Why can't I change my apple id / email address associated with my apple id ?

My apple id is associated with a gmail address.
I wan't to change it to something else.
So I went to: appleid.apple.com ---> Change apple id ---> Typed in new email address (everything shows green) ---> Hit Save.-->Edit box disappears as if everything went ok ----> But the box showing my apple id, still shows the gmail address!
It still shows my gmail address!! Doesn't send any verification email or anything! No matter what I do, it doesn't let me change it from my gmail address!
It let me change my password though, and also let me change my rescue email address.

Did you change the email for the Apple ID or did you create a new Apple ID? A new Apple ID cannot be used with content that was bought using a different Apple ID.

How do I change the email address associated with this account?

I can find no option to update the email address associated with this account. This is causing a problem since the Apple Support Communities ID that I use is different than my iTunes account name, but the email address for both is the same. it's causing all sorts of weirdness with Game Center, logging into this site with my iTunes account (errors out), etc.
I see no options in preferences ot update this account email address.
Am I missing something obvious?

Well 99% there anyway. Now that I've successfully updated my email address, it asked me to merge the new email address as the login, which is fine, so I did that, but now I no longer see the option to edit the "Username" value.
What I'm trying to do here is to retire my username under this account, and take it on under my primary iTunes account. It won't let me do that while this old account has it reserved.
Hopefully that makes sense

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. When signing up for iCloud I'm asked to choose an email address [email protected] I am already using an @me address via moblileme. When i input that address it states that that address is already taken. Try picking a new one. I don't want a new one I want to use my mobileme address. How can that be done?

It appears you set up a new iCloud account rather than migrating your MobileMe account over to iCloud. I migrated everything over this morning and am still using my old MobileMe email address.
Check to see if you can migrate rather than open a new account.

If you're running iOS 6, to change your iCloud ID go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new ID. Right, if the Apple ID is already set up, then you cannot change it to None until you put a credit card on the account.
If you set up a brand new Apple ID by first downloading a Free app, and then setting up the ID as a part of that process, then it can be None.

Help. My old @us.army.mil email address was terminated by the army. I used that address to register my first apple id account on my iPad. I can't remember my original Apple ID number and if I ask to reset my password, Apple sends the reset link to my old non-working email address. I have a new gmail address and a new Apple ID number associated with that address. How do I get my iPad to use my new gmail address and new apple ID number? Remember, I can't log out of my old account because I can't remember the password. Amd Apple will only reset the password by sending a link to my old, non functioning army email account. I recently updated my primary email address associated with my Apple ID account.
Now when I go to App store on my iPad it still tries to login to the App store using the old email address I had associated with the account, and naturally my password doesn't work. I can't figure out how to tell my iPad to login using the updated email address.
So in effect I'm locked out of the app store and I currently have 26 updates waiting.
I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting my IPad to iCloud with no luck.. However I cloud happens to show the correct/updated email address.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Apple recommends you change your Apple ID to your current, working email address. This will not create another Apple ID, it will only change it to your working email address. See Changing the name you use for your Apple ID if you'd like more information.
