I had a lot of tabs open and several applications as well. things really slowed up when I added El media player to the mix. finally computer froze completely and now can't get it to restart (stuck on grey screen) tried SMR plus PRAM procedures without success.
Hmm... try doing this:
1) Force your Mac to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for about 5 sec.
2) Start in Safe Mode. Press the power button to turn it on, and before you hear the Startup "Dummmmm" chime, hold down the Shift key. For a few sec, you won't see the Apple logo. Keep pressing the Shift key until you see it. If you press it after the Apple logo appears, start from Step 1 again.
3) This time, your Mac should take longer to boot. (Like a minute or 2 longer as it is going thru the necessary files to boot from, and not just everything like in Normal Startup mode; which caused it to hang)
4) Does your Mac boot sucessfully to the Login Screen or Desktop? The login Screen should show SAFE MODE in red at the top. The Desktop should have Sound disabled and seems a lot slower. If you see either of these, backup ALL your files (if you have not already done so) on to an External HDD. Create a new User Account in System Preferences>Accounts with about the same info as your current account (The name will have to be different though, if your previous account was John, this time, add your last name as in John Appleseed.) Make sure it is an Admin account. Then, login into the new account and delete your previous account. Copy all your files over to your new account and restart your Mac correctly by going to Apple Menu>Restart.
5) This time, don't press anything and let it boot normally. Does your Mac boot correctly? I hope that helps you a little. Get back to me if it does not work! -

Make sure the pins are correct for it. There is DVI-D as well so you need to double check that you are purchasing the correct one. -
Macbook Pro stuck on grey screen with Apple logo
Macbook Pro was purchased in mid-late 2009 and is running on OS X 10.6. Today is suddenly stopped responding and so I turned it off. When I turned it back on it opend to the grey screen with the Apple logo and the loading icon and that is where it stayed. I have been searching for the answer on different forums but have yet to find a solution. My hard drive is appearing in the Disk Utility but not in the box when I try to reinstall OS X. Any suggestions on what to do?

Unfortunately for that it's usually not a quick fix, unless it's a stuck firmware update.
Hold the power button down to force a hardware shutdown and boot again, if it appears again then it's a bigger problem.
The bigger problem is that the fsck drive repair at boot can't fix the problem with the drive.
You will need to consider your off machine backup situtation if you have one or not and how recently backed up are those files.
If you have no backups or desperatly need to get files off and willing to possibly spend some money to do so (a powered external drive + even $100 recovery software), then it depends upon your computer skill level. If not very good then your seeking the services of a local PC/Mac tech, Apple doesn't do data recovery.
Once you have a copy of your files off the machine, then your looking at a erase and reinstall of OS X, programs and files from backup.
If you have a recently updated TimeMachine you can restore from that.
If you have a bootable clone, then it's easy. Just hold option/alt key and boot from it, grab your files, erase the drive and reverse clone your problems away.

Thank youThe cable connections have (so far) solved this problem for my situation. Even though the monitor's DVI cable was firmly connected to the mini Display port connector, when I touched it the attached monitor would go 'blue' or lose its connection entirely. After disconnecting and reconnecting this junction the monitors would still take a hit on touching the connection. I also checked the connection of the mini Display port connection to the graphics board and could not push it in any further. However, after a second go-round I unplugged this connection to the board and reconnected it. I am certain it was fully inserted the first time. But, connection contacts can oxidize over time and sometimes it may just need to be disconnected and reconnected to 're-wipe' the connections. This effectively cleans them at the point of contact. So in my case I'm thinking it was the connection age that was an issue more than a 'loose' connection. Either way, I haven't had this issue for the past two weeks.

Usb not recognized when windows7 installed on mac book pro retina

I am trying to install windows 7 to mac book pro - retina display with mavericks.
I managed to come to the point where windows installed and starts and I need to install the boot camp on the windows. I am having problems at this stage. Windows does not recognize the usb drives and i cant install the boot camp or connect to the internet, nothing. I restarted the machine several times but still no luck.
When i open it in mac, i can access the usb drive. When switched back to windows there is no usb.
Can someone please advise?The USB thumb drive itself is either USB 2 or 3. It's a hardware thing. Not sure how to tell what type it is through a computer, but some usually the packaging indicates which it is. Sometimes the drive itself will have it written on it somewhere. You will need to delete the bootcamp partition in OSX using the bootcamp assistant and redo the entire process using a USB 2 thumb drive. After that the process worked as indicated in the boot camp instructions. The bootcamp drivers were automatically installed after windows rebooted itself.
I am not 100% sure that this was the issue, but when I went from using a thumb that I knew was usb 3 to one that I was sure was not, it all of a sudden worked. It could have also been that it just did not like the usb 3 drive I tried to use the first few times as it was a generic drive from Microcenter. -

If you want to set which OS your system boots into (provided Windows is installed using BootCamp and not a virtualization option such as Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox), just hold the "Option" key down when you turn your computer on. Continue to hold the key down until you see the options for booting into the OS of your choice. Just click on the arrow under the one you wish (tap to click won't work here if you have it enabled... you'll need to physically click the trackpad). If you want to change which OS your system normally boots into, just go into System Preferences in OS X and select "Starup Disk". Whichever OS you select here will be the OS your system will automatically boot into.

Restore from the backup you had prior to installing Mavericks.
However, the upgrade should not have altered your partition scheme. Did your erase and format the drive prior to upgrading? -
