Why can't itunes stream movie audio over airplay?

This is more a suggestion to Apple engineers rather than a request for assistance but any comments in support (or otherwise) are welcome.
So, it goes like this, I use my iMac as my TV, entertainment centre, etc at home and I stream audio from there to an Airport Express hooked up to my stereo. Using Airplay in iTunes and third party apps like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil this works for just about anything: my music library, live TV through EyeTV and non DRM movies...but I like to download rental movies from iTunes and for some reason I can't stream audio from iTunes movies. I understand that this is a documented limitation of iTunes and Airplay, and there can be some issues with audio and video getting out of sync due to the buffering, but if Airfoil can do it, why not iTunes? The Airfoil video player is pretty basic, but it compensates for the buffering delay without any problems, and I can even use VLC to manually add a delay into the video track.
Would it be possible to include this as part of a future iTunes update? I mean, I'd much rather rent movies legitimately through iTunes than resort to other more nefarious means to be able to enjoy watching movies on my Mac. What's more, I have this pathological antipathy toward hooking things up with cables, so Airplay is the perfect solution for me and loads of other people as well, I'm sure.
So come on Apple, show you really do care about Airplay and let iTunes stream the movie audio so that I can enjoy my entertainment in High Fidelity.
Thanks,
Joe.

Well, here's some good news!
Looks like a feature of Mountain lion that didn't make the front page solves my problem. To get movie audio over Airplay, on OSX 10.8 go to Audio and MIDI Setup app, make sure you have the Audio Setup window open (Window - Show Audio Window) and if your Airport or other Airplay device is online it should appear in the list of audio IO devices on the left hand side.
Right click on the Airplay icon and select "Use this Device For Sound Output" and away you go. iTunes (10.7 at least) seems to be smart enough to realise that it is playing audio to a streaming device and buffers the video accordingly. Viola! Glorious hifi sound sans wires.

  • Why won't imovie stream my audio through airplay?

I'm using iMovie 10.0.1 on a MacBook Pro with Mavericks. I made a small movie with four or five songs as audio. When I use AirPlay to stream to the tv, the movie shows fine, but the audio is only coming from the MacBook speakers. Anyone know what's up?
    Thanks!

  • Can iTunes stream movie audio via airport?

Is there a way to do that? A bit disappointing when a video (even when purchased in iTunes store) is not being streamed to the airport.
    Thanks,
    andreas

    iTunes will not, mainly for synchronisation issue between audio and video. but Airfoil will allow it to you. it can virtually take the audio output of any software out to your AirTune and it works pretty well;

  • Why can't I stream my audio to my apple tv and airport express' from my iphone 5?

I want to walk in my door and have music throughout the house from my phone seamlessly, wake up to my phone alarm and have it continue with a play list that fills the house. If I could get my Hue lighting to sync with my audio alarm or an itunes alarm that would be great too. I feel like these are easy things to include. So what? Does apple leave them out on purpose and sell the functions later in the app store under different company names to increase profit or just leave the market open to collect revenue from third party companies that do? That's the only reason I can see for Air parrot being able to provide a basic function that Apple seams to have just skimmed over like extending your TV as a second screen. I'd also love to be able to use a password protected Flicker account for my screen saver in Apple TV instead of having to make all my family photos public to use this wickedly awesome system. I want to stay a Mac person but the last few years have me looking Galaxy class. I don't mind replacing all my tech, as long as it works and it's easy and it's life functional. But I'm a guy, so if I end up doin the shift, I won't be shifting back no matter what's done later to fix it sooooooo can anyone help me fix these incredibly obvious short falls in programing service? I'd also love to be able to search my songs by lyrics, not just name and artist soI can create quick age apropriate play lists for my nephew aaaaand how great woul it be to have a Genius list that compiled music based on activity, like say exersise or chilling out. I'd also love an app that periodically turns off all my other apps not in use, just saying. How is there not an all off app? Do you know how anoying it is to shut down 30 apps or forget they're running and loos battery power on mass. They should have an app for that with options, timers, blah blah blah. Seriously, multiple airports from my iphone, anyone?
    Thanks

scotty, you have to have your iTunes open and running to air play unless you subscribe to Match.

  • HT1449 Why can't I just move the entire iTunes folder?

In reference to the linked article above, why can't I just move the entire iTunes folder and create an alias where it used to be ~/Music/iTunes instead of that tedious process?

You can do that. You can copy the entire Music folder and create an alias for where it normally belongs. However, OS X will not allow you to delete the entire Music folder without a little extra work:
Copy the /Home/Music/ folder to the desired new location. Create an alias to the new location and put the alias in the /Home/ folder. You will now have a "Music" and a "Music alias" in your /Home/ folder. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. At the prompt enter:
    sudo rm -rf ~/Music
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted (it will not be echoed) then press RETURN again. The old Music folder should disappear. Now rename the "Music alias" folder to "Music".

  • Why can't itunes have DVD extras avaliable to download??

How come on every site out there that that makes movie available to download, there are not any extras or special features that are avaliable? I don't think i am a minority out there when i say that the only reson i buy DVDs is specifically for the extras or the commentaries, other wise i would just Nextflix them. So why can't itunes make them avaliable? Like if you buy the movie then they can have the commenary build in like as dvds have them build into the audio tracks. Or maybe the other extras can be a free extra dowload avaliave to people that purchase the movie. Otherwise i'm not paying $14.00 to download a movie that does not contain the special features that the DVD would have contained.
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

iTunes movie downloads only have what the studios allow.
I am sure that the studios make more money with DVD sales also , that could be why no extras in iTunes.
I won't download movies because of the low quality. A 2.5" screen for 2 hours, hahaha.

  • Why can't I purchase movies from my Apple TV? When searching not all available movies even show up!

I've had my apple tv for a while now, but have never actually purchased anything from the itunes store directly from the device. A friend recommended "Sleepless in Seattle" to me, and since it's not in Netflix or On Demand, I decided to buy it from itunes.
In doing a search in the Movies section of my Apple TV and typing in "Sleepl", I got no results. Bummed, I went onto Amazon to see how much the DVD would cost. On a whim, I opened itunes on my computer and did a search for the movie. To my shock, it is available for purchase on itunes for $9.99!
Once I found this out, I went back to my Apple TV and searched again. The movie still didn't appear to exist. I noticed then that every movie on the apple tv only gave me the option of renting, not buying. I was going to purchase from my computer, but then thought better of it because I wasn't sure it would be made available for me to watch on the apple tv.
Is there something wrong with my system? Why can't I buy movies from the device? I can buy tv shows, so it just seems weird to me that this is limited to the movies!

Ha, ha, you are such a tool!
That profile was written in 2007 and never updated. Unlike you, I don't live on this forum. I have one 5 year old Dell gathering dust, waiting for the trash that has some kids software on it my kids never use.
Currently I own a 27 inch iMac, and a 21 inch iMac used by my wife. I just sold my MacBook Air, which replaced my MacBook Pro of two years ago. I have an AppleTV v2, and unfortunately gave my AppleTV v1 to a friend before I realized they stripped out the movie purchase feature. We also own an iPad, two iPhones, and 4 iPods, two of which are used as digital music storage for our cars.
So yes, all of my factual posts concerning Apple's shocking decision to try to hide the fact they removed significant functionality from AppleTV when they revved it, are just driven by the fact that 4 years ago I used almost no apple products. Apparently I harbor a twisted desire to hurt the company that provides me almost all of my technology of choice today, despite being an early software developer for the Mac, helping start two Macinotosh software companies in the 1980s and 1990s, and working at Apple for 2 years in the early 90s.
The truth is, Apple's products weren't so good 15 years ago so I gradually switched to Windows for professional reasons. About 4 years go I bought an iPhone, and started to wake up to the fact that Apple had done a tremendous job moving the Mac platform to the intel architecture, and was very happy to replace my crappy dells with Apple products.
But that doesn't mean I wear blinders when their product teams and marketing department makes mistakes, or does something deceptive.

  • Why can I sync a movie but not TV shows on my nano (7th gen)?

I am using iTunes 11.0 and can sync a movie (Miracle on 34th Street) to my new ipod nano 7th gen but when I try a TV Show (a Planet Earth HD episode) or even a brief video clip taken with my camara I am told that such an action is not permitted on this ipod.  So why can I sync a movie but not TV shows on my nano (7th gen)?  Thank you.

Before you can sync video files, it must be converted into a format compatible with ipod.  If you can’t sync a video convert it by doing the following:
In iTunes, select the video you want to convert. Do one of the following then sync again after:
    1) Choose File > Create New Version > Create iPod or iPhone Version.
    2) Choose File > Create New Version > Create iPad or Apple TV Version.
    I hope this works.

  • HT1725 why can't I stream the friggin' thing? 3 hours to download a 45 minute show?

why can't I stream the TV show I want to watch and paid for? Why does it keep telling me it will take longer and longer to download this program? It started at 37 minutes and now it's up to 4 hours. And I see no progress. How can I stream it instead of downloading?

Dont know if i made it clear in the previous post, but it used to work with no problem, it's just recently that this has begun to be a problem.  could it be the latest updates that are causing the problem?  the only thing ive been doing differently is i've begun transfering my dvd collection to digital copies to stream through itunes.  the digital files are ones that itunes recognizes and worked before.  is it possible to have a library that is too large and slows down the streaming?  i tried using airplay last night, with the same results, the loading wheel just spins forever.  the AppleTV can find the itunes library, and all the files on it, but they just dont play.

  • Why do my itunes downloaded movies get suck frequently

Why do my itunes downloaded movies get stuck during streaming when my other accounts, i.e. netflix and amazon prime have no problems?

Is their really no solution to this problem? That would be really disappointing.
I have newly installed iTunes software on a new machine, and the iTunes software is broken from the beginning.
I purchased my music through the iTunes store because I thought it would make my life easier. It is sad to find out that this is not the case.

  • Why can't i get overdrive audio books onto my ipod

why can't i get overdrive audio books onto my ipod

Some find the mobile device transfer confusing.  To load or delete a WMA or MP3 book onto an Apple mobile device do the following.
    1. For Windows versions, you must first do a security update of Windows Media Player (even though you won't be using it) using Internet Explorer at http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite .
    2.  Open iTunes, plug the mobile device into the computer USB port and open the Overdrive Media Console.
    3. Highlight the mobile device in the left hand menu of iTunes and insure the "Manually manage music and videos" box is checked in the Summary Tab.
    4. Highlight the book you want to transfer in the Overdrive Media Console and click the Transfer Button.   A window opens permitting you to click the boxes for parts of the book you wish to transfer.
    5. After the book has been transfered, when you click the disclosure triangle (arrow) to the left of the iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes, MP3 books will show up under the Music subsection and WMA books will show up in the Books subsection.  Once the mobile device is disconnected from iTunes, MP3 books will show up in the Songs list of the mobile device and WMA books will show up in the Books list.
    6. To remove a book from a mobile device plug the device into the USB port and open iTunes. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes so that you can see the device’s subcontents. For an MP3 book select the Music subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.  For a WMA book, select the Book subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.

  • Why can I only purchase movies from within my own country?

Or moreover, Why can't I buy movies from the ITunes family in other countries?

You can ONLY buy from the itunes store of the country of your residence ( proven by the billing address on your credit card) and ONLY while inside the borders of that country.
