What video cards are compatible with my early 2006 Mac Pro?

The video card currently in my early 2006 Mac Pro (2.6 GHz, dual-core) isn't fast enough for many of the recent games and I'd like to upgrade. I play games both on OSX Snow Leopard and Windows XP via Boot Camp. Is there a list of currently compatible cards available somewhere?
Thanks.

No, not really.... but a couple of tips...
1) when you're pulling the old card out, remember there is a black plastic retainer clip at the inner (front of computer) end. I didn't notice that, and now it's broken.
2) Get the 5770 from Apple, not a big box store.... those don't come with the power cable you need and may not work.
3) Plug the power cable into the mother board (?) first. It's fiddly, especially if you have big hands.... then plug it into the card, then slot it into the computer.
There are demos on youtube, but they all seem to miss out the fiddly bits.....!

  • What video cards are compatible with W540?

    Hi all,
I am new to this community and to laptops in particular. I have a W540 notebook and I am using it both for software development and gaming. Specs programming are OK but I'm lacking in video performance when it comes to gaming.
Currently there's nVidia Quadro K1100M in my laptop so I was wondering if this can be upgraded to something better so my gaming experience can improve. From what I've read Quadro series are good for the graphic applications like CAD or similar but GTX series are better for gaming.
Can my laptop accomodate any of the GTX family, like 7xxM, 8xxM or 9xxM series? Or am I stuck with Quadro family? Do those families differ in their size (so that GTX can't fit in the W540, for example)?
If the dimensions are same, would you recommend to upgrade to some GTX or stay in the Quadro line and upgrade to 2100 or higher?
I suppose changing the card in the laptop is not that straightforward as in desktop computers (there I have plenty of experience). Would the change involve also removing the cooling block and then mount it back on the new card including the thermal paste application?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks Felix, ugh, that is unexpected. So there's no slot for the vcard? I guess I need to learn about laptops some more.
I guess none of the options is really feasible... Seems just too much. Replacing the whole board seems like overkill, I definitely don't have soldering equipment nor skills (in fact I've heard about this for the first time ) and making it external is just too expensive and cumbersome.
Well... If I want to play some new titles I guess I need to start thinking about buying a serious gaming laptop and not trying to make one out of the W540
    Thanks again for the insights!

What video cameras are compatible with mac computers without having to download software?

Did you try connecting your camera to the computer USB port via the supplied USB interface cable instead of plugging in the SD card directly?
No driver is needed to connect your computer to your camera.

Regardless of whether or not you 'like' downloading and installing software on your computer, Canon DOES HAVE software available for your specific camera and it IS compatible with recent versions of the Mac OS X operating system. Maybe try that instead of whining here about it not being compatible.

  • What video cameras are compatible with Final Cut Express?

I live in Japan and was thinking of buying a Victor " Full High Definition" video camera (1920x1080). The only thing I was warned about by the salesperson is that unless I have a Blue-Ray DVD recorder/player, I will never be able to enjoy true Full HD after burning my video to a DVD. I guess regular DVD recorders/players can't support it yet.
I have searched to find a page that tells me what video camera is compatible with my iMac G5, but no luck. Any ideas on how to find out before buying a video camera? I would appreciate anyone's advice.
    Thanks, Larry in Japan

Hope you don't mind me asking why? - As long as they've got a F/W connector how does the source media make any difference? - In fact, I would think that shuttling around would be faster with HD's or DVD's.....
I also believe the salesperson was trying to say that he's going to need a BluRay deck in order to be able to view his HD material on an appropriately equipped TV - Which is correct, no?
Thanks in advance for any comments,

  • What video files are compatible with mac?

I am trying to download videos and movies, which file formats are compatible with mac?

Some types of AVIs and all protected WMA and WMV files aren't. If the component needed to open a movie isn't clear, the free MPEG Streamclip will reveal what it is or if it's possible at all.

  • What video files are compatible with iMovie

I am using iMovie for the first time on my ipad2 and cannot import mov files into the software. I presume it only likes certain filetypes.  Anyone any idea where I can get a list please?

There is a free App called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. You can drag your .3gp into MPEG Streamclip. Then FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME.
For HD sizes (1280x720 or 1920x1080), choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video Codec.
For smaller sizes, you can also use Apple Intermediate Codec, but h.264 will also work and will give a smaller file size.
Then import this new file into iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIES

  • What video cards are supported for os X?

What video cards are supported for os X? besides the one apple sells.

There is no official list from Apple, since they don't support hardware besides what they will install. YOu can look up support for certain cards, since people have used 3rd party ones. YOu should be able to come up with a particular cards compatability.

  • What video formats are compatible in DVDSP??

I have DVD Studio Pro 4 and I need to know what video formats are compatible in the program? I made an .m2v file but its too large to fit even on a DL DVD so I need to drop the .m2v file into Mpegstreamclip and convert it to something else and decrease the size so then I can drop it back into DVDSP and burn it. Any help with this? What are formats supported in DVDSP? Or, is there another way around my problem (too big of a file)?? Thanks!

Can you make the audio AC3? That may put you under.
Also keep in mind that if the 2 hour 2 minute movie is that large in file size, it means it probably was encoded at a high rate which can cause issues (you can try to re-encode the m2v in a couple of ways if needed)
As to the story issues it sounds like you made a story accidently. Take a look here
    http://dvdstepbystep.com/layofland.php
In the blue section towards the upper left, you will see the story listed in the track icon - delete the story and you should be good to go

Using it primarily with VMWare Fusion for Virtual Drives. Windows, Unbuntu and other OS running really well.
HPT Support was responsive and very helpfull using the WEB Portal under the product page.
I have some comments and a suggestion:
Have you tried your setup with a SD/CF combo card reader (like the Lexar or Kingston FCR-H63)? Does the card appear on the desktop when first plugged in?
Did you need to fool around with any kind of power issues in installing this card in the x4 PCIe slot of the MacPro?
Suggestion. Have you tried one of the fixed in this article to cure the BT issues in MacPro 3,1?
    Good luck.

What Cellular products are compatible with Adobe Flash -player?

To be precise, some OLD Android handsets will still have Flash Player installed, but it's not officially available to new ones (nor is it updated). There are some unofficial hacks in the Google Play store that allow you to install it on newer handsets but they're nothing to do with Adobe, and I wouldn't trust them all that much.
Kathymsg is asking in the Adobe Reader forum - so if she's asking about running Flash content within a PDF file, the answer is simple: there is no support on any mobile device and probably never will be.

  • What web cams are compatible with OS X 10.4.11 for 1.33 GHz 12"PowerPC G4? I want to use it with Skype. Please advise!

I wish to purchase a webcam for use with Skype.  I have a 12" PowerBook G4 with OS X 10.4.11, 1.33 GHz.  What inexpensive webcams are compatible with my laptop?  (Mine is the metal case.  The model number is:  PowerBook 6,4)  Please advise.

Also consider Apple's iSight web cam. It connects via Firewire which is faster than USB2, has a built in microphone & is self focusing. Here's an old review http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1383357,00.asp
    I have one.
You can possible get a used one for $30-$50 on Craig's List or eBay. Be sure & get one with the laptop mount. The first versions only came with a table mount.

  • Why are there so many problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro ???

Hi everybody out there using Mac Pro's early 2008,
I found out there is a lot of problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro.
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been repaired ones under warranty and now it stopped working again ! Also see under: Mac Pro early 2008 no chime and does not start up. Why is this ????
It worked well for about 2 years and then it just fails and i had this failing issue twice already !!! Is this just a BAD Apple product or how do you think I need to approach this. Let’s face it, these machine don’t come cheap and you at least expect them to work without problems for 4-5 years. What is happening here ???
    Cheers, Kavango

go to a black screen after 15 minutes or a couple hours
That is probably an indication that you need to find a new graphics card.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Where can I find what phone loads are compatible with CME?

I recently upgraded one of our CME systems to CME v10.0
I noticed that even though the CMEv10 Supported Firmware page says the compatible phone load for my 7911 phones is 9-2-1TH1-13,
my 7911's running phone load 8-4-3-16 all seem to be registering and running just fine.
So I must conclude that 7911 phone load 8-4-3-16 is compatible with CME v10.0
Where can I go to find out what phone load versions are compatible with CME or perhaps, at least, where I can find what phone loads are no longer supported by a version of CME?

    Hi Jared,
Specific CME versions are tested with the versions listed on the "requirements" doc like the one you mentioned (linked below), but are not limited to those firmware versions. The phone loads/firmware is completely independent from the CME/IOS version. And it is often appropriate to upgrade or downgrade phone firmware levels on CME and is fully supported :)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucme/requirements/guide/cme10spc.html
    I would look at upgrading the 8-4-3 firmware for the 7911's BUT you will need to move to an interim mid-point release like 8-5-2 as a first step due to the "important notes" shown here;
    Firmware Upgrade Issues for SCCP
Note For all SCCP firmware upgrades from firmware release versions earlier than 8.3(3) to version 8.5(3) or greater, you must first upgrade your firmware to version 8.5(2). Once you have upgraded to version 8.5(2), you can upgrade your IP Phone to version 8.5(3) or later.
