Why do USB drives plugged into USB hubs make my Mac Book Pro (Retina late 2013) wake from sleep?

I have 2 x USB hubs, a Logitech USB 2.0 hub and a Broway USB 3.0 hub. Tested both and both seem to be the cause of my late 2013 Mac Book Pro waking from sleep. I ran syslog to find out why (syslog |grep -i "Wake reason") and the reason I got back was "kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: XHC1" - this means nothing to me, but it didn't take too much mucking about to hunt the problem down and figure out it was the USB hub with any USB drive attached. If the drive is attached directly to the computer. No problem, computer sleeps fine.
This was a problem I encountered (and never solved) with OSX 10.6.8, a 2008 Macbook Pro the same Logitech USB 2.0 hub, but with different drives. I put the problem down to a bug that never got solved in an old system. But I am simply AMAZED after my update to a new MBP and new system that it is still about almost 6 years, a dozen MBP's and 4 systems later.
The other problem is that not only does the USB drive/ USB hub combo wake the computer it also loses the drive upon sleep and mounts it again upon wake. Then repeats this process every couple of minutes. And it obviously doesn't eject the drives properly because each time I return to the computer after I put it to sleep or let it go to sleep I get a giant list of "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notifications about it. Which I'm guessing could eventually cause some file damage.
I've tried combinations of different drives, different hubs (a Belkin and a no-name Chinese brand 2.0 hub) and the problem persists. Is there a solve to this problem? I'm surprised to see so little posts on forums about this. Am I just unlucky and got another combination of faulty/problematic hardware, or is this a real problem that exists for everyone? If not I would love to know if people have found winning combos of USB hubs and drives. But if it is, then it HAS to be solved.
If you have a Macbook Pro, then you are limited to 2 USB outlets, this is obviously a bare minimum and I would say that 95% of people using their laptop computer in the office or at home have a hub, and very likely a USB drive attached to it. I know actual Apple reps don't really pay much attention to the community support posts, but I've got 6 months worth of Applecare left and would like suggestions about how to get Apple's attention about this problem.
BTW Jettison (a 3rd party app that ejects drives properly before sleep) is not a solve. It is a 3rd party app that tries to fill a hole in a broken system. I don't want to eject my drive upon sleep, I want it to got the **** to sleep.

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?

  • My camera Nikon D800 don't work with Mac Book Pro retina... Why ?

Somebody Know why my digital reflex Nikon d800 don't work with Mac Book Pro retina ?

I shoot tethered which requires that the D800 be recognized by the laptop.
However, I just figured it out. Nikon changed their USB protocol so that the D800 doesn't show up as a mass storage device.  That said, the d800 IS recognized by image capture and be computer in general, just not like previous Nikon dSLRs.  If you're tethering via Lightroom make sure the Nikon tethering plugin is enabled (which it may not be if you previously shot tethered with Canon).

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

  • Usb not recognized when windows7 installed on mac book pro retina

    Hi,
I am trying to install windows 7 to mac book pro - retina display with mavericks.
I managed to come to the point where windows installed and starts and I need to install the boot camp on the windows. I am having problems at this stage. Windows does not recognize the usb drives and i cant install the boot camp or connect to the internet, nothing. I restarted the machine several times but still no luck.
When i open it in mac, i can access the usb drive. When switched back to windows there is no usb.
    Can someone please advise?

The USB thumb drive itself is either USB 2 or 3. It's a hardware thing.  Not sure how to tell what type it is through a computer, but some usually the packaging indicates which it is.  Sometimes the drive itself will have it written on it somewhere. You will need to delete the bootcamp partition in OSX using the bootcamp assistant and redo the entire process using a USB 2 thumb drive. After that the process worked as indicated in the boot camp instructions. The bootcamp drivers were automatically installed after windows rebooted itself.
I am not 100% sure that this was the issue, but when I went from using a thumb that I knew was usb 3 to one that I was sure was not, it all of a sudden worked.  It could have also been that it just did not like the usb 3 drive I tried to use the first few times as it was a generic drive from Microcenter.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 Compatibility issue with Bose Companion 5 USB Speakers on Mavericks

Hi, I wonder if somebody has compatibility issues of new MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) and Bose Companion 5 USB speakers? They work fine on a left USB port on my MacBook Pro, but doesn't work at all on a right one: USB speakers are not recognised or if recognised as "Uknown Audio Device", they doesn't work any way and iTunes stops playing till I take USB cable out.
I tested them already on two identical machines - the same issue: left USB port works fine, right one - not.
While comparing, I tested this audio device also with other MacBooks:
MacBook Pro 15" 2008 (Mavericks) - both USB ports work fine
MacBook 13" 2010 (Mountain Lion) - both USB ports work fine
MacBook Pro 13" Retina early 2013 (Mavericks) - both USB ports work fine
So it is somehow related exactly to the MacBook Pro Retina 15" Retina late 2013 with Maverics. I guess some sound card and USB port communication issue. Does any body exeriences such problems as well?

    Hi,
Im having USB problems with storage devices and android phone connections
    Thanks

  • Mac Book Pro Retina with Mt Lion.  Where is the Hard Drive?

Mac Book Pro Retina with Mt Lion.  Where is the Hard Drive?

Technically there is no "hard drive" in the Retina MacBook Pro, as all models come with "flash" storage which isnt a "hard disk drive." So if you are wondering why you are not hearing classic hard drive chatter and spin-up sounds then this is the reason.
Other than that, logically the devices are treated the same, so as Kappy mentions you just have to enable it on your desktop or go to your computer name in the Finder sidebar under "Devices" or otherwise go to the top level of the system's folder structure to reveal any mounted volumes, including the internal drive.

  • Can I use the IRig to plug in my guitar on my mac book Pro or it just works in ipad, ipod and iphone?

Can I use the IRig to plug in my guitar on my mac book Pro or it just works in ipad, ipod and iphone?

    From their website:
Got a Mac? Get an iRig!
Now for the hidden features… if you have a newer Mac computer, you can use the iRig as an audio interface for it. The newer Mac models feature a headphone jack that act as a headphone/microphone input for headsets. This means that you can also use your iRig with your Mac laptop or desktop machine to take advantage of the higher processing power of your machine and you don't need an additional audio interface to use it. Simply plug the iRig into your headphone jack, plug your headphones/line out into your iRig and you've got a fully functioning audio interface for guitar/bass/keyboards, or any other instrument with a ¼" out. Pretty cool.

  • I am trying to install a program on my Mac Book Pro Retina from a Apple SuperDrive. Every time I run the installer, it says I do not have enough memory to install. However, I definitely have enough memory (186.74 GB). Any ideas why?

I am trying to install a program on my Mac Book Pro Retina from a Apple SuperDrive. Every time I run the installer, it says I do not have enough memory to install. However, I definitely have enough memory (186.74 GB). The program takes only 550 MB. Any ideas why?

Thanks for the clarification on the terms. I consider myself proficent at my computer, but not exactly in its inner-workings! I have 8 GB of memory installed.
I am still confused as to why I do not have any space for the program. This is the exact error message I get: "There is not enough free space on Macintosh HD disk. The Print Shop 2 application requires about 550 MB to be installed. Free some disk space and try again."
Thank you again for your help.

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Using an external hard drive to connect the camera to the Mac Book Pro

I am about three weeks away from a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. In the meantime, I am logging and capturing from my Canon AX HI through my external hard drive. I am not super amazed at the quality of the image, it's noisy.
I am using HDV tapes, and I don't beleive the lighting should be causing the issue.
Does anyone know if using the external hard drive to connect the camera to my Mac Book Pro is compromising the quality of the image? Can I expect a beautiful strong image on a lap top?
    Thanks for any help.

There is ZERO quality loss when you capture via firewire. It is a digital transfer of files...that's it. The issue you have is that you are trying to judge the quality of your image based on what you see with your computer monitors, and that is simply the LAST thing you should be doing.
And since this is HDV, the only way to monitor that is with an HD card or I/O device, and an HD monitor or TV. Like the Matrox MXO2 mini or AJA I/O Express mini and HDTV.

  • HT201364 why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro already comes with OS X Mavericks. However, if you try to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you will get a message telling you that your MacBook Pro is not compatible, when it is.
This is caused because the Late 2013 MacBook Pro is running a special OS X Mavericks version which is different than the version available in the Mac App Store. This makes that you get an error message when you try to download OS X Mavericks even when you are using it.
Instead of downloading OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you can still download OS X Mavericks to reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 You will be able to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store when your MacBook Pro uses the same version as all other Macs

  • I can't upgrade my mac book pro retina 13inch to 10.8.2, why?

I can't upgrade my mac book pro retina 13inch to 10.8.2, why?

Is it strange that we have to learn about the 10.8.2 release being pulled on a support forum?  I've spent the last few minutes trying to locate the update (as instructed on my new MacBook with Retina display for the iPhoto update and to enable mail in iCloud). I gave up and went to Google and found this thread. Thanks for the info by the way, at least I know to stop looking for the update.

When my MacBook pro late 2011 wakes from sleep i have it set to make me enter my password, but when that pace comes up the resolution of it is smaller than my screen. Why is this happening?

I was at the Apple Service. The problem was the 750Gb Toshiba HDD. It's incredible what noise can make that little thing
I didn't know the hdd position is on left on MBP 17" ,  I thought is the same position like MBP15"
I did't lose any kind of data.. it was fix on time.
    Anyway, thank u guys....and don't forget that noise !!!
P.S. I'll make a song with that noise sample to remember it
