Why can't I use an iTunes card to set up Family Sharing?

I am not at all happy that the new Family Sharing feature will not let me use an iTunes gift card and will only work if I use a credit card.  Since the beginning of 2014, I just discovered iTunes charged my credit card with $1,500 erroneously.  While this has been resolved in my favor, we decided to not put a credit card on our iTunes account and just use gift cards.  I was delighted to discover family sharing since I have two small children, but was dismayed to find out I cannot set it up with my gift card.  FIX THIS, APPLE!

First of all, we are fellow Apple users, not Apple.
second, you have options to limit family purchases, including in App by turning on the permissions function.
last, you can still add gift cards and iTunes will use those before charging a credit OR DEBIT card, see below....
Setting up Family Sharing
When you set up Family Sharing, you'll be asked to confirm that you agree to pay for purchases initiated by the family members you invite and that you have a valid payment method on file. Valid payment methods for setting up Family Sharing include credit cards and debit cards. You can change the billing method on file in your account at any time in your iTunes & App Store account settings.

What happens when you try to buy something, what are you trying to buy (you can't use your balance for gifting, you can only use a credit card) ?
If this is the first time that you've tried to buy something and you are being prompted to enter card details then unless you used the instructions on this page when creating it : Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method
then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store. You should be able to remove the card after entering it.
Or, and if you are being prompted to review the account, then you could see if this post by mountaingoatgirl lets you do so without needing to enter credit card details : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24303054#24303054
If you are getting a message to contact iTunes Support then to do so (these are user-to-user forums) :
    - go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww
    - click on your country's flag
    - click on the Contact Support at the bottom of the left-hand column
    - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
    - then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
    If it's a different problem ... ?

  • Why can't I use my iTunes card balance to given an app?

    Hi,
I have a balance from an iTunes card. I just sent an app as a gift, but iTunes forced me to use my credit card. Why can't I use my balance?
    Thanx
    Olivier

From the article from which you came:
Note: When purchasing an iTunes Gift, a valid credit card must be on file; you can't purchase an iTunes Gift with store credit.
Why Apple has this restriction I don't know, but many other download stores do as well.
    Regards.

  • Can I use a debit card to set up family sharing?

When setting up my family sharing it will not let me a create Apple id for a child under 13. It says that I have a debit card and to add a credit card. I don't use credit cards. If this is only for age verification why would it matter? I tried both of our cards on different accounts and still no luck. On my bank account it shows up as pending $1 each time I try. I called Apple support and they didn't know a way around it. I asked if a prepaid Visa would work. They thought it should. I bought one and tried it but no help. To set it up they require my birthday, social security#, address, phone number. With all that it should of verified my age. I really wanted to use the family sharing feature since I updated all our iPads to os8 with the newest update. They were all under my Apple id before. My bank suggested adding MasterCard secure, so I did but that didn't help. Any suggestions other than get a credit card.

Here are the accepted forms of payment for your Apple ID. There are alternatives to using a credit card. Many people use an iTunes gift card. You can purchase one almost anywhere.
    Credit cards
    Content codes
Store credit, including iTunes Store Gift Cards, Gift Certificates, and Allowances
    ClickandBuy
    PayEase
    PayPal
UnionPay (requires SMS PIN for setup)
Payment methods you can use in the iTunes Store, Mac App Store, App Store, and iBooks Store - Apple Support

  • How do you get around needing a credit card for setting up family sharing?

How do you get around needing a credit card for setting up family sharing?

I appreciate the replies about needing to setup a credit card for agreeing to pay for purchases and letting someone else be the Family Organizer.  The purpose of my question is to know if there is a way around apples requirement to have a valid payment method on file...we have money in our apple account (use iTunes gift cards) and I do not want to store my CC info at apple.  It seems like very odd that money in your account would not be enough to setup Family Sharing.
Very frustrating and just about ready to get rid of all the 15 apple products we currently have.
    Khuerter,
Having a credit card when you set up as Family Organizer is a legal requirement to prove that you are taking financial responsibility for the others on the account.  As Gail noted, there is not a way around that.
Once the account is set up, the Family Organizer can remove the credit card and replace it by a debit card.

  • Setting up iCloud family sharing. Why can I not use my iTunes as a valid payment method?

Why is iTunes card not a option under payment method. I am wanting to setup iCloud Family Sharing. But I need to give Apple a credit card which I do not have. That is why I use the iTunes card and redeem the money. If it is good enough to use iTunes card when making purchase from Apple iTunes store then why is it not an option when setting up iCloud Family Sharing account.

You're allowed play the music on up to 5 devices. Each device must be authorised. Unless you can connect the xbox to the apple store to be authorised, you will not be able to play the music on it.

  • Why can't I use a debit card to verify apple id?

I am an adult parent with 3 kids and trying to set up family sharing. The process requires that I use a credit card to verify my age, but I don't use credit cards (purposefully) so I entered my bank debit card. It says I can't use a debit card, it must be a credit card. That is ridiculous, a bank card should be better proof than a credit card, and many people I know do not use credit cards purposefully. So it isn't letting me approve and pay for my children's account purchases. There must be a way to do this without needing to use a credit card.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
As long as the debit card bears one of the brand marks that Apple accepts, such as MasterCard or VISA, then yes, Apple usually accepts debit cards.

  • Why can't I use my Itunes gift card for iphoto booth purchase?

I created a Christmas card and I thought that I could use my itune gift card since I have an apple and everything is hooked up to it and it never allowed me to enter in my gift card number.. why?

Only Apple can answer a question like that, have you tried asking them?

  • Why can't I use my iTunes gift card to purchase an app?

I received a $15 itunes gift card for my birthday and I redeemed the card on iTunes. The $15 is in my account but I can't use it to purchase an app for my mac at the app store. I heard other people had problems with the itunes and app store connections too. However, my friend had purchased an app with the itunes redeemed credit. Am I stuck being able to use it only for itunes purchases? Any answers?

  • Why can't I use my ITunes account balance to pay for a  click wheel app?

I have a IPod Nano 4G and would like to download one of the click wheel apps and purchase it through my ITunes account but it seems to only allow payment with credit card. Why is this?

    Hello Coastie53,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
That's just the way it is if you are trying to make the purchase from within the Canadian iTunes store. You are not allowed to use a gift card to purchase apps. As to why, that's just the rules for now. Sorry.

  • Why can't I use my credit card in OVI store?

After buying several apps in the Ovi Store using my credit card I was really surprised that Ovi Store does no longer accept my credit card because I'm not living in the US! (I'm requested to fill in a US address otherwise I cannot proceed.)
    **bleep**! *
I'm not living in Iran or some other country on which the US has imposed sanctions. Can someone please explain? It feels like going back in time and I think Nokia will lose a lot of Ovi Store visitors this way.

  • Why can I not use my itunes purchased songs in idvd/imovie?

Upto about two months ago I had no problem adding itunes purchased songs in my idvd / imovie projects - now I cannot. A warning message comes up about needing to authorise the computer and although I am using the same mac as I did when purchasing the tracks I still go through the process of authorisation - the tracks are still not available.
I have just purchased an xbox 360 and when connecting my ipod my purchased songs are once again unavailble to play even though I can play them using my ipod in the normal way.
Any ideas would be very welcome, thanks!!
