Why am I missing songs after reorganizing files?

This morning did everything I usually do but iTunes couldn't locate any song files. So I rebooted and still had the problem.
Went to Edit/Preferences and saw that folder location was pointing to the default folder on C:, but my music is on an external drive (F:).
So I changed the location to the correct location and it refreshed the library. Then it asked if I wanted iTunes to reorganize the files. I said yes.
Once complete, I had a whole bunch of exclamation marks in the left column! I've confirmed that the song files are actually in the correct place. And it's very random which ones are lost - 2 or 3 songs from albums - the rest of the songs ARE there. Very strange.
I have over 20k songs, so going through and manually "reattaching" each file is not even an option.
Any ideas out there???
Thanks!
Mike

From iTunes 9.2 onwards if you attempt to Get Info. on a lost file and then cancel when asked to try to locate it, the summary tab should show you where iTunes "thinks" the file should be. If possible move missing files back to where they ought to be then close & reopen iTunes to reconnect them.
That's fine for an obvious error, say the iTunes Media folder has been relocated, but since you seem to have a random selection of located and unlocated tracks you could try my script SwitchLinks.vbs.
Select one or two tracks to begin with, double-click on the script to run it and use the No option so you can check that is identifying the right files to reattach to. If that goes OK then create these lost and found playlists and run the script on your missing tracks in larger groups.
Lost & Found
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist.
Alternatively, if you are not bothered about play counts, ratings, date added etc. then you could try iTunes Folder Watch which can scan your library for missing files to be removed and scan your media folders for new files to be added.

  • Problem with "missing" songs after migrating from Win PC to Macbook

    Hello,
I'm trying to move my daughter's iTunes library from her old Win PC to her new Macbook Pro. I mostly got it right, but there are roughly 100 songs which do not play because they cannot be found. I can click through each and "find" them for iTunes, such that they will work, but is there a way to do this globally at once?
I suspect it has something to do with "Consolidate Library", but I can't quite seem to make that work. How can I tell the Mac to search out ALL missing songs and reconnect them (or even move the files all to the iTunes folder)?
I think I should have done a “Consolidate” on the old machine first, but is there a way to salvage this without starting completely from scratch?

  • Ipod missing songs after update

I never should have done this but when I updated my itunes recently and left auto-sync on. Plugged my ipod in, itunes takes the next 6 hours trying to update my ipod with 40 gigs of music. It was able to do it, and it shows all songs as being imported successfully when i look at my ipod library plugged in to itunes. However, when I unplug my ipod and use it, I only see one song from each album. Some albums are complete but very few. Also, now I can't restore my ipod when connected to itunes to try to reload all of my music. Any ideas?

All of my songs show up on my computer library and are all playable. I've tried restoring to factory settings and even after doing so, I encounter the same problem.
Update though: when I plug my ipod into my car, it can play all of the songs though I can't see them when scrolling through the ipod library. It seems like they're "hidden".
I never get any errors, just can't see about half of my library.

  • Missing songs after sync

After syncing some songs are not on my iphone. They are in my iTunes library and with my phone plugged in it shows that the songs are on the phone but they are not visible in my playlist. Any suggestions?

Did you do a search by Song title? Should be in there.

  • Missing songs after syncing

i updated my ipod touch 4gen with the version 4.3.3 and it synced my ipod before it started but now 5 of my songs are missing. any help?

    1) Are the songs still in your iTunes library?  2) Did you purchase the songs via iTunes?
If the answer to 1 is yes, just add them back the same way you add any new music to your iPod.
If the answer to 2 is yes, go into iTunes look at the top right of the screen and select "purchased".  You can re-download the songs from there.

  • Why am I missing several EXS sample files?

I did a fresh install of both Leopard and the Logic Express 8 upgrade and now several presets in the Sound Library come up as sine waves if they are from EXS24 (Eighties Jump Brass, Crystal River, People On The Beach to name a few).
I did not install Garage Band/iLife '08 or the original Logic Express 7.2. Are those multisamples not included with the LE 8 upgrade? How do I get them?
    This is extremely annoying...

I forgot to mention that when EXS is opened when any of these presets are selected, the Instrument display window where the preset is displayed in EXS shows "MISSING: xxxx" where xxxx is the preset name.

  • Missing songs after format and resync

    Hi,
I bought my iPod last February with I had a PC therefore my iPod was formatted to my PC. When I recently bought my Macbook I had to format my iPod so that it works with the Mac. I backed up my songs on an external hard drive but the songs that I purchased through iTunes didn't back-up properly and don't work. How do I get back the songs and albums that I already purchased through iTunes?
    Thanks.

If your backup isn't readable and you don't have another to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link you'll be able to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • (!) How to locate the original file for missing songs?

song could not be used because original file could not be found. Would you like to locate?
I got this message when I last tried to synch my ipod.  The message said there were 100 files which could not be found.   Actually more than 100 songs show the exclamation mark that says the file can not be found.
Previous posts on this issue suggest the underlying file has been changed or moved out from the ITunes organisation.  Well the last time I synched my ipod on Lion a few days ago it was fine.  On Sunday I wiped my hard drive, carried out the upgrade to Mountain Lion as a clean install, and used Migration Assistant to bring my user data over.  After that I ran cclean and disk utility permissions and disk verification.  Then this happened.
I migrated my  iTunes Library to an external hard drive six months ago. That was disconnected during the upgrade so I am not sure why the files can’t be found now.    Anyway, I want to recover the missing files .  I could not find them by name, album or artist on the external drive.  So I thought I would find them in Time Machine backup #1.  I couldn’t!.  Nor could I find missing songs on my alternate Time Machine backup #2.  Both Time Machine backups are set to include the external drive.  Songs recognised in iTunes are visible in the backups, but not the ones that are missing.
I have a third backup volume which was a clone of the Lion setup before I did the upgrade, but I can’t access this or Mac for a few days.
I did have some permissions failures after the 10.7.4 upgrade which resulted in creating 2 new standard user accounts.  Maybe I’v e got some files across these users?  But in that case I’d have seen problems before the upgrade?   I notice a fair number of these are compilations imported from CD about 4 years ago.  Bu tnot all.
(1).  Is there a smart way to list all the files that are missing?
I can scroll through all of  ITunes Music to see where there are exclamation marks.  I’d like to only list these missing songs.
(2).  How can I locate the missing media files?
    -  a search on Name / Album / Artist hasn’t found them in live drives or on TM backups.  I’ve still got the missing songs on my iPod, however.
Once I can answer these questions with your help I’ll know what would be the best way to try to recover, and to work out what went wrong.  I’m shocked that I can’t find them in backup.   Eventually I can restore audio from original source.  If they were photos that went missing from library and backups then I would have no way to get back!
    (3) could this happen in iPhoto?  (shiver)

Thanks for taking the time to look at my problem.  Shared is empty and I didn't back it up - I only transferred the standard and Admin users to the clean install of Mountain Lion.
But I got some valuable insight into how the iTunes library is set up from your article on split Libraries. I'd like to see it in the Tips for iTunes for Mac.   My Itunes library was set up in pre-Itunes 8 structure, and as I'd moved it to an external drive it didn't get migrated to the new structure in recent upgrades, perhaps?
I found your article extremely useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991.  That gave me the means to restore the missing files more quickly than getting the original CDs out and re-importing them to iTunes.
So I've now restored the missing files and started the backups rolling ....
I still don't understand how they went missing.  However the best backup was the Ipod itself.

  • Why does Visual STudio 2012 References keep showing Exclamation mark (which means assembly is missing) even after I specify the exact path?

Our web application at work requires Visual Studio 2012
For one of the projects within the Visual Studio 2012 Web Application Solution, we need the System.Web.Mvc in the References.
I already have the following in the packages folder:
    {blah...blah..Visual Studio Solution path..blah}\packages\Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc.5.1.1\lib\net45\System.Web.Mvc.dll
I keep adding it, but the References still shows the Exclamation mark ( which means missing) next to the System.Web.Mvc
Why does it keep showing the Exclamation mark ( which means missing) , even after I specify the exact path to the System.Web.Mvc.dll ?

    Hi cslewis33,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
Based on your issue, if you want to add the System.Web.Mvc reference for a web application in VS2012. As far as l know that the System.Web.Mvc dll is default be located like this path:" C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET MVC 4\Assemblies\System.Web.Mvc.dll.
So if you create the web app using c# language, I suggest you can right-click your Reference under the we application -> Add Reference->select the System.Web.Mvc in the Assemblies tab.
If the above suggestion still could not help you, I suggest you can consult this issue directly to the ASP.NET forum:http://forums.asp.net/ , maybe you will get better support.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Missing songs from playlists after moving to a new mac

Bought a new imac 5k. On my old Mac (Pro) I saved the library.xml file in order to save all my playlists (about 70), rather than save each individual playlist file (which would have taken too long.)
Moved the library.xml file to my imac, "added to playlist", and it brought over all my old playlists. Cool, right?
Nope. Many of them are missing songs now. I wrote down how many songs wee in each playlist on the Mac Pro before cleaning it out, and the same new playlist on my imac has a wrong/smaller song count.
Now, I have to try and figure out which ones I'm missing? Ugh. Why didn't ALL of the the sings on each playlist transfer over? Any idea how to fix this? Running Yosemite 10.10.1.

You can't install Adobe applications by copying from a backup.
Start by cleaning out all the CS apps using Adobe Cleaner Tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download a new installer from here:

  • Why do i continue to be told to authorize a song after I have authorized it?

I continue to be told to authorize a song after doing so.  Itunes tells me the song is already authorized for the computer and continues to repeat itself.  Does anyone know what i am doing wrong and why I keep repeating this step getting nowhere?

Delete the song from your library including the file. Then go to the iTunes Store and select "Purchased" from the Quick Links side bar on the right. Go to Music tab to re-download again

  • Anyway to automatically relink random missing song files in iTunes library? Random songs have "!" while other songs in same album folder are fine.

I can manually relink a missing song by navigating to the album folder in my iTunes media folder where all of my music is stored, but there are hundreds of "missing" songs in my 100+ GB Library. Any way to get iTunes to reconcile the library in a more automated fashion? I am fearful of solutions that may introduce a ton of duplicates.
Would also like to know why this has happened so I can prevent it in future. Why are some songs in an album coming up missing and others in the same root folder playing fine?? It's not like my library is missing, 80% of my music is fine.
My MAC iTunes library is organized by iTunes and all new media is copied into the iTunes folder (which I have "living" on an external USB 500GB hard drive, which I sometimes use with my PC Laptop when I travel - I don't do this often and it has never caused a problem before.)

UPDATE: I contact the developer fo the iTunes Track CPR script just to give him some feedback. His reply, "
Thanks for letting me know. CPR needs a good looking at. But have you tried "Music Folder Files Not Added"?
    http://dougscripts.com/466"
I used that script and it found all of the MIA "missing" songs and then added them back to my iTunes library (took about 7 hours to auto add about 2000+ songs.) This process also created duplicates, but I was able to use the "Manage Duplicates" feature of iTunes under the File menu to see a list of all duplicates; then I deleted all of the songs with the"!" next to their names (took about 45 minutes.)
So I think in the end this did save me a lot of time and aggrevation.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Chris!

  • After I installed the latest version of ITunes I get a message saying I'm missing the SQlite3.dll file. I have even unistalled the new version and then re-installed, still same message.

After I installed the latest version of ITunes I get a message saying I'm missing the SQlite3.dll file. I have even unistalled the new version and then re-installed, still same message.

With Windows Explorer, navigate to your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support folder.
Copy the SQLite3.dll that you should find there, navigate to the nearby Mobile Device Support folder, and Paste it in there also.
Restart the programme all should be well
In case that your OS is (64 bit)
    1. Open windows explorer, go to location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    2. Copy file "SQLite3.dll"
    3. Now paste it in the folder  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support
    4. Restart the programme, it should not display that message, it should be clear.
    Good Luck
