Why can't I assign a particular color to an event?

I've been using Entourage as my primary mail and calendar program for over ten years. I have an iPhone and Mobileme and think it's time to intergate everything into Mac.
However, I've been disappointed by iCal. Unlike Entourage, it doesn't seem to offer any features in terms of categorizing/color coding specific events.
I have created two calendars, one for work and one for personal. Problem is that the events in each calendar are automatically assigned the same color as the calendar, ie. all personal events are orange, all work events are blue. If you click on "Edit", there are no options available to change the color.
I would like the ability to change the color of particular events. Can this be done?
Also, what's up with the muted color palette in iCal? Is there any way to introduce some more interesting colors?
Overall, I feel that iCal is pretty poor and certainly not up to the standards of other programs such as iWeb, iPhoto or iTunes. It needs a major overhaul.
Any suggestions would be great, otherwise I'll stick with Entourage.

You can create many calendars, each with its own colour, to try and differentiate events more easily, but you can't apply colours to individual events.
You can get a wider colour palette by clicking 'other' in the colour chooser, which opens the full Mac colour options palette, allowing you set up any colour you want.
But if you want/need to be able to colour individual events, that doesn't help much, I'm afraid.
Generally, iCal is much more limited than Entourage, partly because it's not really designed as a PIM, more a simple calendar.

you can apply color threshold and extract the required color in the image. Try color threshold in vision assistant.

Why can't I assign applications to different desktops?

Why can't I swipe with three fingers to go from application to application which are assigned to different desktops since moving from Lion to Mountain Lion?

What I did: I used trackpad preferences and changed the settings to the following:
1) 3 finger swipe to go to previous and next page
2) 4 finger swipe to switch spaces.
Works like a charm now.

I already tried inverting the colors and then it washes out the photos I use as my wallpaper.
I love everything, so far, except this transparent issue.

ICAL Alarms - can they be automated? Also - color coding ICAL events

A question re alerts - how can I make the default automatically give me 30 minutes notice of an new event, the way one can in Outlook/Entourage??
Another question - can I color code various events in ICAL the way one can in Enttourage (ie, home related are blue, work are green, etc.?

But that changes all the events on the calendar, I think. I was trying to get different colors for different kinds of events (ie, work, home, kids, etc)
In that case make separate calendars for (ie, work, home, kids, etc).
How do I set the alarm so it is in effect automatically without my having to do it for each event

Why can I see photos in photo view, but now event view?

Why can I see photos in photo view, but not in event view. The event shows up, but when I open the event, it says there are no photos in the event. The only way I can actually open a photo in the event is to be in photo view, and open the photo from that view.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Why can't I assign hardware and guest os profiles to servers in the new SCVMM 2012 Service Templates?

Trying to learn SCVMM 2012, but I'm confused about how Guest OS and Hardware Profiles work with the new 2012 Service Templates.
I create a Hardware Profile and a Guest OS Profile. Then I open the Create VM Template wizard. In this wizard I can assign the Hardware and Guest OS profiles I created under the Configure Hardware and Configure Operating System steps in the wizard.
If I open the new Service Template wizard, select a Single Tier Server (for example), open the Service Template Designer and go to the properties of the server I find under Hardware Configuration and OS Configuration I cannot assign my Hardware and Guest OS
profiles to the server.
Why is this? It seems like extra work to have not be able to assign these profiles to servers in a service template. Is there something fundamental I'm missing here?

I have the same issues with the equipment I maintain. Two things are consistent that I see between this forum and my set up. I had 10.5 on all our Macs and each of them could connect with out issue to the shares on a windows xp machine. I have three Mac computers I am working with. 1. My main computer a MacBook Pro 2.4ghz core 2 duo, an Intel iMac, and an older Mac Pro G5 running OS 10.5 server.
I have another server running kiosk or signage displays that is a windows xp machine. All of my macs could access the windows xp machine by clicking on it and authenticating to it and then the shares will show up.
I upgraded my MacBook Pro first to 10.6 and have been unable to connect to the windows shares ever since. Keep getting Authenticatoin failure. So my work around is to transfer files to the 10.5 macs and then screen share one of them and access the windows share from them. Spoke with Apple support and they could not help and said it was a know issue but did not have a solution.
Last week I upgraded the iMac to 10.6 and it too, now will not authenticate to the windows shares.
Here are the strange things... I can take my macbook pro home and access all windows shares on my home networked computers. I even took the windows xp machine home from work to test it and I was able to connect to the shares without issue from my Macbook pro.
Two things stand out ... you mentioned a Cisco router and we use a Cisco router at work. Also, both of us have upgraded to 10.6 and authentication fails at that time.
Problem is between OS 10.6 and the Cisco routers I believe. I am not sure how to fix the issue though.

Why can't I change the background color of my UIView in IB?

I have a rootController which controls several other ***ViewController's and I have been doing the usual thing by changing the background color in IB. However, for one controller, I cannot change it's background color from the default no matter what I do.
To be clear, each new controller created has been done in the same manner using the UIViewController subclass with nib file.
I have cleaned the project and deleted the app from my iPhone countless times and still no change.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Why can't I change the background color on title slides in 10.0.2?

I can change the font color, but the background only seems to be able to be black. any truth in that? Seems like the older version I had let me change the background color.

Why can't I assign applications to spaces anymore?

I used to have my different apps (Mail, iTunes, Safari) open in separate spaces and the SAME space every time. I did this by right clicking on the open app icon in the dock and selecting options > Assign to > This desktop. This no longer works. Now applications ALWAYS open in the first space. When I right click on the icon now there is NO OPTION to assign where the app opens. The ONLY application I still have this option for is safari. For all the others it has disappeared. For example now when I right click on the mail icon the only options I have are: Keep in Dock, Open at Login, Show in Finder. There used to be the option to assign Mail to the current desktop, all desktops or none. That option has now disappeared. The same goes for iTunes and other apps.
Please note that I was well aware of how to assign apps to desktops before. Since 10.8.4 that option has now disappeared from my interface. Mission control offers no way to assign apps to spaces either. What happened?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Why can't I assign CMD F7 key to macros?

I use a product called iKey to create all sorts of macros. I have noticed that with both my iBooks (Late 2004 and Mid 2005) I cannot assign any macro to cmd F7, or Option F7, or Cntl F7, etc. (Fn F7 works fine.) Can anyone tell me whether there is something special about the F7 key?

By the way, this isn't an iKey thing. If I go to the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane in Tiger and select the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, it too will not allow the assignment of any key combination involving F7 except for Fn F7. This is beginning to drive me nuts!

Why can I not assign colour labels to some files

When I try to assign a colour label to some files or folders, even icons, sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've tried from the contextual menu, from Get Info, from File > Label. Sometimes, one method may work but it's puzzling when none works. Why is this anyway. I never had this problem before ML.
Colour me frustrated...

I've been so used to working seamlessly from external drives (I had a MBPro 2.2, 120GB drive, tip-toeing around in Lion), that it never occured to me that it would be different in ML on my new Mac Mini. So, yes, after further investigation, the problem seems to only occur on the ONE external drive which I used all the time for all my video files, photos, music and any other large folders. (I plan to migrate most of it to my main drive now that i have 1GB to play with, so it's a temporary hiccup at least.) This probably also explains why I have to "authorize" any move or transformation on that drive, but WHY? It doesn't happen on other drives and I even tried changing permissions to Read and Write for Everyone, to no avail. Perhaps it's still tied in to the MacBook somehow, but then so would be the other drives. ???
Anyway, thank you for your time and for making me delve into this further. At least now I know it doesn't affect the main system.

Why can't i reproduce vibrant neon colors in illustrator?

I have gone thru the spectrum and even used the eye dropper on images, but I can't get the colors to show up as obnoxious and nuclear as they look in images.

In addition to making your documetbn colro mode >> RGB, note the smapling bitnap images using SHIFT eyedropper is nto accurate.
you cannot set it to 1 pixel sample so it averages
SHIFT eyedropper sameples what is being sent to the screen and is jsut an approximation and not the actual pixel data
To get your color more nuclear doubleclick on the your fill color, then on saturation and slide towards 100.
and then brightness, depending on how nuclear you desire. 100% in both S & B will be the most obnoxious.
