When Building Blocks Explode in Microsoft Word

Pushing out a Word 2010 SP1 template to approximately 150+ machines. There are several building blocks on the template, two of which are causing me problems. The major difference seen is that these problematic building block options contain nested content
controls.
When I click the option in the building block with nested content controls, the building block control stretches to 19 pages.  The option should only be the length of an ordinary five sentence paragraph.
Fired up a Virtual Machine to see how the template behaved there.  It works fine.  Tried on a laptop... no problem.  This led me to believe that since I had a dev machine with visual studio and vsto and such, that my machine was just 'special'.
Until... one of my beta users ran into the same problem with there basic non dev laptop.
Have tested on about 10 machines and so far it is just the 2 that are having problems.  Have un/re installed which was a no go.
Any ideas as to what causes this?  Missing Update, Registry Setting, Word Setting

Do not delete normal.dot or normal.dotm!
You can rename these as a diagnostic but deleting them can cost you many hours of work without providing any benefit.
Is Word 2010 the program on each computer?
Did any of them have earlier versions of Word on them? When they open Word from scratch, do any of them show "Compatibility Mode" in the title bar?

  • When I try and open Microsoft Word 2011 documents they start opening one after another at a rapid speed and I can't stop it. I reboot and same thing happens?

When I try and open Microsoft Word 2011 documents on my  IMAC they start opening one after another at a rapid speed and I can't stop it. I reboot and same thing happens. The documents open in rapid succession on their own and don't stop until I force close or after maybe 100 or more open I start getting the following message for each document attemting to open "This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document" and then in paretheses the name of the document. After I click okay another trys to open. Any suggestions?

If you had multiple documents open and quit the app without closing all of the docs first, it will open them again when you launch the app. Open Word, and then close all the documents, you may be asked to save the document, if the document was already saved but you made changes to it before you quit the app, you may need to save the changes first, shorcut ( command and s keys). After you close all of the documents then quit the app and restart the computer. See if this works.

  • When I paste a Pages document into an email it looks totally different.  Even when I export it too Microsoft Word the Word document looks different.  Apparently this does not happen if you have Word on your computer.  Does anyone have experience?

I need to be able to copy/paste documents into the body of an email and have them look exactly like the original document.  I could always do this on my PC using Microsoft Word.  And all writers submitting work to agents do this.   I just tried it with Apple's Pages and when I pasted it into the body of the email, the document looked totally different . . . no double spacing, no paragraphing  etc.  Even when I exported the document to Word, I copy/pasted it into an email and it looked totally different.  I suspect Apple's version of Word does not perform like the real Word in all circumstances . . . Before I go out and buy Word and put it on my Apple, I would like to know if anyone else has had this issue and how they may have dealt with it.  Thanks.

Drag and drop the file into the email, the formatting will be retained when it is opened by the recipient.

  • How to get the name of the selected building block in a building block content control?

    Hello,
How can I obtain the name of the selected building block in a building block content control?
I want to use this together with an on exit-event to populate other content Controls depending on the name of the selected building block item.
    Environment: Word 2010.
    Thanks,
    Peeter

    Hi Peeter,
As far as I know the building block is the pre-built content, and the
BuildingBlock object represents a building block in a template. After add the building block to the document, it inserts the content to the document.
Building blocks are stored in the templates, therefore, to access the building blocks available for a document, we need to access an attached template.
So, I think, we can’t obtain selected building block in the document.

I am working in InDesign on a Windows XP computer. When I paste text from Microsoft Word into InDesign the text loses its formatting such as italics and bold. Is there any way to maintain that formatting? I am supplied with this text by a client and I have so much formatting to do that the projects take me longer than necessary.

... and don't forget to run this set of macros in Word BEFORE you do copy/paste ;)

  • Microsoft Word Office 2012 wont open

Hello I purchased my computer with Office 2010 in May 2010. It works great and everything but recently when I am on the internet and click a file to open and/or download it ask me to enter my product key. I never had to install that before because it came
with my computer. When I go to the Start menu, Program features and Office 2010 it only gives the option to uninstall not repair. For me to get my files I have to save it to my computer, go to the start menu and launch Microsoft Word and then find it in the
Open tab. Please help this is pretty annoying.

    Hi
Did you mean your Word program works well when you go to Start>Microsoft Word and launch the program?
If it is true, there might be something wrong with your default open program.
First locate your Office installation path, and find winword.exe.
Right click on the file, Open with>Select default program>Look for another app on this computer go to the right path and select the winword.exe. Remember to check the option: Use this program for all doc/docx files.

  • MacBook Air + Microsoft Word + Track Changes = nightmare

I work part-time as an editor.  I use Microsoft Word on my MacBook Air and while I love my Mac for a million other things, it absolutely ***** when it comes to using Microsoft Word in Track Changes mode.  After just a little editing, the program crashes.  It's constant, it's regular, and it's a total nightmare.  How can I best get around this problem without having to use a PC to do my editing?

I'd recommend reinstalling Office, then. I use Word of Mac '11 (same version) without any issues working with track changes. I will say that it can sometimes be a bit sluggish (the application) as the document ages and the amount of changes that occur but never once has the application locked up entirely, crashed or quit on me.

  • Can't open Microsoft Word document through SharePoint

Since upgrading to Firefox 35, I am no longer able to open Microsoft Word files through SharePoint. When I select "Edit in Microsoft Word," I get the error message "No connectivity with the server. [FILENAME] can't be opened because the server couldn't be contacted."
Note that this is specific to my Mac. I can open Word files on SharePoint when I use my VMWare Windows simulator.
    Any suggestions for a fix?

see if any of these can help.

Are you using Office 2004 on a Mac running Lion or later? If so, see:
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Microsoft word does not launch because of shared library error

The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "-<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_System>"
that is the message i got when i tried to use microsoft word, how do i fix it?

See if reinstalling Word fixes it. Otherwise, since Word is not an Apple product, you should consider posting your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products, as they are geared more toward the issue than an Apple forum:

  • Unable to open embedded Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet in Microsoft Word 2013 docx document?

Below is the steps to reproduce this issue.
    1. Open Microsoft Word 2013, create a blank Word document.
    2. Insert Ole object of type Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet or Microsoft Word 97-2003 document.
    3. Save the document as Docx format and close the document. (Saving as Doc format works fine)
    4. Open the saved Docx format in Microsoft Word 2013, now try opening the Ole object.
    5. Error message is thrown as below image.

    Hi,
This issue might be caused by the third-party software/add-in on your machine, interfering with the OLE process (the technical thing that lets you create/edit an object from an outside application inside Word).
Based on my tested with my local environment (Office 2013 & Windows8.1), if I enabled some Excel Com add-ins with Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet, I would get the same error when I embedded it to Microsoft Word 2013 DOCX file. Then, I go to Excel>file>options>add-ins.
Then down the bottom select COM Add-ins from the drop down menu and hit go. Uncheck everything. After that, I could embedded the Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet well.
Please try the suggestion and hope it's helpful.
