Why did they change this forum area

From what I see here and from what I read in the rumors columns, Apple is making wholesale changes in everything.  The old forum was very easy for me to use and I could find what I needed and ask questions and get answers.  Things here are far less intuitive.
Is there any way we can get them to go back to the old ways?  I really know the answer before I ask it.  From what I've seen Steve Jobs has a vision of what things should be.  Sometimes he is right and at other times he is not.  But right or wrong, he is the autocrat and the customers are made to like it.  Or what?  I really cannot imagine going back to the Windows world and I don't find the Linux world with a many ready made profession applications as I find in Apple or even Windows.  Gimp is a great product.  But it still doesn't touch Photoshop (even Elements) or Aperture or Lightroom.  I don't see those apps on Linux.
I know this sounds like heresy, but if you had heard about some of the things I've heard about Lion, many of you would (will) shudder.  It is like they are taking my 24" iMac with 8 GB of RAM and TBs of hard drive and making it into a large model iPad.  I love the iPad.  But it doesn't do the jobs I need to do nor for the jobs it does, does it do as well.  Someday, I see the world of iPad and the full size Mac merging.  But they aren't there yet, but they are treating it as if they had.  We ARE NOT in a POST PC (a Mac is also a Personal Computer just not a Windoz computer) world.  We are moving there.

I've compared the iPad 2 to the Kindle and the Nook.  I have two daughters and each have one of them.  They are very impressive and the eInk is quite impressive.  If I needed to read in natural light more, I would be dependant on eInk.  But that is not the case.  I use a lot of apps, and btw, none of the apps I've installed are games - I don't have the time or energy for gaming.  I work a very complicated schedule and I found an iPhone / iPad add that keeps track of it very well so I can tell what days I work two months from now when setting up the next doctor's appointment.  My Banks and my credit card companies have very nice applications for managing these as well as Pay Pal.  Applications that let me play my favorite radio stations on my iPad or iPhone.  Accordance bible program which is by far the best Bible study program and research tool out there works very well on the iPad and with some crowding on the iPhone.  the reduced capability iWorks (Numbers and Pages) that let me do certain work on my iPad.  Has been very valuable.  Applications which help me find the next bus in a city and find its expected arrival time at a particular stop.  These are only a quick list of the things I like the most that I have here.  Android is a challenge but for now, Android suffers from versions.  Many people cannot load the latest version of Android because of details of the hardware platform they have.  I remember those days with Windows on non-IBM hardware very painfully.  Linus also suffers that problem too because some of the big PC makers (HP in particular) sell hardware that took so many shortcuts that drivers for Linux are not available.  Android is something to watch and some people are quite happy with it.  The disadvantage it has is that without the control Apple exerts on what can be loaded on non-jail broken iOS devices, malware can creep in even more easily.  But Android itself isn't currently offering EInk as far as I know.
I expect the EInk devices will move in time into the tablet market.  It is an obvious move.  But the investment to do that and the low success rate from a number of courageous companies is daunting.  The only explanation I have for Apple's dominance is that they were the fastest to the market and their products do seem to work as advertised with a few well advertised missteps.

iOS 5 used to allow Airplay between iPad (WiFi) and Apple TV (Ethernet) as long as they were on the same network, i.e. connected to the same wired/wireless router. In iOS 6, now both the iPad and the Apple TV have to be on the same network and both have to be connected using WiFi ? Why did they change this ? Means that the iPad and the Apple TV box both have to be in range of the wireless router when this wasn't a restriction before. Apple TV could be anywhere as long as it was connected to the same wireless router via ethernet cable. Seems like an unnecessary thing to restrict.

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

  • Why did they change the design of the calendar on the iCloud software for PC.The new design looks like something from the 1980's.

Why did they change the layout of the calendar on iCloud software for Pc's. The new calendar looks like it was designed in the 1980's.

Welcome to the new look of Apple.

  • Why did they change itunes. i do not like it. miss the album scroll

why did they change itunes. i do not like it. miss the album scroll and ablum cover in bootom corner.

I love the new version of Grid view but some of the other changes feel like they still need some fine tuning. And I miss cover flow even if I didn't use it that often...
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
Ctrl+B to turn on the menu bar
Ctrl+S to turn on the sidebar (your device should be listed here as before)
Ctrl+/ to turn on the status bar
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
Should you still feel the need to roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and suppporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

  • Scrolling - why did they change it?

Why did they reverse touch pad scrolling with OS X Lion?  The old way seemed perfectly reasonable and intuitive.  I guess I can get used (eventually) the reverse, but why the change?  Instead of using my fingers to move my window up and down over the doucment, I now use my fingers to move the document up and down below my window.  I really don't like it.  Did they ask anybody before they made this change?
    Hey!  Who moved my Cheese!!!!
    Tombo
(sort of like Rambo, only different)

Because they are trying to do away with the scroll bar on the right side of document windows. The old way the "scroll device" was conceptually linked to the indicator in the scroll bar so to scroll down you were trying to move the indicator (in the scroll bar) downward by pulling your finger towards yourself.
The new way is doing away with the scroll bar and linking the "scroll device" to the document itself. So now when you want to scroll down you do it by pushing the document upward (by pushing your finger away from yourself).

  • Why did they change the shape of IPAD AIR? This isnt practical

i've noticed that typing on the new ipad air is a burden and hurts my hand because they have made the width larger than previous models.
I really wish they would leave well enough alone.
Anyone else have this issue when typing on an ipad air?

Add me to the list as someone who is beyond happy with the new size of iPad Air.  It's the single best change to the device yet!  And to the OP, maybe your ruler has different measurements than mine.  iPad Air is not wider than previous devices.

  • Why did they change maps  to mobimaps which are awful

I received an update on maps+ that changed it to mobimaps. Streetview does not function like maps+ , and the little man gets stuck when you drag it to the street
This is a step backwards ,and WHY?

Maps+ is not an Apple product.  You should likely ask the developer what is going on with their app

  • Why did they do this to GB? This isnt GB anymore!

since 2004  i have adored this easy to use Application to make music,  which i have done so  because it was straightforward, simple, intuitive,
and without a steep learning curve.
A manual was not really necessary.
a few questions to the top 5 peeps and i was well on my way. till yesterday when i down loaded Mavericks and then this new
    interface.
I realize i am not alone here. If i wanted " hard " i would have gone LOGIC EXPRESS which i tried and gave up on.
Going back to GB was such a delight.
    I realize i can stay with 6.0.5!
I just feel let down and disappointed and forced to learn this new monster to reap the benefits of DRUMMER etc.
I just keep wondering  why Apple made this jump and changed the interface which looks like im using LOGIC EXPRESS again
    and dont want to.
I guess i have to grow up or grow down to the younger generation who might not be challenged by this new puzzling music machine with
loops or data area that dont move easily lke in GB 11  and pressing Z doesnt make the cursor move back to the beginning.
wow!  i would have loved more software instruments/ loops/ maybe even a drummer device added to the old GB.
but why this major change?  did you ask for this?
Ill wait for all the MANUALS, the how to videos, the time wasted to do all of this is sickening.
    aint it?
    thanks for listening

I seldom can do any real work while the thing spins. When I'm exporting decent sized pdfs InDesign may as well be not working since it is so sluggish.
There have been maybe 3 instances where I took advantage of background tasks and they were all on pdfs that save out fast enough to where the time savings is so minimal. The amount of time it takes for the panel to render is longer than the amount of time it takes for the PDF to export in those cases.
Most of the time when I'm exporting a pdf it is because I'm done working on a layout. I don't need to continue working on another layout when it is exporting. More often if I'm doing anything when a pdf is exporting it will be in another application (composing email for the proof I'm exporting or filling out billings or maybe reviewing vendor specs). What am I going to gain exporting a pdf as a background task? If the export takes longer than a couple of minutes it is going to bog down the application, if it is going to take less I'm just splitting my attention for a miniscule amount time.
The thing is also just ugly. Why does it use a completely different font than the other panels? Why does it only show about 12 characters of a file name? It just looks out of place like something a sophomore in college made and it's mandatory.
Also on big pdfs the progress bar is of use to no one. It can say 99% for minutes while it's really just copying the resulting pdf. Canceling is hit and miss. Books export with the good old dialog box, why can't I just set everything to use the old dialog?
Yes, yes I do want the progress bar. The panel is an interface abomination.

  • Why did they change Pages icon??? - it was the most beautiful I ever saw!

I wonder why version 5.0.1 of Pages (that which comes with the new Mavericks OS has been changed. The previous one (an ink bottle with a stylographic pen) was the most beautiful icon I have ever seen. I particularly appreciated the transparency of the glass! And the icon was also functional, so different from anything else in shape and color and so nicely contrasted resulting in high visibility.
Can someone tell the reason of this choice? Can I get back to the previous version of Pages (keeping the new OS)  to have my beloved icon back?
    thanks
    Dario

I suspect that they simply changed the icon so that it was clear you were using version 5 of Pages and not the earlier version.
I agree that the new version is lacking many of the advanced options of the old version but I am sticking with it and finding ways to do most things I need to in the new version.
As I share password protected files with others using Word on Windows PC's, the new facility to password protect .doc files and then open them in pages is a godsend.  I spent half my life borrowing my wife's laptop to add passwords to documents via word, or strip passwords so I could work on the documents in Pages.  Now no longer have this issue Hurrah!!
By the way, if you had Pages before and have installed the new Pages 5.0.1, then look in you applications folder, you should have the old version still there and can use it without needing to do a time-machine rollback.

  • Why did they change the iphone 5 charger?

I am pretty annoyed that apple changed the charging port on the new iphone 5.  Now all of my charging and docking stations are pretty much worthless and I have heard nothing but bad things about the adapter they make from the new lightening port to a 30pin dock.
Anybody else having this issue or found a working solution?  I hate carrying around tons of adapter cables.
I feel like I am the fool for buying the newest apple products.  I am now regreting supporting apple so much in this case.

Your Right. Now people have to buy new docks and everything. The adapter will break your phone or itself real easy and the charger is to small.
Apple is turning into a pc company. You have either a PC or Mac now there the same. Stop making basic mistakes to turn a buck.

  • Did they change this site??

Is it my browser, or has this site changed? It looks totally different (except for this page I'm currently typing into to create new question). I had a browser bookmark for the site, from which I was able to view a list of my discussions. I no longer see this option.  Now how do I get to the list of my discussions, and is there a link that explains how to navigate this new layout (if in fact it is a new layout and not bookmark gone bad)?
    Thanks.

The list of people who have posted in this thread is a "who's who" of LR experts and regulars on the forum.  How amazing that we are all equally confused by the new forum software interface.  What was wrong with the old forum software?  It seems to have worked well.
If I go to my Inbox & Activity, under Activity there is a long list of threads that I never looked at and have no interest in.  I can't figure out how to delete these.  It took way too long to figure out what a "Connection Stream" is.  I don't want one.
What I do want is the old way to receive email notifications for message threads I am interested in.  When I click Follow in the upper right, it says Follow In > Connections Stream and it is checked.  Is there a way to have the Inbox selection checked by default (instead of Connections Stream)?  It seems that if Inbox is selected, and a corresponding box in Preferences is checked, then I get an email when a new message is posted in the thread.  The old way was so simple.
Has anyone found a user guide or help file that explains everything?  I searched and couldn't find one.
    John

  • Why did they change the size of the icalendar (now 10x13")?

I just received the first icalendar I created for Christmas gifts and it is HUGE!! Why? No need IMHP. They now require so much wall or counter space. I personally like the original size. Your thoughts?

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback is the route to the Developers for your feedback.

  • Apple Mouse: Reverse Wheel Button (why did they change it?)

    Hi All,
My Macbook just rebooted from Snow Leopard -> Lion upgrade. I also took the three updates after the upgrade.
Annoying as it sounds, my Apple mouse now scrolls in reverse. Scrolling the button away from the chair moves the screen to the bottom rather than the top, and vice-versa.
Any ideas on how to get the mouse to behave normally?
    Jeff

    Hey everyone,
The reason that apple calls this "Natural" scolling is because it is natural.  Take a sheet of paper and put it on you desk (yes, a real sheet of paper, not a virtual one and a real desk!).  Now try to move the paper and up and down against that surface.  You'll find that you have to move your fingers up to move the sheet up so that you can read futher down the sheet.  This is Natural and this is the thinking behind the iOS and the new "Natural Scrolling" that Apple has enabled.
It drove me nuts but once I realized what Apple was doing, it quite frankly does make more sense.  It took me about a month and now I wont' go back. I use the regularl scrolling at work on PC's and now I can transition without even thinking about it.
Basically think about it like you are moving the paper that the text is on and NOT the text itself (Or Web page). Then this type of scrolling will seem natural to you.
Conversly with traiditional scrolling you are moving the text up and now and not the paper behind it.

  • Contacts view...why did they change?

I have used a 7520 then an 8700 now I have an 8300 and I am sad to say the contacts view looks more like pocket pc then the traditional easy to see blackberry view where you could see many contacts easy. The old way when you were searching for a contact search results would show one line per contact...is there a way to get back to the old view where you would see one line per contact when keyword searching in contacts?

We're all users here.  We have no way of knowing why Apple does what it does unless they make an announcement.
