Where to buy a macbook pro?

I will be buying a macbook pro very soon( cant wait anymore). So where do you think i should buy it from apple walk in store or a compusa store?.I dont know which of this stores get the latest week macbook pros.
Any ideas guys?
cheers

Well, I am afraid no one really will know the answer to your question, so your best bet is to look at the serial number on the box before you make your purchase (explanation below). From what I can tell from these boards, week 12 MBPs seem to be fairly trouble free, and for the most part whine free.
Now I wouldn't be surprised if they get a little ticked at you if they bring up a MacBook to the checkout counter, only to have you inspect the box and then tell them you don't want to buy it after all... but it is a lot of money so I'd say your within your rights.
Anyway, I would hurry down to the Apple SOHO store (prince and green). They had them in stock last weekend. Assuming your going with the full 2 GB of ram, you may have to pick up your machine with 1 GB and wait for the 2nd GB to arrive a few days later. But if you buy it at the Apple store you can just bring your MacBook back in when you go to pick up the extra ram and they will install it for you on the spot.
I'd get there as early as you can tomorrow (saturday), before the weekend crush. And I would highly recommend the 2GB of ram since your going to be running a lot of Apps through Roseta for awhile. I actually think having 2gb of ram is more important than processor speed.
And as far as CompUSA is concerned, I wouldn't bother (the customer service is sooo bad in manhatten CompUSAs). I guess if the Apple store doesn't have a MacBook that is week 12 or later, you could go check CompUSA, but either way, you are going to have to manually inspect the serial number to know which week it is. I doubt anyone on these boards has information on which production week stores are receiving.
OK so regarding the serial number, it is actually really easy to tell which week your mac was made in. Here is how it works.
The first part of the serial number tells you which factory the Mac was made in. I believe all MacBooks are being made in Shanghai so it should start with"W8". The full list of factory codes can be found here:
http://www.tuaw.com/2005/04/14/when-was-your-mac-born/
The next number is the last digit of the year it was made (which should be 6 since they were all made in 2006). So basically all MacBooks made so far should all have serail numbers that start with "W86"
The next 2 number are the production week!
So to sum it all up, look for a serial number that starts with:
W8612....
or higher (like W8613...)
You know, it occurs to me that if you go to the Apple store, and you are really really nice, you might even be able to talk your sales rep into inspecting the serial number for you when he goes to pick up your machine. Its should be easy enough to explain, since they all start with W86, and I think they get some sort of commission or are somehow rewarded for sales, so he should be motivated to help you.
And if you want to double check what I have said, grab a spare mac at the apple store and manually type in the serial number into this site which will also tell you the production week:

good luck

  • Where To Buy My MacBook Pro-- Apple Store or Online?

Does it make a difference? There is an Apple Store just a 15 minute bus ride away from my apartment. Considering I'm goint to get apple care anyway, does it matter if I get it on line or at the store? Pros, cons? What say ye??

I thought the 7200rpm drive was custom. It is in my area. Stock is the 120GB 5400rpm drive and 1GB or RAM.
You may need to order it directly from Apple.
Whatever you do, do NOT buy from MacMall or some other 3rd party. They may be a little cheaper and have some incentives, but consider this:
I ordered my 17" MacBook Pro from them on 4/26/06. They didn't ship to me until 6/8/06! Meanwhile, Apple was shipping within 7 days since the beginning of May, and the Apple store had plenty of them available.
If you think that issue is resolved and MacMall has plenty of stock now so the wait is not that bad...wait, there's more...
I'm having issues with my system, and I called Apple. They told me I needed to get a new system because it's defective, but since I purchased it from MacMall I would need to call them about it. I did, and MacMall told me to call Apple back because they have a "no return policy" on Macs. What??? So I call Apple and they tell me they're sorry, but that I will need to send it in for repair.
I should have purchased it directly from Apple and paid the tax instead of paying for the Apple Care, which is not doing me any good now anyway.
So you have 2 options - go to the store and pick up whatever they can sell you, or order it directly from Apple where you can customize your order and get it within a week or two and actually benefit from Apple's support. From now on that's the only way I will ever go.

I apologize if this is "sticking my nose in where it does not belong", but ...
At least one other poster received a "gift" of an 11 in Macbook Air from a grandmother, but really wanted a 13 in Pro.  The question was if the computer could be swapped for the better unit.
I assume the recipient will not be so inapproptiate as to say "wrong computer -- I want a better one!!!", but the recipient may have certain items on their "Wish List".

Yes. Apple care is associated with the serial number, and stays with the machine even if you where to sell the machine before the Apple care expires.

Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store.  If you want to buy something, you must contact stores directly yourself in the country where you live.  Apple stores do not ship outside their own county.

  • When I buy  a macbook pro now , will it have mac os x lion on it?

when I buy  a macbook pro now , will it have mac os x lion on it?

It would depend on when it was produced, eg if it has been sitting in a store for months it maybe loaded with the older operating system, whereas if it is newly produced it should come with lion on it.

  • If I buy a MacBook pro in the USA would it still work in new zealand?

I was thinking of buying a MacBook pro in Los Angeles and was wondering if it would work in new Zealand where I live?

Yes, it will work in EnZed. You would need either a different power cord or a wall outlet adaptor to work with your wall outlets.
And, you'll have to get used to it speaking with an accent.

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The AppleCare FAQs has some information that you might find helpful:

Where can I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan?
Depending on the Apple product, the AppleCare Protection Plan is available at the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail Stores, and many Apple Authorized Resellers including many wireless service providers. Apple recommends that you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan in your country of residence, because each AppleCare Protection Plan has terms and conditions specific to consumers in the country or region in which the plan is offered. • I am going to buy a macbook pro for grade 12, and I need to know wheather I should get a macbook pro or a macbook pro retina. If someone could tell me (in a very simple way) which one is,better for me and why, I would be ever so apprreciative.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

  • Should I buy a Macbook Pro for college? If so which one?

Going to college in a couple of weeks. I was planning on buying a Macbook Pro but I don't really know if I need it or if it's worth the price. I was looking at the 13 inch i5 and i7 versions. If I would buy the i5 one, I would like to upgrade the hard drive to 500G for an extra 50 bucks but was wondering if it was worth just going for the i7 processor version which already includes a 500G hard drive. It would be an extra 250 dollars. Also, if I buy either one of these, will it last me 4-6 years of college? I know that technology goes by fast and would rather spend an extra couple hundred dollars if its going to last me longer. I am majoring in Petroleum Engineering and will not be using much video editing or gaming.
I've been reading many reviews and statements about Macs from all over the internet but I have a few more questions about Macbook Pros. I have always been a PC guy.
Do Macs really stay fast longer? Like doesn't slow down as much.
How limited is the compatibility now days?
    Worth the big price tag?
How big of a difference is the i5 and i7 processors?
Can you put a laptop lock on it? It will probably be a big target for thieves and I hear there are many in college.
    Should I get Apple Care?
Is there more programs I would need to buy? I am getting a 100 dollar gift card thing to the apple app store but wondering if I need Microsoft Office or something that isn't from the Apple store
The reason I ask these questions is because I would rather have an answer from a community of people with multiple answers and opinions than a biased website or reviewer. Well there will be some biased since this is an apple forum but please answer truthfully and as unbiased as possible please! Thanks!

Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store.  So to find out whether you can buy something, you must contact stores or consult their websites directly yourself.   If not available in the online store, try contacting a retail store and see if they can make a special order

  • Could I be refused Applecare if I was to buy a MacBook Pro from Ebay?

So, I'm looking to buy a MacBook Pro. Only problem is, I'd rather not have to spend the £1000 I'd need to do so.. Mainly because I haven't exactly got it all, and even if I do, I'd rather not spend it all..
I've been browsing ebay looking at Pros for sale, and I've found a few possible ones- But I want to know if anyone else has done the same and had certain problems in the past? I mean, I would only consider buying from someone with 97% - 100% positive feedback anyways..
My idea was to buy a one that I liked the look of, for say, £400 maximum, and then just buy apple care afterwards from the actual apple store.. Good plan?
Some people have mentioned that Apple may refuse to sell/cover me with applecare? Would they actually refuse it? And if so- how could I get around it?
Any help and advice will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance-
    L!

You can only buy Applecare in the first year of ownership. Not sure if any Used Mac's can get Applecare. I think it is for the original buy only, but I may be wrong on that.
Sure if the system was older then one year Apple would not sell you Applecare even if you were the original owner.
That is One Year from Date of Original Purchase. 367 day old NO Applecare.
