Which drive is the boot drive?
I installed a 2nd hard drive in my G4 dual 1ghz sometime around 2001. I'm now on a G5 and would like to pull the 2nd drive from the G4 and put it in a firewire enclosure to use with the G5. How can I tell which drive is the boot drive and which is the secondary drive? I kind of remember that the 2nd drive went in the lower bay but I'm not 100% sure. Any other caveats to pulling out this drive? Thanks in advance.
Power Mac dual 1ghz
The system profiler should tell you the serial number of the hard drive, or type of hard drive when you select it in the IDE bus. Compare that with the label on the drive itself.
Both bays can have boot drives, though typically master jumper drives are better able to boot than slaves on certain operating systems.
You can tell the existing boot drive, because it is the first drive that appears in the upper right hand corner of the desktop if you view and arrange the desktop by kind.
If you just want to transfer data over from a G4 to a G5, you may want to use Target Disk Mode:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Note, if the G4 is the kind that can boot into Mac OS 9, set it as the Target machine. In addition, if it is running 10.2.2 or earlier it should be the target machine, because 10.2.2 and earlier don't understand the Journaled operating system which may be installed on your G5.

How to identify which drive is the current boot drive?
I have a PowerBook running Leopard, and I prefer to boot from the external drive. It's bigger and has my working files. The current internal drive is for future use, for when I have a replacement machine. I know how to specify the boot drive in Preferences, but sometimes the machine reboots without me. I don't know how to verify which drive I'm booted from. I changed the desktop background, so that once I'm logged in I can tell, but surely there is a more direct way to determine this. Isn't there?
A simple option would be to select About this Mac from the Apple menu.

Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp.

How small can I make the boot camp partition on my MacBookPro internal drive?
it seems that in order to get Windows7 on to my old non supported MacPro 1.1 that I need to firist install onto this mid 2009 MacBook Pro I want to do the install onto an external firwire800 hard drive which I have formater and Downloaded and installed the Windows support folder using the boot camp installer but the installer wants to grab 20 gig of my internal drive for the win 7 install what is the minimun that I must have on the internal drive to install and use win 7 on the external drive?
is ther annother way to get Win7 onto my MacPro1.1 where it can live on an internal drive of its own. I do not have have it running on this MBP5.3 other than to get it running (64 mode) on the old tower In addition to the MBP I have at hand the esternal drive a blank 16 gig thumb drive and a firewire800 external DVD drive that I use mostly as a burner on the macpro as it is faster than the internal superdrive that it came withI assume that is a product so then I can remove the bootcamp partition from my internal drive and boot to the firewire 800 drive or do I need to have a SSD drive inside the macbookpro first?

HT5639 after The Boot Camp for Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD
after i made The Boot Camp Setup for running Microsoft Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD
thanks for the response
1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion -
Adding a 2nd HD, and making it the boot drive.
Hi Folks. This may come out rather lengthy, but there's a lot of information bedhind why I'm looking for a specific solution. I just bought a second drive (Maxtor DiamondMax 11 400GB hard drive with 16mb buffer), which should arrive next week. I will be installing it into a PowerMac G5 dual 2.5ghz, with 3GB RAM and an original 250GB hard drive. Since I got the computer, I've had consistant problems with many programs, especially with iLife '06 (specifically Garageband, which is supper buggy, and iPhoto which will not import photos). I have upgraded from '05, since the problems started there, but I've had the same problems and moreso, even after fully reinstalling the OS once (I run 10.3.9). There are other little goofy quirks, too (superdrive communication, Safari, system preference configuration, etc.), and after spending many hours on the phone with tech support, and on the messagboards, I can confirm that I seem to be the only one with all of these problems. I believe that I have a problematic hard drive, and I am interested in installing OSX onto this new hard drive and then transferring all of my files to it manually, then wiping the old drive. I am not interested in doing a Carbon Copy, since I've had so many problems with all the software, that I just want to start from scratch. A nice clean install.
So, my questions are, how can I:
1. Effectively format and install a new stable version of OSX onto the second hard drive?
2. Switch the second drive to be the boot drive, and manually transfer the file data from the old drive to the new drive?
3. Erase the old drive and use it for data? I would also be interested in effective ways to test the drive to see if it is defective.
And finally, just because I'm already asking questions, the best way to get Apple to replace the drive, if indeed it tests as defective.
If any of ya'll can help me put a plan together, then when my second hard drive comes next week, I will know exactly how to bring it all together without screwing anything up.
Thanks in advance,
Ben

Boot from the OS X install DVD and install it.
"2. Switch the second drive to be the boot drive, and manually transfer the file data from the old drive to the new drive?"
It will be chosen automatically after the install. Otherwise: System Preferences --> Startup Disk

Best way to move Users folder off the boot drive
I read a couple of old threads regarding this topic, but I have some lingering questions...
I'm awaiting my Mac Pro. I ordered it with one drive. I plan on adding two drives in a RAID 0 array for data (which will be backed up regularly, of course) as soon as I get the Mac.
This is my first Mac, so I've got some questions (long time PC user as well as AIX & Linux user):
1. Is it better to move the entire /Users folder or just selected /Users/<user_name> folders? I'm thinking it's safer to just move selected /Users/<user_name> folders (e.g. my "everyday" accoun'ts home directory, other family members' home folders, and the /Users/Shared folder). That way, in the event that I have a problem with my data drive (a RAID 0 array), I can login as an admin whose home folder is still in the boot drive and I won't have any problems logging in as that user when doing maintenance.
2. Is it safe to move (and delete from the boot drive) the /Users/<user_name>/Library folder? Note that I plan on moving the home folders on a brand new Mac, but will things get messed up if I delete /Users/<user_name> folders from the boot drive once I've moved them to the RAID array?
3. Are there any ill-behaved programs that expect Users to be in the boot drive, so I have to create a /Users/<user_name> soft link that points to the actual folder in the RAID array?
4. I believe I found the steps suggested in Pogue's Mac OS X Missing Manual book (although it's in the context of moving the folder to an external drive). Basically, it entails running:
a. sudo ditto -rsrc "/Users/<user_name>" "/Volumes/<thenewhome>"
b. Then, in Accounts pane of System Preferences under Advanced Options, enter the new Home folder.
c. Reboot and delete the original /Users/<user_name>
Does this sound right? Seems really simple (much easier than in the Windows world).
Thanks.Just wanted to clarify:
1. Mike Bombich's method entails moving the entire /Users folder to another drive so everyone's home is moved?
2. David Pogue's method (as described in the Missing Manual) only entails moving individual, selected home folders to another drive (and no soft links needed)?
3. It sounds like Pogue's method is preferable anyway (for the paranoid at least), so if the 2nd drive dies or needs maintenance, I can still login as a user whose home folder is in the boot drive?
4. So, if I use Pogue's method, all that is needed are the steps listed in my original post above, and nothing else?
Thanks. -
I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.
I have pressed "C" during boot to force it to boot from the Optical Drive. It boots normally.
I have pressed "option" to get the boot menu. The only option available is my hard disk drive.
I have pressed "option""command""shift""delete" at the same time during boot to force it to skip booting the hard disk. I get a blinking smily face/question mark for a while, then it shows the boot menu, at which point the only available option is my hard disk drive.
In system preferences in OS X I have looked to change the boot drive, but the only option, again, is the hard disk.
Can I not boot from the Optical Drive?
Why?Hello,
From the link I provided it says:
Nearly all open-source software is available to download from the Ubuntu repositories, but the amount of proprietary software available for PowerPC linux is limited. You will have the same version of Firefox, LibreOffice, etc as other architectures.
Notable absentees are: Chrome/Chromium, Adobe Flash (although open-source alternatives are available, see below), Wine (however Qemu can be used, see below), ndiswrapper, proprietary video drivers and Dropbox (but, you can use Ubuntu One).
I do recall it being very limited when it came do downloading Linux software that supported PPC.
You wouldn't be any better off than using firefox or safari on Mac OS X 10.4.11.
If your looking for a faster and more compatible web browser then I would suggest the following, which I've recently found very useful on Mac OS X 10.4

Does OS X throttle hard disk performance on the boot drive?
Does OS X throttle hard disk performance on the boot drive?
I was upgrading my boot drive on a Mac Pro (1,1) from the original Seagate 7200.9 250gb drive to a new Western Digital Caviar Black model 1tb drive.
What surprised me was that disk benchmarking tools (both AJ System Test and Xbench) showed that the new drive had a 30% decrease in speed tests (primarily writes) when actually serving as the boot drive. Put back in the original drive, and while not as extreme as the new drive, it also shows slower write speeds while serving as the boot drive vs serving as an extra internal drive.
In Xbench, the writes are both sequential and random unchached writes, AJ System test is less descriptive, but the write speeds on the new drive are painfully slow to watch.
Hardware-wise, I'd think this new WD
Is there something in the OS that impacts this? Is it something that can be tuned or tweaked? I feel like I'm not getting the most bang for my buck on the new drive (or the old for that matter).
That said, the new drive reads more than twice as fast as the old, and I can feel the difference significantly on boot up (login screen appears faster) and all my startup items load up much faster after logging in.R C-R wrote:
Keep in mind that benchmarks don't really mean much unless test conditions are the same for each test. Benchmark each drive used as the boot drive & you get a relative comparison of their performance as a boot drive.
Which was really all I was after in the first place, and more as a curiosity than anything else, but it was just too unreal to see the drive lose half its read/write speed just because it was the boot drive. I'd expect, and accept, some relative drop in performance, but there seems like there was something wrong.
My problem gets stranger at this point. I was about to give up on using this drive, it was actually painfully slow to use and I'd gone back to my original drive. I thought I'd give it one more chance as part of some external drive enclosure stuff I was doing.
I put the drive back in Bay 1 on my Mac Pro, and it took forever to boot up, and when I ran benchmarks on it, they were only 5-10% of what I'd seen as a scratch drive, yes, that's 5% total. I actually got a score of 5.04 on Xbench. As a scratch drive, the thing gets in the 90's, and as boot drive it was getting 40s to 50s.
Anyways, after avoiding temptation to throw the thing against the wall, I tried putting it into an eSATA external dock, and booted from it. I am typing this from that boot session right now. The system booted up lightening fast, and benchmarks in Xbench are comparable to when it's a scratch drive, and AJA System Test just showed read/write speeds of 98 MB/s. This is what I would expect.
So now my issue appears to be that my Mac Pro, for some reason, is throttling, make that strangling, this particular hard drive when it is placed in Bay 1 and used as a boot drive. Some kind of hardware issue on the internal SATA bus? Incompatibility with this drive and Mac Pros? It's gonna take some more research or testing I guess.
Very frustrating. Reminiscent of my days with Beige Boxes running WindowsXP; certainly not the "it just works" experience I've grown to love since switching a few years ago.
I'll post back when I find out more.
Thanks again for the followup, and interestingly, I didn't get an email notification of an update to the thread. Odd. -
Which one is the reliable drive?
I saw 2 external hard drives on close out and was wondering which one is considered more reliable? One is the G-drive desktop and the seagate backup for Mac which looks like the go flex except it has a 800 FireWire. I'm leaning towards the G-drive because of the on off switch and 2 FireWire while the seagate has one FireWire and no switch. From the review I read both have complains on reliability although much more on the G-drive which is sold at apple store and supposedly recommended by their employees. I want to make the right decision and would appreciate anybody on this board who had any experiences with these drives please share them here. Thanks.
Tee Jay wrote:
Den.thed, are you indicating that the Mercury although slightly more expensive than G-drive is the better quality among the three?
No I can not recommend that one is better quality than the other.
I can however say that I prefer having two or more smaller backup drives verses having 1 large backup drive because nobodies hardware is 100% free from failure.
Likewise it really depends on having a good backup strategy and how important your data is to you. For example if you had only a 2T for Time Machine and it failed then your backups are gone. Plus you can not boot and run from Time Machine if your internal fails. Whereas if you had for example a 500GB or 1T for Time Machine and a 500GB for cloning, you have two backups and can boot and run from the clone if your internal fails.
Have a look at > My backup plan: Dan Frakes | Macworld and then decide if you still want one 2T drive or perhaps if maybe a couple of 500GB drives or a 500GB and a 1T might be the better choice. -
Partitioning the boot drive without wiping it clean
Hey all,
I was wondering if it is possible to partition the boot drive (in my case, the only drive - running a mid-2012 MBP) without wiping it clean during the process. Basically, I need a small (50/500GB) partition that I can install Fedora on so I can use my Linux dev tools while away from home.
I've seen information that says a couple things, which are either conflicting or very ambiguous as to the results.
a) I've read that Fedora can be installed via Bootcamp through use of Bootcamp's partitioning, but Bootcamp Assistant won't allow me to make a partition without a Win7 install disk. Is this a component that was removed through a version?
b) I've seen answers on here that state that partition w/o wipe works if the new partition is created using the default filestructs (Mac OS X Extended or w/e), but doesn't go into much detail after that. Are we talking Disk Utility here?
If b) is true, then can someone confirm that? This is a computer I use for work, so I'd rather not end up with a complete brick for the next few days.@blasthash:
It's interesting to see VikingOSX' suggestion, because I'm in the process of adding a LM OS to my MBPro, so I'm going to check out VB . . . . I've done a dual boot set up before using rEFIt as boot manager, which now apparently doesn't work with Mtn Lion . . . it's now rEFInd . . . so having to figure that one out. Viking's suggestion might indeed be safer, the problem with that is then the Linux system is "virtual" rather than the boot system . . . which uses memory. In my case I only have 4GB on my MBPro.
It's very easy to partition the HD using DU . . . select the HD in the left side DU window, click the >partitions tab and select the number of partitions you want, and >click apply . . . viola . . . HD is partitioned . . . . The original boot system remains intact, and you can install or do what you will with the other partitions--the size of them is by dragging the "borders" to the size you want.
That's the easy part--of course you should do a cloned back up before you do anything--the Linux install part you could look at rEFInd's support page or search "rodbooks" and find his dual boot instructions. I did that with my dual boot set up -- using Bootcamp -- which went OK until I wanted to get a third partition, but Bootcamp had locked the HD . . . so I had to wipe the HD to get my now dual boot 10.6.8 & 10.8.5? system set up with a third partition set as "Freespace" . . . ready for a Linux OS install . . . using DU this time.
So, VikingOSX's advice is probably the easiest, possibly the safest . . . but it depends on using a lot of memory . . . it's like "Classic" . . . "you're in 10, but you're in 9" . . . as an old hippie guy said to me when I got my first G4 . . . . You'd be running Fedora within OSX and there ****might**** be a speed differential. Booted up as the root system Linux is pretty fast . . . gltichy, but fast. It takes a bit of work to get the boot manager rEFInd set up, but once that's done the installation into "Largest freespace" is usually pretty easy, I 've done a lot of Linux installs now and I mostly use the "automatic" option and let the system set it up. Point being, the other way, the dual boot "dark side" way is a tad more complicated, but more fun.
It just depends on whether you just need to do a "few things every now and again in Linux" . . . or whether you want to be able to run the full capacity of your machine using Linux . . . . Up to you . . . OSX probably still remains the best OS, but because Linux isn't perfect, it's "interesting" . . . to DIYers.

Can I just move the boot drive from my iMac to new Quad G5?
I've "upgraded" from a 1.8 GHz 20" iMac (Rev. A) with 2 GB RAM to a 2.7 GHz Quad G5 with 5 GB RAM and I'm not seeing the performance jump I expected for simple stuff like logging in after system restart (and the start up applications), launching applications, etc. The system profiler reports 4 CPUs, 5 GB RAM, etc. Memory intensive operations seem quicker but I haven't performed any real benchmarks and have a new drive in the iMac. The system just doesn't "feel" faster for basic stuff. I realize these may not be CPU intensive tasks but still expected to see a little more livelier system.
I moved the iMac drive to bay B of the Quad and set it as the boot drive. Are there any folders, caches, etc. that need to be cleared?
The new boot drive (my iMac's old drive) is a 300 GB Seagate ST3300831AS. (The original iMac drive developed a problem and was replaced with this drive a couple of months ago. I noticed an improvement as this drive is a little faster than the stock Maxtor.)
The original Quad drive is a 500 GB Hitachi HDS725050KLA360.
Specs of the two drives seem to be virtually identical as far as I can tell. (Actually I think the Seagate has .5 ms faster seek.)
I'm thinking the issue is that the lack of performance gain I'm seeing is disk I/O and that the iMac wasn't lacking in power for basic stuff so I will only see the performance gain with applications that can take advantage of the additional CPUs and/or GPU. Still, I expected the system to feel a little faster.
I just tried Virtual PC and it didn't seem to start up much faster and I definately expected to see a big improvement with this application.
Any ideas? That's correct, I moved the iMac drive to the second bay in the new Quad G5.
I wasn't sure if any combination of events would fix this. I didn't think there were any caches or anything else I needed to clear but just posted here to be sure.
The iMac was 10.4.3 and current with all updates. I didn't really think anything was missing but posted here to be sure. My understanding of Mac OS X is such that I was pretty sure that everything the Quad needed was already on the iMac drive. Not that this is necessarily any more reliable, but I asked at the Apple store and they said there was no problem with me moving the drive to the Quad and setting it as the startup volume.
A few people have told me that it's probably OK, but the official method is to use the migration assistant. So today I installed from the Power Mac OS X discs (10.4.2) to the Hitachi drive which I erased, then ran the migration assistant, then software update, then cloned the Hitachi drive back to the Seagate. I think the performace of the two drives is nearly identical (Seagate ST3300831AS, Hitachi HDS725050KLA360) and wanted the smaller (300 GB) Seagate drive to be my main drive.
I've been using Macs for only about a year and have found the experience interesting. On the plus side the performance is fairly consistant and I don't experience progressive system slowdown over a period of months. And of course there are the system update, viruses, etc. issues which are better. On the negative side basic stuff feels faster on a Windows system. I'll try Photoshop which I have no doubt will be faster on the Quad than the iMac and probably faster than a PC, too. But Safari or Firefox don't feel as fast as IE on a new Windows PC. Just my observation. I invested a lot in this Quad and expected to feel a significant speed boost even if it's only for launching applications and displaying web pages. (I have Comcast's highest speed Internet service.) -

Is the spotlight index stored on the boot drive or individual volumes?
Hello!
My questions are pretty simple, and are sumarized here (from the block of text below):
First, if I have several external hard drives, is the Spotlight index file for each drive stored on the external hard drive, or on OS X's boot drive?
Secondly, if it's stored on the boot drive, can I copy these files to another Tiger-running Mac to eliminate the need to re-index the hard drives? Where do I find them?
Third: Leopard's Spotlight has quite a few new features. Even if the Tiger index files are stored on the external drive, will it need to re-index the drive to support the new feature set?
Now for the long explenation:
I have been preparing to upgrade my Powerbook to Leopard within the next month or two, and as such, I bought a new hard drive to dedicate one of my old drives to Leopard and Time Machine. Because I have three extrernal hard drives, I needed to move about 500 GB of data between the thee drives to make room for what was on the now-dedicated drive. Of course, this requires that Spotlight re-index the "new" drives.
Today, I left all of the drives attached to my old G4, running Tiger, while it sits there indexing the three drives, totaling around a terrabyte of external storage. Because Spotlight tends to hog all of the available CPU time, and the G4 should be done indexing the drives, it would save me a lot of time if I could copy the index files over from the G4 to my Powerbook to avoid indexing them all over again. That is, if the index files are not on the external drives already. If they are on the G4's boot drive, where do I find these files?
Finally, I plan to reformat the internal hard drive of my Powerbook when I install Leopard - I make a habit of doing a fresh install for every major upgrade (eg, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, etc). To estimate the amount of time needed to upgrade, I'd be nice to know if Leopard will need to re-index the files on the external drives - even if Tiger's spotlight index is stored on the externals - for Leopard's new Spotlight features. Will it need to re-index? I would assume that until Leopard arrives, most people wouldn't know this, of course.
Thanks a bunch,
-DanEach drive's Spotlight index is located on that drive.

I downloaded some videos to Premier Elements 13 from an external hard drive but now the external hard drive is damaged. While setting up my new MAC the external hard drive was dropped and I have been told by an outside source they could not retrieve the files. It had 4 years of photos and videos on it. I remembered that I had downloaded some of the videos from the external hard drive (before it was broke) to Adobe Organizer 13 when I installed the Adobe 13 on my MACOS X 10.9.5. I tried to open the videos on the organizer which it shows the video but with a yellow ? and says missing file. Is there anyway I can open these videos?
Any input is greatly appreciated!! I am sick over losing the videos and had a little hope on Adobe Organizer until I was unable to open them. I am thinking it is due to my external hard drive not being plugged in. I thought when I transferred from the external hard drive to Adobe 13 that it would be there without the external hard drive needing to be attached but maybe I did something wrong.
Thanks again for any help!!!!jnrmendonca
It had 4 years of photos and videos on it.
To what did your camera record those photos and videos - camera's internal memory, inserted memory card, other?
Any remote chance that the latter may still exist for you to use to download the camera files to your new external hard drive?
