Which MacBook should I get?

Hi,
I'm deciding to get a MacBook, but I'm not sure which one to get, all I know is that I want one of the 13 inch ones.
I'm going to be use it for things like Skype, Facebook, YouTube, ect... And occasionally go on photoshop, and other program's like that.
I like the MacBook Air because of how thin it is, and that also it has flash storage, meaning it will be quicker to boot up, and load applications, and also will be much quieter than normal laptops. And also that the screen resolution is better that the Pro's.
I like the MacBook Pro because it is I think 2.4 GHz, £99 cheaper than the Air, but I'm not too keen oh how big it is, and that it's not flash storage.
What do you think would be better for me? And why?
Also just to let you know I'm 16 and in school.
Thanks :)

a macbook pro is more powerful and upgrading the ram and hard drive is very easy.  You can order a MacBook Pro with a regular hard drive and upgrade to flash storage at a later date when solid state drives drop in price.

  • Which Macbook should i get help

    Hello guys,
I finally want to buy a MacBook but i have a big problem because i dont  know which version to get. I can only afford one of those 3
    First would be a
    11 2gb Ram 64gb SSD from 2011
    11 4gb 128gb SSD Late 2010
    or a 13 2gb 128 SSD from Late 2010
Now the Problem is i love the 13.3" screen its perfect for me and im not  sure if 11 would be enough. But on the other hand i dont know if 2gb  Ram would be enough. I want to watch Videos and do some surfing and  maybe use Word and all that good stuff.
But im not really sure which to get all 3 have their benefits but i love the bigger screen.
I cant afford another one those are my limit. I hope you guys can help  me. Oh and by the way i would like to use the Macbook for around 3 to 4  years because i have to go study abroad.
    Thanks

I have a 2010 Macbook Air with 2GB of RAM and i use it all the time.
I have mountain lion running and i can run several apps at the same time with no issues.
If you do some video editing and heavy photoshop use - i suggest you get the 11 Inch with 4GB of RAM.
if however, you will use it for light duty stuff - the 2GB 2010 13 Inch will do.
see image below of what i have running in the background with my 2010 13 Inch Macbook Air with 2GB of RAM

  • Which MacBook is worth getting?

Hello. I'm planning to go to university and I need to get a new laptop. I definitely don't want a Windows laptop, they do not appeal to me at all. I was thinking of a MacBook, but which MacBook should I go for?
I don't want a small screen notebook, ideally i would want a 15" MacBook Pro. In university I would only need iTunes, word processing (my degree is heavily focused on languages), slideshows and so on. Is a MacBook Pro too much for what I need or would I be better going for a MacBook Air. I don't mind about the size or weight of the notebooks, that doesn't bother me. Also, I would need the laptop to take notes in class. The laptop would be heavily used for coursework or assignments and it would do me for at least four years.
Memory isn't a big issue to me either. What is your recommendation?

if size and weight is not an issue and you want a 15" screen, go with the 15" pro
nothing wrong with being too powerful, better than buying something thats not powerful enough

Depends on how you want to use it. Flash storage on the newer macbook and macbook air are built in. A macbook air is the most light weight and a very good machine. It will do all you want it to do unless you are running some very intensive programs. If you go to the apple store on line you can compare  the different macbook pro" and macbook Air's.

If you also want to use it as a watch and like the clip get the 6th Generation.
If you want to have a bigger screen, watch videos, and use Bluetooth without a dongle get the 7th Generation.

  • What MacBook should I get??

What MacBook should I get? I want a MacBook this year and I know costs but nothing extremely expensive. I usually have 5 - 6 tabs open, listen to a lot of music, play disc games and occasionally photo edit and those sorts of things. But I don't know what MacBook to get because im not a computer savvy person plus there is a lot of choice so any help is greatly appreciated!

There is no answer to your question (that makes sense) since usage - even of the same applications - varies widely.
As a general thought, more memory is happiness. The screen size is a personal preference. Larger is nice, but I find my 13" screen is quite satisfactory.

  • Aspiring Photographer, Which MacBook should I buy?

I'm looking for which MacBook I should buy (Air vs. Pro vs. Retina; 13" vs. 15"). I'm aspiring to become a photographer and hopefully get to travel around the world. I don't care at all about weight of the MacBook; if I have to lug it around, then I will. I just wish for it to have enough battery life that'll get me through the day (maybe a movie or two for plane rides), fast, great screen resolution, and quite a lot of memory to store my photos as well as editing them. I am making the switch from a Windows PC and this will be the second Apple product I will have ever purchased (first being an iPod Touch). I am in no hurry to buy one and price will definitely be taken into consideration. Duly note that I don't speak 'computer', so as much as possible I request that suggestions and comparisions be typed in simpler terms. Thank you for help and the time it took for you to read/respond to my question ^-^. Have a wonderful day ^-^.

The MacBook Air is still my favourite. It has the newest features, and its battery life and light weight are two important features the others can't match.
The Retina display is undeniably gorgeous, but that's the extent of its appeal. The MBA's display is very sharp and more than adequate for every imaginable purpose. Everyone who picks up my MBAs remark on how light they are. That doesn't surprise me any more, but it is the one Mac I use most often, probably owing to its portability. I can count on at least three days of battery life during occasional use. Configured the way you indicate, it will almost certainly suffice for the duration of your undergraduate work and is unlikely to become obsolete for years thereafter.

  • Which Macbook (Pro) to get...

I am looking for a laptop for school and I have no idea which one to get. I am going to school for video game design so I will need to run windows. I am thinking about the Macbook because its small and cheap, but then I dont get an express slot or dual layer burner. I'm also contemplating a 15" Macbook pro because its powerfull and has a video card incase I want to play computer games. i am also contemplating a 17". i think the large screen and resoulution will be nice along with the large HD and lots of RAM, but it's heavy and expensive. the thing is, about using the computer for gaming, i have an xbox 360 and am getting both a ps3 and wii, so i may not need it. it the video card the only downside to the macbook? also, is it powerful enough to play full HD? I know i asked a lot of questions, but any help would be excellent. My main question is what notebook would be best for me and what are some advantages or disadvantages of the different models? any help would be appreciated. thanks

the macbook is a huge increase over the ibook and even the powerbook and is close to the macbook pro as far as processing power for things like compression, etc. for what you are doing, however i would choose the macbook pro, because it has 256 MB of dedicated vram, whereas the macbook only has 64 and it's integrated. if you look at the benchmarks the macbook pro is at over 60 frames per second, while the macbook is only at around 18. the macbook would be a poor choice for gaming. other machines that are not apple machines are probably even better for gaming than the macbook pro, but that is about all they're good for.
the expresscard slot is great if you're going to use it, but it may not be a necessity, and because of the macbook pro's thin design, the dvd burner is a bit slow and does not support dual layer burning. i use it for small projects, but for full length and dual layer dvds, i have an external burner. note also that you can upgrade the regular macbook to add dvd burning capabilities. it is an option when you order it.
another advantage of the macbook pro over the macbook is the dual link dvi output and pci express architecture. if you need to hook up to an external display, not only will you be able to mirror your desktop, but you can extend it over two monitors as well. the macbook pro will also support all of apple's external displays, whereas the macbook only supports the small one. both machines play high definition well.
as far as hard drive and RAM, the macbook pro comes with more, but the macbooks are upgradeable to the same level as the macbook pro for hard drive size and RAM. the only difference is you can upgrade to a faster hard drive on the macbook pro.
so, overall, i would say that there are many more advantages to having a macbook pro if you are doing serious video or game design work. the macbook should be able to handle most of what you need, but i would be worried about not having powerful enough graphics.

  • Which iPad should I get? (iPad gen 3 vs mini)

Hi all, I've been saving up for an iPad for a while and am now considering which one to get. My first choice was the 32GB wifi/3G mini ($829NZD), but a refurbished gen 3 iPad with the same GB and connectivity specs ($715NZD) is slightly better for my budget... So now I'm a bit torn and need your help! Is the mini's size really worth $114 more? Its primary purposes would be PDF annotation and reading (most of my classes at my level and degree are shifting away from using textbooks and giving us PDF format, independent readings) as well as note taking in class with an attachable keyboard. I would also probably do some VERY light word processing on it, and plan to use it as an e-reader for books and comics, as well as the regular stuff like email and social networking. With those uses in mind, which would you recommend for me? Also, I don't mind that much about having the super latest model or not - as long as it will still support iOS updates for the next few years, which is one of my concerns about getting the 3rd gen iPad. Thanks in advance!

  • Which macbook should i buy 13 or 15?

i want to buy macbook pro.i m confused which macbook i have to buy.i m entering into ios application developing.
    i use my macbook pro
    1)iphone,ipad applications development.
    2)video editing.

    thanks in advance

If you're comfortable with the specs of the 13", and like the 13" form factor, then I see no reason why you shouldn't go with the 13".
While the 15" features more raw processing speed (quad-core processors rather than dual-core and a descrete graphics card that would speed up GPU-intensive tasks), I don't see in your list that you would actually need that type of power.
The 13" will run Xcode quite well and you should look into Apple's iOS Developer's membership for aids to hone your iOS programming skills.
    Good luck,

  • What macbook should i get for university (Computer Science major)?

I need a macbook for homework, school, programing, and possibally running windows 7 or 8 using bootcamp. I will not be gaming on this machine at all. I was stuck between the 13' macbook air with 8gb ram, 512gb storage, and i7 or i5 for $1849. Or the macbook pro 13'' i5, 8gb ram, and 512gb storage for the same price. I'm looking for decent battery life and good performance overall. keep in mind that i won't replace this laptop for 3-4 years. And is it really a big difference between the i5 and the i7 in the air and should i get 256gb or 512gb in the air if that is the outcome.

I just happened to google "macbook for computer science majors" and this is the first thread I found.  Weird Since All the students are at Univ of Waterloo. I know different school, but same city. http://www.studentawards.com/forum.aspx?g=posts&t=30988

  • I have a Macbook pro with Retina Display, and need to get bootcamp. Which one should I get so I can install Windows 7?

I have to have windows so I can use CAD and photoshop for my classes. Any suggestions?

Boot Camp Assistant is in your Utilities folder. You will have to purchase Windows somewhere. Preferred would be 64-bit Windows 7.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Which computer should I get?

    Hello,
I'm setting up to make my first independent movie, and I'm planning on using an Apple instead of a PC. So, my question is -- because I'm new to the Apple World -- should I go with a MacBook Pro or a G5?
Also, I'm using the Panasonic HVX-200.
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I was in pretty much the same spot as you are right now 18months ago, and I got loads of good advice on this forum. Hope you'll be just as lucky. So here's the little I can offer you:
yes, I'd definitely get more RAM, OSX tends to run a lot smoother when you don't starve it of RAM. On the G5s I'm working on, I've got 4.5GB each, which works great. Maybe you'd need less, if you're only editing on your Macs, but as soon as you have After Effects or Photoshop or DVD Studio, for example, open at the same time as Final Cut, you will certainly enjoy the fact that you've got more RAM.
I don't know what format you will be shooting and editing on, but bear in mind that while Final Cut takes all sorts of material (DV/SD/HD), you have at your disposal only the firewire port to get the stuff into your system and onto your harddrives. If you plan on using DigiBeta tapes, for example, you would then need a capture card to be able to capture the material and work with it.
In addition to that, you will need additional harddrives. Which is easy if you buy the G5 (and the QuadG5s are veeeeery powerful indeed.....), simply get an additional HD, which will work nicely with DV stuff and even on a simple level for 8bit SD. At least it did for me. If you go for the MacBook Pro, you will have to buy an external harddrive. One thing the guys on this forum will always tell you is to NEVER EVER use your harddrive where your system and your applications reside as the harddrive where you keep your captured material. Did I say never ever? Oh, I meant NEVER EVER EVER. Did it once, and I learnt my lesson.
And while I'm talking about harddrives, same applies as with the capture cards. For DV material, you don't need a super-fast RAID solution, a firewire HD does the job just as well. If you want to use SD or even HD material, then you need drives that are a lot faster.
Oh, and then you might consider getting a nice mixer, some speakers to monitor your audio, and maybe a tape deck.
Hm, gotta get back to work, hope this helps, let me know if you need more info.
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • Which one should I get 13inch or 15inch MBP

Hello everyone, I am about to make the switch from pc to a mac and I need help on which mac is best for me. I never had mac before, this is my first time. I am going to college. I will be using in college and using the mac for web surfing, itunes and doing homework.
Do they both 13inch and 15inch get very hot?
I don't know why Im lover with 15 but I am familiar in the differences with the 13 and 15 inch but cannot decide on which is best for me..........Any help or feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

web surfing, itunes and doing homework.
For doing that and being mobile a lot at school, I would go with the 13", or you may even consider a MacBook Air lighter weight.
They all heat up depending upon what you are doing, but just surfing (except watching video) and doing your homework (word processing), any of them should run quite cool.
