What to do about a "File Error"

Alright. Here's my sad story. When I go to turn on my iPOD, I get the little apple icon. It then goes to a "File Error" screen (the little folder with an exclamation point). I've tried to fix it, I went through all the little things that apple says to do. But, better yet, MY COMPUTER ISN'T WORKING! So, naturally, my iTUNES isn't working. I cannot get iTUNES to read my iPOD, and I cannot get my sisters computer to read my iPOD. What can I do?

Take it to the nearest Apple Store and let the staff there format the iPod on one of their Macs. Take it home and re-format it for Windows by downloading the latest iPod updater and run RESTORE.

  • What causes 'Unexpected end-of-file' error?

    Hi,
I am a photographer and an avid Lightroom user. I have two camera's (Nikon D700 and D300) and two computers, a desktop PC and a MacbookPro. Lightroom is installed on both computers.
For the last three photoshoots I have had this problem where 1 in 3 to 1 in 5 images in Lightroom on my desktop PC suddenly gives a 'Unexpected end-of-file' error. First I thought it was my camera. But then I loaded the images onto my MacbookPro and they worked fine. Then I took some images with my other camera, loaded them on to my Desktop PC, and, voila, same problem.
The problem specified: the image stops rendering a preview. A dull preview appears. At the top of the screen the message appears: "An unexpected end-of-file occurred." The histogram window stays empty and the image can not be developed.
I have browsed through this forum some looking for the cause and the fix. There are some mentions of it, but they all date back to 2007.
I run LR 2.2 on Windows XP SP2 and on a MacbookPro with OS X, version 10.5.8.
Please help me understand the cause of this problem, and help me find a fix?
    Thanks,

While the corruption in your .NEF file could come from any one of a number of sources, here is a way to recover at least some of the information if you own Adobe Acrobat.  Your .NEF file should contain a smaller JPEG file created by your Nikon camera when the picture was taken.  Even if the .NEF file is corrupt, the JPEG may well be intact, and you can tell that's the case if a preview is visible in Lightroom or Bridge.
If you try to print it from Bridge or Lightroom, though, you will get an error.  You can get around this by loading up a CODEC that will let you preview the files in Windows Photo Gallery.  Nikon has one available for download to use with Vista x32 at http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/index.html.en, but it doesn't support Vista x64, so if you're running that (as I am) you'll need a second party CODEC such as the one available from http://www.ardfry.com/Products.htm with a 15-day trial download available.  They also have a DNG CODEC which I have not tried.
With that CODEC installed and your system rebooted, preview the damaged NEF file in Windows Photo Gallery.  Choose the "Print" option and select the "Adobe PDF" printer.  Choose the "Postscript Custom Paper Size" option, and set the dpi resolution to the highest available (4000).
Go to the "Options" link on the bottom right of the window and uncheck the "Sharpen For Printing" box, as you can do this yourself with later processing.  Then go to the "Printer Properties" link to see the Adobe PDF settings.
Go to the Adobe PDF Settings tab and choose Default Settings: High Quality Print, which will set the resolution to 2400 dpi.
You want to have Acrobat interfere as little as possible with the output, so select "Edit" from the Default Settings tab, which will bring up the "High Quality Print - Adobe PDF Settings" dialog.  Here, turn off the "Optimize for fast web view" check box, then go to the "Images" folder and set the "Downsample" setting to Off and the pixels per inch to 2400.  Also, set "Compression" to Off.
If you're going to do this in the future, you can also "Save As ..." your settings for future use with a name like "Fix Bad NEF Files."
Print the file to a designated folder.  It won't be quite as good as the NEF file would have been, but at least you haven't lost the shot.

  • What to do about disconnected files?

I have used Photoshop Elements 9.  A few months ago, many of my pictures became disconnected (11,2261 of them).  Around that time we had severe thunderstorms -- I wonder if I lost the pictures as a result?
Their thumbnails still appear in my organizer but with a yellow question mark in the upper left hand corner.
I have always preserved the photo files on back up disks as I went along.
I recently bought PSE 11;  the program instructions say that I should convert my catalog from PSE 9 .
I am unsure  how to proceed --what I should do to preserve the information about these pictures?
What is the best way to proceed without messing up the new program?

It's important to understand that you get missing files when you move, rename or delete pictures outside of the organizer. You can't reconnect deleted pictures, for renamed ones, you would have to reconnect each file individually... So the reconnect feature is mainly useful for moved pictures, particularly when a whole folder has been moved, either voluntarily or by accident. An extreme case is when you have restored a  full backup made on an external software on a new drive or master folder (changing OS for instance).
If you have to restore a number of files by searching in a your computer with tens of thousands of pictures in thousands of folders, your first task should be to able to specify the 'exact folder you want to check', otherwise the automatic global search may take many days...
So the advice is to look in the organizer at the location where the catalogs expect the files to be, and to search via the explorer/finder where the real pictures are in the computer. Then you can tell the reconnect dialog where to begin the search. In that case, the reconnection is very quick.

  • What to do about iTunes files constantly disappearing?

Often, and more and more recently, when I go to my iTunes folders to burn a CD one of more
selections in the playlist are suddently "lost" (I'm a performer and a composer, and I often make CDs of my own works for demo). These are from Sibelius files, that I have to convert into AIFC format with a program named WireTap Pro, because Sibelius files are not properly formatted to convert directly into iTunes. (Does anyone know of a better way to do this than WireTap Pro?) Today I want to burn a couple of CDs and the first playlist contains 4 of 17 numbers that are somehow "lost" in the program. The only way to get them back in is to convert the Sibelius files once again to AIFC and then drop that icon into iTunes. This has often happened and now more and more.
Perhaps related: when the WireTap file is created, Quicktime opens although I DO NOT WANT THAT
TO HAPPEN! I think I've done everything in Quicktime preferences to prevent the program from
opening when I insert a CD, for instance, but these files are created within my G4, so the goddam
Quicktime keeps opening. As well, these AIFC files take up LOTS of space, so when I have dropped
them into iTunes I take the desktop icons to the trash.
SHOULD I NAME THESE FILES SOMETHING OTHER THAN .aifc WHEN THEY APPEAR ON THE DESKTOP?
Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. Thanks, James Johnson in Plattsburgh NY (big snowstorm today)

Are the files truly lost or just that iTunes has lost track of them? I occasionally find iTunes has lost track of a file but I can use Spotlight to find it again (if it isn't in some logical location since I don't have iTunes automatically consolidate my music). If the tracks are misplaced you can re-associate them when iTunes asks you if you wish to do this when trying to play a track. If files are randomly disappearing from your computer you have bigger issues than iTunes not finding something!

  • Does anyone know what to do about pixelated files (jpeg & raw) in Bridge CS6?

The problem cropped up last week when some images seem to never fully resolate on the screen (viewing in Bridge), like they were corrupted though they seem fine when opened in photoshop. The pixelation was at random in a batch of about 600 photos. Today it happened again in a group of photos I was putting together for a year-end review. Some are fine, while others are un-viewable.

Actually, I just purged my cache and it seems to have fixed the problem!

  • What is it about RAW files that make them difficult to interpret?

Are they not simply non-compressed, higher bit depth, bitmap files?
And if they are, then perhaps the issue with respect to poor "conversions" in Aperture has to do with lack of auto processing. When you open a RAW file in ACR it automatically makes adjustments. This doesn't happen in Aperture.

And RAW files are mostly shot using Bayer sensors - instead of each pixel sensing RGB, each pixel only senses one colour, with there being twice as many green sensors as red or blue.
    http://www.chez.com/hyffont/pages/Photos/PhotoEng/Theory/Sensoreng.html
Look at the grid diagram at the bottom of the page. This colour mosaic has to be translated into regular RGB bitmap data.
To make it even more complex, some manufacturers encrypt some of the data, such as white balance info for the Nikon D2X. The RAW format is not just different from manufacturer to manufacturer but from model to model - a .CR2 from a Canon 20D is different from the .CR2 from a Canon 350D, even though they are the same generation and resolution.
    Nightmare.

  • What to do about a kernel error

I have a Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac and am running Mavericks.  I am getting an intermittent notice of an error
Kernel extension is not from an identified developer
The kernel extension at "/System/Library/Extensions/Seagate Storage Driver" is not from an identified developer but will still be loaded.
Please contact the kernel extension vendor for updated software.
I am running the latest version of the driver -- is there a way to make this go away or to edit the kext to sign it?

Thank you.  There is no instruction for this I can find from Seagate.  And since it did not happen under 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) it is due to a change that Apple made to the system -- therefore it is an OS X matter.

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:

  • What is it about InDesign CS5 that someone would get this error message?

    Hi,
What is is about the .swf file that is generated from the InDesign CS5 interactive workspace that someone would get the following error message when they go to view the site I created?
"This file may contain newer information that this viewer can support. It may not open or display correctly. Adobe suggests that you upgrade to the latest versions of our Acrobat products blah blah blah."
The site doesn't seem to work for four Mac users, but works fine for at least one PC user.
I'm trying to figure out how to save the .swf file down to Flash Player 9, which I've done by exporting a .fla file, then adjusting the Publish setting in Flash CS5. But that throws a wrench into the works...all the animations go haywire by continuously looping and the scale of all the text elements on the first page is much larger than it should be.
    Thanks, Steve

this usually happens when a user moves or deletes files in the finder - a sure way to upset iTunes.
did you move or delete files in the finder ?
    I cannot locate the song.
if you let iTunes manage your library, all your content will be in <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music/iTunes/iTunes music (or media)/music. did you look there ? tried a spotlight search ?
if the files are really gone, and have been purchased from the iTunes store, see Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

what to do about Adobe Photoshop CS6 13.0.1 Error Code: U44M2P6? tried repeated installs and reboots. Nothing works. Am using Windows 8.1.

some files have probably been removed from your original installation.  system cleaners/optimizers often do that.
to remedy, reinstall ps cs6 and retry updating.

I'm still with you, just having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that you reinstalled OS X, which is like shooting a mosquito with a cruise missile, yet the problem remains.
Here is the KB article for your review: Reinstalling Mac OS X
Admittedly there is not much to it, but it should have eradicated the problem.
I would guess that the 17 "hp_" messages have something to do with Hewlett-Packard and in fact I do use an HP printer with the computer.  I uninstalled the printer software and reinstalled it.  The printer seems to work fine, but the kernel extension error messages still keep appearing.  I'm inclined just to delete these 17 kernel extensions and then, if the printer doesn't work correctly, unintall and reinstall the printer software again.  Sound sensible?
It certainly does. The only thing I can think of is that the OS reinstallation did not recognize those kernel extensions and left them untouched, AND the HP uninstaller did not remove them, AND the HP installer did not perform correctly. Having suffered through several HP botched software attempts I tend to believe that remains a posssibility.
If you are so inclined, I would remove the troublesome .kext files as you say, then reboot. Be prepared for the printer to stop working, but once you remove them try the printer again anyway. The vast majority of printers do not require any specific downloads since their drivers are already built into OS X.
As a last resort try reinstalling OS X again (I know...) and run Software Update to bring everything up to date. Apple released some new printer drivers a few weeks ago.
Finally, if this doesn't work post the same question as a new topic since I am out of ideas. A new topic will get more attention than unresolved questions with responses.

  • I get an error when starting firefox on several user profiles: the bookmarks and history are not functional something about the file being in use.

Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 workstations, the appdata folder is redirected to a network share at \\server\profiles and several users are unable to use bookmarks getting an error about the file being in use. I'm wondering if maybe my antivirus (Trend Micro) or my backups (Symantec) might be locking up the places.sqlite for these users? Though I don't understand why it would be for some users and not others. I can't be the first one and I'm not coming up with anything searching google endlessly. Anybody else run into this?

hello, yes this is likely caused by an external program locking access to the bookmarks/history database. you could try renaming the file in question & see if it is working when it is regenerated, this will clear bookmarks and the history though, so keep a backup...

It can be that you have an old version of Photoshop Elements and a new camera.
    Please tell us
Which operating system you are running on
Which version of Photoshop Elements you are using
Which camera the raw images come from (Make & model)
