I have never seen it but then I run SL which is much more reliable than Lion..

  • Does anyone know why my finder window resizes when I enter time machine?

Can anyone explain why my finder changes size when I enter time machine? I'm pretty sure this didn't happen on Snow Leopard but it does since I installed Lion. It's only a small glitch but it's rather annoying since I have positioned and resized the finder window on my desktop to the place I want it - in the centre of the screen and showing all the folders in my sidebar list. When I enter time machine the finder window becomes shorter, therefore not showing all the sidebar folders. I wouldn't mind if when I exit time machine it reverts back to the way it was but it doesn't so I have to resize over again!
    Anyone know why this happenes?

Take a snapshot of this issue and send it to Apple. I think it may be a small glitch.

  • Timemachine does not show time line when choosing 'Enter time machine'

    Hi all,
I have been using TM with my Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server without any problems until today. TM still does the backups OK, but when I select 'Enter time machine' the user interface does not get deployed fully. I will show the Finder window in the middle of the screen, but the timeline does not appear. Not happens next; the underlaying desktop stays visible. When I close the window by clicking the red button I see briefly flash a part of the TM bar at the bottom of the screen and then it returns to normal desktop use.
Does anybody know why TM will not start the restore interface and how I can get it fixed?
Thanks a bunch for any replies.

  • When I "Enter Time Machine," nothing happens.  Is there some way to fix this?

I wanted to replace a file with an older version, and when I tried to enter Time Machine from the menu bar, nothing happened.  I restarted the computer and tried it again and still nothing.
I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7.5.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, Enter Time Machine and cannot see any previous backup at all

MBP, upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.
After "Enter Time Machine", the time line on the right side of the screen does not show any previous backup at all.
In Finder, I can see the backup folder and the inside contents.
In Time Machine Preference, I did select the disk for backup again.
    Any idea ?  Thank you.

Thank you for your reply and the links.
    I did this:
    1) I have two ext. USB drives for the MBP time machine backup, did not occur to me to try the other one which is the very first disk, let's call it disk 1, I used for backup, the other one I started using after a year or so.
    2) reboot with the disk 1 connected
    3) do a "Backup Now", and I forgot the exact dialogs and what they say.
    4) something like, "choose a disk for the backup", I chose disk 1
    5) it knows I had two disk for backup and ask me if I want to use two disk for backup, click yes
    6) the time machine pref. says something like initial backup (after new system installed?)
    7) after it done, I can see the previous time machine back up and the time line goes back to where it was before.
    8) connect the disk 2 and "Backup Now", it just went to backup right away, after it's done, I can see the prev. backups and the time line too.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • HT3275 I am trying to access old photos in time machine. My initial back up was in 2012. When I enter time machine through iphoto, it only returns me to 2013. Were my previous backups and therefore, photos deleted?

I have been trying to access my old photographs, which I initally backed up on using a seagte external hard drive. I used Time Machine to back up my computer onto the hard drive. I later deleted some files and images to make room on my hard drive. I have openned iphoto and tried to browse my old backups but it is only allowing me to view back to 2013, but my initial back up was in 2012. Have my previous back ups been deleted? Why can I not access my old photos?

how do I view the photos ? I backed up with iPhoto closed as recommended but when I enter the Time Machine and click on iPhoto library it calculates there is 11gb in there so files must be present but when i click on open with iPhoto nothing happens ? any help welcome please !!??

The external hard drive must connect to your Mac using a USB or FireWire connection.
Note that the hard drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work correctly with the iPhoto Library and be backed up to the Time Capsule and with the backups of your Mac.
We are really talking about iPhoto uses here, so you should post in the iPhoto Support area for more details about this. The link is just below.

  • When I enter Time Machine nothing is there

I need to restore something but when I pick my date the files are all black.  As if nothing is there. Is it possible?
Somebody cleaned my HD and transferred all to external drive. When he reinstalled, a bunch of  Apple apps were missing inc iPhoto, Garage Band, iWork's etc. When I go back to an earlier TM date, black. Could it be he erased my TM too?

Take a look at Migration Assistant on your Mac to check if it might be able to see the backups that Time Machine cannot.
Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant.

  • External hard drive not appearing when entering time machine.

Why does my external hard drive back up on time machine ok, but when I enter time machine (and the external device isn't plugged in) i can't see it?
It appears in time machine fine when the external drive is plugged in, but just not if it's been ejected or
I want to have the ext drive backed up in case I lose it or it corrupts....and if that happens I won't be able to plug it in to see the drive in TM - does that make sense?
I am running OSX 10.9.3 on a Mid 2010 Mac Book Pro. The external drive is a samsung and is formatted to Mac OS Extended (journaled). Time Machine is a standard Apple one and has been working fine for a couple of years

Try holding down the Option Key when selecting the Time Machine menu, then select Brows Other Time Machine Disks. See if you can then browse the backup of that drive. The normal Time Machine display is kind of a “live” restore point thing, if that makes sense.
I’m not sure if there is anything in Pondini’s FAQ, but you might peruse it and see if he discusses that issue: http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

  • Time Machine is only keeping one day.  Im missing ALL other BU, please help

TM has been telling me that there is not enough space to complete a back up.  However, when I enter time machine there is only 1 day of back ups.  When I go to TM Preferences and select disk there are now 2 Data Disks, where there only used to be one.  When I click on  Data under "Backup Disks it asks me if I want to remove the disk.  I have cancled this action and clicked on Data under Available Disks and I am still getting a not enough memory error. (26.6G 999MB left) .
I have searched the web and found http://pondini.org I followed a few options there.  One, I have done a complete reset of the TM by removing the .plist file.
When that didnt work I tried to remove the .sparebundle file under Disk Utility.  The TM wouldnt mount therefore I was unable to finsd the .sparsebundle
If anyone could help that would be fantastic. I have several years of BU on this TM and pics of my kids to loose those would be devistating.

When I open up my data file there is a pic of my HD called Sparse Bundle.  There are 3 different sparse bundles listed under the center column. iMac, my Macbook and a Macbook Pro.
Right.  Those are the containers for the backups of each Mac.
I posted a screen shot of what I was referring to above.  I am unable to click on the Back Up Destination
You don't need to, but if you select Data under Available Disks, that will re-select it -- re-establish the info TM needs to locate it.
As far as my iMac, I am not sure what happend but I had to delete the entire HD and reinstall the operrating system.
Ah, that's part of the problem.  Exactly how did you put your data back?  When your Mac started up after installing OSX, you saw this window:
Which option did you take?  It sounds like you selected Not Now and created a user account.  If so, what have you done since then?
According to my TC I have not backed up in 63 days and but there is nothing there.
Depending on what you did, Time Machine is treating the erased disk as being a different one from your backups.  It will do a full backup of the "new" drive, space permitting.
My TC is 4 years old and is 1 TB.  TC shows 23.5 of 998 GB available. My TC shows it has stuff on there I just cant gett to it.
If the new drive is being treated as a different one, you should be able to see the old backups via the procedure in the green box of #E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  Don't try to restore anything from there just yet, though.
TC is now showing the latest BU as of June 30, 2013, before it would say none.  It is not showing an estimated BU becuse it is "preparing backup"
If you can see the older backups as above, cancel the current backup.  That will save some space.
Post back with details of what you did after the reinstall, and your results.

  • Can't enter time machine if switched off

I have been using TimeMachineEditor for years to get only backup a day. But, after finally moving my previous backup to my new time capsule, I find that I can't enter time machine unless it is turned on in system preferences. This never happened before and I'm wondering if anyone knows why. The editor only works (although it isn't working at all at the moment) if time machine is turned off.

Thanks for the reply and I'm thinking that you are right that Time Machine is just buggy. I do have the latest version of the editor and I don't think the editor is at fault. I just did a backup, I think, but when I enter Time Machine it goes into waiting mode which means it can't find the backup even though the Time Capsule is mounted on my desktop. When I try double clicking on the file in the finder, it tells me that Disk Image can't find the resource. Later it will likely work again.
I bought the Time Capsule because I was wary of using a third party networked drive any longer since it erased all my backups a month ago and started over. But it looks like Time Capsule is no better and may even be worse at the moment.
