  • Issues when trying to connect to Oracle database

    Hi
We have set up a linked server in SQL Server to connect to an Oracle database. We are using SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) on Windows Server 2008 and Oracle client 11g 11.02.00.01 connecting to Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production using UTF8.
Most tables are selectable without error, however, we got this error message for some:
    Msg 7347, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'OraOLEDB.Oracle' for linked server 'OurLinkedServer' returned data that does not match expected data length for column '[OraOLEDB.Oracle].Ourfieldname'. The (maximum) expected data length is 6, while the returned data length is 2.
This error message refers to a column of type char(3)
Will the characterset cause this error (I’ve read that SQL Server doesn’t support UTF8)?
If not, is there some other resolution that anyone can think of?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot!
    Tom

    Thank You for replying, Justin!
Yes, I can connect successfully to the database through other tools - at the moment I tried SQL*Plus, Net8 Easy Config and Schema Manager.
The Oracle client in the NT machine is 8.0.5.0.0. And unfortunately I do not know anything about the Oracle installation on this machine and at the moment I don't have that person near me too whom to ask also. But I think the installation was ok, because the connection through ODBC was working before the DB upgrade as far as I understood (sorry, again at the moment I don't know what was the previous version of DB. I will ask that information as soon as possible).
The main problem that bothers me at the moment is that I can't install 8.1.* series OraODBC driver with 8.0.5.0.0 Oracle Installer. I managed to install 8.0.6.6.0 version of the driver, but not the newer ones. As far as I've understood I have to upgrade the whole Oracle in the NT machine to upgrade that installer. Am I correct?

    Madis Priilinn

Note that this forum is for XE Beta, not EE.
Can you connect from some other client tool, such as sqlplus?
There's a {forum:id=178} forum that may be more suitable, if basic connectivity outside php works (i.e. issue is only php specific).

Find the hostname and service name of the database and use those values in the ORA_CON_DB constant.
Use 'lsnrctl status' on the database host to find the service name.
If you use a "tns" alias, you may need to create a tnsnames.ora file where PHP can access it.
Set the environment variable TNS_ADMIN (on Linux) to the directory containing the file.

    hello,
i installed the 11g edition and try to connect to it by sql developer. it didn't work, then I noticed there was an older version (10g) on the laptop. So i removed both, and installed the 11g version, but still it doesn't work.
My laptop runs on 32-bit windows 7 so I got the 32bit installer of 11g.
I checked several other threads, but didn't found a solution.

  • Forms 6i don't connect to Oracle Database 11g.

Hi people, I'm having a great problem, first I have a old server runing Red Hat with oracle 10g XE, this oracle XE is almost full, so I need to install Oracle Database 11g XE to get more space in another server, this another server is runing windows server 2003, I did it tow time in tow diferent server, a restore for migration is all right, the problem is when I try to connect forms6i to the database 11g XE, forms only closed without no error message...
    Some one has some help?
    Regards,

Also take a peek at some of the compatibility settings within 11g XE. You can get it to act like 10g XE regarding password caps vs lower case and such. We've been able to get a client/server forms/reports app (patch 18) to connect to and run just fine to 11g XE.

  • IBM DB2 to Oracle Database Migration Using SQL Developer

    Hi,
We are doing migration of the whole database from IBM DB2 8.2 which is running in WINDOWS to Oracle 11g Database in LINUX.
As part of pre-requisites we have installed the Oracle SQL Developer 4.0.1 (4.0.1.14.48) in Linux Server with JDK 1.7. Also Established a connection with Oracle Database.
    Questions:
    1) How can we enable the Third Party Database Connectivity in SQL Developer?
I have copied the files db2jcc.jar and db2jcc_license_cu.jar from the IBM DB2 (Windows) to Oracle (Linux)
    2) Will these JAR files are universal drivers? will these jar files will support in Linux platform?
    3) I got a DB2 full privileged schema name "assistdba", Shall i create a new user with the same name "assistdba" in the Oracle Database & grant DBA Privillege? (This is for Repository Creation)
    4) We have around 35GB of data in DB2, shall i proceed with ONLINE CAPTURE during the migration?
    5) Do you have any approx. estimation of Time to migrate a 35 GB of data?
    6) In-case of any issue during the migration activity, shall i get an support from Oracle Team (We have a Valid Support ID)?
    7) What are all the necessary Test Cases to confirm the status of VALID Migration?
Request you to share the relevant metalink documents!!!
Kindly guide me in-order to go-ahead with the successful migration.
    Thanks in Advance!!!

    Hi Klaus,
Continued with the above posts - Now we are doing another database migration from IBM DB2 to Oracle, which is very less of data (Eg: 20 Tables & 22 Indexes).
As like previous database migration, we have done the pre-requirement steps.
    DB Using SQL Developer
    Created Migration Repository
Connected with the created User in SQL Developer
    Captured the Source Database
    Converted Captured Model to Oracle
Before Translation Phase we have clicked on the "Proceed Summary"
Captured Database Objects & Converted Database Objects has been created under PROJECT section.
Here while checking the status of captured & converted database objects, It's showing the below chart as sample:

  • TNS-12535. Trying to connect to oracle database which is on bridget VM

I have a XP host running VMWare workstation 7 hosting a guest running Windows 2003 with Oracle database 9i (copy of my original physical server which I converted, also edited listener.ora and tnsnames.ora to IP of cloned server ). Network adapter is bridge so vmnic recived IP from DHCP and I can ping from my local network. Database is up and running. On my XP host I installed oracle client 11g and TNSPING is working and I can connect my application to database.
Problem is because I can't connect from another XP PC from my network (also isntalled oracle client and changed listener.ora and tnsnames.ora to IP of cloned server) . Error is TNS-12535 TNS:operation time out. Firewall in off on both side. PIng is working ok. Is it a problem with bridge connection?
Can anybody hel me with this problem?
    thanx in advance

Applets have restriction in accessing resources (for security reasons -> that's why you recieved SecurityException). But normally database access is done on server-side, so put that stuff in the servlet and then send the data to the applet.

    Hello!
I am trying to access an Oracle 8i database from an Applet. The problem is that the following exception is reported in IE 5.5

In Netscape no exception is shown in the Java Console but the Applet is not run anyway.
What do I have to do for the Applet to be able to connect to the database. The code for the Applet and the HTML file have been appended to this message.

But the results were the same. Can someone give me an advice what I should try from here, please?Let me know if you want more info. Many thanks,Seiji

Also, see this ARTICLE from the Tips & Tricks sub-forum, for things to look at with crashes and hangs. It covers the hardware, the OS and the software, and offers links for tuning up the system, and getting it ready for video editing. I know that there is a lot of material in there, but Neale has done a great job of putting things into a checklist, and offering links to other material.
That rec. is for use along with John T's links, which are a bit more specific to your burned DVD's.
    Good luck,

what is your operating system name and version?
    check
    $lsnrctl status
    if the listener is down
    start the listener
    $lsnrctl start
also check the database is up and running.
and try to connect with correct username, password, role (normal or sysdba) hostname or IP, port number, SID or service name.

  • Oracle Database Express Edition SQL Developer

    Hi all,
I did download the Oracle Database Express Edition from Oracle's website and am trying to create a new connection with the following info
    Connection Name: myconnection
    Username: ora21
    Password: ora21
    Hostname: localhost
    Port: 1521
    SID: orcl
Note: I even tried to use xe as the SID since it's a express edition but it keeps telling me test failed: ORA-01017: invalid/password; logon denied.
Could it be because it's an Express edition? Please advice as am a new DBA and am practising on my own

@Jim: thanks for the reply! I just created the user ora21 but when I try to creat the connection again it gives error ORA 01045 : user ORA21 lacks create session privilege; logon denied.

  • OraOLEDB.Oracle on x64 Win 2003 connect to Oracle 9.2 from SQL 2005 x64

I know this is an Oracle board but some of you may also support SQL Server like I do and I am hoping someone has had the pleasure of using OraOLEDB.Oracle on 64 bit.
I have a 64 bit SQL Server 2005 SP2 on a Windows 2003 x64. The developer said that he needed to use OLE to talk to Oracle so I went to Oracle and downloaded the 64 bit OraOLDDB driver as recommended in a MS note.
I can connect to Oracle via tnsping and using SQLPlus but I cannot create a linked db successfully.
The linked database errors off with >> Cannot initialize data source for OLE provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for Lined Server "X" (Microsoft SQL Server error: 7399) << (manually typed)
Here is the official OS, SQL Server, and Oracle client information:
The OS is Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 edition Service Pack 2 (NT 5.2 build 3790)
    The SQL Server 2005 9.0.3042 (x64) [from
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio    9.00.3042.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools        2005.090.3042.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.086.3959.00
    (srv03_sp2_rtm.070216-1710)
    Microsoft MSXML                                            2.6 3.0 6.0
    Microsoft Internet Explorer                              6.0.3790.3959
    Microsoft .NET Framework                             2.0.50727.42
    Operating System                                           5.2.3790
The OraOLEDB.Oracle driver shows that it is version 10.2.0.3
    Oracle "tnsping sid " works
    SQLPlus (ver 9.2) works
I have serveral linked databases to Oracle that I have built but all of them are 1- on SQL Server 2000 and 2- are 32 bit.  If anyone knows of any additional patches (Windows or Oracle) necessary to resolve this I would appreciate the information.  Also there are potential firewall issues though the fact that SQLPus can be used seems to rule this out, but if there are any ports associated with OLE I would like to check on them specifically.

Thank you for reminding me what I already knew but in my haste to post out a reply I had forgotten to consider looking at the provider properties.
Today I did and the linked database still failed. The though occurred to me a little later to delete and recreate the linked db and bingo I had a working linked database to Oracle. Now I have three of them and the developer should be working with them now.
This is the first time I ever had to change a provider property to get the provider to work. I would have thought that when the Oracle client install process registered the OLE provider with SQL Server 2005 it would be set with the proper defaults to work.
    Thanks again to everyone
