Whats next if all else fails with random shutdowns

Hi, having random shutdown on battery power on my 'macbook intel 1.83 core duo' no warning of low battery etc always ample battery power available.
Have installed battery update 1.2 twice
Have reset the SMC twice to no avail
Next stop apple repair centre, but what's the most likely outcome has anyone had this issue resolved by repair, and if so, what was the cause.

I am in the same situation, save that I have not yet tried re-setting the SMC. My MacBook is still under guarantee, but the local Apple shop can suggest nothing more creative than that l leave the notebook with them for a week plus. That is impossible for me -- any more than half a day, and I need to have a stand-by replacement into which I can slot my hard drive, but that is most certainly not on offer. It is the more irritating in that it is now apparent to me that Random Shutdown Syndrome been the subject of complaints literally for years, and comes as no surprise to Apple. I am beginning to wonder whether the AppleCare Protection-Plan was worth what I paid for it.

  • When all else fails!!

i was gonna write out this big ol'dissertation about my futile attempts to get issues resolved with my shuffle but opted instead to go the short version....
when all else fails, carefully hold the ipod parallel to a desk, counter, or other hard surface and slap it down...hard!!
VOILA!!! It works!! for how long who knows but it sure beats all the headache i was faced to perform trying to get any tech support.
    was i wrong?

I have found that percussive maintenance is sometimes useful as a last resort.
If it worked for you and your iPod is now healthy, then it guess it wasn't wrong.
I don't recommend that everyone try this as it could certainly have disastrous results.

  • IPhoto 08 rebuild of all thumbnails fails with KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0

I've used the option-cmd iPhoto launch to rebuild the database. This has cleared up a number of problems (Thanks, Terence and others!). Now I've finally got everything organized the way I want it (I think), so I took a backup and started the rebuild of all thumbnails. Estimated duration was 2 hours, but about 45 minutes into the rebuild, it fails with a KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000. This has happened 3 times (over the past week). I have reported it to Apple twice. It has never run to successful completion.
My iPhoto database seems no better or worse (actually 1 photo less), but crashing during the rebuild is scary, and I fear something worse will happen in the future. Below is the log from the error message sent to Apple.
    Anyone have suggestions?

    Roger:
First run Disk Utility and verify the disk. If there's repairs reported necessary then boot into the system install disk and run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. If no repairs are necessary try using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library. It create a new library and copies the necessary information and files from the old one which is left untouched. It often succeeds where the regular rebuild does not. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 2-3 hours so plan ahead.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • DPM 2012 R2 All backups fail with recovery point volume not available after resizing OS disk

I resized the C drive partition of my DPM server (the data is on a separate dedicated array) and everything failed. I put it back but everything is still failing with the same problem as here:
DPM 2007: The recovery point volume is not available?
I've run chkdsk for a couple and both have given the following after doing 3 stages:
Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
    No further action is required.
The backups still fail and the only error information I can find in the event logs is:
Backup job for datasource: Online\<VM name> on production server: <host FQDN> failed.
How can I find out what the problem actually is?
Is it possible to resize the C drive containing a DPM install? If so what can it be safely resized to? It easily met the minimum requirements and I don't know of anything in the documentation that says resizing the OS disk may cause issues.
Preparing your environment for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager (DPM)

    Hi,
Resizing the boot partition (usually C:) should not effect DPM in any way.  DPM writes directly to it's volumes contained in the storage pool and not through the mount points on the C: drive.    So is the DPM UI showing
missing volume next to some data sources ?   Try doing a DPM disk rescan and see if that removes the missing volume flag.

  • How to solve 'Reading Text Global Resources... Done' hang on loading CS v8.0 when all else fails?

I have spent a day trying unsuccessfully to load CS version 8.0 in Windows 7, following a crash. The load proceeds until the message:
'Reading Text Global Resources... Done', and then it hangs.
I have tried clearing the Prefs files of all files. Didn't work.
I have tried deleting PS altogether and reinstalling the program from the disk. Didn't work, and the Prefs files are empty now.
I have tried removing most of my fonts*, and it still hangs. Those not removed were the ones the system would not allow me to move or delete.
I have tried removing recent plug ins and software updates that might have caused the problem, specifically Adobe Flash and Java. Didn't work.
    What next, any ideas?
In the panic we all know and love,
    Peter
*in Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts or Windows\Fonts, can't remember which - does it matter?

    Hi Cooper,
If you found any other solution in these days other than the code mentioned above please let me know as i have a similar requirement now.
As you mentioned "It is not possible to modify variants with values longer than 45 characters",
So if this is not possible then how can we resolve this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

  • What to do about Backup failed with error: The target volume is read-only

This is a weird story. My wife has a PowerBook G4/1.33 GHz that she uses in clamshell mode with a 20" Cinema Display. One day under OS X 10.5.6, her Time Machine backups (to a networked 500 GB Time Capsule) failed with the error: Backup failed with error: The target volume is read-only. So I upgraded her to 10.5.7 and erased the sparseimage file, starting a new Time Machine backup. And it just happened again. Any idea how this sort of problem arises? My wife was doing something at her computer when the Time Machine error occurred.
Please don't advise us to upgrade to 10.5.8, because her PowerBook freezes not infrequently with any OS later than 10.5.6, and I was just about to downgrade her from 10.5.7 to 10.5.6.

Try repairing the sparse bundle, per #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
I've tried this before, but it can't be repaired, because it can't be mounted.
Any idea how this sort of problem arises? My wife was doing something at her computer when the Time Machine error occurred.
One possibility is, the HD in the Time Capsule is beginning to fail (all HDs fail, sooner or later).
I'm backing up to my own sparseimage bundle just fine.
Please don't advise us to upgrade to 10.5.8, because her PowerBook freezes not infrequently with any OS later than 10.5.6, and I was just about to downgrade her from 10.5.7 to 10.5.6.
Those two things may be related. Whatever's going wrong may very well be what's corrupting the backups.
I'd recommend finding out what's wrong with the Powerbook. It's impossible to tell, of course, but that may be the root of the problem.
There's a problem with PowerBooks and Cinema Displays. I've posted a lot about this. Even after a motherboard replacement, my PowerBook G4/1.67 GHz had freezes, and eventually Apple gave me a MacBook Pro, but I think there's a failure involving hardware/software design.
    If you haven't yet, I'd start by dong a +*Verify Disk+* on it's internal HD (also per #A5);
    That checks out fine.
if there are no errors, or they're fixed and the problem continues, run the +Apple Hardware Test+ from the disc that came with the Mac. (One of the discs should have that, and instructions for running it, printed in tiny type on the label).
If still no help, I'd be inclined to do an +Archive & Install, preserving users & settings,+ of Leopard, then download & install the appropriate "combo" update. That's a combination (thus the clever name) of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate (change the last "8" to the desired number). Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • All installations fail with Exit Code: 7 error

    Hi, can you help please?
I am trying to download and install the CC 2014 through the Creative Cloud app but they keep failing with the Exit Code: 7 error mentioned above.  The installation gets to 42% and then I get the error.  Rebooted several times and re-tried.  It happened first after trying to update Bridge CC, asked me to quit programs and Retry and now have this issue and cannot move forward.  Used the Adobe Cleaner to remove CC Desktop app and re-installed OK, but problem persists.
I can carry on working in my current apps but really would like to start with the CC 2014 a soon as possible
    Thanks

  • To Everyone with Random Shutdowns! (Solved! REALLY!)

    Hey all,
I had posted about a week back about my Macbook (Core duo white, late 2006), it was having the same symptoms as some of the others with the known random shutdown syndrome (RSS). Like many others I had thought it was the end of my macbook and the logicboard needed replacing because that is what the 'genius' people do, but I was still wondering what would cause it. It would randomly shut off! (or so I thought) I'd be typing in Safari, watching a youtube video, and even playing games, it would just shut off and I could hear the hard drive spin down. I'd restart and it would do it again sometimes right away, sometimes hours later.
This got me to thinking (like others have said) that it must be an issue with over heating. To test my theory I backed up my HD, and tried to reinstall Snow Leopard after zeroing the HD (as a fresh install). During the install process the Macbook's fan started to get loud and then it happened, it died again! So, this proved to me that it is NOT a software/OS issue at all, which means the said efforts in other posts of changing screen saver and energy saver settings had nothing to do with the cause! Aha moment!
I thought to myself... something is making it shutdown, obviously, and has to do with too much heat as the fan was going crazy even while reinstalling the OS. After reading many posts on different support forums I came accross the possibility that it could be the heatsink and/or sensor that is attached to it. I also found out that this "RSS" only applies to the non-unibody, core duo, and core 2 duo macbooks... you know what that means?
These models are the only ones with the shared memory and GPU on the same heatsink! GAH! A possible solution presents itself? To make a long post even longer... I removed the keyboard, carefully unscrewed the heatsink and fan and what did I see? Cracked and dried out thermal paste on the CPU AND GPU, they are both under the same heatsink after all, this was bad, really bad.
Luckily I had some Arctic Silver thermal paste in a tube from years ago when I upgraded my PowerMac CPU. Using some rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth I removed the crud on the heatsink, processor, and GPU (I might add that there was way too much paste on there in the first place). I waited an extra few minutes to make sure the alcohol evaporated, and then I applied a small (dime sized) amount of thermal past directly onto the two chips, I aligned the heatsink carefully and gave it a very small gentle push down onto the chips, reattached the sensor wire to the mainboard, and screwed the heatsink back in.
After putting the keyboard back on and making sure all screws were in... I immediately turned on the laptop and reinstalled the OS. The OS install took approximately 10 mintues! (crazy!) The last time I did that it took over 30 mins to install! I was stunned!
After the OS installed I let the computer idle and shut down, I let it sit for about an hour to allow the paste to contract as it cooled. After starting up again I immediately downloaded Temperature Monitor and installed it (I did have it running when my mac had RSS by the way), here are the results to prove my theory:
    My Macbook with RSS:
    CPU1 and CPU2 Idle temp - 114 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 128 degrees (F)
Approximate over heating temp - 184 degrees (F) (causing the heatsink sensor to shutdown the laptop)
My Macbook with new high quality thermal paste:
    Idle temp of CPU1, CPU2, and GPU - 77 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 84 degrees (F)
Running temp with adobe CS4, youtube, and typing this message - 103 degrees (F)
Pretty amazing if you ask me!
Before I applied the thermal paste my Macbook took at least a minute to start up with a fresh OS install, now it only takes about 15 seconds! I have not heard the fan spin up and go crazy since! And I can't even explain to you how much fast it is now!
This does prove that Random shutdown syndrome (RSS) is caused ONLY by your GPU over heating due to old thermal paste between the chips and heatsink! A design flaw by Apple? probably not because thermal paste will crack and dry over time.
This also proves that energy conversion to data in the chips can decrease because of over heating, causing the computer performance to dramatically drop!
So before you take your out-of-warranty macbook to Apple or a repair shop, see what your internal temp readings are and try to replicate the problem with over heating your CPU/GPU! This was a 10 minute fix! I am still amazed at how much faster everything is, and haven't had a random shutdown since! I hope this helps alot of people that think they are out of luck and have to pay to get it fixed!

I too have this problem as well and it has been getting worse lately, I don't know what to do anymore. Here is a little info about my macbookPro. I have the late 2008 unibody model, i bought it in late 2009 Refurbished from Apple. Recently my mac has been turning off out of nowhere. I may be doing something and all of a sudden it just shuts off, it usually happens faster when i start to open up more programs like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro. My mac is out of warranty now and i dont know how much apple is going to charge me to fix it. i mean they want 50 bucks just to talk to them on the phone (ridiculous if you ask me)!.

  • Problems with random shutdown after replacing a swollen battery

    Hello all,
Perhaps one of you can help with this issue.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 17" mid-2007 model. A few months ago, the power disconnected from the machine when the battery had already run down and the machine did a hard shutdown. When I booted it back up there were serious problems with the display. Eventually it stopped working altogether. I took it for service and it was determined to by the NVIDIA graphics processor problem, so Apple replaced my motherboard.
When I got the machine back from servicing, there was a rattle in the right fan that gradually got worse. After a while the touchpad button stopped depressing in the center. I also experienced several random shutdowns while operating on battery power. I learned about the swelling battery issue with macbooks and ordered a replacement. By the time the replacement battery arrived my original battery was quite swollen. I'm concerned that the swelling battery may have warped the case a bit, leading to the fan noise.
I have now replaced the battery, but I'm still experiencing random shutdowns after 20+ minutes of use on battery power. I have done the RSS tests that were recommended in other forums and there doesn't seem to be any random shutdown problems when I'm plugged in -- only under battery power. My understanding is that a swelling battery can sometimes cause the battery to disengage from the electrical contacts on the MB, causing a sudden shutdown. I'm wondering why the problem is persisting now with a new battery? After one random shutdown, I tried to power up again using the battery, while pushing the battery into place at various angles, but I couldn't find any angle that would give power to the machine. The fan noise is also still present.
Can anyone offer an explanation or advise on any methods to overcome these random shutdowns? I have checked the console and the machine isn't registering any error when it shuts down, although when it restarts it says "DirectoryService[35] Improper shutdown detected"

Yep, it is video (or: or audio for video) so unless you're sure you need it (because you work or will work with the DVC Pro HD video/audio codec), you can remove the plug from its' folder and put it in your documents folder (don't trash it, I have no idea if it is necessary for non-DVC Pro HD users to have it installed too).
The WWW is littered with posts from people encountering bugs and crashreports with DVCPROHDAudio.plugin as the main suspect. Most of those posts seem to be from video people rather than audio folks.
    http://www.google.nl/search?q=DVCPROHDAudio.plugin&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=or g.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
But, if you get crashes and you see this one mentioned in the report, disable it, restart, and see if the problem's gone.

does anyone have a hint how to fix this?
    thanks in advance

    Hello Herik,
thanks Herik, your hint regarding the triplet was indeed justified. i recognized that the OS was basically english with an applied language pack and i just had the added language in the repository. that may have cause the 'ist not applicable' error. even though the updates were downloaded and could be installed by manual starting them.
After i fixed the error with the triplet and added the basic language it worked a little better, hence installing like 6 out of 20 updates.
    the os is pretty simple
WinXP with SP3 english with german language pack
    .Net Framework 3.5 SP1
    nothing else
today i rebuild my repository from scratch after recognizing that almost all files were updated lately on the lenovo website regarding this model.
but unfortunately it still does not work reliably with windows XP -> on Windows 7 it no problem at all.
it looks like it detects all the suitable updates but does not extract them correctly to be used by the setup command issued later. it looks like this:

  • Installing Flash Player When All Else Fails

Hello! I have tried every tip I could find on the boards an still can't get Flash Player to work with Internet Explorer.  Flash Player is installed but not working.  I have Windows 7, Service Pack 1.  64-bit operating system.  Internet Explorer 10.0.0200.16686, 32 bit.  Flash Player ActiveX Version 11.8.800.174 (32-bit).  I have double checked that Flash Player is enabled in Internet Explorer, that the internet and trusted site settings are set to medium, that Active Filtering is enabled and that ActiveX Filtering is disabled in Internet Explorer.  I also upgraded the Toshiba display driver to 8.15.10.2189.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

    Hi Pat,
Thank your for your reply.  I am refering to 2 different things.  When clicking, in internet explorer (1) tools, internet options, security, under both internet and trusted sites, custom level, under scripting, active scripting, the dot "enabled" is checked.  (2) under tools, safety, activeX filtering is disabled.  When I click on a video that requires Flash Player I get the following:
on www.cnn.com front page - a blank video
on other CNN videos - "This CNN feature is optimized for Adobe Flash Player version 10.1 or higher"
on www.cbsnews.com - i just get a blank/white square with a small square in the upper left hand corner that has a black box with a white "x" in it.
on www.youtube.com - I get a message "! You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video.  Download from Adobe" but then after a second, the video works.
When I go to control panel, click on flash player, advanced, it says that the "Plug In Version" is not installed.  Not sure if that makes a difference.
I also checked my control panel, programs and features, and Adobe Flash Player 11 Active X is the only version of Flash Player I have installed.
    Thank you so much!

  • Itouch will charge on wall charger, but will not charge or show up when I plug it into the computer. All I get is a double beep and nothing happens. I uninstalled and re installed itunes. I shut down the computer and shut down the itouch. What next?

I touch will not charge or show up on the computer. It charges on the wall charger. I uninstalled and re-installed itunes and I also restarted the itouch and the computer. What next?

Play it safe with the charging.  Use the wall charger for at least an hour and then connect to the computer.  If iTunes still denies that it exists, go here:

  • Cleaned, restored, other still up over 3 gig. What next?

I checked Other less than 2 weeks ago and it was at 1 gig. **All of a sudden** it went up over 4. I have tried most of what I've found here - PhoneClean, iExplorer, removed all music, photos, apps. After taking all photos, apps and music off my phone, Other actually got *bigger*.
I've got a 16G 4s running 6.1.3. Can't update to 7 yet. I've played around with it and I am one of those "lucky" few that can't read the new fonts due to my vision issues. All I want to do is nurse my 4s along for as long as I can.
Did a "erase all content and settings" and totally wiped my phone. Then restored from backup. No joy. Other is still over 3 gig.
Did the QuickClean using PhoneClean and removed everything. Did the "remove the f files" using iExplorer.
There is some discepancy between what I see on my phone (5.1GB), iExplorer (4.3 GB) and iTunes (3.76 GB) so not sure if maybe iTunes is misreporting.
Anybody out there have any idea what to do next??? Everything I've been able to find says when all else fails, do a restore. So is there something I'm missing?

Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup...
But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup...
Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

  • Elements 9, DSLR H.264 - What codec is best to edit with & highest quality?

    Hello All,
I have quite a bit of DSLR footage I recently shot using a Canon 5d.  I have Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and it really chokes down the system.  I have a PC with i7 and 8 gigs of RAM.
What would be the best file format to convert the H.264 footage for editing while maintaining the highest quality possible.  The footage was shot at 24fps.  Please give a detailed description of how to convert it - there are a lot of adjustable settings in the advanced tab of the share section in PrE 9.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Brian

    Bill,
Is probably right , as he is most times when he is drinking Aussie wine.
I only have PE 4 and when you bring the H.264 mov in there you get a red line, you are better off rendering the working area as it will run smoother.
Ps.  You should not be having problems with the audio, I have just finished editing 35 mins jazz from a live performance, if there is a red line from the h.264mov files as Bill said , you should render the lot. Changing the audio should be easy, but save as you go
Ah, I do not know why there are two track of video in there, you should have one video+ 1 audio track together, unless you have added another video track ?
Ps. If the playback stops and the music continues you have a problem, It has happened to me.You are running a 32 bit piece of software in a 64 bit operating system, it may help if you download  Running Windows XP Mode with Windows Virtual PC as I used to lose files and windows in PP and PE, but, other experts here will tell you it is not necessary, it is worth a try ?
I would start a new project , Clean the Media Cache, bring the H.264mov clips in one by one and  have no gaps , do not disconnect the audio from the video.
Good luck ( you could try Adobe Technical Service, if all else fails ) ?

  • Installation fails with "internal error 2502"

I have a client running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition (32 bit) and my app's CVI-built installer fails with "Internal Error 2502".
This installation kit has been successfully deployed on hundreds of computers with various versions of Windows and I have never seen this one. No device drivers or advanced libraries - just the standard runtime. I use CVI 9.0.1.
Searches reveal very little - some old issues with Office installation, date/time settings etc. but I have yet to find anything that indicates what this error represents.
Any insights or ideas very welcome.
    Thanks,
    Ian
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That appears to be a Windows Installer (MSI) error, and can have many different causes. Can you confirm that anyWindows installers (perhaps try newest Adobe Reader) work on that system? Is the system's date/time set correctly? Could there be a permissions restriction with C:\Windows\system32 or C:\Programs\National Instruments\Shared?
I'd also try doing an internet search for "installer error 2502" and see what other tips you might find. If all else fails, try running the installer from the command line like this:
    setup.exe /log install_log.txt
That will generate a log file that might contain a hint for us.
