Why can't my existing iMovie project open in iMovie?

I am working on a Macbook OS X (10.6.1) in iMovie 9. I have worked on a project for hours and I read that iMovie auto saves your project when you quit iMovie, so I quit iMovie thinking that there would be no problem opening this project later on.
When I went to open the project, iMovie comes up blank with no contents, no videos etc. I see the saved project in my iMovie folders - but I've tried a dozen different things to try and get my project to open. I've tried importing my project in iMovie, I've tried just clicking on the project to open, I've tried googling information on security/permission terms. I've unlocked the permissions option to "write and read" in the "Get Info". Nothing seems to work.
Can someone please help me out on this one?

To jezz, Doug and Brian,
If you have not already tried this, trash iMovie's preference file. It's in your user (Home) folder Library>Preferences and is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Close iMovie before trashing the file. When next opened iMovie will create a new file with the default settings. You can change the settings if desired - in iMovie go to the menu item iMovie>Preferences and make any changes under each of the 4 tabs.
The preference file can become corrupted at times - the main culprit being iMovie quitting unexpectedly or crashing, causing iMovie to behave abnormally. When problems arise with iMovie, the first troubleshooting tip is to trash the preference file. This doesn't always fix the problem, but is worth trying.

    Hi
There is a limiting factor that's easy to miss.
    • FREE SPACE on Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk
When this goes low then iMovie, Mac OS and all applications runs into problems. So to get a safe way to work (for me) I set a minimum that I try to never go lower than. (Sorry for strange sentence)
I never let my Mac (Macintosh HD) go lower than 25GB free space. If it does - then I move away things to an external hard disk (always Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - as nothing else will do for VIDEO)
Else - in iDVD Time is the limiting factor. (iMovie - I never run into any - my monster Vacation epos is >>6 hours)
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.

  • Why?  Why can't I run iMovie and have it

Why? Why can't I run iMovie and have it ask me whether I want to load an existing project or new one? I don't see a setting for this in Preferences.
    thanks

I haven't gone to the trouble of actually testing to see which uses more CPU power, but Firefox has been faster than Safari on every Mac I've ever owned.
To see CPU usage by process, open the terminal (in Utilities) and enter 'top' at the command line. You might have to expand the window as processes don't appear in any logical order.
It could also be hardware-related: I have late 2009 mini with similar specs and it pinwheels easily.

  • Why can't I share my project? None of the options in the share dropdown menu is available.

why can't I share my project? None of the options in the share dropdown menu is available.

Your project is already saved in an iMovie Library on your hard drive. Re-installing iMovie will not affect your project or event files.
To reinstall iMovie, just drag the iMovie application from the Applications folder to the trash.
    Reboot your Mac.
Go to the Mac App Store and look under Purchases for iMovie and click Install.
You cannot edit your iMovie 10 project in iMovie 9.
iMovie 10 is so stripped down that one really needs to either go back to 9 or, if they can afford it, move up to Final Cut Pro X. If you're strapped for cash at the moment, you can download a trial version of the new Final Cut Pro X 10.1 and get 30 days of free usage out of it, even if you've already been using a free trial of 10.0.9.

  • Why can't I get Automator to open multiple files at once?

I'm trying to do something relatively simple with Automator: I want it to open (in Photoshop) all RAW files within a certain folder. Here is what I have:
    1. Get folder contents
    2. Filter Finder items: Name Extension Contains "RAW"
    3. Open Finder items: Open with Adobe Photoshop
When I save this as a Finder plug-in and apply it to a folder, it only opens the first RAW image in PS. It is possible to open multiple RAW images at once in Photoshop, so that's not the problem. Somehow I can't tell get Automator to open ALL the RAW images in the folder, not just the first one. I've tried substituting "Find Finder Items" for "Filter Finder Items" but the result is the same.
What am I missing? A million thanks to anyone who can give me a solution!

If your using PSCS2 I assume you also have Adobe Bridge.
The best I can come up with is a workflow that filters RAW files out of a mixed file folder into their own folder, then opens that folder in Bridge, from where, with a command-a (to select all) and command-o (to open), you get all of your RAW files up in the RAW converter.
    1. Get Specified Finder Items (Make this source folder)
    2. Get folder contents
    3. Filter finder items
    4. New Folder (Target for filtered results)
    5. Open finder items (Open with Bridge)
I've tried adding an Open with Photoshop as a last step and for some reason it bypasses the RAW converter and pops them straight into PS.
IMHO, it's just as easy to use the Adobe Bridge, and open the files you want direct from there.

  • In iMovie 10.0.2 Why can't I find iMovie projects or events to transfer to external harddrive?

I am trying to backup my iMovie Projects and all of the media for a number of events. I have been having trouble with iMovie 10.0.2, but it could also be my computer. I am running a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with Maverick. I have a MacMini that I would like to transfer things over to. aybe I just can't process and that is why I am having so many issues with iMovie. Regardless, I cannot find my iMovie Projects or Events in the finder and cannot seem to figure out a way to find transfer them. They seem to have been lumped into a new library (similar to iPhoto) and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Any ideas?

Yeah, since they switched to using the iLibrary format I didn't recognize things. I figured it out and was able to transfer things. Funny enough, I was trying to solve for the problem described in the other thread.
Sadly, trying a different comp (my MacMini) I was not able to make those darned clips work. They just seem doomed. Thanks for all the help though! I shall now give you more points!

  • Why can't I purchase imovie 2011?

I'm trying to find a simple movie editor ( not expensive ) and my imovie is from 2008 which lacks the slow motion effect I need. I simply just wanted to purchase the most recent imovie but it said I had to have mac OSX 10.7.4  or higher... This is really frustrating. I have a project at school and all I need is to simply slow down my movie! I'm totally willing to buy (since I can not find a free or other cheap movie editor anywhere) can someone please help me? Is my mac really too old ... I just recently got snow leapord on it and it's been working beautifuly. My macbook pro is from 2008.

I'm really not sure if I am on the list or not. I'm on a macbook pro from early 2008. That is all I know, again this isn't my normal laptop.
Then why not go out and buy a notebook that you are more familar with and theat you can install the programs you are use to.
Have you run Software Update on the Mac? It may allow you get get a newer version of iMovie that may have the feature you are looking for.
Personally I would not put any money into that 2008 Mac as all of them have a faulty graphic chip in them and will die at some point.
    MacBook Pro: NVidia Failure
So take whatever money you may spend on software for that Mac and buy something that will work for you.

  • Why can't I install iMovie 7.1.4?

i have a Mac 10.4.11 with imovie hd 6.0.6. so i downloaded imovie 7.1.4, but when i opened the installer, it said "An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location /Applications." why is this happening and what can i do?

If you downloaded the iMovie 7.1.4 update from the Apple website, it only works with older iMovie 7 versions. As you have iMovie HD, you will have to upgrade to iMovie 7 first, included in iLife '08.
iLife '08 is the most recent version for Mac OS X 10.4.11, and you can buy it at Amazon or eBay > http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iLife-08-OLD-VERSION/dp/B000BX5JQG

  • Why can't I make a project progressive?

When I open a new project in Encore, I want to set it to progressive. But no matter what I try, the Video Transcoding settings are greyed out and I can't change it from Lower Fields First. This has left me with jumpy videos, and I have no idea how to correct it. I've tried googling for solutions but this doesn't seem to be a widespread issue, so I'm guessing I've missed something. Can anybody help? Any advice would be appreciated.

Export from Premiere with the desired settings for mpeg2-dvd.
Import the two files into Encore.
Encore will  be set to Don't Transcode for the files.
    Make menu and burn.
    That should do the trick.

I can't get itunes to open from my desktop. When I click on the icon nothing happens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing. Why isn't itunes working??

On my PC I had a problem where the iTunes store would only display a blank white page, I managed to display my account settings, but nothing for music, etc
I treid this and it has immediately sorted it out...
start>programs>accessories> right click on Command Prompt and run as Administrator
then simply enter 'netsh winsock reset' and return
after restarting the PC and loading up iTunes the store was there fine  ;-)
I posted this on some other threads and it has been successful for the other people that have tried it

  • Why can't I download iMovie and iPhoto?

    Hello,
After upgrading to Yosemite I found that Internet connection was slow, and dodgy, so I took it to the Apple Store and re-installed Mavericks
Internet worked fine, it was fast again, etc.
I tried to open iMovie and iPhoto
    Not there
    I checked in Launchpad
    Not there either.
I checked on the App Store.
    Yup.
    $19 for iMovie
What is this? I was using iMovie and iPhoto before Yosemite, but now I can't use it.
I shouldn't lose my Apps because Apple made a dodgy update

I don't think it's a dodgy upgrade, a handful report issues with their Mac and millions have no issues whatever. It works perfectly here.
If you had the iLife apps before, they should be listed in your account in the Purchases pane for download. However, the Mac App Store usually carries the most recent version. The most recent version doesn't run on Mavericks. You should always make a backup of your Mac, especially before something so major as an OS X upgrade. Then you would have the Mavericks versions to restore to your Mac again running Mavericks.
Not sure what you can do at this point.
