Where is Filter Extract in CS4

I just upgraded to CS4 all the way from Photoshop 7.0 and am working through a tutorial that tells me to go to Filer>Extract to do a selection. That doesn't seem to be where the command is in CS4. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you know of an online resource that would be a quick reference for similar issues I'm sure will come up.

CS4 Where is Filter/Extract?

I know I used it in CS3 and the CS4 help says to go to Filter/Extract but it doesn't exist on my Filter Menu (using all Menu Items) and it is a 8bit RGB photo I'm trying to work on.
It's probably me but...
Oh. just realized it's an "optional" filter so I'll go find it (I hope). Is it optional because there something truly better?

They just put it in the shed while they think up something better.
You can install it, but it's still as clunky as it ever was.

Photoshop CS5 can be run as a 64-bit application on Mac OS, 10.5.7 and higher. Because of the changes that were made to the application, some plug-ins are not available when you run Photoshop CS5 either as a 32-bit or a 64-bit application. To work with these plug-ins, run Photoshop CS5 as a 32-bit application, then when you are done using these plug-ins, return to working in Photoshop CS5 as a 64-bit application.
If you copy old plug-ins from previous versions of Photoshop, or third-party plug-ins that are not compatible with Photoshop CS5, into Photoshop CS5's Plug-in folder, you may see different problems, such as errors or crashes.
If you have set the Additional Plug-Ins Folder in the Plug-Ins preferences to a folder, deselect this option, or make sure all the plug-ins in this folder are compatible with Photoshop CS5.
The easiest way to determine if third-party, old plug-ins, or plug-ins from previous versions of Photoshop are causing problems is to move them all into a new folder called "3rd Party plug-ins."
If this folder is outside the Photoshop/Plug-Ins folder, you can use the Additional Plug-Ins Folder Plug-In preference to allow Photoshop to access or not access the plug-ins in this folder.

To run Photoshop CS5 on Mac OS as a 32-bit application, select the Adobe Photoshop CS5 application file, installed by default in the Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS5 folder. Choose File > Get Info, and select Open in 32 Bit Mode. Deselect this option to run Photoshop CS5 in 64-bit mode.
To determine if a plug-in causes an error or crash, remove all old or third-party plug-ins from the Adobe Photoshop CS5 > Plug-Ins folder, and deselect Additional Plug-ins Folder in the Photoshop > Preferences > Plug-Ins preference.

What has happened to 'extract' in CS4

CS3 had a menu item filter--extract. I found it useful in removing backgrounds. Anyone know where it is in CS4?

Change where clause filter based on prompt?

Hi,
I am trying to change my where clause filter based on a prompt selected. What I want to do logically looks like this - although it doesn't work as it is not valid case statement syntax:

Where can I get InDesign CS4?

Does anybody know where I can get InDesign CS4? I need it to work with a supplier platform that does not yet support newer versions.

What is the difference of ‘Specify Fragmentation Content’ and ‘where clause Filter ‘
As per my understanding Both looks like limit the data ?

'Specify Fragmentation Content’ is for Union-ing tables, e.g. one table has data for 2008 while other has 2005-2007, so 'Specify Fragmentation Content’ tells server where to go look for data.
'Where clause Filter' is for limiting data from the table, e.g. where status = 'Funded'

The extract filter was removed in CS4. Adobe says there are better options. They prefer edge detection as described below.
Edge Detection: The Extract filter was left out of CS4, although it was available as a separate install. (Rumor has it that the new Edge Detection feature wasn’t ready for CS4 and was pushed back to CS5.) While the Extract filter got a lot of bad press, it was really due to misuse. Luckily, Photoshop CS5 does a better job than the filter. Selection of complex edges, such as curly hair, has always been a problem. The Edge Detection setting is now part of the Refine Edge and Refine Mask dialogs. The feature is fairly easy to use: make a selection or a layer mask, open the Refine Edge dialog (Select>Refine Edge), and use the Refine Radius tool (E) to brush over the desired area. (There’s an Erase Refinements tool [just press Shift-E] in case you don’t like the results and want to try again.) In addition, there’s a Smart Radius checkbox with a Radius adjustment slider to make selections even easier. This tool makes short work of some tough selections, but it’s not for every image. I found it worked great on some images, but not others. You still might want to bone up on using the image calculations for advanced selections.

and even though the help menu said it is to be found in the filter drop-down
menu, it isn't there. Must I extract with CS2, save it, and then reopen it with CS5?

I don't think you should have to pay $100 for a comparable plug-in if Extract does the job. The Mask panel, Color Range and Quick Select do not offer comparable replacements for the Extract tool. With channels, masks and some tweaking you can get similar results, but for hair and wispy edges, the extract filter could give you some useful results. It wasn't perfect, but it's a shame they pulled the plug and didn't really offer a better alternative.
And where's the pattern maker? That one was handy for certain tasks...

SQLEXEC not able to filter extract on sql statement or function call.

hi all,
i'm trying to do some basic extract filtering using a stored function and am not having much success.
i started off using a procedure call but have been unsuccessful getting that working, i've simplified
it to use a sql statement calling a function for a value to filter on, but cannot even get that to work.
i've read through the documentation and i cannot figure out what is going wrong.
any help would be much appreciated.

does not give any errors, but also does not capture any data, it's filtering everything out and trail files are empty, minus a header.

Blog post about Crop Marks Filter in Illustrator CS4

Sometime back a blog article was posted on Adobe Illustrator Blogs at http://blogs.adobe.com/infiniteresolution/ which talks about how Illustrator CS4 users who wanted/asked for the pre-Illustrator CS4 Crop Marks Filter could get it back.

It does do that but it should not show the bleeds as a part of the document it should the document size should be differentiated from the bleed and crop and printer marks area.
You should be able to turn them off for better review purpose with clients and the thing that Acrobat does automatically is to fit the document to the paper size. This I think is a mistake as the ordinary user might not understand what is happening.
If you want to print the document at a 100% it has to go on a paper and to a print that prints documents of a larger size.
It should be clearer as we have reach a point in time where there are most users who have no old world experience with the printing press and plate making so many will not get this true once pointed out it will appear to them as a no brainer.
Also with Acrobat becoming a presentation and conferencing tool for client review in a very live way the ability to turn the bleeds and marks off with a click is very necessary especially hen you have a dead head executive on the other end saying that they never approved that design feature. You can then just click hide the crops or pint out that those marks are outside the documents page size and won't print.
No matter how much sense it makes to you and me because we are very experience with this there will always be people outside our profession that will have a hard time with this and many within our profession as well.
I was aware this was finally included in CS4 but I think it can be improved admittedly you can send a copy of the pdf without bleeds and marks. But you have no control over what they might do on the other side and i have seen some pretty stupid things.
In th old days you know the account exec would come into the art dept and pick the comp off of your drawing table and take his finger and run it over the art and ask is this wet?
I guess I don't have to tell anyone the answer to that question.

Adding Lens to Filter Panel - Bridge CS4

Very new to Photoshop and Bridge CS4 so stilling learning the basics of the applications. After installing I believe I saw Lens in the Filter Panel on the left side of the screen. I no longer see that item to open it up. In fact right clicking in the FIlter Panel gives me a number of catagories to select. They are all selected (including Lens) but only 9 catagories appear in the filter section. How do I get the lens catagory to appear?

First check if you have used files that have been shot with different
lenses. A category in the filter panel only appears if there are two or more
different criteria present, otherwise there would not be any need to filter
Second, the lens has to be capable to interact with the EXIF data in the
camera, most of them do but not all. If a lens can't communicate with this
EXIF data the data will not be present in the metadata that comes with your
file and therefore not be seen by Bridge.
Last, check also the fly out menu top right of the filter panel, put your
mouse on it and you will see the list of filter categories appear. Those
with a checkmark in front are visible, those without are not.
