Why do my applications hang (Mail, Disk Utility, Installer, Safari)
After the latest software update. Mail, Safari, Disk Utility, Installer, Activity monitor and some more applications do nothing more than jumping in the Dock and then hang-up with the spinning wheel always spinning... I think it was after the 2006-003 security update, or maybe the ITunes update....I'just don't know anymore...
I have tried to downgrade to the 10.3.7 combo update but the installer App behaves just the same... If it wasn't for Fire fox I wouln't be writing here.
During my search on these forums I have found a thread that stated that the latest ITunes update was responsible, I downgraded it to 6.0.1, and it worked until I restarted my mac... Then it didn't work anymore, all my Apple apps are not opening.
I really need some help with this...
The wierd thing is that all other (non-Apple) programs run just fine, like the whole Adobe CS and Macromedia Packages.
If anyone has a solution, please be so kind to let me know.
Thanks all
Try this and see if it works for you.

kmosx: Apps unexpectedly quit
Posted: Dec 19, 2004 8:11 AM
Here are some possible reasons for this problem.
1. Recent Update: Download and reapply the most recent Combo Update: Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo
2. Font duplicates: Please read the articles by Kurt Lang and J.Otava here: Kurt Lang: Font Management in OS X Panther and J.Otava: Fonts & Apple Type Services
3. Corrupted preferences:
Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
- com.apple.ATS.plist
- com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
4. Permissions:
Symptoms:
a. Only Apple applications affected
b. Also happens when you switch to a new user.
c. First appeared after update to 10.3.4, 10.3.5 or 10.3.6
This usually happens if you do not repair permissions before you update to 10.3.4 or later. There are (unconfirmed) hints that corrupted cache files might also contribute to this problem. You can clean caches with programs like Cocktail or Panther Cache Cleaner. The only solution I am aware of is to do an Archive&Install.
You also might want to read this article: Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!
If none of the above solves the problem you might have to do an Archive&Install:
1. Insert the Install CD 1 and reboot while holding down the c-key
2. Once you are booted go to the menu and select disk utility
3. Repair the disk and Repair permissions!
4. Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation
5. Under "options" select "Archive&Install" and check the box "keep user and network data".
6. Install Panther
7. Restart
8. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run disk utility to repair permissions again.
9. Download (or open if you downloaded before) Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo and install it.
10. Restart and repair permisssions
11. Go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update"
12. Install all missing updates and restart.
13. Repair permissions

I updated my G4 from about 10.4.2 to 10.4.11. After that, Safari and Mail crash almost instantly and Disk Utility will not open. I tried installing Disk Utility from my G5 but still the same result. Any ideas? And many thanks.
Specs: 450mhz, 1.25GB SDRAM, 1MB L2 Cachehi. i wasn't able to set up a new account, system preferences wouldn't respond and i forced quit. so i'm running disk utility now from the tiger installer disk, then i'll give it a try.
also, here are the crash reports from Mail and Safari. thanks so much.

Confused - Mail - Disk Utility - HELP
Mail is slow to respond or will not respond at all leading to a forever spinning ball. Attempted to find an answer in mail thread. Was lead to Disk Utility. I do not understand this at all. Used Verify Disk, it states Invalid node structure The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Repair disk is greyed out. I started up from disk. Repair disk is still grey. Other person who was trying to help become obviously frustrated with me and said they give up and to get help elsewhere. Please help.
Hi Cherryblossom,
Let's take this one problem at a time and the most important after reading your post is your internal disk. When you say you, "started up from disk", do you mean you started up from your Tiger restore disk? You're running 10.4.9, on a PBookG4 so you must have the Tiger disk. Running Disk Utility from the Applications/Utility folder on the drive can't repair the hard drive. Only booting from the system restore disk (Tiger in this case) can do the job.
If Disk Utility can repair the hard drive here is how to do that.
Make sure your PBook is shut down. Now, while holding down the C key, press the power button and insert the system disk all at the same time. You can let go of the C key when you see the Apple logo on the screen. Now, an Installer window will open by default. Quit the Installer from the Menu and instead click Utilities in the Menu, then click Disk Utility. When Disk Utility opens, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. Then click the Verify button. DU will scan the drive, report errors if any. Then the Repair button should be available at this point. If DU reports errors, click the Repair button. Disk Utility will advise one way or the other if it can repair the disk. If it can't, your options are this. You can purchase a great disk repair such as DiskWarrior from www.alsoft.com, OR, locate an Apple store or Apple reseller in your area.
As for Mail. Try this: Locate this file: com.apple.mail.plist
it's located here: MacintoshHD/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Now, try to launch and use Mail and see if it cooperates. You will have to reset your Mail/Preferences but if this works, it's minor in comparison to dealing with the spinning ball.
I sure hope something helps and you can always Reply for more help.

Why are there multiple drives in Disk Utility?
When using Disk Utility, why is each disk listed twice and what is the difference between the two? If I'm erasing a CD which one is better to use?
The top entry is the drive. Any partitions (volumes) are listed, indented, below it. To erase a CD-RW, select the drive.

Why is the Restore function in disk utility so slow?
I am using the Restore functionality in Disk Utility to copy my old 250GB Time Machine disk (which is now full) to a new 1.1TB disk.
250GB is calculating to take 11 hours to copy. Both disks are connected via FireWire (old one is FireWire 400, new one is FireWire 800).
If my math is correct, that's only 6.4MB per second.
Why is it so monumentally slow? That's pretty much normal for a FW400 drive. Restore takes more time that some copy programs because of the file verification it performs.

Why does .dmg creation fail in Disk Utility app ?
Want to duplicate a DVD with a VIDEO_TS folder containing various video files. Inserted the DVD, started Disk Utility, selected the mounted DVD in the Disk Utility left window, and chose File>New>Disk Image from (the mounted DVD name). In the Convert Image panel, I chose a name, selected "read-only" and hit Save. The Disk Utility Progress panel states a .dmg is being created and shows a progress bar. Then it displays the following message: "Unable to create 'disk2.dmg' - No such file or directory" I'm pretty sure the DVD I wish to copy was burned on a Windows PC.
Thoughts?

for such an easy task as duplicating I use SimplyBurns http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19778/simplyburns
It's much easier to use than Disc Utility and/or making a DMG

Why do some applications hang up system
After using some applications for awhile, they start hanging up system. It's most noticable in Adobe Photoshop Elements (10), It also happens in iPhoto. I get the little spinning circle. Many times I can't do a a force quit on the application or anything except manually shut down my computer. When I reboot, everything is running smoothly again - for awhile.
I usually keep my computer on all the time and reboot once a week. Could the drag be because there is too much stuff hogging the system? I seem to have plently of free space. I know in Microsoft I use to do a defragment on a regular basis. I realize Apple doesn't have that, but is there something else I ned to do? Thank you.Try http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html
In actual fact OS X does defragment on the fly so that it is not necessary for you to do it.

Why is Disk Utility so fast?
Hello,
I formatted a 250 GIG drive (with the write zeros option) and it only took about 2 hours. Wow. Thats fast. In the past I used OS 9's "Drive Setup" utility and it used to take much longer. For example, the last time I formatted a drive with OS 9's Drive Setup utility it took about 18 hours (with the "zero all data" option on an 80 GIG drive) . Why is it that Tiger's Disk Utility can write zeros so quickly?
Is it doing the same job? Is it as thorough as OS9?
Is it maybe because my computer I am using is a few MHz faster? Or is Tiger's Disk Utility just simply faster?
I would like to hear that the days of waiting 20 hours or more for a "zero all data" erase are gone now that we have Tiger. That would be nice. However I am not sure if Tiger is doing as thorough of a format as OS 9 did. Maybe Tiger is cutting some corners somewhere. Should I maybe first format the drive in OS9 and then format it a second time in Tiger for the best format or would that be unnecessary?
Maybe I should ask, why was OS9's Drive setup so slow when formatting drives? Was it doing something that Tiger is not doing?
PS. In both OS9 and OSX, I chose the "zero all data" option (which I suppose is called "write zeros" in Tiger). In Tiger I chose write zeros once (not 7 times and not the 35 times option).
Thank you.Thanks Cornelius and Gulliver,
Gulliver, yes, this is a new hard drive I installed into my blue and white G3 350 MHz using the 1S2 Firmtek Seritek SATA controller card (I installed this card into the faster video slot sacrificing 10-15 % video performance for the sake of faster hard drive performance - a much better use of PCI power that many, if not most, users would agree). Maybe this is why my hard drive is so fast. I then moved my video card to the next slot over. Its not as fast with the video but the video speed loss is virtually unnoticable for my desktop publishing work. For video games I might notice it a little but I don't play much video games on this machine.
The new hard drive is an Hitachi T7K250 SATA hard drive. Thanks Gulliver for your comments. By the way, my G3 did not come with OS 9.2.2. It came with 8.5 (bought in 1999) and since then I have upgraded to 8.6, 9.2.1, 9.2.2, 10.1, 10.1.5 and 10.4 and 10.4.6 (the latest). Lots of upgrades! - all very worthwhile.
I still always choose to include the OS9 drivers when I erase and prepare a hard drive for a Mac OS - even thought I am not sure if will not use the OS 9 drivers - I do this anyways because I read that adding the OS9 drivers does not take up any significant room on the hard drive - and you never know when you just might need to install OS9 for some reason one day.
And yes, I have upgraded the firmware - a necesssary step in order to install any version of OSX on a G3 B&W.
One other point. I didn't even install OS9. I only have OS 10.4.6 Tiger on this blue and white G3. It is not necessary to install OS 9 - it is only optional.
Because I don't have a licence on this computer for OS9, I will instead be installing OS8.6 onto a separate hard drive on this computer (not the hard drive that I have Tiger on) - a challenge that lead to many posts about a month ago on Apple Discussions. - mostly to do with how to boot back into Tiger after working in 8.6. (OS9.2.2 works well with OSX - OS 8.6 is a little trickier.) If anyone is curious about this you might need to check out my other posts about this from a month ago. Basically, you might need to use startup disk manager that was originally intended for OS9 that some say does work in 8.6 - or drag the OS8.6 finder out of the OS8.6 system folder after using 8.6 hoping the computer will look next to the OS 10.4 startup. Or - if all else fails, to boot up from the OS 10.4 CD with the "C" key pressed at startup - and then change the startup disk to OS10.4 and reboot into OS10.4. not sure which solution will work best - I will soon find out. -
Drive visible in Disk Utility but not Finder. Why?
I have a PowerMac G4 (mirrored drive doors) with 4 hard drives installed. 3 of the drives are set-up in a striped RAID array and the other one is my boot drive with two partitions. One one partition, I have OS X 10.3 and I can see the RAID drive fine. On the other partition, I fresh installed 10.4 but the drive does not appear on the desktop. Strangly, I can see the drive in Disk Utility and it shows me the mount point. I can even unmount and remount it but it still does not show up in the Finder. I had 10.4 server installed prior to the fresh 10.4 (not server) install and that showed it fine. I tried to see the drive in Terminal but also does not appear. Why does my drive appear in Disk Utility but not the Finder?
BDAqua wrote:
Yes, it needs the path to the drive...
:-/ Yes, I got the command in completely with the path to the drive like it states in the other post. I have no idea why it didn't recognize the command as I'm not as familiar with UNIX/Linux commands as I'd like to be.
Anyways... I found the cause of the problem (incase it happens to anyone else). Here's what happened:
The ownership on the root of my RAID volume was set to be read/write for me (under my proper username) and no access for anyone else including Admin. When I installed a fresh OS, the default user was Admin (who had no access under the previous OS). If I would've taken the time to set-up my proper account (with the same owner name as my previous OS) then it would've been visible again but since I didn't see it under the default Admin account, I stopped there to troubleshoot. Another way to make it visible was just to change the access privileges from my previous OS to be read/write for other users (or at least Admin). I would think that checking the box for "Ignore ownership on this volume" would've remedied that but for whatever reason, it didn't.
Thank you for all your help. I did learn a little even if it wasn't the direct solution. Now if only I could get Disk Utility to restore my old image without giving me crazy errors... But that's another issue altogether. ;-D -
I'm having a problem launching Applications - any application. When I click on the application icon in my dock, it bounces and bounces but never gets the little white dot that signifies that the application is open. After a while it will stop bouncing. But, then it appears that the system thinks that the application IS open, and I have to Force Quit the application to try to open it again. Applications that open on start-up are fine.
I am running the console and am getting the following reports no matter what application I launch (these particular examples came when I tried to launch the Disk Utility:

I have Verified and Repaired permissions several times. There are three permission repairs that seem to return over and over. It says that it is repairing them, but they still show up on the next scan.
I am dumbfounded. Please help.Ugh! I'm so frustrated!
The problem isn't consistent so it's hard for me to explain what's happening. When I tried to isolate a problem in the prefs, I moved all the prefs to a folder on my desktop, then started moving them over a little at a time and trying to launch apps as I did that. I had only moved over a few prefs when I started having the problem again. So, I moved those prefs back to the desktop, but I still couldn't launch. I kept trying to isolate a problem there, and I couldn't make sense of it - it was all inconsistent. Eventually, I decided to Restore the Prefs from the back up that I did yesterday before all my problems started. That seemed like it might be helping because I was able to get a few apps to launch. But, I was still having trouble with other apps. Sometimes one app wouldn't launch, so I would force quit and try again, and then it would. Sometime an app would launch fine. I would quit and try to relaunch and then it would hang up. Other apps just wouldn't launch at all. I restarted the machine again, and could only get Disk Utility and Safari to launch before I started having problems again. I'm just at a loss. I feel like I'm going to have to restore the whole computer, and I've never done that before. It scares me. What else can I try?
Just an FYI, this is what I get when I repair permission in Disk Utility:

It's exactly the same every single time I have run Repair Permissions. I don't know if it means anything, but I think it's weird that I get those exact same permissions with problems every time, and it says that it repairs them every time, but they are still there the next time. -

Disk Utility Burning CDs and DVDs Windows Compatibility
I don't burn many CDs or DVDs. However, a friend of mine recently switched to Apple, and he burns quite a few movies and CDs. He asked me how to copy DVDs, burn Audio CDs, and save files to CDs and DVDs. The only thing I knew how to do was to burn files to CDs. I know that CDs that are burned in the Finder will work on Mac OS and Windows. My question is about Disk Utility. I've read that Disk Utility does not create Windows compatible disks, however Apple's instructions for making a copy of a movie DVD are to use Disk Utility and create a CD/DVD master image to burn to a DVD. Disk Utility uses the .cdr format, which supposedly does not work with Windows. So, if I wanted to copy a Windows application CD, could disk utility make an exact copy of it or not? It seems to me that it should since I am making an exact copy using CD/DVD master, but will it do it or not? Also, if I made a copy of a Movie DVD using CD/DVD master (.cdr) will it only play on Macs or will it play on Windows also? When it comes to Audio CDs, I realize one must use iTunes to make Audio CDs. I have searched all over the internet for answers to these questions and most people say use Roxio Toast or they just don't answer these questions very clearly.
If you have two optical drives connected to your computer, you can just clone the disc. However, I'd recommend Roxio Toast, as others have, because it'll handle all the compatibility issues for you. Dealing with Finder and Disk Utility guarantees compatibility with macs, but not necessarily Windows, or even standard DVD/CD players depending on how you burn it.
If you have audio files, use iTunes to burn an audio CD. If you have movie files, use iDVD or Toast to burn a standard DVD (not a data disc). -
Can't locate disk (using Disk Utility) when reinstalling OSX v10.2
Having problems after wiping drive and reinstalling - Disk Utility & Installation do not show a drive for the machine. Viewing other posts suggest clicking on Erase tab and selecting MAC OS Extended - but the drop-down box is greyed out with MAC OS Standard displayed. Tried to use Disk Warrior but nothing displayed when I booted up from the CD. Is this an indicator that my drive needs replacing? Machine is old - G4 /450, and can't remember if I used the old software or Tiger with the previous installation.
Thanks for any suggestions!do you have your original mac install disks? try to use the apple hardware test program...it will check the main hardware and if there are hardware failures with your HD, or other components it'll give you heads up.
also post this question in the powermac G4 forum, might get more bites since this is the G4 MDD forum. -

applications on my Macbook Pro 10.8.5 (8 GB) hang frequently. Disk Utility keeps repairing iTunes, system libraries and applications, but the next time I start my notebook, again applications hang. What do I do? Itunes, Preview window, Microsoft Office 11 are the programs with most frequent hangs.
