Why did my data usage skyrocket with Ellipsis Jetpack?

My old wifi went down and the Verizon office sold me an Ellipsis Jetpack. My data usage immediately started going up although my Internet habits remained the same. I turn the Jetpack off when I'm not logged in and I changed the setting to only allow one user. I changed Facebook to not automatically start videos and I hit pause on every video that comes up on news feeds. I feel like I'm getting ripped off. I saw some discussion here earlier (can't find it now) that others are having the same problems but saw no answer from Verizon. Also, there are no diagnostics available online to see what is causing my usage to be so high and someone suggested that Verizon is blocking access to the information. Would I be better off finding a different wireless internet provider?

Same thing happened to me.  Can't understand why.  We'll see if they charge overages.

  • Data usage skyrocketing and I can't figure out why

I've been watching my AT&T data usage recently. I have the original iPhone and had expected to replace it this year. That will apparently cause me to lose the unlimited data plan, as per AT&T's latest announcement.
For some reason my usage, which used to run about 70-100MB/month, is getting towards the 1 GB level and climbing. Last month it was 770 MB. My bill details only show data "out," nothing "in." Most nights around 2:30 a.m there is a lot of activity, anywhere from 60KB to 80,000KB At that time the phone is asleep (as I am) and charging -- but not connected to a computer.
I've turned off Push email (which disables "find my Phone.") I have all app notifications turned off. My phone does not have GPS. I have wi-fi at home, but a lot of data transfers seem to be at times during the day when I believe I am connected via wi-fi. Except for the occasional App Store purchase on the fly, I download from iTunes to my Mac and sync with USB cable.
I do have 4 email accounts besides MobileMe and I retrieve mail manually to save battery life.
With the 2G iPhone on Edge, I cannot do streaming video and other things that I would want to do with a more capable phone. I am paying $99/year for MobileMe and have been advised to cripple it. AT&T customer support suggested that apps are the problem, but gave me no guidance on figuring out which apps might be the culprit(s). My understanding is that the iPhone doesn't allow apps to run in the background. I know Apple doesn't update without permission. I am not subscribed to any AT&T services that I know about.
I just want to understand how this all works. If there are some apps that are misbehaving, how do I figure out which ones? I do not want to get an expensive new iPhone and find out I can't afford to enjoy it.
I have restored the phone to factory settings twice in the past four months on advice from Apple.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have the exact same issue, as do some other people at the end of this macrumors thread. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=576888
I have MobileMe and 3 other email accounts but I don't think that's the issue. My 3GS is consistently doing accessing the 3G network middle of the night when I have a full WiFi signal from my home network. There is no reason that I should have any data activity during this time.
A Mac Genius told me that when the iPhone goes to sleep, wi-fi is disconnected. This means the phone is then on the cellular network. In my mind that is a design flaw. The phone goes to sleep to reduce energy usage, but the cell network uses more energy than wi-fi. That's a separate question from the data use issue, which is relevant for several reasons: cost, user control and privacy.

  • Are there known data usage problems with iPhone 4S?

I just got my first iPhone. I barely know how to use the thing and pretty much only use it for checking my work email. I blew through 7 GB of data in 20 days. From everyone I've talked to there is no way I have done this based on my limited usage. So something is running in the background that I can't control. I've turned off the cellular setting and told it to only use wifi, and when I'm at home it appears to be using my wifi. I read some other comments here saying it could be a problem with the iOS, but it didn't seem like a definite answer. Any other ideas?

Last month I checked the data usage on my iPhone 4S three days after the start of a new billing cycle. To my shock I discovered that I had been charged with about 193 MB of usage. That was very odd because 193 MB is well above what my total data usage is each month. Immediately contacted AT&T Customer Service--twice. Each time they could not provide an explanation as to why the data usage was charged to my phone. All they could tell me was that all of the 193 MB were charged on the very day the new billing cycle started. They did try to sell me a larger data plan.
I thought maybe this was just an odd thing that couldn’t be explained. Kept a close eye on my data usage for the reminder of the billing cycle and didn’t have another large data charge. I still stayed well under the 300 MB plan limit even with the unexpected 193 MB of usage on day one.
Then my wife checks her iPhone 4S data usage on day one of this month's billing cycle at about 9 AM. She finds that she has been charged with 30 MB of data usage when she hasn't even used her phone. Again, 9 AM; day one of new billing cycle; 30 MB of usage; no active applications running. How can this be? She contacted AT&T Customer Service and once again they were no help. She made two phone calls and also spoke with one CS Manager, but no one could explain why she has been charged for the 30 MB. Anyone else having this problem? Please help us resolve this if you know what to do? Extremely frustrating to be charged for data we know we are not using. Getting no help from AT&T Customer No-Service.

  • Why is my data usage increasing multiple times a day when I'm on wi-fi?

For both myself on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and my girlfriend on an iPhone 5c, both of which we got just a week ago, we see our data usage total increasing several times a day, typically in very small amounts, occasionally larger.  Her increases are about 10x larger than mine overall.  All of this happens when we're each on wi-fi so I wouldn't expect to see these increases then.  Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it?  I'm guessing it may be some sort of auto update processing happening in the background, but I don't know that for sure and don't know what else could be causing this.

After talking to 4 different Verizon reps today, nobody could pinpoint the
cause of this.  I was mostly just told not to worry about it.  My wifi has
seemingly been very solid both here and at work; I don't notice dropouts
when I'm doing other things on it.  But I did disable mobile data on the S4
and observed that the data usage did not increase any further after I did
that.  So I guess I'll either use that as my primary mode of operation, and
just manually reenable it when I know I'll be away from a wifi signal, or
turn mobile data back on and live with the ongoing hits until it becomes a
storage issue.  At the rate we're using data thus far, that shouldn't
    happen.

  • Why did the date change to september 21 when it is realy august 21?!?!

I tried cropping a picture and suddenly my phone turned off then turned back on by itself. When it turned back on i noticed the date changed to september! Why did this happen? And how can i change back the date?

This has occured on my iPhone 4 16GB three times this morning.  Once at 8:15a, then at 10:30a, and just now at 12:00p today (all times are Central).
    Device:  iPhone 4 16GB (MC318LL)
    Carrier:  AT&T
    iOS Version: 5.1.1 (9B206)
Turning the phone off and on does not fix the problem.  Could be an issue with the date/time info when queried from the carrier. All three times I was on 3G and had a weak signal. Once the date changed, 3G was lost and then went to 2G (EDGE) and then 3G was restored.  I am wondering if it will happen at 2:00p also.

  • **Why soooo much data usage??**

    Hi everyone...
I am curious to know (when you go into your settings and then "cellular") why is there a need for data usage for MY MUSIC?? CONTACTS?? PHOTOS?? CALENDAR?? I mean especially music - that is DOWNLOADED to my phone so why the need for data?? Same for the others.
And are they USING DATA just by being there?? Or only when I like go into my cameral roll, or open my contacts??
I've always been very confused about how cellular data works. And I am currently staying where there is NO Wi Fi - NONE whatsoever. They use ethernet for the computer. Therefore, when using my phone (here - no Wi Fi) my data has been going QUICK! So I am now all the more curious as to how it all works and if there is anything I can do.
    Thanks so much.

Contacts, as an example, would use data when the contacts are synced with iCloud. Note that you can turn off cellular data usage for individual items such as Contacts, Calendar, etc on that same page (Settings > Cellular > Use Cellluar Data For) just by tapping the switch to the right of each so that it goes from green to white.

  • Data usage skyrocketing?

My second line all the sudden started using data at rediculous rates. Almost 1GB in 5 days. I only pay for 4 GB and have never gone over. I tried deleting apps and turning off background app refresh, but I don't know what to do.

    Melodyb,
Let's get your data back under control. Which iPhone do you have? Are you running the current software? Have you used our Data Utilization tool to help see what's using your data? Data Utilization is a free online tool that helps you better understand how your device is using data. It divides your data usage into general categories, and it estimates your data usage in each category. Visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/data-utilization-faqs/ for more info.

  • Why is my data usage so high?

Using Verizon's data calculator, 5G should me more than sufficient for the limited PC usage.  In one week, the data usage information indicates we have used over half in one week.  There are several entries in the breakdown for small amounts during the midnight hours, when computers are not in use and shut down.
I am very disappointed with the information provided before this plan was purchased, based on what we expected for our data needs.  By increasing the data amount our bill will increase 30.00  There are many sources that indicate 2G should be ample for each of us in the household (2).  So, I am not sure the calculations are correct that are being tracked with the Jetpack system.  Here is the data calculator, I entered more than twice the expected usage for the two laptops combined.  We download no music, videos, movies.  Simply check email and browse the web.  How do you explain this?

5/21/2014 Data Calculator - Verizon Wireless

The VZW Data Calculator is a tool designed to help estimate and visualize data usage.  Most folks have no idea what data is or how it is consumed on their devices.  The data calculator tool is not accurate on any front other than to give you a general idea how much data a particular function consumes under normal circumstances.
VZW provides its users with a limited data usage report that does not break down individual application or device usage into meaningful results.  What you get instead is a power bill like summary of your usage in terms of how much was used at certain times of the day.  After all VZW is not in the computer support business, they provide you with the pipe and users determine how best to consume the data.  A leaky hose or application is not the responsibility of VZW to discover and correct.
When it comes to the actual usage of your VZW device there isn't a whole lot out there that can show you how you are consuming your data plan.  Some monitor applications and devices can be setup ahead of time, but all they are good for is reviewing the data that flows through them.  Special care must be taken when designing and setting up monitors to make sure you capture everything.  Monitors are generally not user friendly to setup or understand and often require detailed readings of numerous logs to determine where problems are, if the monitor can even capture them at all.
The current best practices for data usage are as follows:
    1. Power down your VZW device when it is not being used
    2. Secure your VZW device with a custom SSID, WiFi and Admin password
    - This should be in compliance with security best practices for strong passwords
    - A good site to reference is https://howsecureismypassword.net/
    3. Take care to disable and shutdown any automatic updates on your devices
    4. Be cautious to view and download audio/video content on low resolution
In most cases high data usage is not an intentional doing on the users behalf.  It is the background applications and services installed on the connected devices that run rampant and chew up your data plan without your knowledge or consent.

  • Why the large data usage

my son's iphone usage says his phone used 10mb today alone. He's connected to our home wireless network when at home and doesn't surf or use his phone while away from home. What could be causing the large cellular data usage numbers?

Make sure it's backdated. If you don't do that then it won't go into effect until next billing cycle. Most common mistake people do.
    Things to consider:
Updates set on automatic on laptops and computer will randomly use your data. The biggest day is usually the first Thursday(IIRC) of every month on window devices(or whatever day after that you decide to turn them on). Also apps will auto update themselves(chrome for example. Plugins as well). To help reduce data usage it's best to make sure to turn auto updates off and manually check them.

  • I am having a data excess usage issue with my Jetpack although I did not use the VZW network at all.

Background: My home does not have access to landline internet and I am relying on a Verizon Jetpack device rather than satellite cable for internet access.  Within my JetPack wireless network I have several devices connected, iPADs, PC’s, printer, etc. (up to 5 devices can be connected with my system).  Recently, I had one device within my immediate wireless network that I needed to transfer data via FTP to another local device within my immediate network.  The receiving device FTP’d data from device (198.168.1.42) to local IP (address 192.168.1.2).  To understand the data path a Trace rout for this transfer is 198.168.1.42 (source) to 198.168.1.1 (Jetpack) to 192.168.1.2 (receiver).  Note that the VZW network ((cloud)/4G network) was NOT used in this transfer nor was any VZW bandwidth used for this transfer (of course less the typical overhead status/maintenance communications that happen regardless). Use of the VZW bandwidth would be something like downloading a movie from Netflix, (transferring data from a remote site, through the VZW network, into the Jetpack and to the target device).  I also understand if ones devices have auto SW updates that would also go against the usage as well.  I get that.  My understanding of my usage billing is based data transfer across the VZW network.
Now to the problem: To my surprise I was quite substantially charged for the “internal” direct transfer of this data although I didn’t use the VZW network at all.  This does not seem to be right, and doesn’t make much sense to me.  Usage is should be based on the VZW network not a local Wi-Fi.  In this case, Verizon actually gets free money from me without any use of or impact to the VZW network.  Basically this is a VERY expensive rental for the jetpack device, which I bought anyway.  Considering this, I am also charged each time I print locally.  Dive into this further, I am also interested in knowing what is the overhead (non-data) communications between the jetpack router and devices and how much does that add up to over time?
Once I realized I was getting socked in bandwidth, as a temp solution I found an old Wi-Fi router, created a separate Wi-Fi network off the Jetpack, but the billing damage was already done.  Switching each device back and forth to FTP and print is a hassle and there should be no reason the existing hardware couldn’t handle this and charges aligned with VSW usage. Is purposely intended by Verizon? Is this charging correct? And can I get some help with this?
Logically, usage should be based on VZW network usage not internal transfers.  All transfers between IP addresses 192.168 are by default internal.  Any data that needs to leave the internal network are translated in to the dynamic IP addresses established by the VZW network.  That should be very easily detected for usage. In the very least, this fact needs to be clearly identified and clarified to users of the Jetpack.  How would one use a local network and not get socked with usage charges?  Can one set up a Wi-Fi network with another router, hardwire directly from the router to the Jetpack so that only data to and from the VZW network is billed? I might be able to figure out how to have the jetpack powered on but disable the VZW connection, but I don’t want to experiment and find out that the internal transfers are being logged and the log sent after the fact anyway once I connect…. A reasonable solution should be that users be able to use the router functions of the Jetpack (since one has to buy the device anyway) and only be billed for VZW usage.
Your help in this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Cell Data Usage SKYROCKETED Out of Nowhere (possibly after iOS update) on iPhone 4. What gives?

The problem is actually happening on my wife's phone. She has never used more than maybe 30 megs of data in a given month, and she has had the 3G and the 4 for close to 4 years now. Her phone is either at our house or her office 95% of the time which both have wifi of which she is connected on. All of the sudden, we get texts and emails saying her data is at 65% of 200megs after about 10 days of the month. Then we have a three day weekend where her phone never leaves our house and somehow there was about 50 megs of data used over that span according to ATT website.
After much research I found out that if the phone is not plugged in and goes into "sleep" mode, it switches back to 3G (cell data) in order to conserve battery life (This should be an option or something, seems ridiculous). So push notifications and possibly email updates are using cell data rather than wifi.
Even with all that, I cannot think of anything that would be causing at some times over 30 megs a day being transferred. She is a light email user, her phone is set to download headings only, we have her iCloud stuff shut off, etc.
As one last bit, two days ago we turned her cell data completely off in the settings. She turned it back on for maybe 5 mins while sitting at a restaurant to check facebook, and ATT says there was 13 megs of data sent.
Any ideas? I really dont want to start shelling out more money for what seems like a friggin backend scam to me.

    Hi Andrey,
I think I have figured it out. It has to do with my iCloud account. After a lot of reasearch I found a bunch of people with the same problem, and the fix for now is to COMPLETELY DELETE your iCloud account. Simply turning everything off does not work. I immediately did this on my wife and my phones and everything went back to normal.
It appears to be a bug, because mine was only supposed to be updating my "notes" which shouldnt take 30 megs a day. Hope they fix it soon.

  • Why did my macbook break? (with video)

Greetings folks. I'm trying to figure out why my macbook broke after 6 years. Basically it turns on and something is wrong with the display then it just turns off slowly. This video from youtube shows how it is broken.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4ib9GR8rMg . Thank you.

    Hi Macciezw,
It seems your MacBook is struggling to boot up. The video was helpful, great idea. You may want to consider performing a PRAM reset. I have linked to an article which explains how to perform the reset:
