Why are old emails showing in Time Machine?

I recently purchased a 500Gb drive for Time Machine. The good news is that it works exactly as described. One curious thing, however. I regularly delete emails from Mail. I show no emails in my current inbox and I've erased all deleted messages from my inbox. When I activate Time Machine, however, it shows about 750 emails in my current time inbox- dating back to 2006! I know I must have deleted these at some time, because of the nature of the messages. I'm assuming that I have a file of old deleted messages somewhere that needs to be erased. Any suggestions on what I can try?
Thanks!

You have to purge old emails within Time Machine as well. Because it keeps incremental backup data, you need to launch Time Machine whilst within email, and highlight the messages you want to delete forever!
Go upto the Options Tab and click delete. You will be asked if this is what you really want to do, and the your admin password will be requested. Once you have authenticated all your emails will be gone.

    Hi ..
    Try a reset.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
No data is lost due to a reset.

Old emails, in what manner? As in previous to installing the account on this device?
Did you use the Device Switch Wizard found in the BlackBerry Desktop Software?
How did you move your old emails over from the old device to the new?

  • I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and i can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help

I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • My old backups on the Time Machine disk are not accessible.

    Hi everyone,
I installed a fresh OS X Mountain Lion yesterday. I tried to use Migration Assistant (in the Utilities folder) for the first time, to migrate my old data from the Time Machine back-up disk.
After almost 6 hours, my data was completely in place from the backup disk. In fact, the data was gotten from the latest version of backups as I expected. But now, when I go to Time Machine to browse my old backups, it seems that all backups are still there, detected by the Time Machine itself, but it is not possible to access any of them.
In fact, selecting one of the past backups from the Time-Line on the right edge of the screen, has no effect. All the windows behind the current finder window in the Time Machine are also dimmed, seems that no backups are there. But the Time-Line on the right edge of the screen displays several items from the first backup on my disk to the latest which was for the day before yesterday.
This is not what I expected from the Time Machine. I was so glad when the Migration Assistant read all my data from the backup disk and put them in place. But I did not expect to lose my old backups which are still there on the disk, but Time Machine behaviour is like the times where there are no backups.
It is important to note that before migrating data using Migration Assistant, I was able to browse all my backups in the Time Machine. This was also one the great features of Time Machine, since I had a fresh OS installation, and all my data from the past were accessible in the Time Machine.
I could also get my data one by one and restore them in-place using Time Machine but it was some how cumbersome.
Now is there any one to let me know why this has happened? I Appreciate your time to write.

  • Mail Showing Old e-mails Under Time Machine

    Hi,
I just upgraded to Leopard yesterday on my iMAC. All went very well (Knock on wood!!!). I have turned on Time Machine. At this point it has about 1/2 day of backups. When I enter Time Machine with mail up, it shows 8 "old" e-mails in my inbox which are not "really" there. When I restored a couple of these e-mails, the restore went fine. I then moved the restored e-mails to my In box. Then brought up Leopard and now the 2 restored e-mails are duplicated in the first Time Machine view. I deleted the restored messages in the In box, went back to Time Machine and there is only a single version of these "old" e-mails.
Wondering if there is something "messed" up with Inbox under mail. Any ideas on how to permanently delete these messages?

    Hello Stan:
I have never looked at Mail vis a vis Time Machine before. Oddly enough, I have five items in my spam folder (not in my current Mail spam) that date to 2006. I have no clue how to get rid of them.
In my case, my E-mail comes from an AOL mail server. There must be some anomaly someplace.
Not an answer to your question, but simply feedback.
    Barry
P.S. I am running a little test. I restored those really old spam messages from TM. They appeared in a "recovered message" folder. I deleted them. I will see what happens when I do another TM backup.

  • Restore Inbox Email Accounts from Time Machine?

My Mac lost power while I was in Mail. When I rebooted, my mail had lost all my Inboxes and accounts. I tried to restore from Time Machine, but I can't get all my accounts back. I have found all my stored emails in a Time Machine folder. Is there any way to go back to a previous version of Mail where it was all organized and intact? What I'm seeking specifically is for the numerous email accounts I had set up show up again under my Inbox.
    Thanks for your help!

Do the mailboxes appear in Mail, but are empty or incomplete? If so, I'd be inclined to start by selecting each mailbox in turn, then from the menubar, +Mailboxes > Rebuild.+ That may fix it without any further hassles.
If the mailboxes appear, but the rebuild doesn't recover all the messages, see #15 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If the mailboxes don't appear at all, quit Mail and use Time Machine to restore the preferences file, then the messages, as in #15.
    It's in <your home folder>/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
If you were searching for it via a Finder search, you have to include +system files,+ as odd as that seems. But the easiest way to find it is to just navigate to it in your backups.

  • Why are my emails getting caught in my outbox and not sending?

Why are my emails getting caught in my outbox and not sending?

This started happening to me immediately after updating to 10.9.3. None of the suggestions that I could find through Google (orotherwise) helped at all. Mail.app simply does not try to empty the outbox. I would call AppleCare, but they'll just tell me that the software is fine and that it's unreasonable for me to expect to be able to send email.
Apple support is a dim shadow of it's former self, but it correctly reflects teh state of Apple development. I picked a horrible time to switch to Mac.

  • Why are the emails in my "trash" folder deleted automatically every Saturday?

Why are the emails in my "trash" folder deleted automatically every Saturday?  The employee at the Apple Store told me to contact my email carrier, but they told me it was an Apple issue.
    iPhone5c  iOS 8.1.2

I keep Outlook Express running on my desktop all the time.  The emails come into the inboxes of both my desktop and my iPhone.  Once the emails are received on the desktop and I read them on my phone, they automatically go into the trash folder.  If it really is trash, I manually delete them and they go over to the other trash folder.  Then I can empty all of them at once.  If it's really important, sometimes I manually move it to another folder.  But then Saturday comes along and the trash folder all of a sudden becomes empty.

Welcome to our family. We want you to be able to enjoy all the services we provide and we definitely need to address this. Do you receive/make calls without problems? Are you able to receive messages with your contacts' number? Are you using iMessages? If so, go to Settings>Messages>Send&Receive>only your phone number should be enabled.

  • Can I use both newly cloned MBPR retina and old-MBP with same Time Machine

When my new-MBPR retina cloned from the old-MBP back up in Time Machine via migration assistance, will this newly-cloned MBPR continue thereon backing up with the same old-MBP back up in Time Machine? I.e. continuing same timeline?
And what happen to my old-MBP back up, if I continuing to use my old-MBP with the same Time Machine on? Will TM recognised 2 different MBP and thus creating 2 back ups? I seem to have problem to keep 2 MBP running with same TM. Programs not responding even force quitting them!
And what should I do to use both? Appreciate your help. Thank you.

OK, but in general I can use this one device as both file storage and Time Machine.
I thought that (for some reason) once I set up the Time Capsule to act just as Time Machine storage I would be unable to access it as a plain file storage.
I have just tested it now, and it seems it can work as both - file storage and Time Machine. I can see the Time Machine backup file on it and folders where I can dump regular files.
The only thing I would need to occasionally do is delete some old backups to keep Time Machine segment below 1 TB just so I have plenty of space for regular files.
    This thing is awesome. :)
