When I turn on my Macbook pro retina display, a black screen show up while I hear the normal start up sound.  I noticed that the machine gets very hot, any clue how to make it work?

If the Mac is too hot to touch, take it in for service.

I use Safari as my browser. When on a site and I click on a PDF file I get a black screen and a notice that "Adobe Reader blocked for this website". However, this does not happen if I use Firefox.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 3 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • My instant watch for netflixs is not working on my macbook pro. I just shows a black screen. I know that the problem is not Silverlight, so what other type of software or upgrades am I missing?

Go figure both Apple support and Netflixs support "have never seen a problem quite like mine" the same day my free trial has ended. And no the, problem is not with my Netflixs account because they charged my debit card just fine. I'm trying to play instant movies on my netflixs account and every time I click on a movie or show it just shows up a black screen with no play controls. According to Netflixs I'm either missing a peice of software or I need to uninstall and reinstall a program or plug-in or something. At first they thought it was Microsoft Silverlight, but I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling that several times and nothing has changed, plus since I had no play controls as well the problem is definetly not Silverlight. So I was wondering what other types of software or plug-ins are needed to play Netflixs movies or if anyones else has had the same issue and knew how to fix it. And I know that it is a problem with my Macbook Pro, because my netflixs accout still works on my sister's computers. I've tried restarting my computer, restarting Firefox, signing out and back in on Netflixs, praying to God, clearing my cookies and chache, saying nice things to my laptop, yelling at my laptop, and pretty much everything under the sun. Nothing I do is fixing it. Please someone help me figure this out.

MacBook Pro  / Mozilla Firefox / Netflix / Silverlight Update solved - DON'T DWNLOAD FROM NETFLIX
I solved this problem tonight. I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.8. I know, it's old. But I love my Netflix and I recently noticed that Firefox plays Netflix much better.  Then I suddenly got this message that I needed to download the latest Silverlight - it only takes 30 seconds! - WRONG.   However, after much searching, I finally did the steps in order and it worked.
This was after repeatedly downloading Silverlight from the Netflix site without success.  So here's what I did:
    1. Went to http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx
    2. Followed the directions. I felt like such an idiot for not doing it right before.
    3. Go to your hard drive and search for "Silverlight" to locate ANY existing Silverlight files: .dmg, etc.
[also check your Libary/ Internet Plug-ins, but the above search is faster]
    4. Drag it all to the trash and empty it.
    5. Go back to the Get  Silverlight page and click on the Install on that page, not the Netflix site.
    6. Note the steps for Safari or Mozilla Firefox - I wanted Firefox, so I follwed those instructions.
    7. Once it's installed, close all the browsers and Restart that bad boy. Right away.
    8. Open a browser, go to Netflix and proceed to joyfully rot your brain with Netflix content. Yay!

  • HT1338 How can I conserve battery life on my new macbook pro? I got it 2 weeks ago and am noticing that the battery depletes quickly. I dim the screen and keyboard backlight & mainly use Safari (multiple tabs).

    Appreciate any help!

My daughter also just bought a Mac Book Pro 13" with the same issue. When we migrated over from the old computer, we brought over only her documents, no applications, and she was getting only about a 2 hour battery life on the new MBP.  Somewhere in the MBP threads in this forum someone who was experiencing this same battery life problem said he was told by an Apple Genius in a retail store to try setting up a second user, and then to try working out of that user only. So we set up the second user, logged out of the old user,  and the battery life readout is now about six hours after a charge when my daughter is logged in as the new user. If she needs old documents or other files she can always log in as the old user to use them, but she rarely has to go back. Whenever  she is logged on as the old user the battery life shows under two hours, but when she she logs out and logs back in as the new user it jumps back up to around six hours.
There seems to be no need to eliminate the files etc. that reside under the old user. As long as my daughter is logged out as the old user and logged in as the new user, the battery life is much better. Weird solution, but it seems to be working. She is running Lion 10.7.4.
         Hope this helps.

  • After changing my new mac book pro retina display new one have black lines and patches all over my screen

i am regular user of apple products never face such kind of problem,my new macbook pro retina display first have white spot and lines on my display after claming they chnage my dispaly and its surprizing me when i saw new display it has all over black paches and lines i am really disappointed ,a product claim best display ever has such kind of problem ,i want soloution ,at least if they have problem they exchange me with regular display screen dont need retina,

This really isn't something that we can help with. We're just other Mac users like yourself, only we don't live in Pakistan. (None of the experts who participate here live in Pakistan, to my knowledge.)
This problem should be covered under warranty, but if there aren't any authorized Apple service providers in Pakistan, getting warranty service may not be easy. But I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to handle such a problem in Pakistan. You'll need to contact Apple. The number for Apple in Pakistan is listed here:

  • Although I turned off WiFi, set as 'require admin password to turn on and off wifi, when I turn on my MacBook Pro, retina latest model, just got for a month, it turns on wifi automatically, is this a back door or virus or security hole? Thank you

I have my all networks at 'Off' status in the system panel, never use Bluetooth either, also in the top status bar, and set as 'require admin password to turn on and off WiFi', but when I turn on my MacBookPro 15" retina newest model only one month old, it goes on to WiFi automatically by itself.
Is this a back door? Security hole?
The other day, I was taking a break for five minutes, when I came back, the Microsoft outlook is open for setting up an account, I never use outlook, it is there only because it comes with the office package. Also, iTunes was playing music, I don't use iTunes when I'm working. Both were not on before I left for the break.
    What is the problem?

  • MacBook Pro won't boot - stays on black screen and beeps every few seconds

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro has been having issues - when powered on wont boot past the white screen and more recently will just stay on black screen and beeps every 5 seconds. I had someone look at it and it seems apparently the motherboard is the problem
and either needs fixing or replacing. As I am traveling in Nicaragua the closest apple store is in Managua (capital). Would I be able to get the motherboard looked at and replaced if need be at this apple store? Also, does anyone know the approximate price for the motherboard to be replaced? Up until a few days ago the laptop was still turning on and working every now and then but now stays on black screen and beeps.
Any advice would be very helpful!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It means that your Mac's memory is damaged > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
First, replace the memory modules. You can buy more memory at OWC or Crucial. It can also be replace by a reseller.
If it doesn't work, the RAM slots are damaged, so your logic board has to be replaced. It costs more than a half of the price of your MacBook

  • My mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina display broke (cracked internally) just by cleaning it. Is the display really this sensitive?!

My mother was using my laptop and meant well by cleaning off her finger prints (which stick pretty well to this display) afterwards. A thumb was pressed against the lower left corner wiping a microfiber cloth back and forth, while resting the other four fingers on the back to prevent the display from swiveling backward. We filed a claim on her insurance, but an appraisal done by a so called "specialist" came to the conclusion that the damage could not have possibly been caused by the above described act. Oh yeah, and this diagnosis was made solely from 2-3 images of the screen itself.

  • TS3533 How can I shut down my PowerBook wiyh retina display in case of black screen and nonresponsive keyboard after sleep?

Installed OS 10.82 and EFI update and put the system to sleep. Trying to wake it again resulted in black screens and an irresponsive keyboard: there seems to be no way to shut the system down in this case. My solution was to unplug the machine and let it blow the fans and run "by itself" untill it after several hours shut down because of low battery charge. After plugging it in again, it would start on key board command and now works fine.
Question: Is emptying the battery really the only way shut the laptop down in this case?

All you should need to do is push and hold the on/off button for a few seconds. It should shut it down cold.
If it doesn't you may have a defective machine.

  • MacBook pro retina display is not turning on even though the computer is on.

My Mac book pro retina display has a solid black screen. I can hold the power button down to turn it on and off, but the screen never activates.

       Restart.
Press F2 key couple of times.
       Reset PRAM.   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761

  • Macbook Pro retina display makes a metallic spring noise.

I've only recently purchased my Macbook Pro 15" retina display and it's been perfect. Until the other day I noticed that when I touch the bottom of my Macbook, the area where it says "Macbook Pro" with other details, it makes a strange metallic noise. Kind of like a spring. I've made an appointment with a Genius at an Apple store next week, but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this before and what you done about it?
I know it's probably not a big issue, but when you pay over two grand for a laptop, you expect it to be pretty perfect.

So I went to my appointment the other day with a Genius, turns out her macbook pro retina display does the exact same thing. She realigned and cleaned out my laptop, but she said there is actually nothing they can do about it. It's the little springs and the only thing they could do is send it off and get new insides. And then it'll still probably happen.
So unfortunately, that's just how the retina display models are, she said a majority of them make that noise. She also said hers has gotten better with time.
It's quite disappointing when you pay over two grand for a laptop, and it's not 100% perfect. But I'm just going to have to forget about it, and stop placing it on my knees (when I hear it most), laptops shouldn't go on your lap anyway.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Display freezes

15" MacBook Pro Retina display has started to freeze, "flutter" and crash. After I power off, and try to power back on, there is a "beep" which sounds ominously similar to an "error" beep on a PC. Anyone else had this occur? MacBook is less than 9 months old.

I never had this issue until now. My laptop was working alright, but I noticed ghosting, then I realized that it was overheating and on rare occasions it would freeze. But I never got a white screen saying: Your computer restarted because of an error
neither did I before have this beeping and crashing. It all happened after they switched the motherboard..
I am in Israel, and when I took my laptop in to change the motherboard they said it would take them 10 working days. I can't go without a laptop for that long, I'm a student, and I use my laptop for work as well... Aren't they supposed to give me a replacement or something for that time? I don't understand how the think to take so much money for a computer then not even provide a replacement computer, especially for such a high-end, professional piece of equipment..

Unfortunately, that is not possible. The computer only can "output" your display image, it cannot "input" an image from an external computer and display it on your MacBook's retina display.
