fujitsu hard drive that has been fantastic for me over the past 4-5 years. It continues to run like a champ, and I would hope that a brand new SSD would be able to last at least that long. Given that the new retina MBPs cannot be upgraded or (easily) user-serviced, I am somewhat curious to know whether or not Apple's new proprietary SSD modules will give out/slow to a crawl before/after my new machine becomes completely obsolete. I have been searching for articles published within the past few months on whether or not the current crop of SSDs on the market are more reliable than those introduced a year or two ago, but alas, I haven't had much luck. Perhaps it is still too early to tell?
I found a few discussion threads on here somewhere where some users indicated that their original MacBook Airs, or other SSD-equipped MacBooks, were still performing quite well and responsively after a few years of use. Can anyone substantiate this for me? How long have you been using your SSD(s) in your Mac(s), and do you think the newer models will be able to last several years? I would greatly appreciate any insight.

While I think your concern is legitimate (it was mine too), I think to some extent, how long they last will be up to you. The individual cells in the flash media in an SSD have limited life spans, and SSD controllers have a variety of techniques to spread that wear around evenly (wear leveling). That wear is exacerbated by the controller having to erase a whole block of data when even just one page needs to be changed, and if not all the data in the block is still valid, more data than necessary gets moved (write amplification). To provide some extra room for all this reshuffling of data, SSD manufacturers build in extra space that's inaccessible to the user (over-provisioning), but it typically runs about 7%. (This is a good discussion of the inner workings of all this)
If you stuff your SSD full of files, so that there's very little room to do all this rearranging, I think you'll experience the slowdown you're concerned about. TRIM, which Apple's SSD's support, will help, but you can too. Allow plenty of free space on your SSD and perhaps partition it so that there is free space outside the partition (check this out to see what a difference it can make). You can't use it but the controller can as an extension of the built-in over-provisioning.
You also mention that you "will most likely use it to record several tracks and store my growing library of songs and videos." Why not instead use an external SSD connected via USB 3.0 for storage? They're relatively cheap, very fast, and keep the space on your internal working drive free. A BootCamp partition would also take up space, so you might consider using Windows in a Virtual Machine instead. VMware Fusion or Parallels would be installed on the internal SSD but the virtual machine files could  go on the external.
In any case, your data is more important than your SSD, so back up, back up, back up.

The digital inputs of the 6527 require TTL signals. As long as your device, whether it be a pnp or npn transistor, outputs a TTL signal, it will be compatible.

  • What kind of camcorder can I get with a non Intel Mac

I am looking to buy my first camcorder and plan to spend about $300.00. After reading the following quote about a Sony camcorder I am a bit concerned, as I do not have an intel mac, I have a iMac G5 Isight -2.1 cpu,2.5GB ram. I have iMovie 08 and Leopard. What kind of camcorder should I get with my set up?
"I also have new unibody 2008 Mac Book pro OS X - laptop detects camera right away and launching iMovie08, offering video transfer. If you have older, non Intel Processor Mac - forget about this camera - and ALL OTHER's AVCHD/H.264 camcorders - most likely they will not be working for you. So, please, do not write negative reviews, do not confuse people, OK? "

Something like this should work: http://tinyurl.com/ycy4rnu
Although list price is only about $200, with the extra battery(s?), Firewire cable, camcorder case, blank media, etc., that you will need if you do not already have them, $300 is not far off.
You can also consider other Firewire connected camcorders that are compatible with your Mac and OS.
Before I buy, I like to download the user guide for the camera I am considering and review it to be sure it does what I want. Regardless of which camcorder you are considering, if you cannot find the information about system compatibility in the camcorder's documentation, the retailer can help you find the information you need.
As shown in iLife System requirements, iMovie 8 can work with your Mac and a compatible camcorder:

Note that AVCHD and 24-bit recording have requirements beyond those stated in your system info.
