White Screen of Death on iPhone 3GS

My iPhone is stuck on white screen and i can't get rid of it.
My power button is broken so I can't fix it that way and when i try to restore it back to factory settings it works for a few seconds and then goes back to white screen of death.

This is most often due to faulty LCD display, and the fix is LCD replacement. Or if your iPhone still has Warranty or Apple Care coverage, replacement under warranty.

I have no idea what that is.  Can you elaborate?  Also, can you please let us know the troubleshooting steps you've taken (such as the ones recommended in the user guide) so that we don't waste our time giving you solutions that you've already tried?

  • Since updating the software on my iPhone 3gs it has developed the so called "white screen of death". The phone has not been dropped or damaged in anyway, the problem only developed after software upgrade. Rung apple and they were less than helpful

since updating my iphone 3gs software it has developed the so called "white screen of death" this happened immediately after software install. It has never been dropped or damaged. I have tried the solution which seems to pop up most of holding down the power button and the home button for 10 seconds but this hasnt helped at all. Tried ringing apple, who were less than helpful and disinterested as the phone is out of warranty. I am hoping there is a solution which doesnt mean shelling out for a new phone! any ideas?

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore.
    Try all of these.
    If these fail, then:

  • White screen of death iPhone 3GS 16gb

My iPhone 3GS displayed the White screen of death and was told to restore my phone but iTunes said there was a problem and now my iPhone won't turn on at all.

That happened to me once and the only was is to fix it is to use recovery mode.
    1. Connect your USB cable to your computer but NOT your iPhone.
    2. Turn your phone off.
    3. When your phone is off, press the home button and connect your iPhone to your computer.
    4. Your iPhone will turn on and keep pressing to the home button. iTunes logo will appear on your screen.
    5. You can start your restoration progress.
Hope this helps. Thats is how I saved my phone. It also seems to me that the phone you are using right now may had been jailbroken and stopped working.

  • IPhone white screen of death:  Anyone else?

    To All,
Since the iPhone 3.0 software update I have been experiencing the white screen of death (basically the screen turns completely white but the phone still works fine in the background. You just can't see anything) on my iPhone 3g. You can reset the phone and it will come back just fine but a minute or two later the white screen will appear again. After a few minutes of resetting or leaving it alone it will go away.
I would like to know if anyone else having this problem since the 3.0 release. Did you experience this problem before the 3.0 release? Also, does it happen when your battery is around 50% and then stops when your battery is at 20%. Just wondering if the battery is starting to fail and this is causing something in the iphone to freak out and pop the white screen.

  • IPhone recently rebuilt - "white screen of death"?

i recently rebuilt my other iPhone 3g and when i finished rebuilding it and slapped it all back together, i reformated it and it finished but upon reaching the "slide for emergency" screen the phone froze completely for about 10 minutes.
so i shut down the phone holding home and power and after restarting it again i got the "white screen of death" and now im stuck, help?

    Why was the phone disassembled?
The problem could be just about anything, you might be out of luck, and I doubt you will get a useful response here as we are iPhone users, not certified Apple techs.
Since you are probably out of luck with this iPhone maybe check some forums on repair sites to see if you can get an answer.

  • White Screen of Death: o2 refurb still in contract - immediate replacement?

Okay, so I have just got the dreaded white screen of death and have tried all the suggestions I've seen here: reset, forced reset, system reset - removed sim card and repeated but to no avail (phone works - can receive calls and connect to itunes okay).
I got this phone from o2 and it's 10 months into an 18 month contract. It was a £99 refurb (it looked brand new).
My question is what's the best procedure?
Should I take it to my closest o2 store, will they replace it there and then? Should I take it to the Apple store.
Anybody have experience of doing this - any suggestions?

Deal with the experts and go to an Apple shop after you've made an appointment with the Genius Bar (or you may be lucky and just walk in to be served). They will have a quick look at the phone and give you a refurb replacement straight away if it is found to be faulty. I've had two replacements over the past 18mths (Original iPhone & 3GS) and the service is excellent.

  • White Screen of Death. Need a more in-depth help.

My iPod Nano (6th Gen) has a white screen. The internet calls it the white screen of death. I read a lot of troubleshoots that tells me to do a hard reset. Unfortunately, I am stuck in the part where I have to wait for the Apple logo to come out after holding the Sleep/Wake + Volume Down buttons.
I also tried restoring it using iTunes, but the result is still the same; white screen of death.
Is there anything else I can do to fix this problem?

  • White Screen of Death Questions [PLEASE HELP!]

If someone actually cares about my issue, they will read all of the following. Let's see how many of you are out here and how many just want to answer simple short questions for reputation.
Okay, so I've ran into my first ever iPod Touch issue. I've never owned an iPhone, but I have had an iPod in the past and know a bit about them. I'm going to be 100% honest and I need a serious answer because I'm upset and angry. If anyone can be bothered to read the following, THANK YOU. If anyone could help me out in any way by giving me suggestions/tips and/or a solution, THANK YOU. But anything that can help is appreciated.
I had my board shorts on when this ocurred. I went to the toilet, doing my own business. I had my iPod Touch in my bank pocket which went to about half way down my thigh. The iPod Touch at the time was facing away from my thigh. Pulling down my pants, the iPod Touch hit the tiled floor. It hardly even hit the floor, all I heard was a little click and I realised it was my iPod. It was flat at the time, I picked it up and pressed the Home button immediately to ensure it was okay. It sort of lit up like a white background, but had a very low opacity. Since it was flat, I assumed it was normal.
Putting my iPod on charge right after my toilet break, I waited and waited for it to charge quickly enough for me to see the screen as I was a little worried not having seen that faded screen before. When the Apple logo was to appear, it gave me a lit up white screen. I was so confused as there were no marks AT ALL on my screen or any other part of the iPod.
NOTE: My iPod is still under warranty.
Did my research and came to the conclusion that it was the infamous 'White Screen of Death'. Where do I go from here? I have no clue!
I have important information such as a To Do list and my Contacts within the iPod. I NEED to retrieve this information. Is there any way I can do this?
I can still use the iPod, as if the screen were showing. Sounds are working, but there is just a blank, lit up white screen. Sometimes when I hold the Home button, On/Off button & the Volume Up buttoon all at the same time for ~10-20 seconds, the Apple logo comes up as if the screen was all fixed. 5 Seconds later, it goes all funny as if there were faded white lines and a faded white background but still being able to see the logo/screen. When the iPod loads, it just goes back to the lit up white screen.
Here's another odd thing to this, when I leave my iPod Touch sitting in a spot remotely, without touching it for a few hours, when I come back to it and hit the Home button, the iPod will begin to work fine as if nothing ever happened. No white screen, no nothing, just simply use it as I wish. I can even sometimes lock it, and then unclock it again with it still showing perfectly. However, when I tend to click the On/Off button after this happens, or if I just continue to use it for ~1 minute, it will eventually do the same as the above paragraph in second last sentence.
    This may be important:
    The iPod charges fine.
The iPod can be used with my computer and iTunes fine.
To sum it all up, everything can be done, including using the iPod, but with a lit up white screen.
Here are some questions I have for you guys:
Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
If they won't, what should I do?
How much would a replacement screen cost?
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
What could be the cause and why?
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
I need this resolved guys. I'm very upset and angry over the whole situation. If a little thump on the tiles like that (it's not like I dropped it or anything) can damage the screen that much, then this devices from Apple can't be very reliable. All I'm asking for is some genuine service/help to resolve my issue. If this can be done, I will be one VERY happy person.
    Daniel

Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
As stated above it is not covered by the warranty as it will be deemed accidental damage.  You can try explaining what happened to somebody at the Genius Bar and they may cut you some slack and replace it at no cost.  They might not though as Apple has started to really come down hard on eliminating replacing accidentally damaged iPods at no cost.
If they won't, what should I do?
Again, bring it into them anyways and explain what happened.  You have nothing to lose either way.  Otherwise, you really only have 2 other options.  Send it to a third party service center to have them take a look at it and possibly repair the iPod, or do some studying online and learn how to open up the device yourself and take a look.  There are some excellent step-by-step repair guides at http://www.ifixit.com/.
How much would a replacement screen cost?
This depends on where or how you have it repaired.  Here is Apple's repair pricing guide.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Third party repair centers will cost less and they'll actually swap out the bad part rather than just replace the entire iPod as Apple does.
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
If you have a warranty on it still, I wouldn't quite yet.  Take it to your local Apple store as explained above.  Otherwise, I would only if you feel comfortable working with small electronics and consider yourself handy with them.
What could be the cause and why?
As stated already, it could be a damaged or loose LCD ribbon cable or the LCD screen itself is damaged.  As to what exact component, there is no way to tell.
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Make a backup of the device in iTunes before taking or sending it in for service or before you decide to open it up (if you do happen to go that route).  See here what is included in the backup of the device.
    iTunes: About iOS backups
If you get a new or replacement device you can restore it from that backup.
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
As I have already stated numerous times, try taking it into your local Apple Store and see if there is anything can do for you such as swap it out.  Remember that they are not obligated to do so since the damage is technically accidental.  Be kind and polite when explaning what happened. You never know what could happen!

  • My ipod touch 4th gen. is stuck on white screen of death.

I recentally had dropped my ipod touch and when i picked it up it was stuck on the white screen of death. I tried to hard restart by holding down the power and home button at the same time, but the screen would only turn off then come right back on. Then i let the power drain. After it would no longer turn on i put it on the charger to find that the white screen would pop right back up. I didnt want to restore it but because its my only option i put it on my compute but itunes couldnt acess it because i had a passcode on it. is there a differnt way to restore it or fix it?  HELLLPPP MEEEE!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • White Screen of death caused during update of IOS 8.3

My Girlfriend was updating her iPhone 5 to iOS 8.3, A message came in during and she clicked on it. This in turn caused the phone to with to the white screen of death with the apple logo and upload bar paused. We've tried the usual hard re-set, also plugged into iTunes for a factory restore but then it asks for you to click allow on the phone. We can't do this because we can't see anything other than the apple logo.
Every now and then the screen flashes and shows you the home page. and using siri we managed to make a call.
Any help or advise  would be great.
    Very strange
    Thanks
    Jamie

DId she bother reading the message that appeared?
That is not a "White Screen of death". That is the reboot screen which the phone does while updating. You should have left it alone. Put the phone in Recovery mode and Restore it in iTunes.

  • White screen of death ipod touch 4g 32gb [dropped]

I got my ipod touch 4g 32gb for Christmas 2012, so it's still quite new, i accidently dropped it on the kitchen floor, screen face down [facebook app was currently running at the time] it had a silocon case on it so it wasn't as bad, when i pick up my ipod to check it was alright, the screen was all white [white screen of death].
I've tried 'home+lock screen buttons' & i have also tried 'Home+lock screen+ volume up buttons' this didn't work.
my friend suggested that i leave it to drain out and after 24 hours it died out, after about 20-30 mins i put it back on charge and the white screen came back up, i took it off and i'm leaving it for the night and will try it again tomorrow, does any one have any suggestions on other ways i could fix it, please help, thanks.

  • White Screen of Death (after restoring)

Guys, I've been dealing with the White Screen of Death, but it was always solved by turning it off/on, or restarting it.
The white screen used to happen when leaving my iPod for 3 days without using it.
However this time, 4 days passed without touching it, and I can't make it work.
I tried restoring it from a recent backup without success.
    What could I do?
Is it hardware or software problem?
