Where is 'file sharing'?

I've got an iPhone 4, with iOS 4.0.1. When connected via iTunes, I click on my phone, then on Apps to find file sharing, but file sharing just isn't there. Am I missing something?

File Sharing lets you transfer files between your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and your computer. You can share files created with a compatible application and saved in a supported format.
Applications that support file sharing appear in the File Sharing Apps list in iTunes. For each application, the Files list shows the documents that are on iPod touch. See the application’s documentation for how it shares files; not all applications support this feature.
When you have installed an app that supports file sharing, the file sharing section will appear in your iTunes apps tab as shown here:
The instructions for using file sharing are on page 60 of iPhone iOS4 User Guide

  • Where is file sharing in iTunes 12?

Where is file sharing in iTunes 12? I used to click on the iPhone or iPad device, then select the 'apps' tab and then file sharing apps like VLC would show at the bottom. Now clicking on the device doesn't do anything.

OK, I found it. In the upper left under the menu bar are some icons. Click on the iPhone icon, then select your device, iPad, iPhone, whatever. In the far left column that appears under your device, select apps. Then you'll see apps to the right of that column. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll find the file sharing apps.

  • Kobo APP download Docs, PDF's Kobo said to convert the PDF using Adobe Digital Editions, then I'd be able to upload to the Kobe APP via iTunes. Where is File Sharing under the Apps tab located?

I've uploaded my PDF to Adobe Digital Editions, but can't find where on iTunes to select file sharing under the Apps Tab... as specified in the instructions in the Kobo APP for the iPhone... and a rep from Kobo told me it was possible.

For future questions, this forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with an issue if you ask in the general iTunes forums.

  • Where is File Sharing in iTunes?

Have not been able to find an answer for this. I transferred a file from iMovie on the iPod to the computer and it said "Your project will appear in the File Sharing section of iTunes." Cannot find the File Sharing section anywhere on the menu. iMovie on the iPod says the movie was transferred but I can't find it in iTunes. Can't find it using Finder either. I found 3 others who had the same problem but no answer.

It's not in the main menu and not very intuitive, but, get the device you were running iMovie on connected to iTunes so it displays in the "Devices" list.
Select the device so the main panel shows its details.
Click the "Apps" header on the devices details
wait an eternity while it loads
scroll down to the File Sharing section
    Click iMovie
You should see your project on the right
iTunes is the slowest app on my computer by the way.<edited by host>

  • Not just another file sharing thread......

Running a forum search gives me a plethora of file sharing threads. Most of these threads are a one answer type of question or a simple "Preferences>Sharing>File Sharing type of answer. I am no expert here, I learn something every time I visit, but I know the basics of file sharing after nearly 20 years of using macs. I have a network set up at my business and home that the computers share and am perfectly comfortable with the basics. I would really like a discussion about more creative options available to expand what I am currently using.
We have four macbook pros here. Two are personal only and the other two are business/personal. The two business MBP's are the ones we use the most, they are the primary machines which go from work to home. Right now they share files but up until now have really been set up for their own workstations for 2 different jobs. Now, we are starting to blend a little bit more of our work and we have had the need to share more files with the 2 computers. It's gotten to a point where basic file sharing isn't enough. The problem I am having is that both computers aren't always within airport range of each other, and both computers aren't always on or awake. So, it's become annoying to have to make sure the machine with the files I need is awake and nearby. So, we have recently started using dropbox to share files that way. The only issue with that is that many of our files are sensitive in nature and security is a bit of a risk. So, I am encrypting volumes with PGP and sharing the encrypted volumes via dropbox. So far it's not been an issue with having the same files open at the same time on both computers to avoid conflicts, I think we'll be ok for awhile. But as this data collection grows, I think it will become impractical. The thing I really like about using dropbox is that both computers don't need to be running at the same time since the files are stored locally and the changes are synced online. Even if I am traveling with one computer, I will usually have an internet connection so the files will update on my partner's computer when I make changes. This is the ultimate in portability and syncing. But like I said, it may become impractical when we put 30-40 Gigs of data up and we can't so easily keep track of what's open on which computer.
So, I would like to know what others do at work or home to share necessary files between multiple computers, other than typical OS X file sharing techniques. I know some applications have a checkout type of feature which might help for certain types of files, but I really want a simple universal setup that my partners and employees can learn without having to think about what type of file they are working with. I have quite a bit of server space I can use for storage of files online if it would help, but syncing would be an issue.
Dropbox may just be the best option for me to share and sync from multiple locations. It makes sense! I just hope some users here have some other recommendations that might work!

    Allan Eckert wrote:
As to the PGP questions, as long as you have a file from the DropBox attached and are doing updates they are being sent to the copy on the DropBox. The updates are not all held until you unmount it.
Actually, I'm seeing otherwise. I just ran a test to be sure. I held a pgp disk open for about 5 minutes while copying files to and removing from it. I watched the dropbox folder and the upload activity the whole time and saw no activity or change. The moment I ejected the volume, network activity jumped up and the folder icon in my dropbox turned from synced to syncing in progress. It actually seems to work quite well. The problem I have with it is that if I need to use large files, it will take a long time to upload, because doesn't the whole encrypted volume need to be uploaded again for any minor changes? I haven't tested anything larger than about 20MB, so it's hard to tell.
The drop copy application might actually be quite useful if I were running a file server. I would certainly need an easy to use interface for the actual sharing of the files. If I do go that route, I would prefer for the ability to be able to lock files. As Allan said, drop copy doesn't have that feature, unfortunately.
So, there really isn't a well known solution for this type of application, huh? I may just have to reorganize my plan and stick to removable media for the shared data. If there is only one copy, it can't get mixed up. The only issue I have is when I'm not on premises, how do I share the data with the office? I suppose I will just have to have a better handle on what I need and make sure to have it with me and use dropbox or ftp to upload the files back and forth from office to user.
I just did a test with a decent size PGP virtual disk (125MB) I added one small 3MB jpg file to it and it did an incremental update to sync the file very quickly. I don't know how it's able to do it, but it's doing it. I would have thought it would have to update the whole disk every time, but I guess not. Maybe PGP and dropbox is a better solution that I ever imagined it to be.

  • File Sharing Configuration

Does anyone know where the file sharing settings in System Preferences are stored? I work with an iMac that has 4 standard accounts and 1 administrator account with File Vault, and somebody removed 2 of the standard account's public folders from the shared folder list. File sharing is really important for us, but when I try to manually add them again it just adds Public and Public-1 instead of User 3's Public Folder and User 4's Public Folder. I've tried renaming and editing the files under "/private/var/samba/shares" but the changes don't take even following restarting the service and a reboot and are eventually reversed and the files renamed back to public and public-1.

Did you bother reading the error? "You should start smbd/nmbd/winbindd instead for domain member and standalone file server tasks" is pretty clear.

  • Where is the file sharing section located in iTunes 12?

I am trying to open up an iMovie Project that I sent to iTunes from my iPhone 4s. After the project exported my phone said "Send to iTunes Complete. Your project will appear in the File Sharing section of iTunes as: Horror short." But, I can't find the file sharing section anywhere on iTunes 12! I searched in the help section and it gave me this iTunes 12 for Mac: Transfer files between your computer and an app on your device But the last few steps are impossible to do, because the file sharing button does not exist! Please help me! I'm losing my mind. I made a short film and I just want to get it on my MacBook Air.

did you not have an answer to this yet? its march now. whats that all about? I have the same problem, did you sort it out yourself?

  • Where is the iPad App file sharing in the new itunes?

I exported a file from ArtRage App. One is supposed to go to iPad Tab, then Apps Section, and scroll to the bottom and find the file. But I just updated to the new iTunes and I don't see a way get the file anywhere within it. What should I do to get the file in the New itunes? the only help information I can find is from the last version. ...I should not have updated...
    Thank you.

With iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC. Then select the iPad on that left-hand sidebar, and on the right-hand side of iTunes select the Apps tab and scroll down it, and you should see the file sharing section - select that app on the left-hand side of that section

  • Where is the Garageband file sharing area in iTunes?

I am trying to import some loops that I've made using FunkBox on my iPad which I have then uploaded to my Mac, I now want to import it back into my GarageBand on the iPad. In the Help section of GarageBand it says to add the files to the Garageband file sharing area in iTunes, but I can't find it. Any clues/ I'm flummoxed & just a little frustrated!

You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
Cmd-B to turn on the menu bar. (Ctrl on Windows)
Cmd-S to turn on the sidebar.
Cmd-/ to tunn on the status bar.
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the previous search behaviour.
You can also open the menu bar temporarily by pressing Alt (Windows, not sure of the Mac equivalent).

  • Airport Extreme is allowing access to screen sharing, file sharing from external IP addresses (some from China, Canada etc)

How to get control over the ports/port forwarding etc in Airport Extreme?
How to make AE drop packets to certain ports from external ports.  Or create whitelist/blacklists?
I figured out where the MAC filtering is!  (It is inside the Timed Access Control).  I wish it had a list of connected device and allowed me to select, name and add them.
I am getting requests from Chinese IP to the screen sharing ports forwarded to my iMac.  Had requests to other ports as well.  There was one IP address from CANADA too.
I want to open file sharing for local use only.

Why is Airport Extreme forwarding requests for screen sharing from external ip addresses to my imac?  I don't have a public address, nor use dynamic dns service, and I have removed the server app (at least I think I have, but Apple Store doesn't think so).
