White background in InDesign

Hi,
I've drawn a white background on a page of a spread in an InDesign file by drawing a white rectangle. However, the rectangle doesn't cover the bleed even though I've brought it to the edge. I checked the transparency on the rectangle and it is 100%.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much for your time.

Once the frame edge is up against or past the bleed line then it's bleeding, enough.
The guides are set to be in front, that's why you see the bleed guide in front of the frame.
If you want the guides to be in the back then go to Preferences>Guides & Pasteboard and select the Guide Options to have Guides in Back.

I have a picture, placed in Illustrator, gave it that reflect look. I now want to put it in indesign. I get the white background. It works fine if I dont do any effects, but thats pretty much useless. This is what I have done in pictures:

I am sure I am missing something small, but its driving me nuts.

if this needs to eventually go to print, i'm going to make you do it the smart way
    go into illustrator
    file, export
    select .tif
and when the option comes up of screen medium or high, select high (300dpi)
    in indesign
    make a box
or whatever you want to place it in
    have the box selected
    and hit ctrl d
    or file: place
select the file you just exported
and if it is see through... the box... then make the fill color white
and you can play around with it all you like like a normal photo
make the fill color white: select the box that you place the picture in
and on the left there are two boxes under all the tools... a regular box and an outlined box
    click the regular one
and then on the right go to the swatch palette
    and click white
and then, if it looks weird
you should keep the picture box selected, right click, and then something like view quality or something. select high
also, when you export the illustrator doc, when you selected high 300dpi... you should also make sure it's CMYK not RGB
if it is going to press, tifs are better
    but if it's a jpeg
then you could have exported it at screen 72 dpi and it should be RGB

  • ID 5.5 Interact. PDF, cannot remove white background for Multi-States and buttons.

    Hi
I am working on an Interactive PDF Portfolio document. The problem I have is with Multi-State object feature with several buttons going to states that need to be exported as a SWF and imported back into InDesign 5.5. See, the background of my entire doc. is GREY, but when I import the SWF (as directed in Lynda.com videos correctly) and export the entire doc as Interactive PDF and view it in Adobe Acrobat Pro (version 10.1.1) is when all the trouble starts.
When I try to get rid of the WHITE background around the Multi-State objects and the buttons for them (using Select Object Tool and then control+click on it to change the Properties to Transparent Background Appearance) it does not change, even when I go forward and backward to the page.
Does the option of removing white background and making it transparent work only for Animation, but not Multi-State feature with buttons?
Can anyone suggest any other tecnique to create a nice slide show that works in Interactive PDF in ID CS5.5? Please..
    Sincerely,
    in need of help,
    Eve

I have 8 Multi-State objects in one stack on the left and the 8 buttons for each state in the stack on the right. The background of my document is dark grey. There is space inbetween Multi-State objects and the buttons that show the grey background. But after exporting as SWF the Multi-States together with the buttons and placing the SWF back in the PDF file, the space inbetween Multi-States and buttons that is supposed to show the grey background appears white. The problem is that I cannot even change this white background to transparent in Acrobat Pro, as well. I used to do that to animations and it worked, but not in this case.

  • How to design a "white" background in "black and white" ad on pink newsprint?

Long-time Indesigner here, but I have never had this dilemma before. Am designing a "black and white" newpaper ad for a major paper that has a pink section, i.e. it prints on pink newsprint. So I know this is black ink only, hence the "black and white"...but when the "white of regular newsprint is pink, I am getting stumped. I see in their rate card ads with a white background and black ink on top of the pink newsprint, which is what I want to do. The ad has facial tones of a major recording artist, and I do not want the highlights of her face going pink. So how to I ad a "white" layer underneath this ad? Deadline is now, so please reply ASAP. I have inquiries into the paper but it is the weekend and nobody is getting back to me.

Have they got a rate card: Check it! It may list a "white knockout advert" rate. I think:
that to overprint adverts onto pink is limiting i think its a separation (unless they only want/cater for 1 colour (black) ads) unlike yellow pages where the the standard directory colours are blue, green, red and black (err... obv because of the yellow paper...) yellow pages also offer white knockout adverts (then yellow available) and CMYK adverts.
So: you got to make sure that the advert is designed per spec: as you may know designing for newsprint is a lot more technical than gloss mags/sheet fed etc. You can always see in a newspaper who (designer) got it wrong.
All the info should be on the rate card: just check the CI too: as white knockout may be a lot more expensive.

  • Question about cutting out an object/removing white background

Hello,  I will start this by saying that I am very new to photoshop.  Any input will be appreciated.
What I am having trouble with is cutting a part of a picture out and the resulting white box that comes with the picture cutout.  Here is what I mean.
I make a selection out of a picture and cut it out from the backround, like for example cutting a person out of a photo.  I cut the person out with the magic wand and what remains is the transparent background.  I then save as psd.  I then place the image in INDesign into a publication with a background color of say blue and have no problems there with the cutout of the person blending into the blue background.  Once the psd image is placed in INDesign I can move the image around anywhere in the publication and it blends in perfectly.  So all is good up until this point.  Here is where my problem is.
Say I want to paste this image into a website, like a dreamweaver page and say the website page has a blue background.  I go to insert, image, and select the image psd to insert to the page.  What happens now is that the image inserts cutout person with a white background box and does not blend in with the blue background like I want.  The same thing happens if I insert as a gif or jpeg.
What am I missing here to paste the photo in and NOT have this annoying white background?
Thank you in advance for help!

In Photoshop use File > Save for Web & Devices and choose the GIF or the PNG format.
Note that the PNG has two versions, 8 bit  or 24 bit.
    Check the tranparency checkbox.
PNG (24 bit) provides the best result but also the largest file size.

  • White background with swf export

How can I apply a swf file created in InDesign into my web page without the white background coming with it. I'm using CS6.
I'm selecting transparent background when exporting. This is so annoying.

When you export the swf there should be an HTML container in the same destination folder. If you view that HTML file in a browser do you get what you expect?
If you are moving  the swf to another HTML page make sure the embed code parameters match. So in the boilerplate HTML ID creates the body tag and the embed parameters both have bgcolor as #999999:
When you move the swf make sure the div tag that encloses the swf has the same bcolor style color as the embed code's bgcolor

  • Print illustrations on white background;  eliminate gray square/rectangle behind images

working on desktop publishing project that will be printed in black white only. Have photoshop images that will be used as illustrations. when I put these images into InDesign and print them, a gray square/rectangle appears behind the image. I cannot eliminate the gray background. it is essential to the project that the images print directly on paper without the background gray. have tried several youtube video lessons but none has been completely successful yet.

I don't quite understand..........I'm using iwork pages, I click on shapes (square), I fill square with pink, I click on media (clips are stored there), picture of butterfly is than place within the pink square. However I would like it so that the picture of the butterfly layout only with the pink background. I don't want the white background. Am I missing something, or I'm just not being clear? Thanks for any further assistants.

  • When I place an EPS image it shows White background

    Hi
    Please help me urgent!!!!
    im using CS5
when i place an EPS image in Indesign, a white background shows.
First in PS, i clip mask the image and then flatten the image....I was told to do this.
the i save it as below:
    Save As: Photoshop EPS
    EPS OPTION
    Preview: Macintosh (8 bits/Pixels)
    Encoding: JPEG (High Quality)
    -  Include Halftone Screen (Not selected)
    -  Include Transfer Function (Not selected)
    -  Postcript Colour Management (Not selected)
    -  Include Vector Data (Cannot select)
    -  Image Interpolation (Not selected)
Then when I place the image in InDesign, i do the foll:
    I select Import Options:
    - Read Embedded OPI Links (not selected)
    - Apply Photoshop Clipping Path (Selected)
    Proxy Generation
    - Use TIFF or PICT Preview (Selected)
    - Rasterise the Postcript (not selected)
I still get the white background.
even when I change the Proxy Genertion to Rasterise the Postcript
Before I should save the image as a PSD (without Clipping Mask and dont flatten the image). the print would come out different colours...not the same. And apparentlt the printer should have a hard time printing the work. So i was told to clipp mask it, flattern the image and save as EPS.
Please help. Im deseperate and do not know what to do

Before I should save the image as a PSD (without Clipping Mask and dont flatten the image). the print would come out different colours...not the same.
Are you saying the printer can't get a .PSD to output, or a PSD's color is unpredictable? Sounds like your printer can print .PSDs, but you  have a color management problem. By different colors do you mean that the printed CMYK color values are different than what was in the placed PSD? If that's the case it may be that the PSD had a profile that conflicted with the InDesign document profile and you are getting unexpected color conversions somewhere in the workflow.

  • Transparent Muse menu background in InDesign DPS

    Ahoy hoy
I've been wrestling with this for hours now and no matter how close I come I can't quite fix the problem.
I've built an interactive navigation bar in Muse for a presentation designed in InDesign, using DPS. All CS6 and up to date. The nav bar sits over the top of the InDesign doc using Web Overlays.
However when I preview it, I constantly get a white background overlay as part of the Muse .html file.
I've included the following code in the Page Properties->Html for <head> box in the Muse file:
    <style>
    body{
    background:transparent !important;
    </style>
And have checked Transparent Background in Web Overlays in InDesign. So as far as I can see, I've tried everything to get the damn thing to be transparent - but it refuses.
I'm tearing my hair out here, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some tips for achieving transparency when using Edge animations. They may work as well in your situation since you are also using HTML in the article as an overlay:
Ok sorry for the delay in responding, we were doing investigation on our end. Getting transparency isn't easy at the moment, and we'll add a future work item to try and make it more straightforward. Until then:
If your background is a solid colour, draw a rectangle with the same colour as the background and put it on top of your placed .OAM file in InDesign.
If your background is more complicated than a solid colour, after placing the .OAM file use the "Send to Back" command to ensure the placed .OAM is behind your background content. Don't worry about the impact of this on the finished .folio: we'll still treat it as an overlay and put it over top of the background when rendering.
A few other tips when working with placed .OAM files:
Do not use a poster generated from Edge because their poster PNG does not contain transparency. Even if it did, it would still need to be disabled in InDesign.
The auto play setting in Edge is ignored in DPS. Autoplay has to be checked in the overlay panel.
"Use Transparent Background" also has to be checked in the overlay panel or the background will appear white.

  • White backgrounds printing grey

    Hello,
I am using CS 5.5 on a mac
Somehow, today I have managed to change the colour profiles and I can't figure out how to reset them. I don't usually adjust these profiles, but today I had printing problems with a HP printer and I adjusted them. This has made the problem much worse!
When I print, the white backgrounds print grey. If I close and open the document, it says not synchronised. I went to Bridge and selected one colour profile but it doesn't seem to have made much difference.
How can I get the settings back to how they were originally??!!
I can use Indesign at a novice level, but I rarely look under the bonnet!
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why does my illustration arrive with a white background?

After I've prepared a photo or illustration and place it into InDesign, it arrives with a white background. What must I do to change this?

    TedWiden wrote:

    Really? It offers...
save as tiff (not flattened!) in PS - note Save Transparency box in bottom half of TIFF Options Dialog box. Now ID will 'recognize' your transparent background.

  • Mysterious tool that gets rid of white backgrounds

Hi, I've been searching the net for an answer to this question...
At my last place of work I was using CS4 and often utilised an awesome tool in Indesign that effectively got rid of any white parts of an image with just a click. It wasn't permanent, it was more like an effect when the image got blended into whatever was behind it. Whites disapperared completely but other colours remained in various stages of transparency. It worked best for graphic black and white images when you wanted to get rid of a white background of an intricate illustration.
I didn't use Indesign for a few months and forgot what it was called, and now I use CS5 and can't find it. Please tell me that sounds familiar to someone because I'm starting to think I imagined the whole thing!
    Thanks,
    Jess

Hi Jess, try going to the effects panel and seeting it to "Multiply".  It is a bit of a mysterious tool, it sometimes works fine, and as you say sometimes doesn't work perfectly but has varying degrees of transparency, which depending on your POV is "working" or not.  I've enjoyed showing many people the seemingly magical effect it has when it does work though!

  • Best way to edit out a white background and make a transparent gif

I have an image I purchased but need to make it into a gif. It already has a white background but when I use the magic wand it chops little bits of the edge of the images up.
Is there an easier way of editing the white out of this background and making a transparent gif?
I am using Adobe Photoshop CS2
Image is attached to take a look.
Thanks, I appreciate any help with this.
    Nick

Worked perfect at a tolerance of 10, didn't know what that was for before
    Thanks!
