Where has my disc space gone? ...is my Mail inbox really 25 GB?
It seemed to me that my disc was a bit full so I deleted a couple of movies and freed up 9 GB. A couple of days later, after doing a bit of word processing, I got a disc full message.
Impossible, I thought.
I did an audit of my space. Visible folders, such as users, system, library etc., accounted for 68 of the 75 GB on the disc.
Question 1: where is the other 8 GB?
Now for the real problem: During this audit I noticed that my IMAP inbox was 25 GB (located at "user:Library:Mail:mailboxes:inbox). I am guessing that this is how the 9 GB got used in two days.
No way do the messages account for 25 GB. My estimate would be 1 GB including attachments.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hopefully this is not a bad sign. Check the hard disk for errors and run the Apple Hardware Test.
Boot from your install disc and check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. *Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If the startup disk appears to be ok, run the Apple Hardware Test

Where has my harddrive space gone?
I will soon be getting a new MacBook with a solid state harddrive. It will likely be smaller than the 500GB drive I use now, so I am calculating what size I need. I can do without some of my own files (under "Users"), but I imagine I need everything else. However, the math just isn't adding up. My folders on the HD are as follows:
apps 12.8 GB
library 12.47 GB
system 4.45 GB
total non-user files = 29.72 GB
My "users" folder is 236.39 GB
grand total = 266.11 GB used.
However, under "info" after ctrl-clicking the HD, it says I am using 406.75 GB! (unused = 58.69, capacity = 465.44.)
What am I missing? Is this missing data hidden but essential and needing to be factored in to my new HD?Check your hard drive space again using one of the following...

Where has all my space gone????
I currently am running Jaguar on my ibook 800 G3. Recently I noticed that I have aprox. 7 gigs left on my 30gig hard drive. I have been cleaning out all the programs that I once used in college but no longer need. What I thought I would be left with was a little more than this. After leaving only OS X Jag, 1700 songs in iTunes,100 photos in iPhoto, Microsoft Office,AIM,Safari,Internet Explorer, and Netscape.I only have 7 gigs left? How much space does Jaguar take up on the hard drive?? Maybe it's right on par but it feels like it's filled up an awful lot for these basic apps.

Jaguar in no way consumes the 23gigs of space on your 30gig HD. You have a right to be concerned. In order to find what is consuming your 23gigs of HD space you must approach the task methodically.
Have you tried the DIX program? This may quickly alert you to large chunks of HD space you never ever dreamed of existing. If this is the case you could have a quick soln to what's hogging you HD space.
If the mysterious space is occupied by large chunks (ie large files) it will be easy but if all this mysterious space is made up from many hundreds of small files the task will be a lot more difficult - and especially if these files aren't owned by your account. This is where Pseudo becomes useful. Using Pseudo with DIX will allow you to see ALL files on your HD. Have you tried DIX and Pseudo ?
As far as how much space does Jaguar take is a good one. My wife's iBook 10gig HD 500MHz system runs 10.3.9 and the three main folders containing the system occupies some 4.5gig. The 10gig HD has at best some 9.5gig available for use. So this leaves my wife 5gig for her data. Her home folder is about 1.5gig in size.
Do a File->Get Info on your Home folder to see what its size is. Add this to say 5gig and that should tell you something. If it doesn't add to 23gig then you have data that lays elsewhere. DIX/Pseudo should help you discover where this data is.
Is your Trash empty ?
Use Terminal.app and look into /var/tmp and /private/tmp for old files (created many months ago).
Do you allow the system to run the "cleanup" tasks such as daily, weekly and monthly ? Typically the system needs to be awake at around 3am each day for these tasks to run. Not sure about the 3am anymore as this was some time ago when I reseached this.
Another place to look although these files are in your Home folder but look into
~/Library/Caches for Mail and Safari - there will be lots and lots.
If you have Mac OS Classic laying about and you don't use it then get rid of it.
If you have Garageband and don't use it then get rid of it as it is enormous in size.
I'll post back with more ideas for you later. -

Ive recently had a replacement Iphone for the one that I had lost. My old phone had over 900 songs on it and about 70 apps and i still had around a gb free. Since ive had my new phone ive backed it up from Icloud and lost a lot of space. I only have 279 songs on it and 53 apps and i have no space left. Im confused. I have an 8gb Iphone 4 which runs version 5.1.1. Where has all my storage gone and how do i get it back.You should have 13 GB available after the iOS and the Apple Apps ...The rest is yours to fill. If you connect to iTunes you will see a graphical representation of how your iPhone's storage is currently consumed. Also you could Reset the phone and check the available space again. Hold Sleep / Wake button down and the Home key at the same time until the Apple logo appears, then release the buttons and wait until the Reset brings you back to the lock-screen.

If you have it turned on it is now under the music section on the top where you have Songs, Albums etc. It is on the far right next to Match.
If you cannot see it then Preferences and Tick Radio Option

If you have "INSUFFICIENT" disk space, then you can try and change the install location while performing the installation of the desired product. I am not sure when the error message would pop up saying that the disk space is "INEFFICIENT". Could you please share a screen shot of the error message along with the system information.

Where has the preview panel gone is Bridge CS5?
Today when I opened up Bridge, the preview panel on the right hand side has disappeared. It shows as being selected when I go to the Window Menu but it isn't there. The scroll bar is also missing so I can't view all of the thumbnails. Does anyone have any ideas about why this has happened and how I can return it to it's normal format? Thanks, Michelle.

No, but you can choose Reset Workspace from the workspace menu to get it back to normal.

bit of a pain as i used it quite ofteniTunes 7 is pretty smart overall, nevertheless I have a few serious gripes with the interface. Firstly the little 'snowflake' icon on the bottom right that switches on the visuals has been replaced by the browse and burn icons. Was there a problem with the previous layout? My wife and I use that button everytime we turn on the visuals on our Mac Mini sound system in the living room. It was super convenient because you could move in a single mouse sweep from selecting a playlist to switching on visuals. With iTunes 7 you have to either select from the pop-down menu or switch to the keyboard and press cmd+T. It might not seem such a big deal to some but it's definitely a backwards step, no matter how small.
The album art selector/display is very cool and niftily programmed however I'll never use it. The reason? Because if you fill it with album artwork, all those images are displayed over the visualiser at the start of each tune, which I HATE. I don't want sleeve designs ruining the beauty of G-Force which I paid good money to see. It's bad enough having the track info show when I already know what's playing! iTunes 7 is simply not configurable enough if you ask me, and hey, you shouldn't have to start configuring Fkeys to make up for the fundemental lack of choice in the program preferences.
I have a pal who loves the gapless playback in the new iTunes 7 because it's great for mix cds. Well maybe that's the best playback feature of iTunes 7 but I'm afraid it doesn't make up for the loss of the visualiser button, so there!

Why does a 128gb I-pad Air 2 only show 113gb in the capacity section of settings? Where has my other 15gb gone. Surely not on the OS. (It shows 111gb available which is the apps I have downloaded already)
Along with what Skydiver119 has already told you, my 64GB iPad 3 only had 57GB of available storage out of the box, so if you keep doubling the amount of already used storage on the device as you go from 16 to 32 to 64 and then to 128GB - I assume that the figure that you see is correct. The iOS and preinstalled apps account for the storage that seems to be "missing" to you on your iPad.
The amount that you see in Settings>General>About>Capacity is in fact, the available storage capacity for your iPad. You can't change it. It is whatever it says it is in that setting. -

I have just moved to South Africa with a new Touch so I've been a bit preoccupied recently. I have now realised that iTunes opens in the Apps Store and I can't find my way to the music store

Music, movie and video content in the iTunes Store will come to other countries if and when Apple can work out all the multitude of licensing, copyright and royalty issues with all the various entities that hold the distribution rights in your country, along with any legal and infrastructure issues that might arise.
