White text on red poster?

Hi, I am somewhat of a newbie at using InDesign and was wondering if someone could enlighten me about white text on a coloured background for print.  I have a poster that is red, with white text.  Do I need to do anything special besides just clicking on the white colour for my text?  I have heard people say "anything white that's on top of a colour needs to be knocked-out".  What does that mean?
Thank you!
J

Presuming you are printing the red background, not using red paper, just select [Paper] for the fill color of the text.
[Paper] though editable to simulate different colored paper stocks, is a special non-printing color that means "Knock out everything in this area and show the paper." Normally it appears as "white" because that's the default color (and we mostly print on white paper) but it will leave an area without ink on any color stock you use to print.
This is in contrast to the [None] swatch, which is the equivalent of putting a piece of clear acetate over the page. In areas where there is no other ink, the paper will show through, but any object behind a [None] fill will be completely visible -- not much good for text unless you are looking to do an outlined effect with a colored stroke and no fill.
If you are actually printing on red paper and want the text to be white you will need to print the job on a printing press and create a SPOT color swatch for white ink. Set the mode to CMYK and push all the sliders to 0. It will look white on screen. Either edit the [Paper] swatch to resemble the red of your paper stock (remember, [Paper] does not print) so you can see what things will look like, or add a non-printing red frame as a background. Remember that printing on colored paper is different from printing on white. All of your colors will be darker, with a reddish cast, on the finished piece, and it is very difficult to preview on the screen. Some colors may not show up at all.

  • Compund path or white text ona red background with a drop shadow

I have had business cards printed before with white text on a red background & the white wasn't 'punched out' (compound path) of the red so the white didn't print - the solution I was given was to create a compund path in illustrator before saving the PDF to punch the white out of the red & that worked fine ...
I now have dilema in that we want to get some flyers printed that have red starburst with white text over them but they also have a drop shadow behind the red star burst so if I punch the white text out of the startburst the drop shadow then appears through the starburst & the text is no longer white it is the drop shadow gradient from the background - i do not know how to get around this???

As long as your white text isn't set to overprint, you should be fine.  Just place your text in front of your starburst and look at your attributes panel to make sure that overprint fill and overprint stroke are not checked.
I'll bet if you go back and look at the file that gave you trouble in the past, overprint fill is checked.

  • Red text jagged White text smooth

I have created a text graphice in Motion which I have imported into FCP 7 as a .motn, however when I put the file on the timeline the text is severely jaggered.
I did a few tests with aspect ratios but no matter what adjutment I made, the text is still jaggered.
I decided to try the text in white instead of red and voila, the text is smooth.
I also tried two identical FCP standard text effects side by side, one red and one white and the probelm is the same.  It's as if FCP or the iMac cannot handle the text/font in red.
Anyone know why this might be?
The project is DVCPRO HD 720  (960x720 with a pixcel aspect ratio of 1.33).  I am running on an iMac The font is Arial Bold and the colour number is #FF0000

  • When I boot up my iMac I get a black screen with white text?

Hey guys wondering if anyone can help me. I installed mountain lion on my iMac the other day (2.8ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 24inch) and now when I turn it on I get this screen come up? Any one no of a way to fix it? It comes up black all this white text appears and at the end it says..
"If you wish to boot the system:
    exit
    :/ root #
You type exit and some more stuff comes up then the mac boots up, normal apple loading screen and your in?? I tried reinstalling mountain lion again and I had no luck. Still doing it? Its strange cause ML is running fine on my macbook air. If anyone has any suggestions I would be so grateful. Tell me this isnt the end of her?
Its not something silly like the keyboard and mouse aren't connecting? I leave them on all the time.
Heres a snap of the screen
    Thanks everyone

I did reset the PRAM, but don't think that worked.  I did find this on a blog on the web.  It worked for me
When I first read this post I did not realize that the Mac boots properly if you type "exit". It seems like perhaps your mac thinks you want to boot in "verbose" mode. Try this before doing a reinstall.

I got this info from here
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os-x-operating-system/280859-black-screen-white -text-startup.html
note: after it starts with the white text and black screen just type exit then hit return key and the computer will startup.  open the terminal after that and follow the ernie flores blog tip.

  • Problems with white text & transparency from Photoshop to Acrobat

    Hello Adobe Community!
What I am doing: I have a design I created in Photoshop CC. This design has a transparent background. I am attempting to save this as a PDF in photoshop so I am able to open it in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and print it on any color paper with only the design showing
Issue: When I open the saved PDF in Acrobat. I can only see my white text and a faint outline of part of my design, and not even all the rest of the design.
Then when I print it on color paper only the text shows up (with black stroke) on the paper along with my crop marks I made in the PS design. also when printed on color paper the text become transparent for some reason (Showing the paper color through the stroke), even though the text was made white and the PDF document shows white text
    Here are my steps:
    1.Create Design
    2.Save as..
3.Save as type - Photoshop PDF
    4.[] As a copy, unchecked
    5.[Check] Layers, Checked
    6.OK

Optimize for fast web preview, Checked
    View PDF after saving, Unchecked
    8.Compression -
    Compression: None
The rest of the settings are default.
    9.Open PDF from file
    10.Print with default settings
    11. Look at my butchered design in print
    12.Continued Frustration
So for some reason its like Acrobat is 'Ignoring' the white in my design? I'm so confused and I've been at this for hours, going through forum post after forum post and it seems like i'm doing everything correctly but I'm not getting anywhere with it.
I hope I added all necessary information, this is my first time posting here.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Would someone mind looking at the file? any help would be very much appreciated.
Note:Also I inverted the entire design making it all black instead of all white. followed same exact steps as above, and it printed perfectly. My confusion/frustration continues.

You wrote: . . . also when printed on color paper the text become transparent for some reason (Showing the paper color through the stroke), even though the text was made white and the PDF document shows white text.
You can't print white using an inkjet or laser printer because there isn't white ink or toner in your printer.
The white needed to come from your paper which should be white.
All printers and presses use CMYK inks or toner.
What is the definition of White? C=0, M=0, Y = 0, K=0  so not a single droplet of any ink is being placed on the paper in any area that is supposed to be white..
Of course the color of the paper will show in areas where there is no ink.
When you see something white that is printed on a dark paper it using a special spot color Opaque White on a offset press..
(there is a single inket model from Epson that can print an ink that appears to be white.  The model is $7,000 by the way. the [white] ink is $350, all the other inks are only $90)
    From the Epson website:
Epson UltraChrome HDR White Ink introduces an all-new Organic Hollow Resin Particle Technology, which forces light to randomly scatter, producing the illusion of seeing the color white.
Notice that even Epson only claims it produces the illusion of white.
The only way around this issue is to print on White paper and print the "color of the paper" everywhere else on the paper that doesn't have your design elements.

  • How do I prepare an Illustrator file for printing white text on a dark t-shirt?

There are no graphics, just text. The finished product is going to be white text on a red t-shirt.
What are the steps in preparing a file in Illustrator for this purpose, and what do I need to do before sending it off to the printer?
    Thanks.

I would call or email your printer and ask him or her the same question. There are a number of ways to indicate white ink, it would be good to know their preference. My guess is they will ask you to supply a PDF with black type and indicate somewhere that it's to print in white ink. They might prefer an .eps file. An illustration of a red T-shirt with white type in the desired location and size would also help insure you get what you want.

  • Laserjet 500 color consuming color toner printing black and white text

How can I prevent the consumption of color toner when printing black/white text documents (pdf in Adobe Acrobat)???
I just finished printing about 2200 2-sided pages in Adobe Acrobat pdf files, all black/white text, on my 500dn.  The color toner appears to have been consumed as I am getting signals that my yellow and magenta are below 10%.  They were over 40% when I started the project.

  • Some PDF Files Shown with Black Background and White Text - Annoying

    Hi All,
Recently some of my pdf documents, stored on my phone, are displayed with a black background and white text. This is quite annoying. A few weeks ago I didn't have this problem. All of my pdf documents had a white background with black text.
I'm a new iPhone user without much experience with the device. I have the 4.3 version of the software and update when prompted. I use Files Pro, FileApp Pro and QuickOffice applications in conjunction with DiskAid.
If there is something I can do to correct the situation, please let me know. If the problem is with Apple, they need to fix the situation. My phone, which used to be a great device for storing documents, has turned into an annoying bug.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • PDFs printing with black background and white text.

For some reason some of our PDF's have been printing with black backgrounds and white text, even though they appear to be normal on the screen before they are printed. I haven't been able to confirm 100% yet but it appears to only be happening with pdfs that were created from scanned documents.
Can somebody please offer me some suggestions.

Absolutely agree with the original poster.  I find white text on black background so very very difficult (I changed from using Tweetbot on iOS to Tweetlogix for this very reason) and it physically hurts my eyes to try to read it.  I can just about manage with Spotify using white text on a black background on the large screen of my MacBook Pro - and I do mean "just" - but for the smaller screen of my iPhone 5 it is just impossible.  Even with a retina screen such as that on the iPhone 5S there is a strange ghosting effect and it gives me a headache to look at it for too long.
This may be something to do with age!  I suspect most app developers are youngsters with almost perfect eyesight, but for those of us whose eyesight is less than perfect, this white text on black background really is so very difficult.
I know there is a workaround in setting the iPhone to invert ALL colours (under Accessibility in Settings) but it's a real pain to have to keep altering this setting every time I want to open or close Spotify, and it doesn't look right anyway.  iOS7 is supposed to be a light, bright, easy to read OS - sadly this new Spotify app is the opposite of that.
Please would Spotify consider adding a simple light or dark theme option, so that those of us who want it can have our much easier to read light background back again, with grey or black text?  It would be a great help to those of us who have eyesight problems.
If not, I may have to cancel my Spotify Premium account and move to Deezer instead, as I mainly use Spotify when out and about in the car, so am using the iOS app a lot.
Thank you for considering this plea!

  • Change White Text to Black

I've been googling to find a solution to a basic problem and cannot believe what I'm reading. The issue is white text/white background in the text messaging app. I NEED to change the text color from white to black and cannot believe this is not possible.
Could someone please tell me how to do it because it has to be possible.
Please don't say use the invert video option because this is NOT a workable solution.

I am using iOS 7.0.4 and I have seen white text in a blue/green bubble but that is not the same as "white text on a white background". Note that your original post said, "The issue is white text/white background in the text messaging app".
If you are asking if the white on green or white on blue can be changed then i believe the answer is no, that cannot be changed.

  • Enforcing black background / white text on websites

GOAL: Have consistent web browsing experience with generally dark-colors, without white-flashes. Minor bugs and quirks are fine.
Is there anybody who has tried to achieve this? Any success? What software do you use?
I currently use chromium with Deluminate extension. Resulting colors are good, however, white flashes occur when clicking links (etc) and it's killing me. I would switch browser without hesitation if there was a way to do this nicely. Any help/advice/tips?

I have similar question not for web browser but the os. I use zion (reversed) colour sheme (system settings > apps looks or how it is named in english > colour > zion (reversed), i changed two options because on white screen text was black and window was black so i was not able to see antyhing that i typed in. Now i have black window with red fonts and it works, but on some occasion not all webistes work that well and sometimes i have websites that are white, and fonts when typing are still not visible because of colour scheme.
1 - webpage that does not allow me to see what i type in because text is black and window is black
2 - the same webpage, text is only visible not when typing in but when i highlight it:
3 - and how it should look on webistes, for archforum is an example, because i see what i type. Window is black but text is red, so i see it :
I would like to know what to change to being able to see what i type in or choose (when there are java or flash content) on all of webpages.

  • Black background and white text physically hurts & creates ghosting. Please add UI color toggle.

    Hi,
The new white text on black design physically hurts my eyes and gives very bad ghosting (i.e. persistent image like those in optical illusions that make you stare at particular color combinations and then look away). I know I'm not the only one with this issue because I've researched it in the past. Without an option to switch back to the old design (White background/black text), I'll need to delete my Spotify account and find another service. Please add an option to switch between the two (because I know many prefer black backgrounds). Myself and a host of others, however, cannot use these color combinations. Please let me know if there is a work-around; it would be much appreciated. It's basically unusable to me in it's current state. :(

  • Printing white text on colored paper

I feel really silly asking this and I know it's something that I'm missing but I can't seem to get white text to print on colored paper. I've searched in several places but can't find a solution. I would greatly appreciate and help in solving this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for all the responses. All of these methods I was aware of but for some reason I kept thinking I "should" be able to print white text. What I ended up doing was creating a "white box" area and filling in that with the information I wanted.
FYI, I am creating some band posters and wanted to use a commercial printer to print the generic poster and then have a way of adding my own text about the venue. (For small batches only)
    Thanks again,
    Robert
