Hello beafraser,
Here's an article to help troubleshoot when your iPod is detected but not identified.

Hope that helps.

Just bough 4th Generation iPod Shuffle from Amazon - comp;uter doesnt recognmise device, neither does iTunes. I have re-installed iTunes, re-started Computer but nothing seems to work. I have a 2nd generation iPod shuffle and that is recognised by computer. Anyone have any suggestions - I am at my wits end.
There is a USB printer connected to the back port of the PC. The mouse and keyboard are both PS/2.
I did attempt to reinstall the USB root drivers. After uninstalling iTunes and all the other apple software packages included, I uninstalled everything USB in Device Manager, then rebooted the PC to let Windows reinstall it all.
Reinstalling the OS -might- fix the issue, but if that were the case, it's most likely just a software conflict that can easily be fixed if I can manage to narrow the specific conflicts down. I've already essentially disabled everything with MSCONFIG except for Apple stuff, so I'm at a loss as to where to go. I've attempted the 5 Rs and all that as well, none of it seems to do the trick. I also cleared the temp folder multiple times (once per each iTunes uninstall / reinstall following the support site directions of uninstalling all the extra apple software) as well as attempted restarts of the Apple services.
One oddity I would like to point out is that if I attempt to restart the iPod service through services.msc, it will not restart. It throws the error message of "the service failed to respond in a timely fashion" or whatever. I instead have to use the windows Task Manager to manually kill the iPod process in the processes list.
I just now removed the USB printer and plugged the shuffle into the same port, but I receive the same error message in iTunes about the iPod being corrupted and it needing a restore. If I push restore, the software gets stuck in an endless loop. There are no other USB devices attached to this computer, the motherboard drivers are fully up to date from nVidia's website, and other USB devices clearly function just fine (USB memory sticks, USB printer, etc). If I use the Diagnostics option under Help in iTunes, it will claim there is no iPod connected, and, again, the iPod still does not show up in Windows Explorer under My Computer as an attached device, nor does it show up in Disk Management as a mounted partition. -
Everytime i connect my ipod touch to my laptop the message that either the backup was corrupt or not compatible with my ipod shows up. It was working before but idk why this is happening now!?

IPod Nano 6th Generation Volume Button Issue
The "-" volume button on my iPod Nano 6th generation is stuck in the "on" or depressed position against the case. It looks like the button either is binding against the case, or a spring-like mechanism beneath the button is broken.
Any ideas on how to fix the issue short of taking it in for a service appointment? Maybe by opening the case?
AIf you open it or have a 3rd party repair site work on it you will no longer be eligible for an out-of-warranty replacement from Apple at a price of $65/$75 (make a Genius Bar appointment before going.
You can buy the switch and replace it but be sure you are up to it. Check http://www.ifixit.com for teardown instructions. -

I just got Ipod Nano 6th generation which needs Itunes 10 to hook up. But I can't download Itunes 10 because I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. What do I do?
If you have an Intel Mac, purchase Mac OS X 10.6 on DVD.
If you have a G4 or G5, purchase Mac OS X 10.5 on DVD.
If you have a G3, purchase a newer computer.

How to remove an engraving from an iPod nano 6th generation?
Anyone has any idea how to remove the engraving from an iPod nano 6th generation?
You would have to grind it out but it is doubtful there is enough metal left for that without damaging the iPod.

My iPod Nano 6th generation fell one time and it kept working with a small crack in the screen. But after a while it just gave out and does not turn on.I try to charge it and all it does is blink the apple icon on and off. When disconnected nothing happens.
I am having the identical trouble as described above with my month old Macbook Air. I tried everything with the ditto results. Please help anyone!

My iPod Nano 6th Generation is not picking up album artwork. On several of my tracks, it recognizes the album art, but it doesn't seem to recognize the others. I've tried uploading the artwork onto several albums manually, I've cleared the downloaded artwork to download them again, I've even restored the iPod to its default settings...nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have a solution to thisTry:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on anoterh computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Hello I just found a problem with my Ipod nano 6th generation. It worked fine an hour ago but then the screen turned a dark grey. Did the restore through Itunes and then it went white. But now it's totally unresponsive and seems to be off even when it is plugged into itunes. Can't even restore it. I get Error 1415?
Hi clarity,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You may want to first try removing and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes by following the steps in this article:

I have tried restoring an Ipod Nano 6th Generation but it seems to keep looping back and saying it is in recovery and needs restoring, can anyone help?
Try doing a level reformat of the iPod's flash storage instead to see if that kills the restore loop using the instructions in the article below.

I cannot get scrabble to work on my ipod touch. It only works on my macbook. I've uploaded, deleted, reloaded and nothing seems to work. It asks for a password but will not let me in. Anyone else have this problem?
Hi BDAqua,
I can go to /System/Library/Frameworks/, but JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/JavaVM does not exist!
Hi Linc,
I have already downloaded that updater, and it says 'A newer version of this package is already installed' -
New update are listed on the app icon. When I click update all I'm prompted to enter password. When I do, the progress bars go away and nothing gets updated. Tried logging out, reset iPad, and nothing seems to work. Keeps asking me to enter password.
I've been having the same problem for days and just solved it. Tried going to Apple ID and had all the same problems you did in the second paragraph. I signed out with my current username on the ipad under settings--->store and signed back in with my oldest apple id and password. Now the apps don't ask for a password to upgrade. I too had a username that wasn't an email address and had to change to one that was at some point. That's what caused the problems. Hope this can work for you.

The screen on my iPod Nano (6th generation) has gone totally black. When I plug it in to my Mac, iTunes can see it. I've charged it for 3 hrs and tried restoring it via iTunes. Still no joy. Any suggestions?

IPod nano 6th generation. repeat is on, and I can't see a way to turn it off.
I have an iPod nano 6th generation. Shake to shuttle is turned on, though I can rarely get it to work. I can't find a repeat setting, but when I select shuffle, it always repeats. I can't find anything in the manual about how to turn repeat on or off. This behavior started a few weeks ago.
I reset all settings, and that seemed to clear it. I had to turn some back on. I still can't find anywhere to turn repeat off or on.
