Why are ITunes Library files stored on Buffalo Pro 1TB NAS being corrupted?

I'm having a flaky problem with the ITunes library files (Mac version) stored on a Buffalo NAS. Frequently, ITunes says the ITunes library file is damaged and creates a new one.
Moreover, there are temp files that ITunes apparntly creates that apparently become the new Library and XML files when ITunes shuts down. Apparently, this is done behind the scenes while ITunes is shutting down, but lately, these files are no longer being renamed or deleted. Often multiple temp files will accumulate.
Lastly, and most oddly, if I try to rename one of these temp files to ITunes Library based on best guess from size and date which is the ITunes Library file, it sometimes works, but it sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't, I will find a "phantom" ITunes Library file and ITunes Library.xml that cannot be selected, opened or deleted. They are greyed out in Finder. Since the file exists, a rename or copy will fail, saying a file already exists with that name, but I can't select it to delete it. Often when this happens, the actual file name seems to "flicker" between temp file and Itunes Library file. If I try to click on ITunes Library, it disappears, but a new temp file instantly appears. If I try to click on the temp file, that disappears and the ITunes Library file appears.
Rebooting the NAS fixes the phantom file problem. I delete all ITunes library and temp files, and reindex from ITunes, but it only starts all over again.
If I do the same process in Windows, ITunes will only find about 10% of my files and then stop. (I have about 16,500 tracks total.) Windows doesn't seem to have any probelms with "phantom" files.
Checks on the NAS disk array show no problems.
Any thoughts?

  • Why are itunes folder files appearing on my desktop

I installed itunes on my new desktop and the itunes folder files are showing up on my desktop.  Does anyone know how to fix this.

This may happen if there are permissions problems with the folder that iTunes is supposed to be putting its files in.
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.

  • Trying to back up iPad to external hard drive, "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."

This issue is somewhat complex so I will try to explain it as clearly as I can. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
It all began when I kept getting popups from my iPad saying that I had not backed up since May. I realized that was pretty dangerous so I decided to finally try syncing it to iTunes, though I had avoided doing so for so long because I knew that when I tried there was no room on the computer. I then remembered that I have an external hard drive with plenty of storage space, so I got that out and set it up with a folder to move iTunes and the backup into.
On iTunes I went to the Advanced Preferences and changed iTunes Media Folder Location to the G: folder, with the keep organized box checked. I also copied the previous backups from the original C: drive to G: so that I could delete the ones on C:.
I used Junction Link Magic to link my now empty MobileSync backup on C: to a new (JLM would not work unless it was empty) backup folder on external hard drive G:.
I plugged in my iPad to iTunes to sync it, and while it was backing up I checked the new folder on G: to make sure that the backup was being put there. It was.
However, about halfway through I got the message "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."
My question is Why? If it is being made in a 1.5 terabyte hard drive now, and not the computer, why is there no disk space? My guess is that it must still somehow be saving to the computer. But how? And how can I get it to save solely on the G: drive where there is enough room?
I am running Windows XP and the latest version of iTunes.
An additional but not as crucial issue:
Much of my music has been lost, with the being displayed next to the songs in the iTunes library, and only 50 (purchased) songs remain on my iPad. This was because those missing songs were stored on a different external hard drive ( I:). However, I copied many of the music folders on I: over to G: so that everything could be together. I am wondering if it is possible for me to get these songs back onto my iPad. But this is not my most important issue right now, because I believe that once I get the first issue solved I can simply plug in I: and G: at the same time while syncing the iPad, and get the songs back.
Note: I have come to realize the iTunes program itself is still under Program Files in the C: drive. Does this have to do with anything?

Short term, free up some disk space. Long term, move the library to a bigger drive.

  • HT1399 my itunes library is stored as .aac files how can i convert them all together to mp3

my itunes library is stored as .aac files how can i convert them all together to mp3

Thanks for the quick response. I didn't think of that. I just tried several songs, and it DOES work as you say. Except iTunes downloaded the identical 128 kbps protected files again. These are 90's - "10,000 Maniacs" tracks.
So does this mean Apple doesn't have my "10,000 Maniacs" high bit rate unprotected files available? Then why would anyone even buy any songs through the "iTunes" store, when Amazon sells only 256 kbps MPEG music files, at a little cheaper price than Apple?
I'm missing something. The tracks I want to upgrade are available at Amazon in the higher bit rate format. Maybe iTunes is annoyed at me for using "Windows" on a PC and an "Android" phone?
    Thanks again.

  • TS4213 Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?

Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?
Examples of what is going on:
    1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc  AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
    2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
    3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums.  Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues.  What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    P.S. Here's the details on the software/hardware:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    iTunes 11.0.4 (4)
    iPhoto '11 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795)
    Keynote '09 5.3 (1170)
    Pages '09 4.3 (1048)
    Numbers '09 2.3 (554)

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer.  Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
    Do you have any suggestions.

I'm getting a message that reads 'The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." Why is this? And how can I fix it? I'm worried that I'm going to lose my entire library because of this.

A belated reply, as the problems itunes has have discouraged me from using it much. If you uncheck the "read only" box, it doesn't stay that way! Next time you use it, the box comes up checked.
I'm still having that problem, even when I open iTunes as administrator.
I've yet to see the answer to this problem. I use itunes mostly to download audiobooks, and I'm ready to download more, and want to save them!

  • .xml file and iTunes library files are missing from the music folder

I recently made a second itunes library on my external hd, today when I open itunes and choose this library, the .xml file and itunes music file are invisible or translucent, therefore I can't open my library. But when I go to my music folder they are missing. Another odd thing is that all my music is still in the folder. Is there a way to re-open my library w/o re-importing all my music? Can I some how get a new itunes library file?
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

This is not an answer but I have the same problem. From time to time I clone my music drive to an external drive for back up. When I do, I burn a copy of the album artwork folder, iTunes Music folder, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Music Libraru.xml, and iTunes Library file to CDRW. This is so I can copy them into the music folder in my user home drive of my laptop then hook up the external and have access my library. Trouble is the .xml file and iTunes library files don't always show up when I go to the iTunes folder in my Music folder. There either is a blank where they should be or the names appear with no icon and when I click to select, that dissappers too. I thought I had a solve by exiting iTunes and letting it save everything. It seems to bring the .xml file back but not the itunes Library file. Any thoughts?

I recently started receiving the following iTunes error message when I attempt to update the software on my iPad or iPhone: "The iTunes library file cannot be saved. You have exceeded your storage quota on the disk you are attempting to use."

You need to free up space on your boot drive.

  • "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."

Trying to back up iPad to NAS, "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full." I already changed my iTunes settings which now points to my NAS. In ~/Library/Application Solution/MobileSync/Backup I created an Alias which points to the NAS. What else can I do to backup my iPad to my computer? I'm a newbie on OSX but have lots of experience on Windows systems. I always believed Apple OSX is easy to handle but iTunes seems to has it's own "will".

No suggestions? I'm wondering and a bit disappointed that no one has comments to this. Is it so difficult with OSX? Comments appreciated.

When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do? There is no iTunes Library.itl file. On the desktop it is labelled iTunes Library.xml. Several others files have appeared there too including iTunes Music Library.xml
Before I can use the programme is it necessary to take another step?
    Thanks for advice.

Don't worry. I'm all for caution. I guess I should have asked a little more about what steps you took while trying to recover your lost library?
The permissions thing may be a red herring, but if there is a problem with file access rights to the designated media folder iTunes has been known to place files on the desktop instead since it can access this location. The most common cause for such problems is working with a folder on an NTFS drive via a differnt account or on a different computer. In the normal course of events folders created inside user profiles have limited rights for other users.
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Normally the iTunes folder will be created at <User's Music>\iTunes with the media folder inside it. The library files should all appear in the same place so your comment about there not being an iTunes Library.itl file is confusing. Is it just the case that the .itl extension is hidden? The two .xml files makes sense from the above and indicates that the active library is not in <User's Music>\iTunes, but you have a recovered file from when it was.
If, in fact, the situation is that your desktop is acting as the main iTunes folder, and contains the library file, Album Artwork, iTunes Media and (optionally) Previous iTunes Libraries folders, with all other content being inside the iTunes Media folder, then it should be relativly easy to rearrange your into the correct shape and move them to the correct location.
If things are more complex, with something other than a library folder containing a media folder, then reestablishing the normal order is more complicated. The iTunes consolidate function is used to bring copies of files stored outside of the media folder into the media folder. It may sometimes be needed as part of the process of tidying up, however it leaves behind originals. There are circumstances where there isn't room for two complete sets of the media files on the same drive which is why I suggested the script might be useful as it produces the same results for the library without leaving the originals for manual clear up.
I think before you do anything however, we should get a clearer picture of exactly what is where. Could you perhaps take a screenshot of the desktop and post it here? Take a look at this post on making a split library portable. The same techniques I outline there can be used to lick your library into shape, it is just a question of working out which to use in which order for the best effect.

  • 2 itunes library files

    Hello all!...
My wife and I both have macs; she has a macbook and I a MBP. I store all our music on a lacie NAS and use an automator script on both MB's to connect to the libraries. You can read up on my setup here: http://busyashell.com/blog/articles/2007/02/06/how-i-share-our-itunes-library-wi th-multiple-macs-and-my-nas
The one problem I have is when I purchase music or download podcasts, my wife's library is not reflecting the new files and same if she purchases, I don't see them. I have to manually add them to my library. This is a major flaw in my setup described above.
How can I sync these two library files to reflect both of our changes, or is there a way for me to set up both macs to use one library file? I had thought about symlinking both macs to use a file stored on the NAS, or chronosync. Chronosync doesn't seem to be able to diff two files and append the diffs. Correct me if I'm wrong, and if I am, please point me to documentation.
The other issue I have is that this NAS is painfully slow. For some reason my wife's MB has a slightly faster pipe to the NAS than my MBP. I cannot figure out why.
Any input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to make this setup rock solid.
MPB, MB   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

No. You cannot merge .itl files. What you can do is move a library in a portable shape from one computer to another. See Make a split library portable for details. You can run two independent libraries on the same computer using either multiple profiles or by using the method shown in How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one.
Once both libraries and both sets of media are on the one computer there it would be possible to export the playlists from one library (start with the one that only has one device synced to it), then import them into the other (which will become the main library) along with all of the content of the first, then consolidate and deduplicate. The advanced preferences to Keep... & Copy... should be turned off while attempting this.
Finally the device that has synced with the discarded library needs to be backed up and then restored using the main library to avoid data loss. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for more details.

  • Need to restore iTunes library locally stored

I do not maintain my ITunes library in the cloud. All is kept..to the extent that I can .. locally.  Don't know exactly when this happened, perhaps during the last iTunes update, but today when I was doing an iOS update to my iPodTouch5G noticed that iTunes was no longer connected to the iTunes libary that I maintain on my D not my C drive.  My D drive is a terabyte HD; the C drive is a 256GB SSD. I tried to simply tell iTunes to point itself back to the D (D:/MyMusic/Itunes) hoping that it would simply redirect itself there and pick up the libary of music, videos, books, etc I have stored there. But no joy at all.  I refuse to believe that I need to rebuild my library given all the palylists etc I' ve established. What is the easy way to rebuild my library? Until this is fixed, everything I have on my IpodTouch is not being backed up (even tho it says it is.when I sync it).  Everythign on my iPodTouch is still there.  I just want my local libary in iTunes restored.
Note that the folder containing my iTunes libary is intact.. all the data is there..but somehow I have seem to have lost the index that knows its there along with all my settings.

Sounds like you might need to make a split library portable but first you'll need to fix it...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.
