Why did my iMac wired keyboard keys 4, 5, 6 (number pad), +, and up-arrow, (right)shift keys suddenly stopped working?

I have already tried restarting my computer and keys will just not work and I have seen many other people have EXACTLY same problem with EXACTLY same keys as I do, but I have found any answer.
Currently I have Mac OS X 10.8.5

You have noticed they are all in a row.   This normally happens where a spillage has taken place.   Has the keyboard had liquid contact?

  • [SOLVED] Thinkpad Fn keys suddenly stopped working

I'm on ThinkPad Edge 14. For some reason(s) unknown, my Fn keys stopped working after I restarted Arch a few hours ago.
I've checked the BIOS, everything is fine (no settings unchanged). I tried checking if X (I'm on Gnome 3) can still detect the keys using xev (as outlined here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … oard_Keys) and the Fn key is detected as "XF86WakeUp" witht the keycode "151", so at least nothing is wrong with the actual physical button.
What's more weird is that, I tried booting from another Hard Drive into Ubuntu, and the Fn key also didn't work (it has worked fine previously). What could be causing this?
EDIT: Even weirder, Fn keys aren't working in Windows as well (I dual boot). BIOS's still unchanged, and this started happening when I was working with Arch, so I'm quite sure this can be fixed through Arch. Problem is, I don't know where to start. How can Arch affect Ubuntu & Windows when I didn't change BIOS?

    I found out the problem!
I tried checking the Lenovo forums about the problem and found this: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Ed … d-p/323077
Apparently, it's possible that the Fn keys suddenly stopped working for no clear reason. In my case, it happened when I was on Arch, so I thought the problem was with Arch. Anyway, I updated the BIOS from Lenovo's site and everything's working fine now.
    Thanks!

  • The keyboard and trackpad to my 2008 MacBook suddenly stopped working, what's wrong with it/ what should I do to fix it?

The keyboard and trackpad to my 2008 MacBook suddenly stopped working. I've restarted the computer several times and no help. I had some keyboard maintenance done a few months ago at a repair shop so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. What should I do?

First thing I would try would be to remove the battery from your MacBook, connect the computer to it's power adapter and start up, then see if the keyboard and trackpad work normally. Some older batteries have been known to expand and interfere with keyboard and trackpad. If this works, replace the battery.
    Best of luck.

  • Hello, my backspace and enter keys suddenly stopped working. I have done a PRAM reset and used the keyboard viewer to see if the buttons work and they don't.  The PRAM reset didn't work  either

Dear All,  the backspace and enter keys on my wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working.  Im using OS 10.7.5 and have tried a PRAM reset which didn't work.  I also used the keyboard viewer to see if the keys worked on that but they don't.  This is driving me mad, can anyone please tell me what to do?  It happened just after an update but this could be a coincidence.  Thank you for your time

For my computers, though some of them support BlueTooth devices and accessories,
my preference and economy of standard, is to have wired USB and also use powered
    USB hubs for accessories.
I've used USB wired keyboards and mouse products; and some I've bought from the
    original owners who had upgraded to BT, and never used the new Apple USB model;
so I have spares of these on-hand since they seldom fail, but do work when BT won't.
    {A SMC reset should not cause a problem, or seldom has; but can solve some.}
In my opinion, the wired USB keyboard is an essential accessory, if not a necessary
primary means of user access on a continuous basis. At least until the wires fail...!

  • Keys Suddenly Stopped Working

My wife's black MacBook keyboard has suddenly stopped functioning correctly, it had slept overnight and had stopped working, no shutdowns or restarts. The 7 u j m and the ; ' keys are unresponsive in higher and lower case. I have tried resetting the PRAM and have updated it to OSX 10.5.8 but this hasn't resolved the issue.
What worries me is that the 7 u j m keys are in a descending diagonal line and the ; and ' keys are next to each other so its looking like a hardware issue but why would all six keys stop working all at once and not start failing one after the other?
Thanks for any advice in advance.

This is precisely the reason that 7ujm would all quit working at once, the fact that they are all in one column. The keyboard wiring is laid out in a matrix of rows and columns. If one column conductor fails then the entire column has to fail. This still can be failed hardware but not the keyboard itself, rather the circuitry that reads the keyboard.
However, I would still give odds of 9:1 that it is a software problem and thusly solvable with no expense. Try logging into another User Account. Create one if need be.

  • Two keys suddenly stop working

The end key/right arrow key doesn't work. When i hold down the left shift key to get an uppercase i, the combination doesn't work. It does work with the right shift pressed.
Any idea what is going on? Everything worked fine until today.
    Thanks!

Hi, Mac85. Connect an external USB keyboard to your Powerbook and see whether those keys work properly on it. If they do, your Powerbook's keyboard has a problem. Do you have TechTool Pro or TechTool Deluxe? If so, run it and see whether any hardware issues are reported. I don't know whether or not Apple Hardware Test will detect bad keys on the keyboard; I think probably not. If the keyboard is faulty, it will need to be replaced unless you can be happy using an external keyboard.

  • When on grooveshark my keys suddenly stop working ie. can't type in search bar, backspace is suddenly back a page etc. A comp restart fixes the problem.

seems only to happen when on that one specific site, it seems like my keys are reset to be shortcuts, very frustrating.

'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''

  • Two keys on external keyboard suddenly stop working, cannot log in

I have an iMac with Snow Leopard, USB keyboard (not wireless). From one moment to the next the "a" and "s" keys suddenly stopped working. I checked in the Universal Access and Speech panes as others with similar problems were advised  and this was not the problem. I tried restarting the computer to see if that would help but it did not, and now I can't log in because these letters are in my password. HELP!!!!

Try another USB keyboard. (most any brand will work)
Personally I use Logitech MK120 - USB Keyboard & Mouse Combo's with all my Mac's.

  • Modifier Keys suddenly not working with Numberpads

I favor the use of a numberpad and as such i have been using a third party USB Numberpad.  I also have a Apple wired keyboard that comes with the number pad.
All these while, the modifier keys (shift, alt, ctrl) works with the numberpad and the numberpad section of the apple keyboard.  Somehow, recently, not sure when, it no longer works.
I've tried to reset default on the modifier key section but it just doesn't work... This is really frustrating.  the only thing i remember installing lately is "bettertouchtool" and buying a magic mouse.
Bettertouchtool is not usually running unless i choose to run it, so i'm not sure how that affecs it, not am i sure if totally removing it via a third party app helps.
    Appreciate HELP! PLEASE!

i am having the same problem.  It just started a few days ago.  Im thinkin its a problem with the most recent update.  Im goin to contact apple to let them know.   I'll post again when i hear something.  If anyone figures it out before then please let us know!

I cant use the X key on my imac wired keyboard, the key viewer shows the two commands keys pressed when i hit x and the caps lock light is always on....not really sure what happened, but i didnt do anything different from my daily stuff
just an update....when i hit the right command key it respond normal (cmd v cmd c...etc) but when i hit the left command key it shows the x and two commands pressed as well as it delete what i'm working on i.e like backspace but takes out everything at once

    Hi Moe,
Sounds mostly likje a bad KB, do you have another to test with?
    Or...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Return key on iMac Keyboard Has Suddenly Stopped Working

I'm using an iMac purchased in April 2007 and it is using the older white Apple keyboard (model A1048).
All of a sudden, after a shutdown and a startup, the Return key has stopped working (the Enter key on the keypad still works).
Nothing was spilled on it and no one has hit it too hard. I popped off the key to check if there was anything that could explain why it wasn't working. No dirt and the key depresses properly.
I also took the keyboard over to a Dell PC running WinXP and tested it there as well. Every key worked except for the Return key.
So, my question is, is there some serious hardware flaw that basically means that I need to get a new keyboard or is there some other explanation and method for correcting the issue?

Having the same issue, would love to know if you were able to resolve it. I'm also not able to use Tab, Return, and F12 for some reason.

    Just updated details - os x 10.8.5 .....
found an answer that could have been problem with CPU and a runaway application (possibly Bin Weevils) which my son was running at the time.  I shall check the activity monitor next time to see what percentage cpu is being used..
