Which is better way to place images ?

I'm making huge catalog with a lot of products.
Which way is the proper way or better way to do?
Make individual product image paste on photoshop and bring in to InDesign and lay images (re-sizing smaller, not bigger) and text out.
or
Make multiple product images paste on one photoshop document which size to catalog size already, then place into InDesign.
My thought is, if you don't make images bigger in InDesign, it's easier to make individual images and bring to InDesign and playing around for layout.

placing many images can go fast, select all (or a part) images you like to import, before placing the first image, hold down COMMAND-SHIFT key, now you can draw a grid for the images, when you are drawing that grid, you can use the UP, DOWN, LEFT or RIGHT keys to increase or decrease the number of collums and/or rows. That way you can place images at high speed.

    Which one have better speed, database system or file system ?Database is better all around. It is not just a question of speed. It is a question of storage, security, flexibility, scalability, robustness and so on.
    If you use ASM and raw devices from a storage array or SAN, how do you get o/s files onto that? (requires a file system on the SAN/array LUNs)
    If it is inside the database, database security, concurrency and consistency apply to the image. Outside the database? How do you control who has access? Prevent someone with slippery fingers from accidentally deleting/renaming/moving images files? How do you backup up the image data with the image attribute data in the database?
    Having all this inside the database, part of the database, managed by the database, provides you with more flexibility, robustness, and security. After all a RDBMS is a data management system - it is designed for managing data. And that includes managing binary data.
    As for speed. Reading a 24MB image is reading 24MB worth of data. Whether that data is read by process A from disk1, or process B from disk2 - the amount of data is the same. So if you want faster I/O, then use faster disks. If disk1 is faster, process A will perform better reading the image than process B. If disk2 is faster, the roles are reversed.
    So I/O speed is not a direct function of process A or process B. It is a direct function of the I/O storage and fabric layer. Yes, a process's method of I/O can make a difference (e.g. using block reads not aligned with the physical blocks on disk). But this is more a configuration issue than process doing badly designed I/O calls.
    So the speed question is a bit loaded as it has more to do with the architecture and design of the I/O system - and less to do with the process doing that I/O. You can have a highly optimised I/O process doing poorly using an old and slow I/O layer, and poorly written I/O process doing pretty well on a SSD I/O layer.
    Databases like Oracle is designed for dealing with data - and thus effectively dealing with I/O. Lots of it. For lots of data. So I/O process design is not a consideration. The database processes will use the I/O layer as optimally as possible and as configured.

  • Most efficient way to place images

    I am composing a Catalog with a lot of images along with the text.  The source images are often not square (perfectly vertical, portrait).  I also want to add a thin line frame around each one in InDesign to spurce up the look.  I'm spending a lot of time in Photoshop straightening images, because rotating in Indesign to get the image straight results in a non-straight frame.
    Should I create a small library of frames that I place, then place non-straight images in them (and how do I do that) and rotate in InDesign?  Etc?
    What would be the most efficient way to do this?
    Thanks

    To tag onto what Peter said, when you click on the image with the Direct Selection tool you can also use the up and down arrow in the rotation Dialog (where you enter the angle, at the top) to easily change the rotation.
    Also, when you place images in InDesign you can select a number of images at once and continually click the document (or image frame) and place all the images you selected to import. To clarify, you can have a whole bunch of empty image frames on the page then go to file > place and select all your images, then continually click and place them inside each empty frame.

  • What's the best way to place images in table cells?

    I'm working on a basic tooling catalog/list using a table for all of the information.  One of the columns is for an image of the tool.  Is there a way to place each image in a cell and have it resized to fit the cell dimensions (including my text inset settings)?  I'm using CS4 and the images are all tiff files, although I also have psd files of each.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Table cells don't adjust automatically except in the vertical direction when set to "at least" some dimension, and I suspect you don't really want that anyway. Keep in mind that column width is constant through the whole table, so fitting the cell to the largest image is going to give you a giant coumn width that isn't used for smaller product shots in the same table.
    What about making an image frame the size you want, and setting the fitting options to fit proportionally? Copy that frame and paste into the cell, then place the image in the frame.

    See Window#setExtendedState. And for which one looks better - that's a matter of taste, really.

  • Which is better way of creating BSP iView

    Hi Experts,
    Can you please let me know how I can create BSP iView.
    Approach 1:
    One of creating BSP iView is as follows:
    For this we have to say Create iView --> Select iView Template --> Select SAP BSP iView
    Set following properties:
    System: somesystem
    Business Server Page (BSP) Application: ztest
    Start Page: ztest.htm
    Now we can call the iView in Page etc.
    Approach 2:
    Other way of creating BSP iView is that we can create URL for BPS application.
    For this we should login into SAP BW. Go to transaction code bps_wb and then open the Web Interface. Then we can go to Edit --> Display in external browser.
    Some link will appear. The link will look like:
    http://mycompany:1080/sap(bD1lbiZjPTEwMCZkPW1pbiZpPTEmcz1TSUQlM2FBTk9OJTNhYmF1YzMzZzBfT0JTXzAwJTNhaXg3Sk5aVTV4RDVFWWtKQmFwWGMxTGlSRElJWGphc2x5aEQwYW9jRy1BVFQ=)/bc/bsp/sap/ztest/ztest.htm?bps-design_messages=X
    We can create URL iView. We can directly provide this link in the URL iView.
    I want to know which approach is correct and why? In second apprach we are not providing the details like
    System: somesystem
    Business Server Page (BSP) Application: ztest
    Start Page: ztest.htm
    From the link, iView finds out the entire detail.
    Pls help me.
    Thanks

    Hi Dagfinn,
    Thanks a lot. Can you please help me with answer of following question:
    How to call SAP BSP iView from a  HTML page hyperlink
    The question is as below:
    In my project we have URL iView.
    This iView calls a HTML page stored in KM.
    HTML page has one hyperlink.
    This hyperlink of the HTML page should point to a SAP BSP iView.
    When the user will click on HTML page hyperlink, SAP BSP iView should get open.
    How we can do it?
    We have created SAP BSP iView in following way.
    Create iView --> Select iView Template --> Select SAP BSP iView
    Set following properties:
    System: somesystem
    Business Server Page (BSP) Application: ztest
    Start Page: ztest.htm

  • Upgrade, migrating oracle application. Which is better way?

    We have oracle application 11.5.5 run on Window NT 4 Server.
    We want to upgrade Window NT4 to Window 2000 advanced Server or Window 2003 advanced Server.
    We also want to upgrade oracle application 11.5.5 to 11.5.9 or 11.5.10.
    Since we have a new server, we also want to deploy new production on the new box.
    How should we go about to accomplish this task?
    Is there any good documentation out there we can use to accomplish this task?
    Thank.

    hi
    On windows
    you have to do a upgrade on the server which is having 11.5.4 apply autoconfig enabled patch on it. Ones the autoconfig is enabled then you can start category wise approach and start from cate gory 1 ... in cate gory 2 you have to run rapid install(on new fresh server which is having windows2003) with the option upgrade file system ...thenin thord cate gory you have to upgrade the DB on old server then traanfer the dbf file to the location created by rapid install in category 2 and create the control file and complete the remaining step of category 3 and cateogry 4 ...

  • Option in desktop mac / which is better?

    My husband plays games on his desk top with 17in screen which is not MAC. For his birthday I thought it would be good to give him a 22-27in monitor as I can get a good one for about low $200.00. Than I thought, why not just get a (used) mini mac to go with it. Than I thought again and started wondering is it better to go with used mini and new flat monitor or get a used imac?
    I'm pretty sure that I can get the used mini and new monitor for cheaper price but I really like the wide screen mac monitors... My husband likes to play games, use itunes, burn DVD, Photo... and ect....
    Can anyone tell me which is better way to go and what exactly I should be looking at? I need model number and you need to draw me a picture what I should be pricing or I won't understand...
    Thanks for helping the girl who rides the short bus when it comes to computers.

    Its me... again... to continue the last question, I just read that mac mini is not good for game playing??? because most of the games need xp or some other thing that mac doesn't have?? can u confirm?

  • Better way of populating Z-Table....

    Hi
    I am loading delta from Customer data file to BI DSO & also populating this delta records to some Z-Table (say: Shadow Table) like follows:
    1st way)
    Loopu2026
      u2026..
      u2026u2026
    MODIFY ZMD_MANUFACTURER FROM WA_SHADOW.
    Endloop.
    2ND Way) We can also follow this method instead of following above mentioned 1st way as:
    Loopu2026u2026
         u2026u2026u2026u2026.
         u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026
         APPEND WA_SHADOW TO ITAB_SHADOW.
    ENDLOOP.
    MODIFY ZMD_MANUFACTURER FROM TABLE ITAB_SHADOW.
    Which is better way in terms of Performance?
    Thanks...

    Hi Harpal,
    The 2nd way should be good in terms of performs and the simple reason behind that is, in first approach everytime you want to update record it will hit to database but in second approach it will hit database only once.
    So 2nd approach would be better from perfromance point of view.

  • Best way to place lots of images into one

    Hello,
    I have made a Javascript script that loops between 20.000+ images and puts them into a main image. Code is:
    var sampleDocToOpen = File('~/a/'+(l+startF)+'/'+(i+start)+'.png')
    open (sampleDocToOpen)
    app.activeDocument.selection.selectAll()
    app.activeDocument.selection.copy()
    app.activeDocument.close()
    app.documents[0]
    app.activeDocument.paste()
    it works, but it is extremely slow (I also have the main image flattened every 30-40 images to make it quicker).
    So i tried to place the images directly into the main image via:
    function placeFile(file) {
         var desc = new ActionDescriptor();
         desc.putPath( charIDToTypeID('null'), file );
         desc.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID('FTcs'), charIDToTypeID('QCSt'), charIDToTypeID('Qcsa') );
             var offsetDesc = new ActionDescriptor();
             offsetDesc.putUnitDouble( charIDToTypeID('Hrzn'), charIDToTypeID('#Pxl'), 0.000000 );
             offsetDesc.putUnitDouble( charIDToTypeID('Vrtc'), charIDToTypeID('#Pxl'), 0.000000 );
         desc.putObject( charIDToTypeID('Ofst'), charIDToTypeID('Ofst'), offsetDesc );
         executeAction( charIDToTypeID('Plc '), desc, DialogModes.NO );
    But after opening few images it says that "scratch disks are full", and I verify that it is true since almost 500GB of the HD are used by the application... Images are 512x512 each, thus the resulting image main image is 83456x63488.
    Is there a faster way I could try to use??
    Thanks a lot!

    And also realize what is going on. First your using a script. Though a script is a program with logic its source code which is not compiled into machine code its has to be intrepided into machine executable code as the script processor  iterate through your buffered source code. This itself takes time. Then you have to understand what is happening in your loop and what Photoshop has to do once the Script code can be executed.  Using Copy and Paste or Place requires Photoshop to open and read in 20,000 encoded jpeg images files and one way or the other decode the encoded image for rendering to copy it to the Clipboard  or render the embedded smart object copy into the Smart Object Layer. Then there is the other code that you have to add canvas and distribute the images layers across the canvas. Intrepiding the script source code some 20,0000 times is something like doing 20,000 compiles where the source code is only read in once but is turned into machine executable code 20,0000 times.  To process 20,000 encoded images files using a full feature image Editor program and a scripting process is going to take a long tome and require a lot of machine resources.  If you want a fast solution you will need custom compiled program designed for your process. Still reading and decoding 20,000 small jpeg image files is going to take some time and require quite a bit of machine resources. It might be better to use an image file format that doesn't use compression and complex image encoding to cut down on the amount of processing reqruired .

  • Which yields better quality images?

    Which yields better quality images?
    If I "send" my slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD? Or if I start in iDVD and import a slideshow from iPhoto?

    That’s the same thing.
    The problem is that iPhoto needs to make a movie of the slideshow to export. This inevitably involves compression. Then, when iDVD prepares the movie for burning, it also compresses. Many folks find the quality drop off too great when the material is doubly compressd.
    One solution is to create the Slideshow in iDVD, though that has limitations too - no Ken Burns effect, fo instance. But there’s only one layer of compression.
    Another way is to create the Movie in +as high a quality as possible+. Some ways to do this: Export the slideshow from iPhoto using the new high quality options. Alternatively, use another app that has more export options - PhotoToMovie, Final Cut Express, perhaps even iMovie HD - to get a high quality movie, and so minimise the impact of the compression.

  • Which is better? Extracting images from directories or from database?

    Good day,
    I would like to start a discussion on extracting image (binary data) from a relational database. Although some might say that extracting image from directories is a better approach, I m still sceptic on that implementation.
    My argument towards this is based on the reasonings below:
    1. Easier maintainence. - System Administrator can do backup from one place which is the database.
    2. High level of security - can anyone tell me how easy it is to hack into a database server?
    3. image is not dependent on file structure - no more worries about broken links because some one might mistakenly change the directory structure. If there needs to be a change, it will be handle efficiently by the database server.
    The intention of my question is to find out :
    1. Why is taking image from a directory folder which resides on the web server is better than using the same approach from the database?
    2. How is this approach (taking image from directory) scalable if there is thousands of images and text that needs to be served?
    If anybody would be kind enough to reply, I would be most grateful.
    Thank You.
    Regards
    hatta

    Databases are typically more oriented towards text and number content than binary content, I believe. If you carry images in the database you will need to run them through your code and through your java server before they are displayed. If they are held in a directory they will be called from hrefs in the produced page, which means that they are served by your static server. This is quicker because no processing of the image is required. It also means the Database has to handle massively less data. Depending on the database this should be far quicker to query.
    It is worth noting that it is also quite difficult to actually change mime-types on a page to display a picture in the midst of HTML- the number of enquiries on these pages about this topic should be enough to illustrate this.
    If you give over controls of all the image file handling to your java system (which I do when I write sites like the one you describe) then the actual program knows where to put the images and automatically adds them to the database. The system administrator never needs to touch them. If they want a backup they save the database and the website directory. The second of those should be a standard administrative task anyway, so there is not a huge difference there. The danger of someone accidentally changing the directory structure is no greater than the danger of someone accidentally dropping a database table- it can be minimised by making sure your administrators are competent. Directory structures can be changed back, dropped tables are gone.
    The security claim is slightly negated because you still have to run a webserver. Every program you run on your server is vulnerable to attack but if you are serving web pages you will have a server program that is faster than a database for image handling. You are far more at risk from running FTP or Telnet on your server or (worst of all) trying to maintain IIS.
    The images in directory structure is more scalable because very large databases are more likely to become unstable and carrying a 50k image in every image field rather than 2 bytes of text will make the database roughly 25000 times larger. I have already mentioned the difference in serving methods which stands in favour of recycling images. A static site will be faster than a dynamic site of equivalent size, so where you can, take advantage of that.

    I was wondering it the life of the battery would last longer if you let the battery run down all the way and then charge it? Or to charge it whenever you have the opportunity even if it doesn't have a low battery?  Which is better for the life of the battery and prolong the life of the battery?

    I've had a iPhone 4s since March 2012, and it's battery is pretty useless now.  I was using the app Battery Doctor (Battery Saver, Battery Life) by Beijing Kingsoft Internet Security software, which encourages the user to charge more often, whenever battery life drops below 100% full and greater than 20% full, and gives ratings according to the number of full, partial & overcharges done, but I'm concerned that charging like that actually results in worse battery life??
