Which user for a contained database - SQL Server 2012
Hi,
if I've a contained db and I need to create an user for this db in order to porting this contained database to different servers inside the same domain, which type of user do I need to create?
For this user I don't want to apply any further configurations.
Any suggests to me, please?
That still doesn't parse to me... Lets break it down:
"...for the contained db to port to a server to another server in the same domain..."
I assume you mean "... from a server to another server...". The unclear thing here is exactly how you define "to port". For the database to be restoreable? Nothing has to be done. To not have orphaned users? Well, you don't get orphaned users for Windows
users, only SQL Server users. Is this Windows login already existing in the source database? Does it have permissions assigned for it that you need to keep. If so, why are we talking about crating a *new* users*? Many questions marks here...
Next part: "I need to create an user that doesn't require to accomplish any further user configurations"
Are we talking about creating a user for the purpose of performing the port? Or a user that is expected to use this database after this port? Or does this user exist already?
As for the "doesn't require to accomplish any further user configurations" part, I still don't understand this. Are you asking if all you have to do is to create this Windows user? Then the answer is possibly "yes", but it depends on your answers to my above
questions - i.e. a bigger picture of your scenario and what in the end you are trying to accomplish.

Moving to unicode datatype for an entire database - SQL Server 2012
Hi,
I've a SQL Server 2012 database with more tables having more char and varchar columns.
I'd like to change quickly char columns in nchar columns and varchar columns in nvarchar columns.
Is it possible to solve this issue, please? Many thanksHello,
Creating a script could do it quickly as shown in the following article:
http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2010/10/18/sql-server-change-column-datatypes/
But creating the scripts may take you some time.
You will find more options here:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/e7b70add-f390-45ee-8e3e-8ed6c6fa0f77/changing-data-type-to-the-fields-of-my-tables?forum=transactsql
Hope this helps.

This 3rd time I followed this link. But nothing new, same error.
Can you please tell me how to do follow, I cannt do the 1st step, how to change the local system to windows level account, vice-versa. It is shown mine as
Server Configuration Manager(Local)
From here I folllowed the steps ---[I cannt insert link/image :-(]
SQL 2008/R2 setup fails with "Wait on the database engine recovery handle failed"
If I right clicked on SQL Server Service, there is no option to change the account.
Hello,
Thanks for your patience, did you tried stesp mentioned in below article
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqljourney/archive/2012/03/16/sql-2008-r2-setup-fails-with-quot-wait-on-the-database-engine-recovery-handle-failed-quot.aspx
To resolve it, follow these steps:-
When the installation throws this error, click on OK and allow it to proceed. It will fail for Database Engine, but the SQL Server service should have
been created. Check the Services console.
If the service is present, perform the following steps:-
1. Go to SQL Server Configuration manager, right click on the SQL Server service, and change the service account (if it is local system, give
it a windows level account, and vice-versa). It might throw a WMI error but you will see the account getting updated anyway. If not, then use the Services console. Change the account for SQL Agent as well.
Use this link to change sql server service account
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345578.aspx
2. Next, try to start the service. It should come online.
3. However, you will not be able to log in to the SQL Server
4. Now stop the service and start it from the command prompt using -m -c -T3608 parameters.
5. Now try logging in to the server using admin connection from sqlcmd (sqlcmd admin:<server name>\<instance name> ...)
6. Once logged in, use the sp_addsrvrolemember '<domain\username>','sysadmin'.
Also add the builtin/administrators to the sysadmin role
7. Now stop the service from the command prompt and start it from SQL Server configuration manager
You should be able to log in to the server now.
Hope this helps someone.

" The job failed" in copying database SQL SERVER 2012
I'm trying to copy a database. When going through the Copy Database Wizard, I'm getting a Execute SQL Server Agent Job error. The error states " The job failed. Check the event log on the destination server for details". See below:
Performing operation
Add log for package (Success)
Add task for transferring database objects (Success)
Create package (Success)
Start SQL Server Agent Job (Success)
Execute SQL Server Agent Job (Error) Messages
The job failed. Check the event log on the destination server for details. (Copy Database Wizard)
I can't seem to find what causing this problem. Am I using the correct approach? I just need to copy this database. Thank in advance.Hi mohammad2050,
When using Copy Database Wizard, please make sure that the SQL Server Agent account or Integration Services Proxy account is a member of sysadmin fixed server role, and has access permission on both of source and target file system.
There is a blog about using SQL Server Copy Database Wizard for your reference .

SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013 (SSDT BI), link below, highlights the lack of support for SSIS projects using SQL Server 2012, VS 2013 and SSDT BI for VS 2013. I see there is a new version

According to the picture, it seems that we can use SSIS 2012 support is not included in SSDT-BI for VS 2013. And based on the previous versions, SSIS always different from SSRS, SSAS.
SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2012 supports versions of SQL Server as follows:
SSAS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSRS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSIS project can target only SQL 2012

Package migration from SSIS 2008 R2 to SQL server 2012
hi guys:
My company has decided to use Sql server 2012 for the database service, Integration service as well as analysis service
The first question is which tool I should install to run packages ? in SQL Server 2008 R2, I've installed BIDS which is inside the disk.
Also do I need to install any visual studio tools? I was under the impression that the BIDS 2008 was using kinda shell visual studio.
Thanks
Hui
--Currently using Reporting Service 2000; Visual Studio .NET 2003; Visual Source Safe SSIS 2008 SSAS 2008, SVN --Hi cat_ca,
To develop package in SQL Server 2012 Integration Services, we use the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT 2012) which can be installed from the SQL Server 2012 install media. The SSDT 2012 use Visual Studio 2010 shell by default and can be integrated into Visual
Studio 2010. By installing SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012, we can also integrate SSDT 2012 into Visual Studio 2012. However, SSDT 2012 cannot be integrated into Visual Studio 2013. As far as I know, the SSDT 2014 released
in SQL Server 2014 RTM will use the Visual Studio 2013 shell and can be integrated into Visual Studio 2013.

SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot System Service not visible in Central Administration
Hi all,
I want to test PowerPivot 2012 on the following configuration:
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Sharepoint 2010 - Enterprise edition
- SQL Server 2008 R2
- PowerPivot for Sharepoint<o:p></o:p>
As such, I downloaded SQL Server 2012 Evaluation and tried to upgrade SQL Server 2008 PowerPivot for Sharepoint instance to SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot
for Sharepoint. It didn't work as it's not possible to upgrade from Enterprise to Evaluation edition without a pid.
Next, I uninstalled the existing SQL Server 2008 PowerPivot for Sharepoint and I installed the SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for Sharepoint.
I started to configure PowerPivot in Central administration (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210609.aspx) , but I got stuck at the 2nd step Create and Configure a PowerPivot
Service Application (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210685.aspx) in Central Administration.
The problem is that both SQL Integration Service and SQL Server PowerPivot System service are not visible in Central administration > Manage
services on server; however they are visible and running in Windows Administrative Tools > Services.
Do you think the services are missing in Sharepoint Central Administration because the Sharepoint configuration database is on SQL Server 2008, while the Powerpivot instance is on SQL Server 2012 ?Thank you for the suggestion.
Meanwhile I have managed to solve the problem. What I've done:
- remove PowerPivot configuration using the Power Configuration Tool
- uninstall PowerPivot
- reinstall PowerPivot
- run PowerPivot Configuration Tool - I still got the parent service error
- remove PowerPivot configuration using the Power Configuration Tool
- run PowerPivot Configuration Tool - this time I received another error regarding the user that runs SQL Server Integration services
- check Sql Server Analysis Service account in Central Administration > Security > Service accountsManage service account - it seems that it was running under Local System account, although in Administrative Tools > Services it appeared to
be run by my domain account
- set a domain account for Sql Server Analysis Service in Central Administration
- run the PowerPivot Configuration Tool - this time it went smoothly.
The following url provides very useful info related to this type of issue: http://whitepages.unlimitedviz.com/2012/09/troubleshooting-and-removing-a-failed-installation-or-upgrade-of-powerpivot-for-sharepoint/ -

When I debug this I get the below error.
I saw some suggestions saying it won't work with Remote Desktop so directly connected the monitor to the server and tried to install but nothing works again. Let me know if I am doing anything wrong.

Hello, I am currently trying to install SQL Server 2012 and I'm having a problem. When I try to install a "New SQL Server stand alone installation..." from the SQL Server Installation Center, it gives me the error:
An error occurred during the installation of assembly
'Microsoft.VC80.ATL,version=8.0.50727.6229",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchit
ecture="x86",type"win32". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:
0x80070422.
After clicking "OK" I get this error:
Windows Installer file: C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Temp\SQL Server 2012
\Setup\1033_ENU_LP\x64\setup\sqlsupport_msi\SqlSupport.msi
Windows Installer log file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup
Bootstrap\Log\20131207_210515\SqlSupport_Cpu64_1_ComponentUpdate.log
After clicking "Retry" it loads for awhile and then shuts down and I get the "Setup Stopped Working" window. Does anyone know what the problem is? How can I finish installing the software? ThanksHello,
