Where are Automator workflows in Snow Leopard?
I have created a number of workflows in Leopard, and the ones I created for Finder were always available via contectual menus (right click on file).
I cannot get how to use them in Snow Leopard. The ones I moved over don't show up at all.
Thanks, Linc... for some reason, i can only Save As... Workflow or Application. Services is not available.
I am able to open the workflow. I receive a warning that itmes may have changed... Then when I Save As... I only see the 2 choices. Saving as an Application does save a drag-n-drop App... and it works correctly, but I used to really like/depnd on the contectual menu availability.
Hmmm....

Where are my folders from snow leopard mail now that I've converted to lion?
I had an extensive folder structure in mail before the upgrade. I can't find it now. What should I do? Please help.
Straus,
There is a small button with SHOW written next to it in the upper left corner of the Mail app. Right below the icon bar. Voila, it will re-appear.
I went through the same panic!

What Are Application Keywords in Snow Leopard?
I recently updated to Snow Leopard, and I've been trying out the expanded syntax coloring. However, I cannot find one example of code colored as an application keyword.
I set the color for application keywords to bright red so it would stand out. I have hundreds of AppleScripts to test, and I have opened about half of them. Not once was any code colored as an application keyword. There were classes, properties, enumerations, parameters, commands, etc., but no application keywords.
So, what are application keywords in Snow Leopard? I thought I knew, but now I have no idea.
Any ideas?
Thanks
BrettThanks for the info. The 10.6 changes documentation says:
*Syntax coloring for scripts now has much more detail: commands, parameters, classes, properties, and enumerated values all have their own category now, instead of sharing the “application keywords” category, and may be formatted differently depending on whether they come from an application or a scripting addition.*
Does that mean all application keywords are now in different categories? If so, why is there an application keywords option in the syntax coloring prefs?
Thanks

Leopard TM backups are NOT compatible with Snow Leopard
I just discovered while upgrading to Snow Leopard that Time Machine backups made in Leopard are not compatible with Snow Leopard at this time. So, for those of you who are considering upgrading to Snow Leopard using your TM backups to restore your data, the TM backup will not be recognised by Snow Leopard.
I called Apple Care to check this when I went to restore my data as I had done an Erase and Install, and they confirmed that I would have to either:
a) use the data on my TM drive as any other data only backup, or
b) re-inslall Leopard, restore the TM backup, then upgrade to Snow Leopard rather than erase and install.
For infoScott in MD wrote:
Incidentally, yes, the "package" file is the in.Progress file. It seems to have the incremental updates, since it's a real big file, and has very recent entries. Again the last set of timestamped folders (i.e. a full backup) was over a year ago.
No, something's very wrong. All (completed) TM backups are the same.
Inside the Backups.backupdb folder should be a single folder with your computer name; inside that should be a series of folders with the date & time of each remaining backup, plus the Latest folder which is an alias to the most recent of the date & time folders, except an "in.Progress" folder.
The "in.Progress" folder is an incomplete (failed or cancelled) backup, and is ignored in all TM displays, since it's unusable.
In any event I have not deleted or changed any of the files. Also the stuff in the "Latest" folder is over a year old. But I've had TM running the whole time.
So does that mean (I'm hoping) that my recent stuff will be recovered from the inProgress file if I can ever get this working? Or does it mean I'm screwed anyways, because the best I can get is the files from the Latest or most recent timestamped folder (again, both a year back).
First, run +*Repair Disk+* again (and again) until it either fixes all the errors or can't fix any more. If it can't fix any more, it's barely possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party app such as +DiskWarrior 4.2+ can (it's about $100).
Let's see if DU can fix it on a second pass. Hopefully it will, and the problem was preventing the more recent backups from appearing. -
Automator errors under Snow Leopard
Hi everyone,
Since upgrading my MacBook to Snow Leopard (I have the latest 10.6.3 update), Automator behaves very erratically. The window ‘AppleScript Error; The result of a numeric operation was too large. (-2702)’ pops up frequently at various stages of opening, using, or modifying my workflows previously created under Leopard.
I still get this erratic behavior even if I try to remake my workflows from scratch in Snow Leopard. Even stranger is that I can get a workflow to behave fine for a little while, and then it starts getting crazy again. Some Automator actions (Rename Finder item, Get Specified URLs, Run Applescript) seem to be especially prone to triggering the error.
This problem is general and very annoying, and I was thus surprised to find very few threads about this issue when I searched the Apple forums (assuming I searched correctly) or using Google.
Because of this issue, I have refrained from upgrading my Mac Pro to Snow Leopard, while waiting for future updates to hopefully fix the problem (which hasn’t happened so far).
Did anyone else encounter this problem, and if so, how do you solve it?
Any hint would be much appreciated.I was loosing hope for a solution. But running Automator in 32-bit mode does work! Thank you Lupus42.
Now I can dare to install Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro. But because of this Automator error story, I’m still anxious about making the transition. So I’ll seek the safest way to try Snow Leopard. I know I can reinstall Leopard if Snow Leopard still causes me trouble, but I’d prefer not to mess with my current system at all. I’ve heard you can upgrade a disk image of your system instead, or create a new partition on your disk. I don’t know if these options are actually feasible and better, but I’d to explore these alternatives before altering my current system. Maybe I’ll start a new thread about this if needed.
Thanks everyone for sharing your similar problems (and showing me I wasn’t crazy) and your solution to the problem. -
HT3258 where can I buy/ download Snow Leopard OS for my Macbook Pro so I can run PowerPC?
I need help.
where can I get/ buy/ download snow leopard os so I can run PowerPC..If you are outside of the USA & Canada, the Apple Store will not ship you Snow Leopard Server. You must have someone in the USA or Canada purchase it for you and then trans-ship it to you, which, of course, will increase the shipping costs.
Snow Leopard Server for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping costs at 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only).
Another alternative is to purchase Snow Leopard client and install that into Parallels 8:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
This will give you an environment where you can run your PowerPC CDs. -
Where are Automator Actions stored?
I want to use an Automator action on other computers and send it to a friend, but there is no Export option. Does anyone know where an action that I created is stored?? I checked in system and user Library folders, but only found the built-in actions. I also don't see anything showing up in Application Support folders.
Automator actions, like Service workflows, are stored in specific locations. Since you can store your other workflows pretty much anywhere you want, you can "Open an Existing Workflow..." of the desired type (it may also be in the list of recent items) or search using the Finder/Spotlight like any other file item. Right-clicking the workflow name at the top of the Automator workflow window will also show you a path popup to remind you where it was put.

What (and where) is .dat0283.000 in Snow Leopard?
My MacBook Pro (5,1--late 2008; 15") running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.8) has been very slow lately so I ran a program called EtreCheck. What it reports (among other things) is that .dat0283.000 and .dat03c4.000 are invalid. I used Spotlight to search for the first one, but it couldn't find it. I then searched the Internet (using both google and duckduckgo) but had no luck there either. Now I need help from the Apple Community. Are either of those, or both, the cause of the slowdown (or perhaps .swp, which is also listed as invalid)? If so, how would I delete them? Even Safari won't open messages!
"net.infinite-labs.SIMBLEnablerForSandboxedApps.plist" is listed as "failed" and there's a message 'Time Machine information requires OS X 10.7 "Lion" or later" which doesn't bother me as much. I use SuperDuper for backups.
Would greatly appreciate some help! Especially as I need to see messages in Safari, not having an ISP e-mail. The person who owns the place I live in is using that one.Thank you. Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to this, I had other, non-computer, things to tend to. Here it is:

I hope this helps someone help me. -
i am based in dubai, i ask the service support here but they dont have upgrade snow leopard they said have only the soft copy if i want to upgrade my mac i have to give my mac to and do the job. But i want to do it by myself and upgrade it by myself, they i said i need to purchased the retail snow leopard instead of upgrade which is cheaper than the retail box. Is there any way to purchased or download the upgrade then get the lion updates????
Please help~!~Hi m,
I don't know what you have available to you where you are, but the $29 SL upgrade (note that you do not need the much more expensive set with iLife, unless you want the newer iLife apps) is widely available in places that sell Macs/parts/accessories. I don't know who will ship to where you are, but lots of online places have it, like Amazon.
Once you receive that, backup and run the upgrade and updates and backup you're ready to purchase and download the Lion upgrade from the App Store. -
Automator error and Snow Leopard
In Snow Leopard's Automator, I'm getting an error that says my Automator actions are not Universal, which is incorrect, since they are certainly Universal Binaries.
However, after doing some research, I've found other similar cases, and it seems that this error is misguiding, and that the Automator actions just have not been compiled to be 64-bit yet. From my quick glance in Xcode, however, if I want to make a 32/64-bit UB Action, it is only compatible with Mac OS 10.5 and above. Am I wrong in my assumption? Might it be possible to build appropriate versions of the Automator actions that will work with Mac OS 10.4 through 10.6?My concern is how feasible is it to get a 32+64-bit and PPC/Intel hybrid Automator Action that can run on Mac OS 10.4 - 10.6.
Apple has this to say about that...
-=-=-=-
Automator Actions as Universal Binaries
A universal binary is executable code that can run on either PowerPC-based or Intel-based Macintosh computers.
To move a PowerPC-only project to a universal-binary project may require work involving such programming details as endianness, alignment, and calling conventions. The amount of work generally depends on the level of the source code; lower-level source code (for example, the kernel) requires more work than higher-level code (for example, an application based on Carbon).
The need to make an Automator action a universal binary depends on the language used:
■ AppleScript actions are platform-independent and do not require any changes to run on Intel processors.
■ An action that contains Objective-C code, whether a Cocoa-only action or an action that contains a mix of Objective-C and AppleScript, must be built as a universal binary to run correctly on both Intel and PowerPC processors.
For information on making universal binaries, see 'Universal Binary Programming Guidelines, Second Edition'. -
Automator category for Snow Leopard?
There doesn't appear to be an Automator section under the Snow Leopard discussion board. Am I missing something, or has it been moved elsewhere?
I'll check under the general developer's list. I found that some of my Automator actions are getting an "This is not Universal" in Snow Leopard, which is not correct, since they are certainly Universal Builds! However, I found the same issue on a forum for Pixelmator, and it sounds like that the Automator actions just haven't been compiled to have a 64-bit version.
However, this might only be available for Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6, supposedly? -
What external hard drives are compatible w/ lion, snow leopard and time machine?
I am looking to buy an external hard drive to back up all data on my Macbook Pro that is currently running Snow Leopard, then upgrading to Lion. I want an external hard drive that is compatible with BOTH Snow Leopard (for use of creating a backup prior to my upgrade) and Lion (for daily use once I've upgraded). I also don't want to spend more than $100 if possible. Any suggestions? Thanks!
There is currently a shortage of drives due to flooding in one of the countries in which they are manufactured.
Getting one for under $100 at this point might be difficult. You didn't mention how full your current hard drive is, but for Time Machine, you should plan on two to three times the data you currently have (or expect to have).
I looked through Newegg's selection and didn't see more than a couple 1TB drives for less than $100. I recently bought a 3TB drive for $150. They're in the $200-$300 range, now.
I always buy bare drives and put them in an enclosure I buy separately. All the name-brand, ready-to-use drives come with a bunch of software you don't need and some of their software causes problems.
I had some bad luck/bad customer service with Seagate, so I've been buying Western Digital. Though, my replacement drives from Seagate have been going fine.
I've used Icy Dock and MacAlly enclosures. Both have worked well. If you do decide to go that route, you must make sure the enclosure can support the size of drive you buy (both physical--2.5" or 3.5", and storage size--1TB, 2TB, 3TB). The controllers in the cases may not be able to handle a 3TB drive, for example.
No matter how you go, you have to decide what kind of interface you want to use. USB is cheaper, but Firewire is faster. Firewire 800 is even faster, but costs more. All of that depends on what ports you have on the computer. OS X doesn't currently support USB 3. -
What are some advantages of Snow Leopard over Tiger?
Is it worth my time to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard? I use my computer primarily for word processing and movie editing.

Well you likely have 10.5 Leopard, as per your signature says.
Tiger was 10.4
Download the free MacTracker to find your machine and the latest operating system it can handle.
http://www.mactracker.ca/downloads/Mactracker_6.1.zip
If you really do have Tiger 10.4 (look under the Apple menu), then download from this link instead.
http://www.mactracker.ca/downloads/Mactracker_5.3.zip
You need a Intel based processor for Snow Leopard, and it strips out a lot of the PPC code you are not using and also has faster video drivers, so you'll see a performance increase. Most all the Leopard programs (universal binaries) should work in Snow Leopard because not a lot was changed.
Lion is a another problem, save that for your next hardware upgrade. It's a real problem case. -
Where can I purchase a Snow Leopard upgrade?
I am sure I'm not the only one in this position: I have a relative who has a macbook which is still running 10.5.8, but it is new enough to be able to run Mountain Lion. She has decided she would now like to upgrade, but it would appear that Apple has pulled Snow Leopard from all their online stores. She lives in rural Nova Scotia - the nearest Applestore is in Montreal (about 15 hours' drive...), and in any case I have little hope that there would be an upgrade box still sitting on the shelves there.
How can I proceed? The box exists on amazon.ca, but it's the full version, for an exorbitant price. Has Apple not thought of providing us with an easier upgrade path than searching for a 10.6 box, and then paying for the ML upgrade? You can get the full install of Snow Leopard on ebay, just make sure it is not machine specific. Here's one:
brand new and sealed Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 single user | eBay
You should do a full backup before you procede to Lion or Mountain Lion in case you don't like it or decide you don't want it.
In my experience I found Lion nearly unusable and I went back to Snow Leopard by buying a 2010 referb with SL so I could get some work done. I still have Lion on my MBP and after a year it is still giving me beachballs, crashes, dropped wireless and various other problems. I had none of this with SL and my workflow was efficient. If you use SL for a while and get the feel of it you will have a better comparison if you move on to Lion or ML. There is a substatial change between 10.5.8 and 10.6.8, and Lion is a whole different critter. -
I have been searching through the apple store to upgrade my current os - 10.5.8? To upgrade to lion, it appears I need to have snow leopard 10.6. However, I cannot find the upgrade in the apple store.
Start by checking if you cn run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs. You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
