Why do 30fps videos import as 0fps

I'm having trouble with some videos in iMovie'11... Most movies (in mp4 format) import perfectly, other mp4 videos import but then don't play - a "0" is displayed in the lower left corner of the thumbnail and says that the current clip frame rate (0fps) isn't a multiple of the current project (30fps). The odd thing is that I can view these videos in Quicktime and they play perfectly there, and the file specs of these mp4s say that they are 29.97fps (which is what iMovie says is 30fps), so why does iMovie say they are 0fps?
What is going on iMovie imports 30fps videos as 0fps?
Pretty much all the videos that are doing this are HD videos as well, does that make a difference?
Is there anything I can do to get these videos to import correctly, or can I change the fps once they're imported?

Are the videos able to be played in iPhoto?

1.Download the Flash setup file from here:
[http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Adobe Flash - Plugin version].
Save it to your Desktop.
2. Close Firefox using File > Exit
then check the Task Manager > Processes tab to make sure '''firefox.exe''' is closed,
{XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC = Processes tab}
3. Then run the Flash setup file from your Desktop.
* On Vista and Windows 7 you may need to run the plugin installer as Administrator by starting the installer via the right-click context menu if you do not get an UAC prompt to ask for permission to continue (i.e nothing seems to happen).
• Why does iPhoto now import videos?

I'm shooting a video and production stills with my DSLR. Why does iPhoto '11 import the videos? They just take up disk space. I can't do anything with them in iPhoto. Can I tell iPhoto to import the stills only?

iPhoto has always had the ability to import certain formats of video. Also, iPhoto video can be seen in iMovie for editting. - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2196.

• Why can't I import video files from an external hard drive?

I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 12 on Mac OSX 10.7.5 trying to import video files from a Lacie Rugged External Hard Drive using both firewire and usb, neither with any luck. The error message I receive is:
"You're trying to import a file from a DVD or a Removable Media. Please use Video Importer for importing Videos and Image Importer for importing images. "
We can't import through the video importer either because the hard drive doesn't show up. We can, however, drag the videos to the desktop and do it that way but we'd like to avoid doing that if possible.
Thanks
By the way, the external hard drive is formatted FAT32 if that matters

• Why would Lightroom video capabilities/iTunes import/Netflix streaming/Photoshop all stop working at once?

Hi forum --
Several programs all stopped working at the same time and will only work (briefly) right after I've restarted my computer including:
- iTunes audio cd importing
- Lightroom video importing and playback
Netflix streaming (on both Safari and Chrome) won't work and Photoshop (CS4) won't open at all.
Videos work without a problem in: Quicktime, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and Bridge CS4 and CS6. YouTube also works without a problem.
Maybe the problems are conincidence, but this seems like it is posisbly a software problem with my computer, not my programs.
I have tried reinstalling Ligthroom and resetting the preferences files but they don't help.
The only things that I can think of that happened is that I:
1. downloaded my own videos from my own YouTube acocunt after my external hard drive failed and maybe there was a virus?
2. I deleted some programs with "Clean My Mac 2" and maybe it deleted some crucial file someplace?
I am running a 2009 13" MacBook Pro with a 2.53 Ghz processor and 4 GB RAM and Mountain Lion (everything is up to date).
Thank you for any suggestions!

I had problems with streaming until I changed the WiFi channel that I was using. The original one conflicted with my neighbor. After that, MOST of my streaming problems vanished. Occasionally, a movie would pause for more buffering and I eventually ran an ethernet cable from the Apple TV to my Apple Extreme (to eliminate the Wifi). I have not had a single problem since then (except to repair the drywall after running the ethernet from one floor to another). :-)

• Why can't I point the Video Importer to a specific USB drive directory

When I (am force) to use the Video Importer (because my clips are on a USB drive) it seems to find and select all videos on this USB drive. This is not what I want. I want to browse to the directory (on the USB drive) that I created. It contains the 6 video clips I want to import, not all 300 on the drive.
How to I select a specific directory on the USB drive using Video Importer
I'm using Premiere 12.

• Why video importer source not detected Premiere Elements 13

Trying to import videos from file but getting a "No supported device has been detected." error. Have not been able to import media since software has been installed. Here's the screen.

Thanks for the reply. I suspect that we are mis-communicating on some of critical areas. So let us go over the details.
You say
Trying to add media from file in an external drive.
Is this an external drive attached to the computer using a USB connection?
What is the media that is on that external drive - where is it coming from - brand/model/settings of the camera that recorded the video?
If you had video on a disc and inserted that disc into a burner tray, one would expect to see the message that you got in
your latest screenshot (see post 5).
But, if you had a file stored on an external hard drive, you would use Add Media Files and Folders as I described before.
By any chance do you have a memory card with video that you are inserting into a memory card slot of your computer.
In that case, you would use the Video Importer route. You should be seeing that slot as a drive.
Earlier you wrote
Have not been able to import media since software has been installed.
Do you have any photos stored in My Pictures on your computer hard drive? In Premiere Elements Expert workspace, select Add Media/Files
and Folder and navigate to those photos to bring them into the project. Do they import? Do you have any videos in My Videos on your computer
hard drive? If so, please try to import them into a project with Add Media/Files and Folders. Do they import?
Once we confirm the nature of this external drive, I think that we will begin to get to the solution.
Thanks for the follow ups.

• HT202020 Why are certain videos that I have taken with my iPhone 4 not supported by Aperture.

Why are certain videos that I have taken with my iPhone not supported by Aperture? That's weird. I expect that since both iPhone and Aperture are Apple products, file support should be seamless between the two.
Also, iPhone 4 does not appear as Camera Model in the metadata of the unsupported video file in Aperture . But other videos I have taken with the same iPhone 4 appear in Aperture and the Camera Model appears correctly. Why is that?

Have you done some cleaning and cleared caches on your Mac? Maybe the com.apple.xpchelper.cache file is missing. Check the folder /System/Library/Caches/
Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion https://discussions.apple.com/message/19304702#19304702
If this file should be missing, you need to restore it from a backup or reinstall it by reinstalling your system.

• Why does some video need to be rendered in FCE 4 before I can work on it?

I've been trying to get a handle on FCE 4 because it's very different than iMovie '08. I have a bunch of content in iMovie that I'd like to mess with in FCE 4, so I exported from iMovie as FCE XML and imported in FCE. There is some video that I re-encoded to Quicktime from ASF and it seems to need to be rendered before it will show up in the Canvas in FCE 4. FCE shows this content as DV/DVCPRO - NTSC under "Compressor" in the browser. Other stuff that was taken off my Sony HDR-SR7 is available in FCE 4 without any problems. This shows up as Apple Intermediate Coded in the browser.
What's the deal with rendering anyway? Why does FCE need to "render" video to add things like effects when iMovie can add effects, etc at will with no "rendering" required?

FCE can do certain effects on the fly without rendering. Some more elaborate transitions, like 3D wipes, require too much processor time to do them in real time. My understanding is that Macs with greater on-board processing power do more of these effects in real time, while slower machines must render.
iMovie can do these effects on the fly because it's working with far less information. Think of iMovie works in the DV format while FCE works in the DV/DVCPRO-NTSC format. It's too subtle a name difference but the reality is quite different. It's like editing still pictures in compressed, lossy JPEG format vs. uncompressed TIFF format. Think about how long it takes your computer to open a photo of say, 8x10" 300 dpi in TIFF vs. that same file in JPEG. Well, that's what FCE has to do. It's working in the video equivalent of TIFF -- 30 frames per second. So there's a greater demand on your processor by a factor of 10. You can see this in action in Quicktime. Save a raw video import 720x480 in .dv and then in DV/DVCPRO-NTSC format and then play it back. The .dv will probably play smoothly while the DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (.mov) will hang up on play-back. It's just too much for your process to display all of those full resolution images so rapidly. And if you look at the two images side-by-side (particularly titles) you'll see how sharp and clear the .mov file is compared to the compressed .dv file.
Hope this helps.

I'm having trouble with video imported from my camera memory card. The video breaks up and pixelizes when it's directly imported from the memory card. That makes the video useless. Why does this happen? It doesn't do that in any other video editing software. Thanks for the help.

Was the card formatted in the camera doing the shooting?

• Why are my videos not playing the right way up

Why are my videos not playing the right way up

I took four video clips while on a trip this week. Two are oriented the right way (playing wide on the device and imported correctly). The other two are Tall and not oriented right. Orientation is 90 degrees to the right. I don't know why this is happening on occasions. Even some pictures I took did the same **** thing. It's weird. And I can't figure it out. The camera is held the way I want the pictures and videos to be recorded and played but something internal is turning these videos and pictures 90 degrees clockwise.

Lots of ways to go on this. But, I think starting with a definition of the source media and how you are setting up the project is going to be the path to success. So, we need to zero in on questions/answers related to what I wrote earlier
The properties of the source media need expanding up beyond "file types are AVI, AVCHD, and MOV.
a. What are the video and audio compression of the files with the .avi file extension and what is the frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio?
b. What is the file extension for the file with the AVCHD video compression. Again, what is the frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio?
c. What are the video and audio compression of the files with the .mov file extension and what is the frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio?
You asked how to go about that. The best way is to run each of the file types through a video properties read out program such as MediaInfo
http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
Latest versions of that MediaInfo have been problematic in that you need to be on guard for any unwanted toolbars and installed "extra" programs (bloatware).
OR
We would not necessarily get more information, but we would get enough to put us in a good position, if we run the types through gspot utility (good for codec and basic information)...less bloatware concerns
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
The dialog that you would get from gspot would look like
Once we know the video and audio codecs, frame size, frames rates, interlaced or progressive frame rates, etc. that we are dealing with, we on a good course to set up the project settings to match those properties, independant of whatever export choices we have in mind. That we will address later after a successful import and edit.
OR
A third choice for getting at this information is less productive but can be a good last resort...knowing the brand/model/recording settings of the camera from which these files came.
Please review and then let us know if you can gather the file properties information details requested.
We will be watching for your results.
Thank you.
