Which DVI connector do I need?

I bought a DVI to HDMI adapter yesterday, only to discover that the DVI plug was the wrong size!
I've had a look around and I can't find anything that looks like it is the right size, mini-div, micro-dvi... what do I need normal DVI?

Keep in mind that DVI doesn't carry the audio signal so you'll have to have separate audio cables.

Hi There,
I have a T61 in a 2504 docking station. I wish to connect 2 screens - 1 by the normal VGA and the other by the DVI connection.
My issue is that I do not know which DVI to buy. DVI-D, DVI-A, DVI-I etc etc.
Can someone tell me the correct DVI for my docking station.

The DVI port on the dock only supports DVI-D connection which is digital connection.
The DVI-A is analogue signal that is carried on the applicable cable. While, DVI-I is DVI-Integrated which carries both the digital and analogue signal.

Which DVI connector for MacBook Pro model 3,1?

I assume the DVI out on the 2007 MacBook Pro (model identifier 3,1) is a nonstandard DVI and requires a DVI-to-DVI adapter? It looks like a fullsize connector that I could attach with a standard DVI, but I thought I needed a 30.00 adapter, is this true?

The connector that will be used on your MBP has to reflect the input requirements of you TV. Newer ones will have HDMI inputs, older ones may have VGA. In both instances, you will have to supply audio to your TV via the audio output port of your MBP.

Which DVI cable do i need????

I have a MBP 1.1 (first gen intel, core duo). 2.16ghz. I want to be able to connect it to an external monitor using a dvi to vga cable... However ive seen on the net that there are a few different types of DVI connections out there, i dont want the hastle of buying the wrong one and that, as that has already happened, i plugged in the connector and it wouldnt recognise the monitor and nothing happened...
I see there are dvi-i, div-d male and female etc etc....
Can anyone give me a link to the exact connector i need to hhok it up to another monitor please...

Considering buying a Mac Mini but I need to know about support for dual monitors using DVI connectors.

I have a couple of DVI monitors and I'm looking to replace my Windows desktop with a Mac Mini. I found an article that says it supports dual monitors with Thunderbolt, but I can't find any discussion of using it with existing monitor, or running multiple DVI displays off a single Thunderbolt port.

Yes, the Mac Mini has both an HDMI and Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port and supports dual displays in either Mirroring or Extended Desktop Mode.
It ships with an HDMI to DVI adapter that you can use for one DVI Display.
For the second DVI display you will need to buy a > Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and plug that into the Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port.

Mac Pro Compatibility With Older SATA Drives And DVI Connectors

I soon plan to replace my 5 year old G5 with a new Mac Pro and need two questions answered so that I will know what options i have for the transfer of older data and apps. The Apple web site for the Mac Pro includes the following paragraph which gives me reason for concern:
Your Mac Pro includes four drive bays, allowing you to configure it with
up to 8 terabytes of storage using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives, up
to 2 terabytes of storage using high-performance solid-state drives, or
any combination of each type of drive. Configure each drive bay
separately.
Does the phrase "using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives" mean that the Mac Pro will ONLY work with 3Gb/s drives or that it performs best with 3Gb/s drives?
I currently have two internal SATA 250/300 GB Maxtors (Maxtor 7Y250M0 and Maxtor 6B300S0... both are 7200 RPM but I don't know the data transfer speed). Ideally I would get a Mac Pro with a single 1 TB drive, move one or both of these older SATA drives to the new computer, one temporarily and the other permanently in order to transfer data and Apps to the new machine. If this is not possible then the new machine will need to wait until after I get a new larger FW external drive to use as a data transfer medium (I had planned to do that anyhow). I need to do some advance planning for this so I need to know what to expect in advance. I noticed this possible wording ambiguity on Apple's description of the Mac Pro long ago, but now I need to find out the answer for sure. Apple, you need to be more specific with your words.
Can anybody answer this question for me?
My second question regards display connectors. Does the standard (no bucks added) display card include a standard DVI connector or only the newer Mini-DVI connectors. I think I see a standard DVI connector in the low res picture of the back of the Mac Pro but am unsure. My 5 year old Apple display bit the dust a year ago and I had to replace it with an HP 2009m display (mumble grumble) which does use a standard DVI connector. A new Apple display is too rich for my blood so I plan to continue using the HP display for now and need to find out if I will need a display adapter to go with it.

For anyone who asks why I still run 10.3.9 on my G5, I can only answer response speed. New OS versions always act like a lead anchor on a machine with their added overhead and Tiger really does feel like a ball and chain tied to me... it just does not reaspond as fast as I do. I look forward to the speed of a new machine.

Any commercial sATA drive will do just fine. 7200 RPM is not a requirement.
WD "Green" drives have caused user complaints about "long delay until ready" when installed inside a Mac Pro, but are fine for backups.
You are making the leap from PowerPC to Intel Mac. Eventually, you should re-initialize your old drives to GUID partition table for best responsiveness.
Migrating your System will not be possible. Use the pre-installed System or Install a new System on a GUID-partitioned drive with the release DVD in the box.
Migrating your Applications is a Bad Idea. You should plan on re-installing all your third-party Applications from their release discs.

As you have a 1st gen MBPO, I'd go with a DVI to VGA converter, as per http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8754G/A
If you want sound, you'll either want a 3.5mm stereo to RCA / Phono stereo lead also, similar to this:

You can find the specs for your system at http://support.apple.com/specs/#powerbook . I think you'll find that PB 15" came with a DVI connector, not mini-DVI.

DVI connectors are different

I have a G5 power MAC with a 23" cinema display, connected to the DVI connector on the left (as viewed from the back).
I just purchased a nice 19" no-name monitor that has a DVI port (as well as a VGA connector) at a great price and purchased a 5' extension so that it could reach the PowerMac. WoW, now I can have my application spread accross 2 displays---BUT , I see that the other DVI connector is DIFFERENT!!. It has a bigger shell and does not use screws to secure it and the dvi cable will not connect! What gives??? Other than that, the connector looks the same.
Is this for a special type of monitor???, do i need an adapter??

The other one you're seeing is Apple's proprietary ADC connector (which they no longer use). You'll need to find an ADC to DVI connector (or an ADC to VGA connector) to use your other monitor.

Clear enclosure 23" cinema display with DVi connector?

Hi all,
I went to a local Mac store (Not Apple) where I was shown a supposedly 23" HD cinema display (clear enclosure) with a DVI CONNECTOR directly built in. I was under the impression that all clear enclosure versions natively came with the ADC connector and that if DVI was warranted, a converted was necessary. To my surprise, Apple apparently made two clear enclosure versions, both ADC and DVI. I've verified under the spec. area of this site. But, there were no 23" clear enclosure with DVI, except of course, the current 23 version which is the aluminum. So, was the more likely scenario that this rep. had shown me a 22 with DVI or is there really a 23 version with DVI. I was convinced at the time myself that it was a 23 clear enclosure version with a DVI connector. I saw with my own eyes that this display did not have a converter connected and it looked like the 23 as opposed to a 22. The 22 & 23 looks so similar and can be mistaken for each other. One of the ways of identifying readily is that the 22 has the power/brightness controls near the bottom right of the casing. Could someone confirm either way. Thanks!

I agree that the rep probably showed you a 22" DVI model. See page 8 of the 22" Cinema Display Manual for the cabling of the display.
You will see the DVI version of the Cinema Display listed in this article. The article was put out prior to the Aluminum housed ACD release.

Should I use a VGA or DVI connector?

I have recently bought a Samsung 22" LCD SyncMaster 2232BW to add as a second display to my macbook.
I have the choice to hook it up through the VGA or DVI connector. At present im using the apple mini DVI to VGA connector and the quality looks good. I was wondering if I were to swap it over to DVI whether or not I would see an marked improvement.
I would like to know the pro's and cons of both VGA and DVI and whether it's worth swapping my apple VGA connector for the apple mini DVI to DVI and using the DVI cables also supplied with the monitor.

I just replaced my 19 inch dead lcd with a 22-inch Westinghouse L2210NW. ok, not the most recognizable name in the industry, but specs are good, and price at Best Buy ($229.), I couldn't resist. Bought an additional 3 yr service policy(29.99) figure I'm covered for 4 years-much better than the 14 month old 1 year warranty monitor I just replaced.

I am using the Mac DVI ->VGA adapter/connector. A few reviews I have read about this monitor stated changing to DVI even more impressionable-I can't hardly imagine. SO: Please advise or confirm: I need only replace the cable/vga came with the monitor: out the box it readily plugs into the white adapter at the back of my Mac Mini. So my new DVI cable should plug directly into my Mac, not needing the converter? Can you give me a ball-park figure on what this new cable should cost. And finally, it is worth it?

Yes. The adapter just provides the digital video signals. You still need to plug in the power, USB, and FireWire (if needed) cables from the display
All the documentation seems to be restricted to G4s,
When the adapter came out the only ADC computers were G4s. They haven't updated the documentation, but it will work on a G5.
