I know JDeveloper also can design database model(but i don't use it) ,so I want to know which database design tool to use includinglogical data model?

JDeveloper as A Database Design Tool

Would anyone recommend it? I'm looking into usage of a few tools at the moment and I'm suprisingly impressed with JDeveloper. I find it to be a hell of a lot easier to use then Oracle Designer which i Just don't like.
If anyone has used it in a project before would they recommend it. One feature I'm looking for which I can't find (possibly cause I don;t know where to look is, is there an option to export the diagram to imagery formats like jpeg? Apart from that looks good so far

Without having any experience in Oracle Designer, I would definitely recommend JDeveloper as a database design tool. I've used it in every project I've done so far.
Regarding your question about exporting a database diagram to a format like JPG: that's perfectly possible: on your diagram, right click and choose 'Publish Diagram'.

DB Design? I see a lot of instructor led classes most
of them only 2-3 days long.

Folks,
Most CASE tools allow for UDTs to be entered but don't do anything with
them - bit like "pass through" queries in Access!
The only 2 I know of that try and model Spatial data and topological
relationships between tables are Blueprint (free download from
www.geometryit.com) and Perceptory (requires Visio) from ULaval in Canada.
The Blueprint tool is very flexible but does not model the data type directly
(you are effectively limited to one spatial type per table). The product is
no longer under active development (because of the lack of people who
feel they need such a thing). I have asked the owners to make it open source
but they have only moved to a free download of the unsupported product.
However, Blueprint's power is in its scripting language. I have a bunch of scripts that will generate oracle spatial DDL, Trimble Data Dictionaries and other spatial
products from the model that I am willing to share.

Searching for a good relational database design tool

Hi!
I am designing an oracle database for our plant, and I want to use a entity-relationship diagram tool to create it.
I want to design the data diagram with it, and generate creation code and run it to create the DB on our oracle server.
I would appreciate that someone suggest good quality tools that can be used to do entity-relationship diagrams and implement the db not only on oracle, but to SQL server as well, as future designs for other projects may be implemented in SQL server.
A small list of quality tools with their noteworthy features would be greatly appreciated.

For Oracle database, Oracle Designer is the best.
If you want to be able to use it for various databases you might think of:
- ERwin
- Embarcadero ER Studio
- Sybase power designer

Database Design in JDeveloper

Hi,
In JDeveloper 10.1.3.1 (existing) database can be imported (I red about it in Oracle Magazine by Steve Muench). I selected some existing tables and printed these. This works fine and looks good on paper.
I was wondering how trigger-code, functions, procedures can be imported (or created) in JDeveloper. Also, can I add storage information like tablespaces to objects?
I would like to use JDeveloper as database-design tool (therefore I need some basic 'designer' functionality)

From my 'Connections' page I can create a trigger. Thats fine.
But imagine I do not have a database yet. I want to start from scratch and first create a new table having a simple trigger on it. I go to the 'Applications' page and in the 'Database Design' I drag a table from pallete. This works fine. But, how to add a trigger to this table??

Where can I find the 'club' database sample used in the 'Information Design Tool' tutorials?

Hi experts!
I have been studying the tutorials for the Information Design Tool (http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-8461) and in some of them they use a database called 'club'. For what I see, this is an Access 2007 database and has some tables called City, Region, Customer, etc. I have been searching it across the web and have not found it.
Hope somebody knows where I can find this sample.

Logical Database design and physical database implementation

I am an ORACLE DBA basically and we started a proactive server dashboard portal ,which basically reports all aspects of our infrastructure (Dev,QA and Prod,performance,capacity,number of servers,No of CPU,decomissioned date,OS level,Database patch level) etc..
This has to be done entirely by our DBA team as this is not externally funded project.Now i was asked to do " Logical Database design and physical Database
implementation"
Even though i know roughly what's that mean(like designing whole set of tables in star schema format) ,i have never done this before.
In my mind i have a rough set of tables that can be used but again i think there is lot of engineering involved in this area to make sure that we do it properly.
I am wondering you guys might be having some recommendations for me in the sense where to start?are there any documents online , are there any book on this topic?Are there any documents which explain this phenomena with examples ?

Logical database design is the process of taking a business or conceptual data model (often described in the form of an Entity-Relationship Diagram) and transforming that into a logical representation of that model using the specific semantics of the database management system. In the case of an RDBMS such as Oracle, this representation would be in the form of definitions of relational tables, primary, unique and foreign key constraints and the appropriate column data types supported by the RDBMS.
Physical database implementation is the process of taking the logical database design and translating that into the actual DDL statements supported by the target RDBMS that will create the database objects in a target RDBMS database. This will generally include specific physical implementation details such as the specification of tablespaces, use of specialised indexing (bitmap, clustered etc), partitioning, compression and anything else that relates to how data will actually be physically stored inside the database.
It sounds like you already have a physical implementation? If so, you can reverse engineer this implementation into a design tool such as SQL Developer Data Modeller. This will create a logical design by examining the contents of the Oracle data dictionary. Even if you don't have an existing database, Data Modeller is a good tool to use as a starting point for logical and even conceptual/business models.
If you want to read anything about logical design, "An Introduction to Database Systems" by Date is always a good starting point. "Database Systems - A Practical Approach to Design, Implementation and Management" by Connolly & Begg is also an excellent reference.

Does anyone use tools to automatically update the structure of an existing
database?
For example, you have a full database model (Power Designer) and you've
created a script to create all these tables in a new and empty database.
You've been using this database and filling tables with data for a while.
Now you want to do some marginal modifications on these tables. Add a
column, remove a column, rename a column, etc.
Is there a way to automatically change the database without losing data and
without having to do it manually (except the manual changes in the (Power
Designer) model).

Hello Pascal,
Forte has classes which might be able to scan the database structure
(DBColumnDesc,etc.). Express use this classes to determine how the
BusinessClass looks like. We use Forte to create the tables,indexes and
constraints. We have the Problem that the above described classes are only
readable but not fillable. The solution for us will be to create our own
classes in
the same manner than existing classes are. So we are able to make updates in
the database structure and maybe able to change the database tables with tool
code. Another reason for us to have the database structure in the
application is the
ability to see the table structure on which the Forte code works always up
to date
with the code. You are always able to compare the structure of the database
with
your businessclasses and able to convert a wrong structure to the correct
structure
with maybe just a little piece of code.

JDeveloper902 as a DB-design tool ?

Hello JDeveloper forum,
At KMS we are evaluating JDeveloper902 to see, whether it can be used as a DB-design tool for reverse and forward engineering of our DataBases. I have been warned, that the UML-parts in JDev. are kind of fringe benefit.
However at KMS we have (amongst others) Oracle9i Spatial databases, wherein some tables have attributes of
- SDO_geometry (Spatial)
- Abstract Data Types (user defined at KMS)
and my trial runs show that JDev does reverse and forward engineer such attribute types correctly. No other DB-design tool seems able to do it as well, and hence I am keen on using JDev for DB-design.
But I have found some problems with JDev and was advised to seek assistance in this forum.
My questions are as follows

1) Forward engineering by right click on a package -> create database objects seems to overwrite (drop) my existing table of the same name. This is disastrous as we risk loosing tables containing millions of rows. I really just want to alter the table by fx. adding a new column. Is it possible for JDev. to just create a DDL-script instead?
2) Can the associations be shown as zig-zag lines instead of stright lines in the class diagram?
3) Is it possible to move text labels an an association? This is very desirable to avoid overlap, when 2 associations link the same 2 classes.

- reverse eng. each of our production DataBases being Oracle9i Spatial, Oracle8, Informix or Ingres into a design spec.
- maintain the DB-design spec. for each DB
- forward eng. changes in the DB-design spec. to take effect in the production DB
- design new DataBases to future applications
- forward engineer a new DB-design into a Oracle9 DataBase
We prefer using UML a class diagram when doing DB-design as that is the output of DataModelling at KMS.

Sorry to disappoint you but Synchronize functionality is meant to be used when you've made changes to the database and you want them reflected in the business components. There is currently no functionality in JDeveloper which will generate the 'alter table' statements that you require. JDeveloper is currently in the process of implementing a Database Modeler which will hopefully allow you to do what you want but currently there is no idea what future version of JDeveloper this will be available in.
In the mean time to work around the issue (although time-consuming) would be to export your data, do the generation and then import your data again.
The other alternative is as previously suggested would be to use Oracle Designer, which would easily be able to keep your diagram and database properly in sync. You would need to validate that it can handle your attribute types. Designer also gives you the option of generating DDL or generating straight to the database. Even though Designer is not UML compliant, it does have very good modeling capabilities especially in the area you are interested in.

Database Designer App

Hi,
I need to make a database designer type application.
Where there are floating list boxes that can be moved around. Each of the list boxes will represent a tables and you can drag relationships between the list boxes which will create a line mapping the rows of the list boxes.
kinda like sql server or any type of RDB mapping tool.
Not really sure even how to start with the movable list boxes. Any suggestions?

But not sure how to draw the lines and also be able to select the lines between the windows.

let me explain :
in BI 4.0, the Data Federator Query Server engine is now part of the server-side Adaptive Processing Server .
You only invoke this architecture when you select "Multi Source Enabled" - any other entry point is NOT using the Data Federation Service.
So - if you select SingleSource - that's not using DF.
However, it is entirely possible to select "Multi Source Enabled" then only use 1 connection in the MSU !!
Having said the above, Your second question doesn't make sense.
Unless you mean, using the Data Federator middleware driver in BI 4.0 IDT, to connect to an XI 3.1 Data Federator Query Server? (i.e. consuming the 'old source' in the new enviornment)
This backwards compatibility was delivered to facilitate transition of DF customers, especially since there is no standalone DF product in BI 4.0 (yet)
