When i try to update iPhoto, it says sign in to the account you used to purchase it
when i try to update iPhoto, it says sign in to the account you used to purchase it and does not update. what can i do?
Did you buy this machine used or "open box" by any chance?
The free iLife suite is tied to the AppStore now and copy protected, so if OS X was wiped off the drive and iLife reinstalled from AppStore, it's registered to the person owning the AppleID that installed it.
Even if the machine gets transfered to a new owner and had a copy of free iLife like other software Apple bundles with OS X, it can't be updated without the original AppleID.
Surprising Steve Jobs said that copy protection won't work when dealing with the music labels, but on the other hand copy protects everything on AppStore instead of by developer choice instead.
There is certainly a case for copy protection in certain cases, but no to the point it's on everything and becomes a problem for everyone.
Your solution to this problem is either use the original AppleID or delete iPhoto and purchase it from AppStore with your AppleID.
Your pictures are stored it the Pictures/iPhoto Library and will remain if you delete the program.
If you wish not to use iPhoto, and need to get your pictures out, right click on the iPhoto Library and "show package contents" ot get to the Origianls folder.
Good Luck

I have updates for iMovie and iPhoto but when I try to update them through App Store I'm told that "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." even though I bought it and it is on my iMac! Any suggestions on what I need to do?
Hi...
Delete both apps using this utility > Download AppCleaner for Mac - Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com
That will delete the apps and all associated files.
Then re download the apps. That will download the most recent version updates included.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. -
The App Store says I have updates for I-Photo and Garage Band. When I try to update I get the following message: You have updates available for other accounts To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." Both apps came with my computer and as far as I know I only have one Apple account. Any thoughts? Thanks.
KarenThanks for you reply. I'm 99% positive that I'm using the user id and password that I used to set up my computer. That's why I'm stumped. I read the solution someone else suggested (type your user name without @gmail and create a new password. When I tried it, I was asked for my birthday. It didn't recognize it. I know I got my birthday correct. Oh well...

is the garageband, iPhoto,iMovie update free, as I have purchase mac book pro last december, I am unable to update it from app store. When I try to do so it says "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it"
I have apple ID but after signing into that account too, it does't allow to update. None of the updates for these application are show in software update of late, but it flashes in the dock where app store is . Kindly suggest.Should be the account you registered your mac with, and/or the account you used during the setup assistant.

I am trying to update 'iPhoto' and am getting this....To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.
Dear Brother David,
You are way out of order and actually just wrong and seem to lack any empathy or understanding for users, let alone anything other than text book/google regurgitations.
I thank you for highlighting your illusions of granduer and for your wonderful, thoughful and intelligent insults.
I re- post a fix below that worked for me:
As a user and you may find this bug, you can either ring apple or try the below,
All my apps now appear in the purchases section of App store and iMovie also updated itself.
I have only one ID software is presinstalled and software was "not hidden" or even showing...I just got various error messages and ID errors.
It was not spotlight indexing either.
cheers

Re: App Store: says You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software - when it came with the computer!!

I had a similiar problem that I fixed doing this:
Close Mac App Store
Go into this folder
/Library/Application Support/App Store
Drag this file to the desktop
adoption.plist
Repen Mac App Store and log in
If it fixes your problem, great, if not, you can move the old adoption.plist file back"

I just sign in to my account (the oprevious one, with which I bought Pixelmator was hacked and I changed the Password)
Now,anityme I try to update Pixelmator (V. 2.1) the app store tells me "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
It simply does not work. Any hints?
Thanks for your help.It used to be that Spotlight had to create an index for the boot volume with the /Applications folder in order for the App Store Update option to work properly. I had a habit of disabling Spotlight for all volumes by adding disk volume names to the Do Not Index list under the Privacy tab in the Spotlight System Preferences panel, so App Store never let me update apps until I turned Spotlight back on. I turned it on until I was able to update the apps, then I'd turn it off again.
I'm currently faced with the same error message (Login with the account you used to buy the free package) but Spotlight is turned on. Apple really goes out of its way to not tell you what account you used to buy something. That's not supposed to be a big deal, I only have a couple accounts. But when I tried them all, App Store refused to let me update using ANY of them.
It's just Xcode. I can just delete the darn thing and buy it again (all 4 GB of it), but this is really annoying! -
I am being prompted to update iPhoto and iMovie, but getting the message: "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." These came already loaded on my laptop, and my email has not changed. Any ideas or work-arounds?
Has your Apple ID changed, that's the one that matters.
You need to sign in under the account that purchased these apps (did you buy this Mac new) -

Why doesn't my macbook pro let me update certain applications? It says "You have updates available for other accountsTo update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.
it's also likely that you used two different apple IDs to purchase apps. if that's the case then you simply have to log out of your app store, and log into the other account to update the apps.
from experience it's not possible to syncronise purchased content from two different accounts. but you can always give Apple a call. -

What's this app? You need to use another Apple ID to update it -
I attempted to update to Mavericks, but my MacBook Pro froze for more than an hour after the download. I restarted the computer, and now when I try to update, I get the message: "You have updates for other accounts. To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
I do have other accounts, but I get the same message no matter which App Store account I have signed into. How can I complete this update? To update the application, you have to sign in to the Apple ID that it was purchased under. If you purchased it with a friend's ID for example, you would need to sign in to their account so you can update the app.

To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it. - I get this message for a couple of the apps that were installed from original
Take a look at this .. .Troubleshooting the Mac App Store
You have to update an app using the same ID as was used when it was purchased. If a family member or friend downloaded the app originally, then you must use the same ID as they used.
